1 LAKELAND'S BRAD STAINSBY FLORIDA STATE JUNIOR CHAMPION July 1, 1997 CELEBRATION CITY, Fla. Brad Stainsby of Lakeland shot a 72 in the final round of the 42nd annual Florida State Junior Golf Championship at Celebration Golf Club to claim the junior amateur title. Nick Rousey of Pensacola finished a stroke back for second, while Matt Nelan of Eustis shot a final-round 68 to finish two strokes back in third place. Miami's James Vargas claimed the year-old title at Disney's Magnolia course with scores of for a 143 total. He defeated Ty Tryon of Windermere by three strokes. After opening with a 69, Stainsby played consistent in the final round to shoot par. Rousey, along with Ponte Vedra Beach's Robbie Ulerick, both dropped after their first day 69's. Rousey was fourunder for the tournament after 27 holes, but faltered when Stainsby birdied the 10th and 11th holes to draw even. Rousey had a chance to send it into a playoff, but he slid a three-foot birdie putt on the 18th to the left. Ponte Vedra Beach's Robbie Ulerick, Pensacola's Nick Rousey and Lakeland's Brad Stainsby shot three-under 69's to lead after the first round of the 42nd annual Florida State Junior Golf Championship at Celebration Golf Club. Palmetto's Justin Hoagland is one stroke back with a 70. Miami's James Vargas leads the years old after a three-under 69 today at Lake Buena Vista Golf Club. Pace's Dan Boda is in second after posting a 71. The final round begins tomorrow for both divisions.
