Fourth meeting of the ECPGR Working Group on Malus/Pyrus Biljana Lazovic University of Montenegro Biotechnical Faculty Podgorica Weggis, Switzerland
Montenegro: Area km2, Total population Only 10% of the territory is up to 200m altitude. 35% to 1,000 m, 55% - of surface is 1,000 m above sea level. 2 2
Montenegro is characterized by diversified Agriculture: from olive, fig and citrus growing in the coastal region, 3
..vineyards in the central part to extensive sheep breeding in the northern area. 4
Individual research work in the period after II- nd World war. Organized work through the project on Bank of plant genetic resources of Yugoslavia in The collected fruit accessions were maintained by the Institute of Agriculture (present Biotechnical Faculty) in the collection site in Bijelo Polje. Repatriation of the land of the collections to the previous owners caused the loss of the plant material by the end of 90ties. 5
SEEDNet project New round of organized activities on PGRs started in 2004 with realization of SEEDNet project, finaned by Swedish SIDA. The aim of the project was to intensify national and to improve regional cooperation on inventarization, collection and utilization of GR in agriculture. Focal point for Montenegro was Ministry of Agriculture which apointed Biotechnical Faculty in Podgorica for realization. Activities on the project were performed through the seven WGs, one of which was Fruit and vitis. 6
The main focus in Montenegro was on the inventory and conservation of the following species: Apple (Malus), Plum (Prunus), Fig (Ficus), Pomegranate (Punica), Olive (Olea) and Vitis. On Malus two SEEDNet Regional Projects were realized: 1. Survey of autochthonous apple populations in the area of South-East Europe ( ) 2. Characterization of apple local varieties (Malus domestica Borkh.) from South East European region ( ). 7
The work was done through numerous expeditions inventorying the apple accessions. krstovaca tvrdljaja litrenjaca 8
Survey and characterization of apple Seventy of apple accessions were recognized and marked in situ on the territory of Montenegro. For all accessions passport data were obtained, pomological description was done, and flowering and ripening time was observed. 9
petrovaca prutaca kolacara djulabija ferik 10
DOCUMENTATION Passport data, morphological and pomological properties of apple accessions are kept in the excel form 11
DOCUMENTATION Some of the apple accessions were sent to the SEEDNet database as well as to EURISCO database 12
13
Activities and future tasks Propagated material of 47 apple accessions to be planted in the collection site of the Faculty in Podgorica unfortunately was lost in As a backup, enthusiastic colleagues had planted 60 accessions of apple (mainly one tree per variety) on their own land in Bijelo Polje site. Further step is to make the initial DNA analyses (SSR) in order eliminate the duplicates and to save the unique accession. Capacities for DNA isolation exist at Biotechnical Faculty, but cooperation with experienced DNA lab is important for advanced analyses. Montenegrin variety krstovaca is used in breeding programs in the region, due to the resistance to fire blight and apple scab. 14
Pear (Pyrus) In the collection of repatriated land, there were some of Pear local varieties: Jarac, Medunak, Ramanganlija, Pecanka and Begar However, no activities on Pear inventory due to the lack of human resources! 15
Montenegro ratified the UN Convetion on biodiversity Strategy of agriculture ( ), Montenegrin agriculture and EU Strategy of food production and rural development, was accepted by the Government of MNE Government of Montenegro accepted in 2007 National program on preservation of PGR in agriculture ( ) Action plan on preservation of PGR in agriculture ( ) was accepted Montengro became a member of FAO, 2009 Montenegro is a partner in ECPGR International Treaty was signed Budget program on support for preservation and utilization of PGR was established in Budgetary support in 2011 for preservation of GR was 44,000 euro (mainly directed to AnGR) 16
