4 METROPOLITAN ECONOMIES AND GROSS METRO PRODUCT U.S. metropolitan areas are the engines of domestic output and titans of the global economy. The combined annual gross product of the 10 largest metro areas is greater than the combined GDP of our 36 least-producing states. The colossal economies of New York and Los Angeles both produce more than 46 of our states surpassed only by Florida, Texas, California and New York. Our metro economies are equally imposing on an international level: New York, Los Angeles and Chicago the three largest - produce more annually than countries such as Sweden, Norway, Poland, Belgium, Argentina and Taiwan. New York ranks as the 13 th largest economy in the world, ahead of Spain, Mexico and South Korea, which all have GDPs in excess of $1 trillion. Houston ranks 30 th and Dallas 32 nd, while Philadelphia, San Francisco and Boston are 40 th, 41 st and 42 nd. Simply put, of the 100 largest economies in the world, 36 of them belong to metropolitan areas of the United States. In 2012, total real gross metropolitan product, ("GMP"), grew by 2.5%, expanding in 290 metros, up from 265 in The metropolitan areas of the Midwest comprised almost half of the 10 fastest growing metros; Elkhart-Goshen, IN; Columbus, IN; Kokomo, IN; and St. Joseph, MO, each saw GMP increase by more than 7%. This area of the Midwest is reaping the benefits of a rebounding manufacturing industry, particularly automakers new car registration increased 13.1% to over 14 million in 2012, the highest level observed since The perpetually booming state of Texas was also well represented on the top ten list; Midland finished first (14.4% growth), and Odessa (14.1%) and Victoria (8.7%) rounded out the top ten, and Austin (6.5%) was ranked 11 th. Texas was fueled by the surging energy markets the average daily oil production in Texas skyrocketed 37.1%. IHS anticipates the nation's real GDP will expand by 1.7% in 2013, while the GMP growth of our 363 metros will be slightly less at 1.6% as 244 of the metro areas see positive real GMP growth. Energy will continue to fuel economic gains, and the metros of Texas will again top the list of fastest growers; this year they will be joined by Fargo and Bismarck, ND both of which are benefitting from booming growth around the Bakken Shale play. Those metros will both see real GMP growth above 5%. Metros in the housing bubble states of California, Arizona, and Florida will comprise 9 of the top 50 fastest growers in particular, San Francisco and San Jose, CA and Tampa, Jacksonville, and Sebastian, FL will all see output jump by more than 3% this year. Amongst our largest metros, New York and Los Angeles will see real GMP increase by more than $23.5 billion (2%) and $15.1 billion (2.3%) while Chicago will see a jump of $6.3 billion (1.3%). Overall, 68 metros will grow by more than 2%, and 161 will increase their output by 1% or more. However, 93 metropolitan areas will see growth of 1% or less and another 119 are on pace to see real gross metro product plateau or decline. Metropolitan areas play a critical role in our nation s economy and ongoing recovery. In 2012, 92.3% of the jobs added, 89.2% of growth in in real GDP, and virtually all of our nation s population gains occurred in metro areas. In 2013, the nation s metropolitan areas will contain 86% of total U.S. non-farm employment, 90% of real GDP and 85.7% of our country s population. The impact of sequestration, the federal shutdown, and tepid 1

5 economic growth in Europe has hindered the U.S. economy this year; employment will grow only 1.5%, real gross product will expand by 1.7% and real income will rise by 1.4% - with metropolitan areas again providing the vast majority of that growth. In 2014, however, once the restraints of the government shutdown and sequestration are removed, IHS anticipates improvements across each of these indicators as metro economies spearhead economic progress. However, our nation s recovery is fragile and unemployment remains elevated. The US economy cannot afford to be stifled or endangered by avoidable, selfmanufactured crises similar to that to which it was exposed to in October. 2
