3 BLUEBELL WALK Saturday 30 April 2011 For the last two years we have held a tour of Hart Wood to look at the bluebells, which have reappeared in good numbers as a result of our long term regeneration work in the wood. Work has continued this year, so hopefully we shall see even more bluebells! This year s Bluebell Walk will take place on Saturday 30th April. I am aware that this is a Bank Holiday weekend (and therefore not ideal for everyone) but we believe that this will be the peak weekend for the bluebells (the bluebells work to their own schedule, unaffected by Bank Holidays and Royal Weddings!). It is just possible we may have to move the date if the bluebells are flowering early (last year it was a very late Spring and the opposite happened the tour was delayed to the 8 th May) in which case we would notify all those who had asked to go on the tour. We will meet at 10.00am in the Covered Yard just above the Church and return by about 12.30pm at the latest. If you are interested in coming on the Bluebell Walk, please me on charles@gbfco.com or text/call my mobile Charles Ryder FARM/WOODLAND TOUR Saturday 4 June 2011 Please note that the annual Farm/Woodland Tour will take place on Saturday 4 June 2011 starting at the usual time of 4.00pm. Full details will be in the April edition of the Bugle. 4 Les & Anne s Nature Notes Big Birds of Prey A lot of people ask us about large birds of prey that they see usually saying "I don't think it was a Buzzard, it was the wrong colour". This is an easy mistake to make as most people assume Buzzards are predominantly brown. However Buzzards can vary wildly in colour, from very pale to almost chocolate brown. Consult any good bird guide and it will give many variations. The name Common Buzzard has in the past been rather misleading, as recently as 2005 they were looked on as scarce in Suffolk but I am happy to say that here in Great Bradley at least, they seem to be doing quite well. (Ed. apologies that there wasn t room for this month s photo) You are unlikely to see anything larger than a Buzzard around here although we are getting reports of Red Kites in and around Kirtling but we have yet to confirm this. Staying with birds of prey, there was a report of an escaped Eagle Owl from Keddington, and Anne had the pleasure of seeing a Barn Owl fly down our back garden and across Clarendale in mid February! It's good to see and hear so many small birds in the garden too, a sure sign that spring is just around the corner. I have a pair of Collared Doves nesting at work already. Our year bird list has, not unsurprisingly, slowed, it now stands at 75, but it was good to tick off Waxwings when we visited Oakington Garden Centre recently. We will shortly be starting to monitor our Barn Owl box more closely, in the hope of another successful breeding year. Happy Spotting Les & Anne Essex and Suffolk Water - Abberton Scheme Pipelines In addition to the enhancement of Abberton Reservoir, the Abberton Scheme includes the installation of two large raw water pipelines. One pipeline will run parallel to the upper reaches of the River Stour from Kirtling Green in Suffolk to Wixoe on the Essex/Suffolk border. The second pipeline will run from Wormingford on the River Stour to Abberton Reservoir. Essex & Suffolk Water is investing 150 million on the complete Scheme, which will help ensure a secure water supply to one and half million people in Essex. Working on behalf of Essex & Suffolk Water, Farrans Construction Ltd will be undertaking work in your area to install the new raw water pipeline from Kirtling Green to Wixoe. Both Essex & Suffolk Water and Farrans are committed to working with the local community throughout the construction process to ensure that work goes as smoothly as possible. If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the works taking place please don t hesitate to get in touch. You can contact us by: Telephone (9am 5pm, Monday to Friday): Out of hours: abberton@eswater.co.uk Or you can write to us: Louise Evans, Essex & Suffolk Water, Sandon Valley House, Canon Barns Road, East Hanningfield, Chelmsford CM3 8BD For more information about the Abberton Scheme and maps of the pipeline routes, please visit our website Abberton Scheme Water Pipeline: An Update Relating to Great Bradley Essex and Suffolk Water (and most particularly, their contractors, Farrans) will shortly be commencing preliminary work along the route of the pipeline. Intensive work (i.e. laying the pipeline) is unlikely to begin until May: I hope to provide a definite timetable (subject to weather conditions!) in the April edition of the Bugle. In the meantime, the preliminary work will consist of the following: Marking out with posts and ropes, the route of the pipeline and the necessary working area (usually a width of 30 metres). Coppicing and cutting hedges (5 metres width) along the route. Any necessary replanting will, of course, take place in the Autumn. Installing a land drain on the topside of the pipeline route to connect into our existing network of land drains. Further land drainage work will, of course, be required when the pipeline itself is installed. A limited amount of archaeological work. Regular walkers will obviously see this preliminary work taking place over the next few weeks, but it should have very little general impact. These preliminary works should be complete by the end of March. It is intended that all pipeline work in the Great Bradley area will be completed by the end of August. Charles Ryder 16 February

5 Parish Council News Parish Footpaths We have a very good network of public footpaths in Great Bradley. In general they seem to be in good condition, but things do occasionally need attention, and we need you to help us spot when anything is wrong so we can get it fixed. So if you see broken or missing signs or finger posts, wobbly stiles, rotten bridges, excessively long grass or especially anything that could be potentially dangerous, please let Anne Smith (15 Clarendale, , caulky@waitrose.com) or any other member of the Parish Council know. Thank You Digital Switchover Just in case you haven t heard, the old analogue TV transmitters that serve our area are being switched off this year. After this, if you haven t got a digital TV, or a freeview box, or satellite, you won t be able to receive TV channels at all. Even if you do have a digital TV or freeview box, you will need to retune it twice on two dates two weeks apart. Most people in Great Bradley (those whose TV aerial points approximately east) get their TV signals from the Sudbury transmitter. The dates for this transmitter are 6 July and 20 July. Some people though (those whose aerial points approximately west) get their signal from the Sandy Heath transmitter. The dates for this transmitter are this month, 30 March and 13 April. This diagram will help you work out which transmitter you are using: There is a low cost help scheme for those who are over 75 or disabled see or call If you know of someone in the village who is likely to have difficulty with this switchover, or to be confused about what to do, please do offer to help. We don t want people to be deprived of their favourite programmes by this change, or to be anxious about it. Rowan Sylvester-Bradley Cruse Bereavement Care - caring for bereaved people for 50 years Cruse Bereavement Care is the largest bereavement care charity in the UK, with 178 branches throughout the country and 6,300 volunteers. For 50 years, Cruse volunteers have offered practical and emotional support to the families and friends of those who have died. In the early years, the charity was for the support of widows, but now Cruse is there for everyone bereaved by death: the 83-year old widow who cannot imagine life without her beloved husband of 60 years; the 10-year old boy whose mum is not there to watch his first football match; the hardworking nurse and mother who is shocked by how devastated she is by the death of her elderly dad. Cruse s highly-trained bereavement volunteers are there for them all, offering faceto-face, group or telephone support. Cruse in Suffolk aims, like Cruse throughout the country, to offer free information, advice and support to anyone who is bereaved, regardless of age, race, culture or background. They hope to enable bereaved people to move forward and to regain a sense of future hope and independence. Cruse in Suffolk is in urgent need of people not only to train as bereavement support volunteers but also to help in many other ways, such as fundraising, administration, PR, etc. If you feel you have the time and commitment to become involved in this worthwhile work, please consider joining a training course for bereavement volunteers or contacting Cruse to find out how else you can help. The charity is committed to continue to care for all those who are grieving throughout the county and we are determined to be able to reach anyone who needs us. St Edmundsbury Rural News extracts from February 2011 edition Suffolk s Libraries Tuesday 18 January 2011 marked the start of a major consultation entitled Have your say on the future of Suffolk's libraries which seeks innovative approaches to running the library service of the future. The consultation encourages community and voluntary groups, businesses, local councils and individuals across Suffolk to have their say about running their local library differently and at reduced cost to the council. The deadline for responses is 30 April As a result of reductions in the county council s funding, the library service will need to cost Suffolk County Council at least 30% less to deliver within three years. As part of the New Strategic Direction, which is being developed to help protect services throughout the current financial climate, the county council is looking for new, innovative ways of running Suffolk s libraries. This first phase of the consultation will focus on inviting innovative ideas for running library services differently. All ideas will be reviewed, and the next phase will involve formal invitations to express interest. For more information, please visit: Suffolk Circle, an exciting new membership organisation for people over 50 Suffolk Circle is now open for new members in Bury St Edmunds and the surrounding villages. As a member you will be able to get out and about, get useful things done and learn new skills. Each month you will receive a social calendar containing a diverse range of get-togethers. In recent months some of the events have made the most of our rural areas, for example getting together for a walk in Bradfield woods, attending a Burns Night Ceilidh in Lavenham and seeing the Cuban Creole Choir at an event in Bury St Edmunds. For many people in rural areas, social life can be affected by a lack of transport. The Circle helps by hooking members up together to get to and from events linking those offering lifts with those wanting one. This means that members can travel together, saving both petrol and hassle. Suffolk Circle members are also able to get a hand with practical jobs around the house. Sometimes these are tasks like putting up shelves or gardening, or they could be about learning things like how to send a text message or how to shop online and get your groceries delivered to your door. The Circle will link members up with other members, or with helpers, to help out with these practical tasks. The official launch of Suffolk Circle is on 12 February at the arc shopping centre in Bury St Edmunds, but members are able to join now and take advantage of their membership early. Membership costs 2.50 a month or 30 per year and members then buy tokens to join events or to request help with jobs. Janet Walker, one of the founder members involved in the development of the model in Suffolk, lives in Cockfield. She said: I joined to have more of a social life and to get a bit of help with things around the house. Since joining I have had some help at home and been out to some fantastic events! 7 NEWSPAPER DELIVERIES IN GREAT BRADLEY First of all, very many thanks to Mary and Chris Atherton for their efficient, friendly newspaper deliveries. It is such a treat to have early papers and magazines and has been very much appreciated. THURLOW NEWS will be taking over the deliveries from 6 March. Naomi Sharrod, who will be delivering the newspapers and magazines for us, runs this new business. She will be accepting the voucher scheme and also, for those who use Internet banking, there will be a facility for paying using this system. Naomi will tell you more about that. Otherwise payment can be made in the usual way. You may well have met Naomi as she was hoping to contact as many existing customers as possible before 6 th March. It is anticipated that the newspaper deliveries will continue much as in the past and if you need to contact her please do so using any of the contact information below. Naomi Sharrod, Langdale Lodge, The Street, Great Thurlow CB9 7LA T: Mob: E: naomisharrod@hotmail.co.uk Ed: We wish Naomi a long and happy association with the village and thank her very much for taking on the newspaper and magazine deliveries. Great Bradley Litter Pick 2011 Once again you are invited to join us to help with our Village Spring Clean, which this year will be on Saturday 2 April, meeting outside the Village Hall at 10am. This is a feel good opportunity to enjoy some fresh air and a little exercise and help Great Bradley to look its best, when our hedgerows and verges are coming into flower, by removing the litter that so disfigures our roadsides and elsewhere. Children are very welcome too they are often keener at taking care of our environment than are many adults! Grabbers, gloves, rubbish bags and high visibility jackets or tabards will all be supplied (courtesy of St Edmundsbury Borough Council). As the Village Hall cannot be used at present Charles Ryder and his family have very kindly invited us to the Office in Great Bradley Hall drive where we will have our refreshments afterwards so yet another good reason for coming! The more volunteers, the sooner we shall be finished, so make a note in your diary now Saturday 2 April, 10am at the Village Hall we hope to see you then! Geoffrey Vollam (783132) Suffolk Fair Trading information Following a number of complaints, Suffolk Trading Standards are warning residents to be vigilant when opening their doors to companies offering burglar alarms for as little as a pound. A salesperson may cold call by telephone and insist on visiting the same day to discuss the installation of a free or cheap alarm. Companies may also use high-pressure tactics to scaremonger residents. Based on previous complaints, Trading Standards found that the companies failed to mention hidden fees for the monitoring, upkeep and rapid response facilities. Some residents have found themselves tied into a long contract agreement costing thousands of pounds. James Garrett, Suffolk Fair Trading Officer said; "We are urging residents, especially elderly or vulnerable people, to be aware of such calls. Our advice is not to buy anything based on a cold call. If you intend to make a major purchase always research the market and get at least three quotes from reputable companies." If residents do not wish to receive unsolicited sales and marketing telephone calls, they can register for free via the Telephone Preference Service on or Anybody with any concerns should phone Consumer Direct for advice on If you are concerned about an incident please contact Suffolk Police on or 999 if a crime is in progress. Watoto (named after a church in Uganda) is an holistic care programme that was initiated by an American couple as a response to the overwhelming number of orphaned children and vulnerable women in Uganda, whose lives have been ravaged by war and disease. The Watoto model is based on the core vision to rescue, raise and rebuild. The charity has built children s villages complete with schools and other facilities, which provide a homely environment, where children are housed, clothed, fed and educated in small groups each with a mother to care for them. The goal is to provide holistic, residential care for every child so that each one will become a responsible Christian and a productive citizen of Uganda and Africa. Living Hope is another part of their work with a programme committed to transforming the lives of women in Kampala and Gulu. Left abandoned or widowed, the target group is HIV positive, single women, returnees from abduction and teenage mothers. Some of you may have heard the Watoto choir when it visited Haverhill on 1 st and 2 nd February. We would like to make a donation to this charity.
