LH12 D-Day Beaches & Bayeux Tapestry Page 15 of 68 Updated:January 17, :32 AM
16 Adult / Child USD 11 hr(s) 8:15 am Leaving Le Havre, you will drive through the Norman Landscape to go to the city of Bayeux capital of the region of Normandy called Bessin, with a 20 hundred years history. It was the first French town to be liberated after D Day, and was fortunate not to have been damaged during the war. The town has been miraculously preserved through all these years and offers to visitors the charm of its old streets bordered by typical timber framed houses. There you will admire the world famous Tapestry of Bayeux: known as Queen Mathilda's tapestry, it is in fact an embroidery on a 70 meters ( 230 feet ) long linen cloth. It narrates the causes and the beginning of the conquest of England by William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, who became King of England after the battle of Hastings in The tapestry is considered as one of the most accurate and lively document to survive from the middle ages and provides detailed information on the clothes, ships, arms and general lifestyle during this period. You will then have some time to discover the old town on your own, before enjoying your meal in a local restaurant. After lunch, you will drive to the Landing Beaches for an afternoon of remembrance: At 9.15 pm on June 5th, the BBC announced to the French Resistance that the landing was imminent, signaling to the underground to start dynamiting the railways. By midnight, Allied planes had begun bombing the Normandy Coast and by 1.30 am, June 6th, members of the 101st Airborne were parachuting onto German-occupied French soil. The "longest day," also called D DAY - June 6, 1944 had started. The day soldiers, sailors, warship, landing craft, tugboats, and jeeps that had been assembled along the southern coast of England set out for the Normandy Coast, for the landing on the beaches of Juno, Gold, Sword, Utah, and Omaha. Your tour will start at Omaha Beach, where the American troops suffered heavy casualties in one of the most costly of the D Day Battles. The austere and desolate appearance of the eastern part of the beach makes the invasion scenes easy to imagine, even today. Then you will then visit the huge American Cemetery of Colleville, overlooking Omaha Beach, it contains 9,387 perfectly aligned white crosses, on a 170 acre plot. Then, driving along the beaches to Arromanches, a modest seaside resort which owes its fame to the remains of a Mulberry harbour. Our next stop is in Longues Sur Mer, to see the only German artillery battery to have kept its guns, giving an impressive picture of what the Atlantic Wall gun emplacement was really like. Note: Participation on this tour is extremely limited. Guests must be able to walk approximately 1.5 miles over uneven cobblestone surfaces, loose gravel and 10 to 15 steps. Time permitting, guests will have approximately 30 minutes at leisure while in Bayeux. He successfully rose to the challenge before him, seeking inspiration in architectural tradition and drawing on his own strong desire for modernization to reinvent a unique, open city centre that is harmonious and resolutely innovative across an area of 133 hectares. Le Havre city centre is the first 20 th century urban settlement in Europe to be added to the World Heritage list. After few minutes driving with the shuttle from pier to City centre, you will start your walking tour with your guide. Passing the Town hall, Saint Roch gardens, avenue Foch, Saint Joseph church, Rue Emile Renouf, Boulevard Clemenceau, Malraux museum, Rue de Paris, Le Volcan, Auguste Perret Square, Rue Victor Hugo You will enjoy this typical architecture of Le Havre. GS01 Guernsey Island Drive Adult / Child USD 2 hr(s) 30 min(s) 9:00 am, 12:00 pm Overview Guernsey is a green, beautiful Island belonging to the British Crown situated within sight of the Normandy coast of France. Its French influence is everywhere - in street names, its Patois, which is a mixture of Norman-French and English, and its love of fine cuisine. On this scenic drive, you will visit the Little Chapel - set in quiet countryside and along a tree lined path, a church in miniature. Painstakingly built singe-handedly over many years by Brother Deodat of the de la Salle Brothers, in a setting reminiscent of the grotto at Lourdes. Crossing to the West Coast we see a contrast of cliffs and stretches of beautiful sandy beaches as we travel for a visit to the Gold and Silversmiths - a thriving and interesting manufacturing base set in five acres of landscaped gardens. Watch the work being carried out at close quarters and have some time to browse and maybe purchase that special gift, before enjoying a panoramic drive on the way back to the port. Highlights: ~ Little Chapel ~ Gold and Silversmith ~ Guernsey Scenery ~ panoramic drive Full Description Guernsey is a green, beautiful Island belonging to the British Crown situated within sight of the Normandy coast of France. Its French influence is everywhere - in street names, its Patois, which is a mixture of Norman-French and English, and its love of fine cuisine. It used to be thought that the name Guernsey had evolved from an old word meaning `Green Island` and there is no doubt that because of its Guernsey is a green, beautiful Island belonging to the British Crown situated within sight of the climate and the quality of its sunlight, Guernsey s soil is highly productive. From the profusion of wild flowers and the colourful displays in every garden, to the production of flowers, tomatoes and other fruit and vegetables grown in greenhouses, the Island makes good use of what nature provides. Crossing the centre of the Island, where we see large areas of the countryside with greenhouses, we can appreciate the importance of the horticultural industry to the economy of the Island. This part of the Island also has an abundance of wild plants and flowers, many of which flourish in Guernsey s mild climate, including Mediterranean varieties at their northernmost limits. You will go on to visit the Little Chapel - set in quiet countryside and along a tree lined path, a church in miniature. Painstakingly built singe-handed over many years by Brother Deodat of the de la Salle Brothers, in a setting reminiscent of the grotto at Lourdes. Made of simple materials, it is beautifully decorated with pebbles, shells and myriad pieces of coloured broken china and reflects the skill and devotion displayed by the builder. As you climb the steps around the Chapel, and perhaps enter the tiny interior, you enjoy a sense of appreciation of the dedication shown in creating this unique religious symbol. Page 19 of 68 Updated:January 17, :32 AM
20 Crossing to the West Coast we see a contrast of cliffs and stretches of beautiful sandy beaches, the rock pools uncovered by the receding tides a delight for the young visitor, whilst surfing attracts the sporting enthusiasts. We travel along almost the entire length of the west coast before turning inland again along the narrow country lanes to arrive for a visit to the Gold and Silversmiths, a thriving and interesting manufacturing base set in five acres of landscaped gardens. The workshops are themselves situated in an attractively converted barn which dates back to You can watch the work being carried out at close quarters. On a number of occasions, the craftsmen of this workshop have been chosen to make articles for presentation by the people of Guernsey to commemorate special events. The exquisite craftsmanship is on display in the showroom where you have time to browse and maybe purchase that special gift. You then enjoy a panoramic drive on the way back to the port. What to Wear: ~ Warm, layered clothing and flat, comfortable shoes. ~ Raingear in case of inclement weather. Important Notes: N/a GS02 Guernsey Military Occupation Adult / Child USD 3 hr(s) 30 min(s) 9:00 am Overview The Channel Islands were the only British territory to be occupied by the Germans during the Second World War, and looking at the remnants of the German defences of Guernsey today, the observer cannot fail to be impressed by the sheer scale of the undertaking. On entering the Occupation Museum we are greeted by a model of an evacuee of June 1940 reminding us that half of Guernsey s population and most of the schoolchildren were evacuated. Afterwards, continue with a short transfer to the Underground Hospital and Munitions Store. It is the largest structural reminder of the German Occupation existing in the Channel Islands. This maze of tunnels covers an area of about 75,000 square feet. Almost invisible from the surface, this vast concrete maze is built under a low hill in the heart of the Guernsey countryside. The hospital was equipped with an operating theatre, kitchen, cinema, staff quarters and wards for 500 patients these numbers could be doubled in an emergency. Highlights: ~ Occupation Museum ~ Underground Hospital and Munitions Store Full Description The Channel Islands were the only British territory to be occupied by the Germans during the Second World War, and looking at the remnants of the German defences of Guernsey today, the observer cannot fail to be impressed by the sheer scale of the undertaking. Yet overall these structures are the product of barely two and a half years work, from early 1942 until the late summer 1944, by which time the Channel Islands had been effectively isolated from mainland Europe as allied forces advanced from the D- Day beaches. Today we visit two sites which clearly reflect parts of the occupation and which tell the story of the occupation from June 1940 to May Page 20 of 68 Updated:January 17, :32 AM
21 On entering the Occupation Museum we are greeted by a model of an evacuee of June 1940 reminding us that half of Guernsey s population and most of the schoolchildren were evacuated. We see a selection of band instruments used by some of the 12,000 troops stationed in Guernsey, together with uniforms, weapons and equipment. In the civilian room, the day to day life of the islanders can be gleaned from reading the various orders, permits and censored newspapers, together with diaries they kept. The occupation kitchen sets the scene of a town household in late 1944 and you also see a purpose made horse-drawn ambulance built in 1944 because of petrol rationing. Along the occupation street is a selection of interesting sites depicting life in St. Peter Port during this period. We then continue with a short transfer to the Underground Hospital and Munitions Store. Although the Hospital and Ammunition Store are almost empty today we can still see some signs of their previous uses. Much of the heating plant remains; there are hospital beds to be seen and signs of the cooking arrangements. Along the two main corridors we can also see the X-ray room, laboratory, dispensary, staff sleeping quarters, store rooms, cinema and mortuary. The Hospital was actually in use for only about three months, and it would not have been used then had not several hundreds of Germans wounded been brought over from France soon after D-Day. Their stay in this huge vault was scarcely beneficial, for after three or four weeks their faces were as white as sheets! What to Bring: ~ Camera ~ Cash for shopping (most local shops accept British Sterling, some accept major credit cards). What to Wear: ~ Warm, layered clothing and flat, comfortable shoes. ~ Raingear in case of inclement weather. We walk from the Pier around the harbour front and listen to fascinating tales of how passengers, porters, privateers and publicans, jostled and shouted as they made their way from the busy port, up into the steep lanes and passageways which linked the quay with the town. Enjoy stories while weaving around the cobbled streets of St. Peter Port and make your way along the seafront towards the majestic medieval Castle Cornet. Entering the castle, built in the 13th century to defend the surrounding waters, you will begin to understand what life was like for those living in this imposing fortress. From mangonel to musket, crossbow to cannonfire, the secrets held within the castle are unlocked by your Guide. Guernsey is well known for a local delicacy of fruit bread gache, pronounced `gosh` and we enjoy refreshments of coffee and gache at the end of the tour. 22 ~ refreshments of coffee and gache ~ Stories from the guide Full Description Let your Guide take you back to a bygone era, when St. Peter Port harbour was alive with the sights and sounds of trade. We walk from the Pier around the harbour front and listen to fascinating tales of how passengers, porters, privateers and publicans, jostled and shouted as they made their way from the busy port, up into the steep lanes and passageways which linked the quay with the town. Boasting the best anchorage in the English Channel, and sheltered from the prevailing winds, the port offered a safe haven for many a ship, seeking refuge from a violent storm. Smuggling, legalised piracy, the lucrative entrepot port, and of course the wine trade, are the subject of stories woven around the cobbled streets of St. Peter Port, our Guide tells us about as we make our way along the seafront towards the majestic medieval Castle Cornet. We also hear about the Black Death or Bubonic Plague of the 14th century, carried by rats as they scurried through the steep lanes and passageways linking the port with the merchant s houses, which wiped out half of Guernsey s population. The swiftness of the disease, the terrible pain, and the grotesque appearance of the victims, all served to make the plague especially terrifying. Entering the castle, built in the 13th century to defend the surrounding waters, you will begin to understand what life was like for those living in this imposing fortress. The deprivation, the dank stench from the dungeons, the constant danger of invasion and the many deaths within its walls are brought to life by the Guide s narration. You will re-live the medieval myths, murders and manifestations which took place in this captivating fortress. From mangonel to musket, crossbow to cannonfire, the secrets held within the castle are unlocked by your Guide. Guernsey is well known for a local delicacy of fruit bread gache, pronounced `gosh` and we enjoy refreshments of coffee and gache at the end of the tour. Subject to sailing time, you may then care to remain at Castle Cornet to independently explore the excellent museums, or you can return towards the centre of St. Peter Port for shopping. Note: Please wear appropriate clothing for a walking tour, and non-slip footwear. The walk will make stops for photographs and approximately one and a half hours is spent walking and visiting What to Bring: ~ Camera ~ Cash for shopping (most local shops accept British Sterling, some accept major credit cards).
