8 Anchor Boys Anchor Boys, as we are all aware, is about the boys having fun. We hosted three events over the year. The first was Primary 3 Afternoon at Stow Brae Kirk on 24th October This was based on an American theme, with boys enjoying a game of baseball, taking on the challenge of dancing, and making visors to keep out the sun or rain. As always everyone enjoyed the hot dogs and juice, and the afternoon was finished off with some campfire singing, with Bobby Stevenson providing the musical accompaniment on his banjo. A lot of happy boys and officers joined in the fun. Our second event was for Primary 2 Boys on the 20th February 2016 at the new venue of Martyrs' Sandyford Church, with an afternoon of activity based on Senses. At this event the boys learned new games, made musical instruments, and got involved in activity singing and active Bible stories, all washed down with juice and crisps. By the end of this fun-packed afternoon we had some very tired Primary 2 boys. Our final event of the year was our Anchor Boy Afternoon at Gleniffer High School on the 12th March 2016, where we took over the school for our Pirate-themed afternoon. Activities included a hunt for treasure on the artificial beach, before heading to the games hall for some active games and sticker collecting. There was a stop-off for some much needed refreshments in the social area, then it was off to the crafts area to make pirate hats, badges, miniature pirates and some traditional colouring-in. The afternoon was rounded off with colourful parachute games in the social area, which included Shark Attack - it was clear from the noise that the boys loved this game. Following our closing worship the boys were either collected by parents or for some the adventure continued, with their return journey back home on the buses provided by Southern Coaches. We must say a huge thank you to them for all their support and patience in assisting us each year. As you will see from the photographs once again Anchors Boys young and not so young had a great year with lots of FUN and happy faces. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the Anchors Boys Committee who have shown me so much support during this year. Thank you too to all the Officers of the Battalion for getting involved by bringing your boys along on the day, and to those who work hard at every event, either helping run games or just by being YOU. However we could not run the events above without the churches who support us by providing us with the use of their premises, so we send our thanks to the congregations of Martyrs' Sandyford Church and Stow Brae Kirk. We are already forward planning for next session, with our first event being P3 Afternoon at Martyrs' Sandyford Church on the 22nd October 2016, when we look forward to welcoming all boys and staff from companies who wish to take part in our American Afternoon. 10 Junior Section This session proved to be another busy year for Junior Section Activities Committee with seventeen sections taking part in at least one of the six Battalion events. After weather forced our original Football Cup to be abandoned, Team Games became our first event of the year. Nine sections participated in the competition at Martyrs Sandyford Church with 16th Paisley being crowned the winners. Ten Pin Bowling was held at SOAR, Braehead in December 2015 and proved to be as popular as ever! Overall ninety six boys from twelve sections enjoyed a night of bowling. With a slight hint of de ja vu the winners were 1st Bridge of Weir while 15th Paisley and 24th Paisley were second and third respectively for the second successive year. The Swimming Gala was held in Renfrew Baths, with twelve sections participating. Individual and relay races formed part of a successful evening with 24th Paisley being crowned swimming champions for the third year in a row! Figure marching was once again a closely fought competition, with eight Companies represented. It was great to see more Companies attending this event and I was impressed with the support of the boys parents. It was so great that there was not a spare chair to be had in Sherwood Greenlaw with parents even seated on the stage. Winners on the day were 1st Bridge of Weir, with 1st Houston 1st Erskine second and third respectively. Our thanks go to our judges from 1st Gourock for giving up their time to assist with this event After a long search to secure a new venue we held our final event of the year at Five on 5, in Paisley. The football cup provided an excellent set of fixtures featuring 12 teams from 10 Companies. 15th Paisley secured first place after winning 2-1 over 1st Houston in the final. 3rd place went to 1st Bridge of Weir after a tense penalty shootout with 1st/3rd Renfrew The Battalion Championship this year was closely contested and was won by 1st Bridge of Weir. This session has been another busy year for Junior Section Activities Committee. I would like to thank all those who have played a part in making the events happen and in particular Stuart Willbond, Craig McLean, Susan Wylie, Colin Hainey, Georgy Rae and David Love for their support and assistance throughout the year. Our annual fun day will take place in April this year where hopefully a good turnout of boys will enjoy this year s range of activities David Ashton Interim Convener The Annual Sports Day saw an impressive 12 sections participate in the flat race, hurdles, long jump, welly throw and relay. The winner on the day were 24th Paisley for the second year in a row. 12 Company Section Activities The Company Section Activities Committee planned a full year of competitions as part of the Championship which consisted of 20 competitions covering 11 different activities. Fifteen companies of the Battalion participated in at least one of these events the largest we have managed for a number of years. The competitions are selected to promote the Object of the Boys Brigade within our Battalion. The Boys who represented each Company were a credit to their Companies in the way that they applied themselves to the disciplines of each event. The activities range from traditional Boys Brigade events of Drill, Christian Faith, Physical Education and First Aid and covers the sports of Volleyball, Football, Cross Country, Swimming and Badminton, with a General Quiz being the opening event of the year. We introduced a new event Ten Pin Bowling which attracted entries from 10 Companies. On the night 53 Boys participated in the Event at Bowplex within Intu Soar Braehead. This was great success and it has been agreed that this will be repeated in next sessions Championship. Recruit Games was not included within the Championship this year as we revised the format to allow Junior Section Boys in Primary six to take part hoping that this could be used by Companies as an introduction event for next year s recruits. The Boys who took part had a great afternoon of fun and we are hoping to continue this format in future years. The Championship could not be run without the assistance given by many both from BB Staff to others from outside agencies. I would like to take this opportunity to thank some of these individuals and groups. We must first thank our main sponsor Intu Braehead Shopping Centre for their continued support of the Battalion. The Cross Country event was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances however we hope to run this next year again at Woodneuk Farm Barrhead owned by a long supporter of the Battalion Tommy Thomson. The Swimming Gala was held at Renfrew Swimming Pool, which has shown to be another great venue with the spectators getting up close to the action and with the boys at the side of the pool it all adds to the atmosphere. The evening, which is a joint event with the Junior Section Committee was again sponsored by Providing for the People of Paisley and the medals funded by Lodge Houston St Johnstone. Mr Jim Wilson from Lodge Houston St Johnstone presented the winners awards on the night. Our thanks also go to Mrs Sophia Murphy who instructed the officers who acted as swimming officials guiding them in their duties to make the night run smoothly. We also acknowledge the work of the staff from Renfrew Swimming Pool who ensured the safety of the Boys and we are indebted to them for this. The First Aid event was judged by Red Cross staff and led by Ann Brogan who was assisted by Angus Weir, Jeanette Cossar and Jack Houlison. The Battalion are honoured to have the Red Cross as an Ambassador, supporting us in teaching this life-saving skill to the boys. The P.E. competition was hosted by Neilston Parish Church in their halls. The event was again judged by local High School PE teacher and ex member of 1st Kilbarchan Mr Dougie Gillespie who was highly impressed by the quality of the skills on display and has offered his services for next year. This year we were able to secure accommodation for our main sports activities of Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball and Five-a-Side Football, at premises run by Renfrewshire Leisure at their Linwood Sport Centre. The staff were very amenable to all of our requests. Thanks also to Glasgow Battalion for supplying staff to judge our Drill Competitions, in particular Jim McVean Battalion Secretary, Steve Crompton and Alan Murray both of 25th Glasgow Company. As always the Battalion are indebted to our Companies Kirk Sessions by allowing us to use the church halls for many of our championship venues. Without this assistance we would not be able to have such a varied list of events. I would like to express my thanks to Erskine Parish Church (Drill), Renfrew North Parish (Quiz, Recruit Games, & Committee meetings), Neilston Parish Church (P.E.) and Paisley Stow Brae Kirk (First Aid). We could not do it without your help. I would also like to thank the officers of the Battalion who helped in any way from time keeping, refereeing, or even just bringing your team to the event. Without this help we could not run the championship. The committee is always looking for ways to improve the organisation of events. If you can help in any way please contact me or come along to any of our committee meetings. Hugh Young Company Section Activities Convenor 8

Unfortunately the Battalion Church Parade to Stow Brae Kirk had to be cancelled at short notice due to unforeseen structural work having to be undertaken on the Building. I apologise for this but it was too late to make alternative arrangements My thanks to the members of the Committee for their continued support. Rev. Gordon Armstrong Service for Others Although Companies and the Battalion spent a great deal of time raising funds to maintain our organisation, it is pleasing to note that our member Companies have also been working hard to support other good causes. 18 Duke of Edinburgh Award The various sections of the D of E Award Scheme are supported within the Battalion by the participating Companies in different ways, with the Expedition section probably being the hardest to fulfil. There are several reasons for this e.g. lack of qualified leaders, insufficient numbers of participants at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, lack of expedition equipment, the huge amount of time and preparation required to train for and carry out expeditions over many weeks. It is clear that the D of E Award Scheme is still held in high regard within the B.B, although the delivery of it at times may appear to be disjointed. Instead of the B.B. being the main Operating Authority for the Award, it is often now playing a supporting role to the local schools e.g. by providing participating B.B. members with the opportunity to fulfil requirements for the Volunteering Section through Company service. With that in mind, an open meeting was held in November 2015 with a general invite to all interested parties to attend and drive the Award scheme forward. Six companies were represented at that meeting compared to the five who expressed an interest in last year's D of E Award Scheme survey. It was decided to encourage young leaders from the interested companies to attend the Annual Expedition Leadership Course at Carronvale (normally held in May) to try and increase the number of leaders with suitable competence - this is an ongoing exercise. In order to support the existing participating Companies, a check sheet was produced to help the leaders comply with all the necessary paperwork required by both B.B. and D of E. D of E Scotland has amended its Wild Country procedure, with all paperwork now going to Eleanor Birch (Scottish Expedition Network Co-ordinator, based in Edinburgh) for approval, rather than local area advisors.the Boys Brigade D of E Convener and Advisory Group are happy to provide support to Companies within the Battalion who are interested in joining the Award Scheme, as well as to those who are already participating. Douglas Cunningham D of E Convener Duke of Edinburgh Award Recipients Bronze 1st Erskine Fraser McKenzie Shaun Noble Thomas Rough Lee Rush Silver 1st Erskine Scott Maxwell Liam Oldrey Kyle Seaton 1st Houston Gavin Hemphill James Webb Gold 1st Houston David Hill Charlie Wighton Property Committee Anyone who has visited the Paisley BB Headquarters this year will have noticed differences outside and in the building. There are prominent and smart Boys Brigade signs to the front and back, new outside lights come on when needed and the building is newly painted in blue and white. Less obviously weeds have been removed and the outside has been tidied up. Inside a new suspended ceiling and lighting have greatly improved insulation and deadened the noise of rain on the roof. A few other minor jobs are finished but much is still to be done. All health and safety matters in respect of water supply, asbestos in the building, electric wiring and electrical appliances have been approved. Everything has a clean bill of health and in addition the building has new fire extinguishers. On 12 February this year local authority consent was obtained for work as drawn and specified by the architect Jim Allan. The approved work includes two new toilets (one DDA compliant), new kitchen, reconfigured office with two front windows, new shop layout and new entrance door with wheelchair ramp access. This work is to be completed within three years of 12 February 2016 but it can be undertaken in stages as finance becomes available. Contractors have been invited to tender for the work as proposed. Total expenditure on the Headquarters in the last twelve months including architects and local authority fees is 13, Paul Birch Property Convenor. Development Committee From a Development perspective, the focus during the course of this session has been on contributing to a national review of the programme and awards for the Anchors and Juniors. The Programme Review Group - consisting of representatives from Scotland, England and Northern Ireland has been asked by the Brigade Executive to look at how the current programmes and award structures can be improved so that they both complement the existing structures while also ensuring that they remain relevant to today s members. A similar programme review is about to begin for the Company and Senior section programmes and awards. If you have any thoughts or comments about the current programmes or badges please contact me through Battalion HQ. Company visits by Executive Members, Reserve Officers and Company Captains were undertaken during the current session and much important information has been gathered. These visits are hugely important as they provide a direct link between the Executive and the Boys and Officers who make up the Battalion. This is the opportunity to pass to your Company visitor any thoughts, comments or concerns about how the Battalion operates. This ensures The Battalion continues to move forward and improve from the information provided. Companies can also contact me direct with any suggestions. Finally my thanks to all the visitors for the work they undertake on behalf of the Development Committee in addition to the other tasks they undertake within the Battalion Andrew Dinnett Development Convener 14

19 Fund Raising Committee Shortly the Fund Raising Committee will be known as The Financial Support Committee. It is considered to be a better name and will come into effect once all constitutional requirements have been met. Why the change? it is simply that our purpose is to SUPPORT all sections and members of every Company by providing fun and challenging activities for our members and which attract new recruits. It is also our objective to eventually do away with the per capita contributions which are currently payable by each of our members but we require to raise sufficient funds for this to happen. We continue to acknowledge the generosity of our Ambassadors representatives from industrial and commercial groups along with the individuals who contribute finance on a regular basis. Without them we would be struggling. The Ambassadors donated the total sum of 12,764 over the year. At the moment we are embarked on a major reorganisation of our HQ building and approaches have been made to a number of potential donors for help with the considerable costs. The Buy a Brick Campaign is now underway which on its launch day on 27th. February raised the sum of 1000 (page 11). With this encouragement we now broaden our approach by commending this appeal to our companies, churches, ex-members and general supporters to enable us to achieve our object: which is the advancement of Christ s Kingdom amongst Boys. 21 Training Throughout 2015/16 the committee successfully delivered: - Queen s Badge Candidates Meeting, Youth Leader Training, Skills for Queen s Badge, President s Badge Building Your Skills (2 x Courses) and a Queen s Badge Completion Course. My sincere thanks to Sherwood Greenlaw Church for again providing the use of their halls and facilities. We have conducted a detailed review of the Building Your Skills course and will implement the re-vamped course during 2016/17. We successfully encouraged younger officers to get involved in training with two KGVI graduates joining in the delivery of both the Skills for Queen s Badge and Building Your Skills courses Thank you Gavin & Fraser. We supported BB national training with three P&D trainers presenting Youth Leader Training to new officers in Oban & Lochgilphead and two P&D trainers participating in the prestigious week-long King George VI (KGVI) officer Cadet courses at Carronvale. In February 2016, four young people from our battalion, graduated from The Boys Brigade s (BB) flagship King George VI Youth Leadership Training (KGVI) course: - Kalesha Mayne 8th Paisley, Fraser Digney 3rd Johnstone, Jack Mitchell 1st Elderslie and Nathan Orr 1st Erskine were presented with their certificates by the Very Reverend Andrew McLellan, Brigade National Chaplain and former Moderator of the Church of Scotland, at a special graduation ceremony at Kirkton Parish Church. Our Queen s Badge Completion Course, in March 2016, was the highlight of our training year with 30 young men from 2nd Barrhead, 1st Bishopton, 1st Erskine, 1st Houston, 1st Johnstone, 3rd Johnstone, 10th Leith, 14th Paisley, 15th Paisley, 16th Paisley, 24th Paisley, 1st Neilston & 1st/3rd Renfrew successfully completing the course after enthusiastically overcoming the stretching challenges over the two days.finally, my thanks to the members of the Training Committee for their continued support, commitment and flexibility in advancing the BB mission through training. 23 Other Convenors Reports Public Relations and Resource Committee This past year Recruitment leaflets were distributed to all Primary schools in Paisley within the jurisdiction of Renfrewshire Council. Plans are in hand to extend this next session to schools outwith the Paisley Area. I would like to thank the local press for the coverage of Battalion Events and to those who support the Battalion through advertising in the Annual Report thereby keeping the cost to a reasonable level. Moira Bryan continues to do an excellent job in editing Update, the Battalion's newsheet. Last year we had the Christmas Card design competition which was a great success. It has been agreed that this will be undertaken again next session. Finally a word of thanks to my committee members whose hard work is often unseen, to Grant Mather for his photographic skills and to those Companies who have submitted photographs not all of which could be included in this report. Supplies John Stewart P and R Committee Convenor Sales in 2015 amounted to which represents a fall of about 6000 over The cause of the fall is not clear, although it may be due to more recycling of uniform as Boys grow. We hope that in future years we can take account of the changes we have experienced. It is hoped that we can continue to provide a good level of service for Companies and Boys. Finance The draft accounts for year ended 31 December 2015 show that we have incurred a deficit of around 4,000 (last year a surplus of 2,000 after a transfer to our Building Fund of 4,000) The accounts continue to be prepared under SORP Regulations. The result is not as bad as it seems as we have incurred substantial repairs and renovations to our Headquarters.(Reported elsewhere in this Report) This year there was a reduction in our income from Donations/Ambassadors. It is still a substantial figure and our thanks must go to all involved.this together with a slight reduction in supplies income and company subscriptions has resulted in the deficit. Our other expenditure has been held at previous levels. Abstract of Accounts INCOME EXPENDITURE Subscriptions 7,000 Headquarters 11,000 Donations/ Ambassadors 14,000 Salaries 7,000 Supplies 3,000 Events 1,000 Overheads 7,000 Deficit 4,000 Depreciation 2, ,000 28,000 I am grateful to all who have contributed to our finances during the year especially our Ambassadors. Thanks are also due to Alan and his team of volunteers in supplies.i also record my thanks to the Finance Committee,Financial Support Committee and our examiners Armstrongs Jim Auchincloss Battalion Treasurer We have kept the same helpers in as last year and we continue to be grateful for their help. There is still no clear information on changes to award regulations or when they will occur. Alan Taylor Supplies 19
