Yeager during his tenure at Bethlehem Steel as industrial photographer.the second half the this collection consists of photos and slides taken by Yeager while traveling in Pennsylvania, New York, and New England, and to a lesser degree Washington, DC and the southern United States. - Page 3 -

4 Biography/History James Henry Yeager was born August 29, 1911 in Easton, Pennsylvania to Ferman John Yeager and Florence Clewell Yeager. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1928 and Churchman Business College in Yeager worked for several years at Pennsylvania Pump and Compressor in Forks Township, Pennsylvania before joining the Bethlehem Steel Corporation as an industrial photographer, where he worked for more than thirty years until his retirement in A self-taught photographer, Yeager had a passion for the medium and a talent for composition; he traveled often, frequently photographing scenes of nature, trains, and covered bridges. Yeager died October 22, 1986 at the age of 75. Scope and Contents The first half of this collection contains photographs taken by James H. Yeager during his tenure at Bethlehem Steel as industrial photographer. Photos consist of black & white and color images of the following Bethlehem Steel facilities: Bethlehem, Pennsylvania steel plant, both interior and exterior views; Homer Research Laboratory; Quincy, Massachusetts shipyard; and Sparrows Point, Maryland shipyard and blast furnace exterior. Of particular interest is a single photograph showing a movie set inside the south Bethlehem steel plant presumably documenting the creation of a Bethlehem Steel film. There also are several photographs showing coal mining, ore carriers, and taconite stockpiles, as well as photos of products and structures made using Bethlehem Steel metal, including bridges, skyscrapers, ships, and power line towers. The second half the this collection consists of photos and slides taken by Yeager while traveling in Pennsylvania, New York, and New England, and to a lesser degree Washington, DC and the southern United States. Places photographed in Pennsylvania include Easton, the Canal Museum, Bethlehem, Valley Forge, Hopewell Furnace Village, Ephrata Cloister, the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Delaware Water Gap, and Saylors Lake. Yeager had a particular interest in trains, photographing the American Freedom Train in Bethlehem during the Bicentennial, as well as trains from the Lehigh Valley Railroad, the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, and the Central Railroad Company of New Jersey. The collection also contains good documentation of several World's Fairs, including black & white photographs of the 1941 New York World's Fair, with especially good coverage of the Transportation Exhibit, and color slides of the 1964 New York World's Fair and Expo '67 in Montreal, Canada. - Page 4 -
