This information is intended to support s with their duty to promote research on matters relevant to the health service as outlined in the Health and Social Care Act (2012). We acknowledge that this information may provide only an element of the local research picture within a geographical area as this report focuses on research studies that are included on the NIHR CRN Portfolio and does not cover research activity that occurs within other research infrastructure such as the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network, Biomedical Research Centres, Clinical Research Facilities or NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands. 2 Section 2: NIHR CRN National Overview High Level Objectives (HLO) The Clinical Research Network measures its effectiveness against a set of high level objectives set by the Department of Health. In broad terms, these objectives include: 1. Increasing the number of participants recruited into studies on NIHR CRN Portfolio. 2. Increasing the proportion of NIHR CRN Portfolio studies that deliver in line with the study's planned delivery time and patient recruitment targets. 3. Increasing the number of life-sciences studies on NIHR CRN Portfolio 4. Reducing the time it takes for a study to set up and start participant recruitment. 5. Reducing the length of time it takes to recruit the first participant onto NIHR CRN Portfolio studies. 6. Increase the percentage of Trusts and General Medical Practices that are involved in delivering NIHR CRN Portfolio studies. 7. Increase the number of participants recruiting into Dementias and Neurodegenerative (DeNDRoN) studies on the NIHR CRN Portfolio. CRN: East Midlands Research Delivery & Performance Report Page 2 of 23
3 Section 3: CRN East Midlands Overview The CRN East Midlands supports clinical research in partner organisations across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire. CRN East Midlands is currently the 4 th highest recruiting Clinical Research Network in England, with 41,699 participants recruited into 798 NIHR CRN Portfolio studies, as shown in figure 1. CRN: East Midlands has a High Level Objective (HLO) to recruit 46,000 participants to NIHR CRN Portfolio studies in 2017/18. Current recruitment is 90.7% of the year end recruitment goal. 5 Recruitment Section 4: Provider Trusts (Nottinghamshire) The CRN East Midlands provides NIHR CRN Portfolio reports for local trusts. These reports include details of open studies, participant recruitment, recruitment to time and target, involvement in commercial research and recruitment by clinical specialty area. There are 16 Trusts in the East Midlands, all in receipt of CRN funding to aid the delivery of NIHR Portfolio research. The total participant recruitment numbers for the three Trusts within Nottinghamshire are shown in Figure 3. Figure 5 shows recruitment by CRN specialty area for the Nottinghamshire Trusts. 7 Recruitment Section 5: Primary Care Organisations (East Midlands) 5.1 Primary Care High Level Objective (HLO) The CRN: East Midlands has an HLO measuring the proportion of General Medical Practices recruiting each year into NIHR CRN Portfolio studies. 10 Section 6: Primary Care Organisations (Nottinghamshire) 6.1 Overview of Nottinghamshire s In (1 April 2017 to 29 January 2018), Primary Care sites in Nottinghamshire have recruited 1,134 participants into CRN Portfolio studies, with the highest number of participants recruited in Nottingham City with 686 Figure 10 shows overall participant recruitment by Nottinghamshire s for 2017/18.
