2 Welcome Welcome to our first edition of Explore with The National Trust for Jersey, our new publication which is packed full of information about the Trust and the events taking place throughout the year. Whether you are a visitor to our shores, a member of The National Trust or simply looking for an exciting place to visit, then hopefully we can inspire you to explore and discover some of Jersey s rich heritage, stunning wildlife and beautiful countryside. From narrow tree lined country lanes and historic granite farmsteads to the windswept rugged coastline of the north, resplendent with the recently re-introduced Choughs, our exciting range of events are tailored to give you a flavour of what makes Jersey such a special place. Personally I am particularly looking forward to some of our guided walks including the Dawn Chorus in May (where I will be busy serving hot chocolate) at 5.30 in the morning in one of Jersey s most beautiful private gardens, as well as Foreshore Foraging on our RAMSAR designated coastline where there will be the opportunity to test your speed of hand by catching a Razor fish. If you are inspired by our activities and would like to get more involved do take a look at our volunteering opportunities on Page 18. Alternatively if you live in Jersey please do consider becoming a member to help us to look after your Island home. Visitors can also help us by taking up residence in our self-catering accommodation just by the beach at Grève de Lecq. Trust me the challenges of caring for 20 historic buildings and over 2% of the Island for the benefit of Jersey is no easy task as illustrated by the immense amount of funds required to make our vision for Morel Farm a reality. Your support is truly needed. Finally, I really do hope that our range of activities and events will help you to discover your own special place to explore and enjoy in Jersey. We are indeed privileged to have such a wealth of natural beauty and built heritage and I very much look forward to sharing this with you at one or two of our events. 3 Come and stay with us HISTORIC VENUES Le Câtel Fort History greets you at every turn in this 18th century guardhouse, situated high on the eastern cliffs that dominate Grève de Lecq Bay Surrounded by stunning views and a refreshing sea breeze, this site is an ideal base for beach activities, exploring Grève de Lecq Bay, or just relaxing around a BBQ with friends and family. Holiday COTTage Grève de Lecq Barracks Although it was initially built to protect the Island from invasion, it has now become the perfect spot for a peaceful and tranquil break. With a grassy front lawn, stunning views and a beautiful heritage building to enjoy, La Câtel Fort is a picture perfect location to enjoy a short break with friends and family. Grève de Lecq, St Mary The Officers Quarters offer a unique opportunity to experience living in a 19th century barracks situated on Jersey s beautiful North coast Located at Grève de Lecq, the accommodation has a sea view and is within 2 minutes walking distance of a golden sandy beach, stunning north coastal walks, and a number of local pubs and excellent beach cafés. Handsomely refurbished by The National Trust for Jersey in 2000, this high quality, centrally heated accommodation has been carefully created within the Officers Quarters, whilst still retaining the historic fabric, including features such as the original fireplaces. There is spacious and modern accommodation for up to six people. During the summer season, the rest of the Barracks is open to the public, with special events being held on a very occasional basis during the evening. Weekly hire fees range from 788 up to 1,297 during peak season. Children are very welcome, but unfortunately no pets are allowed. For further details please call Macole s or Freedom Holidays The Officers Quarters Grève de Lecq Beach HISTORIC VENUES Le Don Hilton Known colloquially as the white house due to its distinctive whitewashed exterior, this 18th century building was used as a Powder Magazine up until the end of the Napoleonic wars After the wars, with no further need to defend the Island, the property was converted into a simple cottage. The facilities at Le Don Hilton are basic and essentially this building is a stone tent, solely offering protection from the elements. Despite the simplicity of this accommodation the location of the building, as well as its attractive and quirky facade, makes it a superb and exciting place to stay for a few days. St Ouen s Bay 4 5

10 Get involved... We have lots of new, exciting indoor and outdoor volunteer roles this year, so why not come along and help us to share our passion for this beautiful Island? Learn new skills, make friends, try out different activities and discover something new. You could be part of a team of National Trust Conservation Volunteers, working across the Island on projects such as gorse management, creating wildlife ponds or thrashing, bashing, cutting and raking to improve Jersey s environment. If you would like to help our event organiser then we have a full programme throughout the year from music to food events and community to fundraising. If you enjoy walking with a purpose, then come and join our volunteer shepherd programme, who walk the north coast from Sorel to Devil s Hole spotting our Manx Loaghtan sheep to make sure they are safe and well. Or if you are interested in doing something indoors we need new volunteers to work at our properties, Le Moulin de Quétivel or 16 New Street. We would love more volunteers to work in the shop or as a room guide. WE COULD NOT DO WHAT WE DO WITHOUT YOU. 18 If you enjoy volunteering, have good communication skills and would like to join our friendly team for a few days or a few hours a month then please get in touch ask for Karen Evans Karen@nationaltrust.je Conservation Volunteers National Trust Rangers Meet a Volunteer We have lots of long-term volunteers helping us with all kinds of areas at the Trust, from office duties to events or countryside volunteers to working at one of our properties. Kevin has been working with us as a volunteer for the past 10 years. What made you get involved with the Trust? I was on a project with the Conservation Volunteers when I met Ian Davis who was looking for helpers for the Walled Garden. Ian was tasked by the Trust to clear one half of the garden for vegetable growing and making the raised growing beds. Kevin Pinglaux What is the best bit about being a volunteer in the walled garden? The best part of being a volunteer in the walled garden is that I get to plan what grows in the garden, do the ordering, plant and see the results. It is also enjoyable to work with other volunteers and be outside in the fresh air. Bonnie has been working with us as a volunteer at The Elms office and events for the past 4 years. What does it mean to be a long-term volunteer? Friendships I have made and the lovely people I have met whilst doing events. What projects have you worked on? Black Butter both on the day and also the evening, when all the peeling is being done I help with the food, Sunset Concerts, the Mill and at the town house, 16 New Street and others. Bonnie Butel Valuable work experience With youth unemployment standing at an all time high, (40% registered as unemployed in Jersey are under 25) these are challenging times for young people. Volunteering is one way of gaining valuable work experience. I contacted The National Trust to see if I could help out with anything whilst looking for work and it was the best choice I made. I got involved with the Love Plémont campaign and, instead of sitting at home getting depressed, I was getting involved in a wide range of things from tweeting Nerina Pallot, dressing up as a puffin and talking on the radio, whilst gaining support for the campaign. It was extremely worthwhile as I was kept busy, met some great people and have added a whole range of skills to my cv. It is something I would highly recommend whilst unemployed but also just as something to do in your spare time, even if you are in work. Lisa Mansell 19

All this vital work is costly, amounting to just under 2,500 per day. We receive no government funding and so we need your help and support to continue to protect your Island. During 2013 we are hoping to raise funds to renovate and refurbish one of our most treasured properties, Morel Farm. Gifted to us in 1939 by Mr A Morel, parts of the farm date from the C17 and it retains much of its historic integrity with a cobbled farmyard, pressoir, boulangerie, pig sties and the main farmhouse. However, the property needs considerable repair and refurbishment including complete new services, damp proofing, structural strengthening, decorating plus a new kitchen and bathrooms. Once the essential repair works have been completed our vision for Morel Farm is for it to remain as a small holding. It will also be used as a farm bed and breakfast with visitor accommodation both within the main house and the boulangerie. Already the project has generated much interest with our Patron HRH The Prince of Wales indicating that he would like to visit the farm once the project is completed. The pressure is on! As ever thank you for your support. The renovation and refurbishment costs have been estimated at 955,000. You can help us to realise our vision and safeguard this special farm by making a donation to the Morel Farm Appeal by going to and click on donate in the top menu. 21
