1 Report: Employers in the UK 2016 What makes a company an employer of choice? Details for more than 950 employers in the UK based on over 15,000 interviews In association with

2 Introduction 2 Dear reader, After a period of relatively high unemployment following the financial crisis, the UK labour market is showing signs of recovery. Since 2012 the employment rate has been increasing and for the time period August to October 2015 it reached a record high of 73.9%. In 2015 about half a million more people were employed than in the previous year. Wage growth has only recently started to pick up, showing an increase of +2.9% from 2014 to 2015 (1). Competition in the labour market is increasing and everyone is looking to gain a competitive edge in the race to attract and more importantly retain top talent. The latest generation of labour market entrants are more willing to change jobs to find a perfect fit than ever before. In this context, a number of questions are particularly important for UK employers: How do I compare to other employers on the job market? How can I build a better reputation, conduct better practices within my company, and ultimately attract and retain the best candidates? This report contains concrete results on over 950 employers surveyed (i.e. those employing more than 500 employees in the UK). The top 400 employers have been awarded a Best UK Employer 2016 certificate, while a score for over 550 others has been calculated. Throughout the report, you will discover your company s strengths and weaknesses, as well as those of your competitors; in each of the 25 industry sectors, we have identified the most important players and established an average. The outcome of the survey in terms of employee s perception has been interpreted in detail through 6 drivers that determine an employer s attractiveness. Overall, you will learn possible optimization points and insights about over 950 employer brands. We hope you will enjoy reading this report! That is why Statista.com, in partnership with Bloomberg, decided to ask those who know best: UK employees. In a survey of over 15,000 UK employees working for large national firms, divisions of international companies, or institutions (including hospitals and government organisations) respondents were asked to rate 30 work related attributes grouped in terms of atmosphere, remuneration, diversity etc. and most importantly were asked this particular question: On a scale of 0-10, how likely would you be to recommend your employer to someone? Thanks to the results of this survey, conducted anonymously via online access panels and not via the employers, we have established the UK s 400 best employers across 25 industry sectors (3). 5 Basis: the employer ranking is based on over 15,000 employee recommendations 5 The survey has been conducted using an online access panel, providing a representative sample of over 15,000 employees working part- or full-time for companies and institutions employing more than 500 employees in the UK Online access panel 15,000 participants: Survey Full-time (> 35 hours per week) Part-time (< 35 hours per week) Unemployed Self-employed Company size < 500 employees

6 Calculation of the employers score: Combination of direct and indirect scores 6 Over 950 employers have been attributed a score, based on the two main elements below: 1. Direct score: willingness to recommend one s own employer 2. Indirect score: willingness to recommend other employers In order to measure the willingness to recommend one s own employer, the following question has been asked: On a scale of 0 to 10, how likely is it that you would recommend your employer to a friend or family member? (0: I wouldn t recommend my employer under any circumstances, 10: I would definitely recommend my employer). The participants have also been asked if there are employers they would recommend to their acquaintances, or, on the contrary, if there are employers they would not recommend their acquaintances to work for. Employer 1 Employer 2 Participant Participant s employer Participant Employer X The results of these two elements have been combined to calculate a final score for over 950 employers in the UK, with a greater weight given to the direct score, i.e. willingness of the participants to recommend their own employer.
