1 Volume 14, Edition 17 Friday 27th MAY 2016 WINTON, QLD 4735 In these ultra modern times, it is a refreshing change to see that some traditions and values haven t completely departed us. Winton Show Ball Committee presented four wonderful young ladies of the community on Saturday evening in their Debutante s Ball. Lauren and Racheal Nutting, Rhiannon Collins and August Crapp all raised their hands to be apart of the Debutante tradition with willing partners in Samuel Heslin, Gavin Patterson, Joshua Murphy and David Purcell (pictured below). Melissa Eliott and her executive committee of Lisa Pinky Johnson, Kylie Britton and Tahnee Oakhill presented to the community a delicately detailed and truly gorgeous ball in a perfectly fitting tribute to these emerging young ladies. The butterfly was the special emblem for the evening representing the symbolic coming of age of the young girls to emerging ladies in Winton society. Melissa introduced the Debs to the official party for the evening which consisted of Guest of Honour, Sargent Matt Rowe, and Winton Show President, John Paine and wife Katrina. Jenny Elliott kindly made and donated the cake for the Debutante s to cut and they were later gifted with a silver bracelet each as a keep sake of the event. Special thanks must go to charity Drought Angel s who donated a gift card to the Show Ball committee which paid for the bracelets. The lucky door prize this year was a spectacular week s paid accommodation at the Chevron Renaissance Resort on the Gold Coast which was won by Jenelle Cant and generously donated by The Banbidge Family. 3 COMMUNITY NEWS COUNCIL UPDATE Winton Meals on Wheels Volunteers Welcome One hour of your day every fortnight Please contact Jenny Elliott on HAY RHODES 4 * 3 round bales; Good protein; Excellent dry matter; Great for weaners and beef building; Delivery arranged. Phone Winton Shire Council has been working on the development of a Geothermal Electricity Plant over the last two years to service Council assets. Council has, over the last two Council meetings, approved tenders for two of the three major components of the system, by endorsing the purchase of the geothermal generation plants from Victorian based manufacturer gtet, for approximately $1,356,000 and the cooling solution from Marley Flow Systems for approximately $643,111. The final component of the system is the distribution network for the power. Council is currently negotiating with Ergon to use the Ergon network to distribute the electricity to Council facilities. If an agreement cannot be reached with Ergon, the total project budget provides for a private distribution network to be constructed at a cost of $770,000. The total budget is $3,500,000, funded by a $1,500,000 loan, $1,500,000 from cash reserves and $500,000 from a State Government Grant. The project is expected to generate savings to Council and the community in the order of $13,000,000 over the life of the plant and will reduce the risk to Council assets from fluctuations in the power supply. Council is about to commence negotiations to roll out some of the direct benefits of the project to residents. Winton Herald Page 3 Friday 27th May 2016
4 COMMUNITY NEWS As the newly elected Publicity Officer of the Historical Society, I have decided to contribute some of the stories of the Winton WW1 soldiers. These stories are housed in the railway carriage reading room at the Museum. The original folders were painstakingly put together by a dedicated band of volunteers for the WW1 exhibition More Than a Name that had just opened at the Waltzing Matilda Centre before it was destroyed by fire. The folders have been reprinted and sleeved and are available for viewing. It was a hard job deciding which stories should be told. My personal opinion is that every soldier who goes off to war deserves to have his story told. Ideally we would love a picture of each soldier and be able to put a face to the name (even though most of these faces are heartbreakingly young). If anyone has any more information on a soldier we would love to hear from them. The Museum is free to locals so please come in and have a read and remember some long ago names that gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
