3 PART A. Lay the Foundation GOALS of project write in your notebook 1. Identify Kinetic Energy and Potential Energy and apply them in physical laws 2. Understand the Law of Conservation of Energy 3. Design and construct a roller coaster track and test it using the given criteria and constraints.

8 Part E: The Fahrenheit You are now going to watch a video that will allow you to experience the Fahrenheit ride from Hershey Park in Pennsylvania. This ride has the largest angle of descent. That means that when you go over the first hill, you go down an angle that is over 90 degrees straight down. It s angle is 97 degrees (see the diagram on the right). WATCH THE VIDEO here or Google Fahrenheit Hershey Park and find a POV video to watch. 97 degrees When you are done watching click to the next slide. Where would you rate it? Draw a chart and use the guide on the next slide to rate this ride!

10 Part F: DIY Coaster Your group is now ready for your Challenge: To design a roller coaster track and test it using the given criteria and constraints. Step 1: Read the criteria and constraints Step 2: Each team member will brainstorm (in your notebook), then share ideas and decide on final prototype Step 3: Build and try to meet the Challenge.

11 Part F: DIY Coaster (Continued) Problem: Design and build a roller coaster that will meet the criteria and constraints in a thrilling, but safe manner. Criteria and Constraints: Can only use given materials (cannot cut track) Must have hill, curve, and a loop Must be built on given surface or floor Ride must last between 2-3 seconds ONLY Marble must stay on track from start to finish Materials: 3 Pipe Insulation foam pieces Tape Scissors Marble for testing Materials for support Timer Popsicle stick for Marble release system

12 Part F: DIY Coaster ADVANCE CHALLENGE! Add a Jump to the roller coaster! The Marble must safely land in the cup without knocking the cup over and must cover a span of 5 cm.

13 Part G: Assessment!! In your notebook, write a summary paragraph that includes: a description of the roller coaster challenge (what to do, some materials used) the problems you faced/overcame to build the coaster tell whether or not you met the goal (and how, if appropriate) describe what you could have tried to improve the coaster/ made building it easier name where the kinetic and potential energies where the highest and lowest (include a rough sketch of design with labels)
