9 PEGASUS Vandalism Update Nick Dodson. crichard Barber. Pullman car PEGASUS passing Bradbury (North of Darlington) within the formation of the 1Z18 Newcastle Kings Cross private charter on Saturday October 17 th On the damage front I am pleased to report that repairs have been effected. The table lamps are still missing and we are looking at their replacement in due course. The cabinet that was attacked turned out to have survived the assault quite well. That to the extent that whilst all the glass had to be replaced there was little material damage to the unit itself. In fact it looked far worse than it ultimately was. A local company County Locksmiths in Chandlers Ford stepped in to help with both a few minor timber repairs and the replacement glass and have enabled Pegasus to return to traffic very quickly. The costs have been met in part from insurance. The vehicle was fit to run with the A1 Tornado hauled Winton Train on September 4 th I am very grateful to everyone who shared our problem and offered help. Security at Eastleigh is generally good and the staff there were as surprised as we were at the incident. For safe keeping the vehicle will in future be stored under covered accommodation on the site. Identified as surplus to requirements and potential further use following modification as at that time envisaged for the Pullman Kitchen second class cars. November 1972 Acoustic Experiment on Pullman Car No.M323. Acoustic studies are being carried out with the above vehicle, and in order to accomplish this, instrumentation consisting of microphones and pressure measuring transducers are fixed both to the interior and exterior skin, but well within the loading gauge. In order to further these studies, and since locomotive noise would be detrimental to the acoustic measurements, arrangements have been made to attach this vehicle to the rear of the train ex Derby to York (07.30 ex Birmingham). At York, the vehicle should be detached and placed on the rear of the train York to Derby the same day. Coupé News No. 81 November Page 13 of 36

14 The required dates for the work are the 23 rd November, 30 th November, 7 th December and 14 th December. 16 FLYING SCOTSMAN NORTH AMERICAN TOUR - Jim Baldwin. candy Sturt. August E70632E at Twickenham Station. May I take this opportunity in thanking everyone who has responded to my request for any information on the train that accompanied Flying Scotsman on its North American Tour, this information is slowly coming together and the muddy waters are clearing. I would like to respond to the most magnificent photos - the clearest to date that I have seen and the detailed notes provided by Ian Gunn, of Flying Scotsman's tour of North America. I was fortunate some years ago, to acquire the bell, headlamp, pilot (cowcatcher) and smokebox door, as fitted to No on its North American adventure. They may be big in size, but they are on display at my home and always receive favourable comment from visitors. In the continuing story of the exhibition train's whereabouts, readers may be interested to read some information about the train when it left Boston. The formation of the train was as follows: Class A3, Locomotive No. 4472, FLYING SCOTSMAN. Tender No. 5325, Second water carrier No ADMINISTRATION CAR, No , RECEPTION CAR, No. E 104 E, EXHIBITION CAR A, No. E E EXHIBITION CAR B, No. E E, EXHIBITION CAR C, No. E E, EXHIBITION CAR D, No. E E, Pullman Car, LYDIA, Pullman Car, ISLE OF THANET, OBSERVATION CAR', No. SC 281 Coupé News No. 81 November Page 16 of 36

17 Car's A, B and C were open to all ticket holders, Car D was restricted to holders of trade tickets only. The ADMINISTRATION CAR, coach No , was built as part of a batch of coaches numbered W W21194, of Lot No , at the works of Charles Roberts & Co., The Lot, which was constructed between October 1956 and January 1959, was built to Dia. No. 172 and the entire batch were originally allocated to the Western Region of British Railways. This Corridor Brake Composite (BCK) design of coach, was very self-contained, as both passenger classes were accommodated, together with guards and luggage compartments. The side corridor gave access to the two First Class compartments, which had 12 seats located adjacent to the brake end and 24 Second Class seats (without arm rests) located in the remaining three compartments. This British Railways designed vehicle, was unusual in that, as well as having a lavatory compartment located at the end of the vehicle, next to the Second Class accommodation, it had another one located towards the centre of the vehicle, between the First Class and guards compartments. The luggage compartment carried 1 ton of luggage and the whole vehicle weighed in at 34 tons 10 cwt. It had an electrical train heating rating of 3, thus ETH3. Its position in the formation of the exhibition train, was such that, the coach had been positioned with its luggage compartment adjacent, to the next vehicle in the formation, No. E 104 E, namely the RECEPTION CAR. This allowed better utilisation for storage, as No. E 104 E was used for the storage of literature etc. Its Pullman livery of Umber & Cream, would have been a close approximation to the Chocolate & Cream livery that it would have worn during its duties on Western Region express trains, during its former life there. The RECEPTION CAR, coach No. E 104 E, was originally constructed as part of a batch of 35 gangwayed Bogie Brake Vans, which were built in 1948 at York to an Edward Thompson design and were originally numbered 13-19, and 110. They were built to Dia. No. 344 and were 63 feet long x 9 feet 3 inches wide. E 104 E's primary use in the exhibition train, was as a means for visitors to enter the exhibition. It had however, also been fitted out with a branch of LLOYDS BANK and was used for the storage of literature. The EXHIBITION CAR A, coach No. E E, was originally constructed as the last of a batch of 10 gangwayed Bogie Brake Vans, which were built in 1946 at York, to a design by Sir Nigel Gresley. Their original numbers were and they were built to Dia. No. 327 as gangwayed Bogie Brake Vans. They were 61 feet 6 inches long x 9 feet wide and had Real wood coach panelling. E E was used in the exhibition train to display products from the following exhibitors: 'THIS ENGLAND'....'This England', often called Britain's loveliest magazine is now fast becoming Britains best selling magazine in North America. 21 Pullman Car - LYDIA. It was being delivered by Alan Pegler to Green Bay Museum, Wisconsin. Pullman Car - ISLE OF THANET. It was being delivered to Green Bay Museum, Wisconsin. Pullman - OBSERVATION CAR, No. SC 281. The interior had been fitted out to resemble a traditional English pub and was called 'The Fireman's Rest'. Quote from the official tour catalogue: OBSERVATION CAR The elegant Edwardian Observation Car, the last of the nine cars on the Flying Scotsman train, still has the panoramic windows and style of more than half a century ago. Inside, however, it has been transformed into a replica of an old English pub with its velvet trappings and old mahogany bar. Here Eric Williams, Alan Pegler's impeccable butler will preside over the proceedings serving the drinks in an atmosphere that will be typically British. It is not only the atmospher that will be British. All the drinks to be served will be the most famous British beers and spirits. The utmost care has been taken to ensure that the Watney's ales and largers will be served in ideal conditions, whilst the world famous Cutty Sark whisky and Burrough's Beefeater Gin will be served exclusively with Schweppes mineral waters. The cigarettes will be by the House of Dunhill. Unfortunately, in order to comply with the American licensing requirements the Observation Car cannot be open to the general public. It is restricted to Flying Scotsman exhibitors and their guests and will become one of the most exclusive clubs to have operated on the mainline railroads of the United States. The exhibition train ended its first season at Green Bay Museum, Wisconsin. For its second season it travelled to Toronto with the complete train, except for Pullman Car Isle of Thanet, which stayed at Green Bay. At Toronto, Pullman Car Lydia was put into winter storage at Procor Works. For the third season, Flying Scotsman and its train made there way to San Francisco and after a spell hauling tourist trains along the seafront at Fisherman's Wharf, No and the train, were taken to an Army Base near Stockton, California, for safe storage. Pullman Car Lydia was transported back to Green Bay, Museum, Wisconsin, on the back of a 'flat-bed' truck. Observation Car SC 281 was sold to a company in San Francisco. Flying Scotsman and its two tenders then came back to England. Then, in 1977, coaches 21177, E 104 E, (both confirmed by photographic evidence) plus two other exhibition cars, reappeared back in the limelight and were on show to the public once more as part of the famed 'Victoria Station Restaurant' complex at Universal City Studios in California. The three baggage cars had been modified having had windows cut into their sides and had been fitted out as dining cars. The following numbers were applied to the coaches, although it is not clear which coach carried which number: E 42463, E16501, E16502 & E32372, however, due to photographic evidence, E 104 E carried either E16501 or E They also had plaques with the letters 'LB&SCR' on the sides as well as being painted in a 'cream and green' livery, not dis-similar to LNER Tourest-Stock livery. Victoria Station Restaurant closed in 1997, after which, it was re-fitted and re-themed into a 'Marvel Mania' eatery. So, four of the six unaccounted coaches were there from 1977 until But what happened then? The other two unaccounted-for cars, were apparently sent for scrap. 22 Their purchaser having bought them separately and advertised them in American Railroad periodicals as suitable for garden storage! With no buyers, he burned the wood and reclaimed the metal. So there is an update, if anyone can add, subtract or confirm any of this information, then I would be most grateful to hear from them. Further Update of October 13 th 2009 Jim Baldwin. A further update following a discussion Tom Carter who is a member of a American Railroad web group, about Scotsman train in North America. He advised me that he has two sets of works plates from two of Scotsman exhibition cars that went for scrap. All of the Scotsman baggage cars were built at Doncaster, however, these are from Metro-Camm at Wednesbury. Works Plates - Tom Carter. ctom Carter. As promised, here are photos of the builder s plates I have in my collection from the Scotsman's US tour. These two particular plates Dad got from two exhibit cars that were going to a local scrapper, so he liberated two, a co-worker snagged the other two. One plate is cracked in half due to them running out of acetylene in their work truck, so he had to pry what was left of the rivet off with a crowbar, and the plate cracked. Murray Brown Responds. Well, that is interesting! Straightaway, we have a mystery I had, perhaps wrongly, assumed that all Scotman s 1969 American tour vehicles were post-war Thompson design. Obviously, with a 1939 builder s plate not so. If we take the 1944 plate first here is the first mystery, for if you look in the complete list of all LNER carriages built, there were none at all built by any contractor or LNER Works in 1944! So, where on earth did this plate come from? Assuming, that the carriage may have actually first appeared in 1945 (having been built in 1944), there were none built by Met-Camm, only York and Doncaster. Coupé News No. 81 November Page 22 of 36

23 Second mystery - turning to 1939, the date of the other plate, the only LNER carriages built by Met- Camm that year were: Third Class compartment carriages (16). Lavatory Composite carriages (14). However all these were twin articulated carriages! As far as I recall, there were no articulated carriages sent to America with Scotsman! So, these photos form a real poser! If only some more facts or data can be gleamed from elsewhere to identify all the vehicles which went over with I will undertake further research and will respond with the findings. Editors Request. A request to the readership in the United States of America, can any reader add to the history of what became of the vehicles that accompanied A3 No.4472 Flying Scotsman. It s a missing gap in the history of the North American Tour. THE Mike Morant Pullman Collection. M.A.Morant Photographic Collection. 24 The 5 Bel Unit 2053 c Pamlin Prints M579. THE BRIGHTON BELLE PROJECT - Bringing the Brighton Belle back to the mainline! Neil Marshall Writes: - I wonder whether you can throw any light on an object that we are currently restoring. We were told it was the key cabinet used for the Belle and indeed it was but as you can see from the attached images, it was used for more than the Belle. My guess is that it hails from Preston Park. Our restorer, who is a fine cabinet craftsman, dates the wood and style to 1900, or a tad earlier. cneil Marshall. Coupé News No. 81 November Page 24 of 36

25 cneil Marshall. Do you know anyone who worked at Preston Park in the 50s and/or 60s? We are perplexed by the extra rows of [missing] hooks what might they have been used for? The doors and glazing will be renewed and we will ultimately have it on display at our home base. and Transport Trust, 202 Lambeth Road, London SE1 7JW, United Kingdom. 30 cpcsa POPULATING YOUR PULLMAN OBSERVATION CAR - Hornby. Following the huge success of the new Hornby Pullman Observation Car, Hornby demonstrate a simple step-by-step process on how to populate your Observation Car thus adding extra realism to this fantastic model. 1. Firstly, unscrew and detach both bogies. While detaching the bogies, great care should be taken as the internal lighting wires are connected. The process of removing the bogies will make the removal of the Observation Car body from the chassis easier as the body retaining tabs will be exposed. Coupé News No. 81 November Page 30 of 36

31 2. Using a small flat head screwdriver, gently ease all six of the retaining clips apart and remove the Observation Car body, taking great care as to not damage the internal wiring. The internal seating will now be exposed and ready to accommodate passengers. 3. The number of passengers placed within the Observation Car and seating positions is purely down to the modeller's own taste. By using Hornby R 561 People Sitting and a selection of any other suitable Hornby figures within the range, you can populate your Observation Car until you reach your desired effect. To avoid repeat passengers, it is suggested that you paint your passengers using Humbrol Acrylic paints so that the passengers appear to be in different clothing. 4. Once you have seated all of your passengers, gently replace the body onto the chassis by clicking the retaining tabs back into position. Take care not to trap the internal wiring as this could effect the operation of the Observation Car's lighting. 5. Re-position the Observation Cars bogies and secure using the retaining screws Job done...it s that simple! As always when using substances like this or polystyrene, another favourite modellers commodity it is necessary to act responsibly and to bear in mind that if misused, such substances can be flammable and give off toxic fumes in the unlikely event of their being accidentally ignited. Conclusion for adult use only and with great care. Coupé News No. 81 November Page 31 of 36

32 Simon Turner Director G.W.Railwayana Auctions Ltd T: M: E: W: Pullman items that will appear at the next auction on November 14 th by G.W.R.A. Ltd. 43 Pullman Company Silverplate Ice Bucket. A lovely item with carrying handle, engraved on side with large lettering 'Pullman' and also with the full crest with 'DD' (Dining Department) beneath. Manufactured by Joseph Westby & Co. so stamped beneath, it stands 5½" high and 4½" diameter at widest. In extremely good condition. 234 LBSCR Glass Paperweight with full company title around the periphery and the centre etched 'The Southern Belle Limited Pullman - The Last Word In Luxurious Travel - Victoria & Brighton In 60 Minutes Each Way - Weekdays & Sundays'. Early style, pink tinged glass measuring 4¼" x 3" x ¾", some minor scratches and loss to the gilding which is only to be expected for an item of such age, however, no chips or repairs. Note the Southern Belle became the Brighton Belle in 1934 so the paperweight certainly precedes. Coupé News No. 81 November Page 32 of 36

34 Stephen Middleton, the owner, kindly showed our group of six over the Car explaining his plans to restore the vehicle to join his Stately Trains formation. Being a very early car, imported as a kit from the USA, it has many features not seen on other Pullmans. cd.jones Stephen has already replaced the buffer beams and has started sourcing the necessary timbers to replace those that have rotted or been removed during its latter existence as part of a house in Seaford, East Sussex and then in the Works building at Preston Park which over the years has had many instances of trespass. Coupé News No. 81 November Page 34 of 36

35 cd.jones As mentioned in the last issue of Coupe News, Stephen has been able to obtain a bogie underframe on which the Car now rests, and being undercover allows work to continue over the forthcoming year or two. Coupé News No. 81 November Page 35 of 36

A very special vote of thanks to Doug Lindsay for his photographic contribution, for without your contributions Gentlemen this edition would have been much the poorer. Another mixed bag of contents for you within this month s edition. The North American tour of the Flying Scotsman has thrown some further and most interesting information, my thanks to ever growing number of detectives now involved in this investigation. Information is for Sharing and not Gathering Dust the word is spreading. It was also good to have positive news on car PEGASUS following the incident whilst in store at Eastleigh. Please keep an eye open for anyone trying to offer Pullman items on the cheap. Alas the car passed within 15 miles of my home on October 17 th, but a virus I have retained now for some three weeks, kept me from seeing her in full flight on the East Coast Mainline. Well we are only a few weeks away from that annual event, no not Christmas, I am referring to the Hornby 2010 Product Range News Release. What will 2010 bring for us Pullman modellers, we will have to wait and see. Let s hope the long awaited twelve wheel cars will appear before Christmas. My thanks to Model Zone for grasping the nettle and taking up the challenge to produce a one off model of car WREN in Departmental service. All the limited edition models produced have been sold. Finally my apologies for the size of this edition s attachment to your . I am reluctant to leave out articles and photographs that contributors forward to share with you.
