From Street Parties to Home Zones Adrian Sinclair Creative Director Heads Together Productions Tokyo 30th July 2012 Community Design Partners for Children s Safety
Heads Together uses the arts to inspire a creative vision in individuals and communities. We aim to improve both potential and achievement. The key to our work is to bring creativity to the centre: at the heart of life in the neighbourhood or into the core of the school's curriculum...to achieve 'creativity with purpose'. For more information
Over 25 years of working, there are three main themes that appear in all our programmes of work: Identities Democratic Participation Communication
The Space Between Third Space theory in education suggests that learning is most effective in the space between School and Community. We believe that learning is always more interesting in the space between institutions or between communities or between generations. Often our work involves creating a space between The interesting place
Welcome to the Methleys
Key issues for the neighbourhood Crime and the fear of crime The first Methleys public meeting Road Safety Play space The environment including dogs & pigeons Facilities The Methleys Neighbourhood Millennium Plan (pub 1995)
On the Streets 1995: Consultation As part of the On the Streets community planning weekend in the summer of 1995, all residents were asked to complete a Street Improvement Questionnaire in order to canvas their views. Two questionnaires were produced - one a Street Quiz aimed at children. Eighty two forms were completed and returned. Apart from the tick boxes there were a wide variety of suggestions and comments. The one issue where there was almost unanimous agreement was to improve play provision. And the most interesting answers came from the children... Eddy Walker (architect)
The children ask the question: Why not? Play Areas To the question Would you like the Methleys to have a special play area? the answer was Yes - 100% of responses. Where should it be? The most popular response was in or near the school with the lower playground mentioned as a possibility Zermatt Street, School Lane, Kwik Save, the grass near the flats and Potternewton Gardens (near the yellow bricks) were all suggested Many of the younger children suggested Outside my house, In my street or In all the streets and SOMEWHERE SOFT! Eddy Walker our architect suggested that what they meant was something that had been created in other parts of Europe: in Holland woonerf (a living street) There was a campaign starting in England to create similar Home Zones but only a few people were talking about them
A little bit of creativity with purpose
Children don t play on the streets any more

A space between shared by all
A space for all ages to play
A space to relax
Methley Terrace is famous now It looked like a pathway to heaven The Guardian What a shame, then, that no planning department had anything to do with the event Planning Week Editorial We want to reclaim our communities for children and that is exactly what they are doing in the Methleys Fabian Hamilton MP in the House of Commons
I m happy because we could be making history Harry aged 8 On December 2nd 1998, 12 children from the Methleys travelled down to the House of Commons in London to speak in front of MPs at the launch of the national Home Zones Initiative Within two years, the government announced a pilot scheme of 9 Home Zones. The Methleys was one of them. This was to be followed with a commitment of 60 million to create more Home Zones across the country
Planning for change in the Methleys
Let us plant it ourselves
Public art in the neighbourhood
A new look for the Methleys
After
Before

Achievements Imagined, designed and created a Home Zone in the Methleys Changed government policy and investment practices Led by young people Inspired other communities across the country
2012: Ten years of being a Home Zone Has it made any difference? The children have grown The trees have grown... The people are still On the Streets
On the Streets: 2012
Rita who started it all off in Back in the Methleys in 2012 celebrating the 10th anniversary and her own 50th birthday...
The Methleys Creativity with Purpose Identities Communication Democratic Participation And what did we learn? That a street is really the space between the houses What safety really means
Having people on the streets is the best thing to guarantee safety Otherwise the car has won
