1 HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS - WASHINGTON STATE TRACK AND FIELD (through 2014) by Rod Wilcox King s H.S. Since 1924 Washington State has held Track and Field state championships. There have been many variations to the meet but other than 1943 when no meet was held, at least one team state champion has been crowned yearly. For 39 years there was only one classification for the entire state saw a big school and small school separation (1A, 2A) further split the classifications to three (1A, 2A, 3A) again expanded to four (B, 1A, 2A, 3A) expanded to five (B, 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A) and 2007 jumped to six classifications (1B, 2B, 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A). The scoring system has also evolved. The original scoring system was likely a top 5, as the team champion scored 26 points and won four events. In the 60 s the scores increased but it is not obvious how the scoring system was changed. In the 70 s the present top eight scoring system was likely implemented as team champions scored over 60 at times. The number of events has grown from 14 events to the present 17 (18 for girls). The one event that has been dropped is the 50 yard dash and the 220 yard low hurdles have evolved to the 300 meter intermediate hurdles. Meanwhile the 3200 meter run and the triple jump have been added. The first state meet ran only one relay; the 880 yard relay. It has evolved into the present 400 and 1600 meter relays with the addition of the 800 meter relay for girls. Of course all running events have been converted from yards to metric the first girl s state meet was held with limited events. The 3200 meter run, 1600 meter relay, triple jump and pole vault were eventually added. Points scored at state meets are a means of comparing success of track teams over time.
