5 CHAPTER 1 LANGKAWI ISLAND GATEWAYS An Assessment of Facilities at Jetty Terminals SHARDY ABDULLAH & ARMAN ABDUL RAZAK 1.1 ABSTRACT Within the tourism sector, numerous support facilities have been provided for by the government in order to increase the levels of attractiveness as well as satisfaction towards tourist destinations. In Langkawi Island, these facilities are placed in various locations, including jetty terminals which act as gateways to this tourist destination. The main objective of this study is to assess satisfaction levels among tourists towards the facilities provided at the three jetty terminals to Langkawi Island selected as the research sites. This study was carried out via survey where questionnaire forms were distributed among tourists who have visited the jetty terminals. 437 sets of duly completed questionnaires were collected and subsequently analyzed using statistical analysis methods. The findings show that the overall satisfaction among tourists towards facilities provided at jetty terminals to be at the less than satisfied level. The study findings have also discovered that the functionality aspect was found to be the most considered aspect among tourists in evaluating their satisfaction levels towards these facilities. Finally, this study revealed that tourist satisfaction levels do not influence tourists decision in making repeat visits to Langkawi Island. KEYWORDS: tourist satisfaction, facilities, jetty terminal, gateways. 1
