11 It All Started With Casey By Daniel L. Cutcher When Casey Fredericks was hired as wrestling coach at The Ohio State University in the early 1930 s, only 4 schools outside of Cleveland had wrestling programs. These included Upper Arlington, Worthington, Bridgeport and Shadyside. He quickly realized the need to develop the sport from the ground up, so he enlisted help from many sources, including professional wrestling promoters, the OHSAA and local high schools, talking to football coaches, principals and parents groups. Casey constantly put on demonstrations, often loaning mats and other gear. It quickly became apparent there was a need for a professional crew of people to make sure everyone played fair but at the time there were no rules. Everyone had different ideas of what scoring was. Most meets were officiated by the coaches. Casey turned to his assistant coach, A.J. Tony Montonaro, to help with this task. Tony began to travel throughout Ohio with his developed notebook of rules and taught these rules and mechanics to official groups. In 1965 the NCAA (college) and NFHS (high school) national associations decided it was time to have one set of rules. They invited Tony to Chicago for a meeting and used his notebook as the basis for the first national rulebook in In the early 70 s Tony retired and Vince Matteucci and Stamatis Bulgaris replaced him. Stamatis went back to coaching in the late 70 s and Lyle Smith took over as rules interpreter. Vince retired in 2011 and Lyle followed in 2013, leaving Dick Loewenstine, Ray Anthony, and Jim Vreeland to carry on the task of developing officials and promoting consistency throughout the state.
