He was a salvage contractor and also president and co-founder of the second oldest halfway house for men in the U.S. For over ten years Jim worked tirelessly for our regionals and all the other tournaments that we enjoyed in Hawaii. He was a president of the Honolulu Unit, the Hospitality Chair of the 1983 Hawaii Nationals, and appointed to the National Goodwill Committee. HCBUA dedicated the 1989 regional tournament to Jim s memory after his brave struggle with cancer. He was honored by District 20, who designated him Member of the Year for 1989, stating that Jim exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism, good will, and diligence that makes the ACBL system work. Bridge players will forever be indebted to Jim for his many contributions to bridge in Hawaii. This prominent national cemetery is the final resting place for about 48,300 members of the armed forces. Medal of Honor recipients and other notable heroes buried here include Jim Hopkins, Ellison Onizuka, Hawaii s first astronaut, and Stanley Dunham, World War II veteran, bridge player, and President Obama s grandfather. The engraved names of 18, 094 World War II heroes missing in action are honored in ten Courts of the Missing that flank the monumental staircase. Over five million visitors come annually to pay their respects and to see a panoramic view of Honolulu.

Dan McGuire, Las Vegas, NV, Bridge Bulletin, August 2008, p. 8 Í Scientists have found that certain mind exercises, such as counting and matching games, could improve memory. Staying engaged in a wide range of activities, including social and physical activities can help improve your memory and mental health. Island Scene, Summer 2008, p. 43

If a country has paper, its people have playing cards. What card is known as The Suicide King? Early versions of the king of hearts showed the king wielding an axe. Due to poor copying by the blockmakers, the axe lost its head over the years, and the shaft was turned into a sword which appears to be driven into his head. Why has the seven of diamonds been called the "beer card"? Supposedly if you win the 13th trick with it in a contract you make or beat, you win a beer from your partner! What card is known as the "Curse of Scotland" and why? This term is applied to the nine of diamonds. Various explanations are given, none completely authoritative. The Bridge Magazine once listed six possible origins for the term from ACBL s The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge, 5th edition, as follows: 1) In the once popular round game 'Pope Joan', the nine of diamonds was called the Pope, the antichrist of Scottish Reformers. 2) It was the chief card in the game 'cornette', introduced into Scotland by the unhappy Queen Mary. 3) 'Butcher' Cumberland wrote the orders for the Balle of Culloden, 1746, on the back of the card. (This is very doubtful.) 4) The order for the Massacre of Glencoe (1692) was signed on the back of this card. 5) That the dispositions for the fatal field of Flodden (1513) were drawn up on it by James IV of Scotland. (Both these last have only the slightest authority.) 6)!t is derived from the nine lozenges that formed the arms of the Earl of Stair, who was especially loathed for his connection with the Massacre of Glencoe and the union with England (1707). The four of clubs is known as The Devil s Bedposts, especially in poker. The jack of clubs is sometimes known as Pam, from the game of the same name in which it is the high trump. The queen of spades is known as the black Maria (from the game of the same name). You can stir up a little controversy by telling anybody who'll listen that the jacks in a deck of cards altogether have 12 eyes. Did you ever notice? The king of hearts is the only king without a mustache. And only one of the kings doesn't hold a sword. (The king of diamonds holds an ax.) Each king in a deck of cards represents a great king from history: spades - King David, hearts - Charlemagne, clubs - Alexander the Great, and diamonds - Julius Caesar. Hearts and diamonds on cards used aboard U.S. submarines during World War II were printed in black. Couldn't use red - it was invisible in the interior red lighting of the subs! Which queens in a deck of cards are holding flowers? Somebody should say, "All of them." To the early French, the four suits in playing cards symbolized the four classes of society: hearts for the church, spear points (spades) for the military, diamond-shaped tiles for the merchants, and cloverleaves (clubs) for the peasants. The order of importance suggested the military overpowered the church, the church subdued the merchants, and the merchants dominated the peasants.
