2 Summary Information Title: Charles S. Philips Collection Call Number: PH26 Creators: Charles S. Philips Collection Dates: Extent: x 5 dry plate negatives; 2 volumes 4 x 5 silver gelatin prints Language: The collection is in English. Repository: Chester County Historical Society 225 N. High St. West Chester, PA Date Published: 1998, updated 2010 and 2018 Author: Pamela C. Powell, Photo Archivist History Background note on Charles S. Philips Charles Sumner Philips was born at Greenbank Mill in New Castle County, Delaware on November 27, 1871, the son of Isaac Dixon Philips and Caroline Elizabeth Commons 1. He was the eighth of nine children. His father was the proprietor of the mill and lived in the homestead that had been in the family since Robert Philips purchased it in In 1888 the family sold their home and moved to Wilmington 3. Charles Philips was employed as a draftsman with the Pusey & Jones Company in Wilmington, Delaware when he purchased his first camera in Pusey & Jones were engaged in the shipbuilding industry and were leaders in the paper-making machinery industry during the 1890s. Many of the views Philips took show his workplace at Pusey & Jones in Wilmington. He also photographed his own neighborhood in Wilmington and places significant to the Philips family, such as Greenbank Mill. Philips looked at his subjects with an engineer s eye. He recorded the structure of the bridges he photographed, the placement of mills in the landscape, and actual paper mills in operation, such 1 Alpheus H. 3 as the Beaver Valley Paper Mill. Many of his views were taken on bicycling trips; his bicycle complete with a box for carrying his glass plate negatives, can be seen a good number of his photographs. He frequently placed his camera on nearby fence posts or on the ground, to compensate for the lack of a tripod. The negative inventory makes a good diary of his activities, Philips was in Newport News Virginia for the launch of the battleship Illinois in It is not clear if this was a collaborative work assignment from Pusey & Jones, or if he took a job with one of the Newport News ship builders. He was still working in Newport News by the time the 1900 census was taken 5. Philips was recorded as a lodger in a rooming house, his occupation was as a draftsman. According to the records of the Wilmington Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends, Philips applied for membership in twelfth month of 1906 and was accepted into membership first month In the 1910 census, Philips was in Wilmington working as a draftsman for the DuPont Powder Mills, this time living with his brother Edward and his family on North Street 7. In 1912 Charles Philips purchased Savery s Mill in Pennsbury Township from Sarah Savery the widow of Thomas 8. Philips took a series of photographs of the mill and the nearby village of Parkersville in 1913 which show the property. By the time the 1920 census was taken, Philips was recorded as a mechanical engineer for DuPont residing in his own residence on the Fairville- Chadds Ford Road 9. Philips move to Chester County, Pennsylvania prompted his resignation of membership in the Wilmington Monthly Meeting in For whatever reason, Philips is listed in the 1930 Federal Census as a lodger, living with a tenant farmer named William J. Powell on Parkersville Road in Pennsbury Township. According to the census, he is a civil engineer at the Powder Mills [DuPont]. He finally moved into his residence in Savery s Mill in He is listed in the Chester County Bell Telephone Directories in Parkersville from 1932 through According to his obituary in the Daily Local News 12, Philips property in Pennsbury Township included 167 acres, several houses, barns, mill and other outbuildings. Charles Philips married Florence Eva (Woodruff) Monte ( ) in May of He passed away on August 15, 1937 after a short illness at age 66 and was buried beside his parents in the Wilmington & United States Census, Newport News Ward 4, Newport News City, Virginia Roll 1735, page 23A, Dwelling 133, Family 471, William J. 5 Forms Dry plate negatives Dry plate negatives Personal Contributors Philips, Charles S., photographer Arrangement For rapid location of a particular subject check the index. All images have been cross-referenced by subject, geographical location, or proper name. All subject headings used are from the Thesaurus for Graphic Materials published by the Library of Congress. The inventory listing gives a description for each plate beginning with the information transcribed from the original negative envelope and followed by additional information within square brackets added by the photo archivist. An attempt was made to keep the negatives in their original order by retaining the photographer s original numbering system (hence, the irregularities). Negatives follow Philips original numbers, and those negatives which did not have a number were numbered sequentially, beginning with 400. Access and Use Access Restrictions: None Acquisition Information: The Collection was given to the Chester County Historical Society by Mrs. Florence Eva Philips and Newton I. Montie, the photographer s widow and step-son respectively. Newton Montie donated 45 more glass plate negatives in With the help of a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded in 1997, the collection of 461 glass plate negatives were duplicated, indexed and made available to the public. Internegatives, copy negatives and reference prints were made by The Chicago Albumen Works in Housatonic, Massachusetts. The reference prints were housed in archival quality photograph albums by CCHS volunteers. The collection was expanded in 2017 with donations of 22 negatives from the Hockessin Friends Meeting and 40 negatives from the Friends of Auburn Heights Preserve. Fifty-seven negatives were found mislabeled in the collection and were added to the Philips collection in Preferred Citation: Charles S.
