Welcome to Haapsalu and Läänemaa to discover the rich history and fascinating culture within untouched nature! Läänemaa provides an ideal holiday site for those, who like to have much space and to discover everything themselves. One can spend several days on the meadows of Matsalu National Park and still hear new bird sounds. After an unforgettable dawn in the raised bog, you can spend the midday in a pine forest eating forest berries until full and enjoy a great concert in the evening. The areas of Estonian Swedes on coastal regions of Noarootsi and Nõva parish and on the islands of Vormsi and Osmussaar offer true natural beauty. In the summer you can have a tour on an Estonian Swedish boat constructed using the methods of old boatbuilders. The inhabitants of Haapsalu, the romantic holiday resort, Lihula, the ancient centre of Läänemaa, and small villages are seemingly very silent but very sincere and hospitable. A few minutes in a small country church give you peace of mind, the medieval Teutonic castle provides a glance into long gone centuries and each individual manor house shows you that the local simplicity can be inherently majestic. The fine arts in Läänemaa coexist and complement each other: quite a few museums serve as an art gallery or a theatre. An exhibition in art gallery can be accompanied by superb cookery or cosy chamber concert. Läänemaa is the favourite place of creative people, many artists, writers and theatre-related people living here or spending their summers here. Haapsalu, the centre of Läänemaa, has been the favourite resort for summer holidays and mud baths for royalties and people of cultural background for a century and a half. Each romantic walk between the wooden lace houses in town bordered by the sea on three sides always leads to new discoveries. The choice of cultural events in the summer season is vivid. Everyone hears their favourite music regardless of the style, and art events never fail to surprise. Several international film festivals are held in Läänemaa. Those who like healthy lifestyle can choose between multiple hiking routes and numerous options for having an activity holiday. See You in Läänemaa!

In addition to the late-night Haapsalu võib olla uhke Eesti kõige pikema järjepideva suveteatri traditsiooni üle: alates linna 700. sünnipäevast aastal, mängitakse igal suvel vabaõhulavastusi Valge Daami legendi ainetel. Haapsalu Raekoja 4 hilisbarokne paekivist hoone valmis a. Krundi ja raha uue maja ehitamiseks turuplatsi kohale andis tollane Haapsalu linna omanik Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie ( ). Portaali kohal on dolomiidist Haapsalu vapp, mille keskajast pärinev sümboolika tähistab piiskopkonna kaitsepühakut evangelist Johannest kotka kujutisena linnamüüri taustal. Püsiekspositsioon ja temaatilised näitused annavad ülevaate Läänemaa ajaloost: talutoast, kalapüügist, salakaubaveost ja kuurordi ajaloost. Meenutamaks linnavalitsemise aegu, on raekojas sisustatud legendaarse linnapea Hans Alveri ( ) tuba. Rongiliikluse hiilgeaegu meenutab Eesti Raudteemuuseum 23. Iloni Imedemaa 3 on üks põnevaim peredele mõeldud teemakeskus, kus saab näha Ilon Wiklandi originaaltöid peamiselt Astrid Lindgreni T The Living History of Läänemaa The museums in Läänemaa are characterised by clever use of space, constantly updated exhibitions and friendly hosts. The limestone late-baroque building of Haapsalu Town Hall 4 was completed in The plot and money to build a new house on the grounds of market place were granted by Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie ( ), the owner of Haapsalu at the time. Above the portal there is a dolomite coat of arms of Haapsalu. Its medieval symbols depict the Bishopric s patron saint John the Evangelist as an eagle against the town wall. Permanent exhibition and thematic exhibitions provide an overview of history of Läänemaa: farm, fishing, smuggling and resort history. To remember previous town governments, the room of Hans Alver ( ), the legendary mayor has been set up in the Town Hall. The prime of train traffic is recorded in the Estonian Railway Museum 23. Train traffic between Haapsalu and Tallinn started in 1905 but stopped in The railway station of the favoured summer resort of the Russian imperial family and aristocrats was built under a special project. The unique 216 m railway platform was fully roofed so that the members of the tsar family could step out of any wagon without making their feet wet. The station complex includes a passengers building, imperial pavilion and the roofed area between them. The highlights of the museum besides the most unique tsarist railway station building in Estonia include old locomotives and carriages, storehouse, water tower, depot, turntable and houses of railroad workers. Ilon s Wonderland 3 is one of the most fascinating theme centres for families where you can see the original copies of Ilon Wikland s works (mainly the illustrations for Astrid Lindgren s books), as well as draw yourself, watch films, write a letter to Karlsson and get busy in the Bullerby kitchen. In the yard there are handicraft workshops and Mattias house, one can listen to secrets of the Magic well, walk on stilts and watch children s performances. Õuel on avatud käsitöökojad ja Mattiase maja, saab kuulata Võlukaevu saladusi, kõndida karkudel ja vaadata lasteetendusi. Haapsalust 10 km Tallinna suunal asuv Ants Laikmaa majamuuseum 18 säilitab kunstniku eluaja ( ) atmosfääri. Põneva arhitektuuriga rahvusromantilises stiilis majas on Laikmaa elukäiku tutvustav väljapanek, ateljee, töö- ja eluruumid. Siin asuvad kuus Laikmaa originaaltööd, lisaks taieseid tema õpilastelt. Laikmaa on maetud oma koduparki, kus on säilinud kunstniku poolt istutatud puid. Üheksale tammele andis kunstnik teda sagedasti külastanud kultuuritegelaste nimed. Viimses puhkepaigas asub ka nimeline pink. E Okase muuseum 19, 19. saj keskpaigas algselt kõrtsiks ehitatud, isikupärase õhkkonnaga majas asuv eramuuseum avati Temperamentse ja mitmekülgselt võimeka, renessansliku loojana tõi E Okas ( ) Eesti maalikunsti ja graafikasse küpse meelelis-erootilise käsitluse kaasaegsest naisest ning kasutas julgeid värvilahendusi. 5 S 6 6 Sajandite saladusi varjavad müürid Saare-Lääne piiskopkonna keskuseks 13. saj rajatud Haapsalu piiskopilinnus 7 on üks paremini säilinud keskaegseid linnuseid. Põhjasõja käigus Vene keisririigi usesse minnes lammutati müürid Peeter I käsul madalamaks. W 19. saj, kui Haapsalu sai suvituslinnaks, hakati linnusehoovi pargiks kujundama. Suurele õuele ehitati lava, a toimus seal Läänemaa esimene laulupidu. Linnuse vallikraavis on laste mängupark keskajaaineliste atraktsioonidega. Eraldi märkimist väärib linnuse süda: toomkirik. Algselt Saare-Lääne piiskopkonna peakirikuks ehitatud Haapsalu Toom-Niguliste kirik, kus kohtuvad nii romaani kui gooti stiili elemendid, valmis a-il, on suuremaid ühelöövilisi kirikuid Baltikumis ja Põhjamaades. Tsistertslaste mungaordu ehitusnõuetele vastavad lihtne Kas teadsid, et Haapsalu Toomkirikus vältab heli 11 sekundit, luues ainulaadse akustikaga kontserdipaiga, mis pakub kordumatuid elamusi kuulajatele ning on tõsiseks väljakutseks esinejatele. interjöör, roosaken portaali kohal ja torni puudumine, et uskumuse kohaselt Jumalale upsakusest mitte liiga lähedale pürgida. Ümara põhiplaaniga ristimis- Walls That Hide Secrets of the Centuries Haapsalu Episcopal Castle 7 built in the 13th century as the centre of Ösel-Wiek Bishopric is one of the best preserved medieval castles. The grand complex, expanded and rebuilt over the centuries, has been repeatedly tested by wars and fires, but stands today as a renovated complex that serves as history preserving tourist attraction and a place for cultural events. The quadrangular castle or the so-called small castle is the oldest part of the castle, consisting of the Dome church and covenant building. The latter housed both the living and working quarters of the clergy and canons, as well as the dome school, and was surrounded by outbuildings. The 803 m circular wall with cannon towers for the big castle was completed in early 16th century. The castle lost its protective function after substantial damage during Livonian War. During the Great Northern War the castle was lost to the Russian empire and the walls were made lower under the orders of tsar Peter I. Haapsalu became a summer resort in the 19th century and it was decided to turn the courtyard into a park. A stage was built in the big yard and the first song festival in Läänemaa was held there in Today the small castle houses a fascinating and constantly developing museum complex and the 38 m bell tower provides a picturesque view over Haapsalu and Noarootsi peninsula across the bay Tagalaht. The castle moat is used as children s playground with attractions based on the medieval times. The Dome church, the heart of the castle deserves special attention. The Haapsalu St Nicholas Cathedral was completed in 1260s as Ösel-Wiek Bishopric s main church, uniting Romanesque and Gothic elements and being the biggest single-naved churches in the Baltics and Nordic countries. It has the simple interior of Cistercian monastic order, rose window above the portal and no tower because of the belief that it is extreme arrogance to get too close to God. The christening chapel with round ground plan is rather unique in the world, the only known similar kabel on maailmas üsna ainulaadne, sarnaseid on teada ainult Itaalias. Tõenäoliselt on neitsi Maarjale pühendatud kabel ehitatud 14. saj teisel poolel. See salapärane nähtus on andnud inspiratsiooni legendideks. Tõenäoliselt on see lugu kirjutatud aastaid varem ning võimalik, et sai esmakordselt ette kantud mitte Haapsalu linnuses, vaid hoopis haruldase fassaadiga, puidust kalasoomuseid meenutava mustriga Kiideva mõisas toimunud pidustustel. buildings being in Italy. The chapel dedicated to Virgin Mary probably dates from the second half of the 14th century. The windows are set in such a way that the full moon shining through a side window casts the shadow of a woman to the middle window. This mysterious phenomenon has inspired some legends. Did You know that a sound persists for 11 seconds in Haapsalu Dome Church, making the church a concert site of unique acoustics, that provides an exceptional experience for the listeners and a serious challenge for the performers. White Lady A canon once dressed his beloved as a choirboy and brought her into the castle. Women were threatened with death if they entered the castle and the girl was walled in chapel wall alive when the secret of the young couple was revealed. In full moon August nights a female figure, the so-called White Lady, appears on the window of christening chapel. There are several legends about the beautiful ghost, the most well-known and wide-spread being the above mentioned version, that was recorded in writing in late 19th century by Carl Russwurm. The German scolar was a master of many things: mathematics, language and history teacher, historian, etnographer, polyglot, writer, estophile, researcher of Estonian Swedes and a man interested in the life of simple people. The legend has inspired several narratives, song contests, fencing tournaments and even car rallies have been held in honour of the White Lady. For more than thirty years the local theatre has been performing open-air plays inspired by the legend for thousands of spectators, refreshing and renewing the play every two to three years. In 1938 The White Lady, a narrative by Johanna Enni von zur Mühlen was published. The story was probably written down years earlier and was first performed not in Haapsalu castle but during festivities in Kiideva manor. The latter is known for its rare facade covered with wooden fish scale pattern. 7 7

Taamal paistab Aafrika rand: linna peamine supelrand 20. saj I poolel. Praegu asuvad seal linnuvaatlustorn 5, tantsupaviljon 6 ning rohkete atraktsioonidega laste mänguväljak 7. Aafrika rannast piki Promenaadi kuursaali suunas jalutades möödud Päikesekellast 8 (Haavamägi, 1924). Päikesekella tugisamba tahke kaunistavad allegoorilised bareljeefid, mis kujutavad inimelu kulgu ajas. Lähedal asuvas merre istutatud Allikapaviljonis 9 näeb Haapsalu promenaadi ja kuurordi ajalugu tutvustavat fotonäitust. Eesti Apostliku Õigeusu Maria-Magdaleena kiriku 10 avamisel 1852 viibis ka keisrinna Aleksandra Fjodorovna koos tulevase keiser Aleksander II- A 1 vt nr 1 Promenaadi skeemil, lk 9 1 No 1 on Promenade map, p 9 A Walk on Haapsalu Promenade When walking down Kooli Street from Town Hall 1 towards the sea, the first sights to see are Ilon s Wonderland 2 and Haapsalu St John s Church 3. A warehouse was turned into a church in the 15th century. It differs from others by its North to South orientation. The bell tower of the church is the oldest in Läänemaa and one of the oldest in entire Estonia. From there, Vee Street leads you to the beautiful Promenade with fascinating history. To the right are Rudolf Tobias ( ) park and monument 4 (by Roman Haavamägi, 1929). Tobias went to Haapsalu County School, studied the piano and graduated from St Petersburg Conservatoire. From 1910 he worked in Berlin. Jonah s Mission is Tobias most important composition; in addition he composed the first overture, cantata, piano concert, piano sonata and string quartet in Estonian music history. His ecclesiastical choir music is highly appreciated. In the background you see Aafrika beach town s main beach in the first half of the 20th century. Today it is the location of bird watch tower 5, dance pavilion 6 and children s play area 7 with numerous attractions. Walking down the Promenade from Aafrika beach to kursaal you pass the Sundial 8 (by Haavamägi, 1924). The sides of the sundial pillar are decorated by allegorical bareliefs depicting the passage of human life in time. In the nearby Spring Pavilion 9 on the sea you see a photo exhibition about the history of Haapsalu promenade and resort. When the Orthodox St Mary Magdalene s Church 10 was opened in 1852, empress Alexandra Feodorovna was present with future emperor Alexander II. The wooden facades of the two congregation buildings from the second half of the 19th century, situated next to the church, have been preserved untouched. One of them was the home of Ilon Wikland 11 and her grandparents in the 1930s. She later became a known Swedish artist. Another old wooden house on Linda Street is the house ga. Kahe 19. saj II poolest pärineva kogudusemaja puitfassaadid on säilinud algsel kujul, hooned asuvad kiriku kõrval. Ühes neist elas a-il oma vanavanemate juures hilisem tuntud Rootsi kunstnik Ilon Wikland 11. Linda tänava äärde jääb veel üks vana puumaja, milles peatus a Haapsalut külastanud Vene tsaar Peeter I saj lõpus ehitatud puitpitsiline kuursaal 13 on Eesti suvituslinnades asunud kuursaalidest ainsana säilinud algkujul. Kummalgi pool kuursaali auvad dekoratiivtrepid, taamal Tagalahes paistab siin 1930-ndail paiknenud puidust dekoratiivskulptuuri eeskujul valmistatud jääkaru kuju 15. Kõlakojast edasi jalutades jõuad Carl Abraham Hunniuse ( ) monumendi 16 (Haavamägi, 1928) juurde. The nearby band shell 14 has undergone several reconstructions over the time and the music pavilion stood on the site before kursaal was built. Kursaal and the band shell were the favourite places of Russian imperial family and St Petersburg aristocrats who spent their summers here in the late 19th century and the next turn of the century. The place retained its popularity during the pre-war years of Republic of Estonia. Kursaal was reopened in 1997 as a summer restaurant and concert site. Kursaal is lined with decorative staircases on both sides. In the bay Tagalaht in the background stands a polar bear statue 15 designed after the wooden decorative figure that stood here in the 1930s. Walking away from the band shell you reach the monument (by Haavamägi, 1928) of Carl Abraham Hunnius 16 ( ). The Baltic German doctor working in Haapsalu was one of the first people to notice the locals to ease health problems with sea mud and began to research the mud. The first mud treatment centre was established in Haapsalu in 1825 on his initiative. Helilooja Pjotr Tšaikovski ( ) peatus a suvel koos kaksikvenna Modesti ning vend Anatoliga õuemajakeses Suur-Mere tänava ääres. Seda suve meenutab kuulsa helilooja loodud klaveripalade tsükkel Mälestusi Haapsalust. Pingi seljatoekaunistus meloodia, mida kuuleme Tšaikovski 6. sümfoonia 2. osas meenutab eesti rahvaviisi Kallis Mari. Helilooja külaskäiku armastatakse Haapsalus ikka ja jälle hea sõnaga meenutada, küll temanimeliste muusikapäevadega või ajalooaineliste teatrietendustega. Tšaikovski pingil istudes ei jää märkamata ka a ehitatud, uhke torniga Peltzeri villa 20. Praegu asub taastatud hoones ja kaasaegses juurdeehituses hotell. Kahe pika poolsaare holmide vahele jäävad kaks väikest lahesoppi: Suur- ja Väike-Viik. That summer is recalled in Memories from Haapsalu, a cycle of piano pieces composed by the famous composer. The backboard of the bench is decorated with a melody from the second part of 6th symphony by Tchaikovsky and it resembles Estonian folk tune Kallis Mari (Dear Mary). Haapsalu still remembers the composer s visit with a good word, organising music festivals named after him or historical theatre performances. You cannot sit on Tchaikovsky bench without noticing the Peltzer Villa 20 built in 1859 and its fancy tower. The restored building and the modern extension now serve as a hotel. Kultuurikeskuses asuv Haapsalu linnagalerii 21 on pühendunud professionaalsele kunstile. Näitusi vahetatakse enamasti iga kuu või kahe tagant, heade näitusetingimustega galerii on harilikult pikalt ette broneeritud. Jalutades mööda peatänavat Lossiplatsi poole, jääb paremat kätt Haapsalu linna ja ehk kogu Läänemaa ehteks olev Haapsalu Pitsikeskus 20, kus on oma väärika koha leidnud meie oma maailmaime, õhuline Haapsalu sall. Toimuvad töötoad, saab käsitööd kaasa osta ning näha vahelduvaid temaatilisi näitusi. Vaid loetud meetrite tagant leiab hubase poe ja keraamikatöökoja Tigukass 18, mida peavad kunstnikest ema ja tütar May ja Ursula Aavasalu. Soovi korral saab siin jälgida ka tööde valmistamisprotsessi või vormida ise endale mõni meelepärase ese. Eelmistest üle tee asub kunstnik E Okase muuseum 19. Mitmesugust käsitööd pakub väike poeke Mari-Mirt käsitöö 16. Läänemaa Meeting Place of Artists, Art Lovers and Craftsmen Despite being a small town, Haapsalu has a significant number of galleries and handicraft workshops, and Posti, Karja, Ehte, Jaani and Kooli Streets deserve to be called the art streets. Some places unite visual arts or applied arts finely with cookery: both soul and body are fed. Several artists have chosen Haapsalu or Läänemaa for spending their holiday or even for living. Haapsalu Town Gallery 21 in the Cultural Centre is dedicated to professional art. Exhibitions are usually changed every month or every two months, the gallery usually being booked long beforehand due to good exhibiting conditions. Walking down the main street towards Lossiplats (Castle square), you see Haapsalu Lace Centre 20, the gem of Haapsalu and perhaps entire Läänemaa, to your right. The centre proudly presents the airy Haapsalu shawl, our own wonder of the world. Here you can participate in workshops, buy handicraft and view alternating thematic exhibitions. A few steps away is Tigukass 18, a cosy shop and ceramic workshop, run by artist mother and daughter May and Ursula Aavasalu. If desired, you can watch how works are created or shape a desired piece yourself. Across the road you find the E Okas Museum 19. A versatile choice of handicraft is offered by a small shop called Mari-Mirt käsitöö 16. The Epp Maria Gallery 17 is a unique family gallery in Haapsalu as well as in the world. The motto of the new owners of the former famous Valdmann Cafe is originally the belief of Nicholas Roerich ( ), a famous Russian artist who visited Haapsalu: being conscious of beauty saves the world. The rooms on two floors display not only the works of three generations of 11 Epp Maria Galerii 17 on nii Haapsalu kui ka laia maailma mõistes ainulaadne peregalerii. Endisaegse kuulsa Valdmanni kohviku uus pererahvas on motoks võtnud Haapsalut külastanud kuulsa Vene kunstniku Nikolai Roerichi ( ) veendumuse: ilu teadvustamine päästab maailma. Kahel korrusel asuvates ruumides ei eksponeerita mitte ainult pere kolme põlvkonna kunstnike teoseid, vaid ka kokakunsti. Ruumide sisustus on tervikliku galeriiteose osa

Talvel võib siin kamina paistel jalga puhata. Paliveres, Haapsalust 20 km Tallinna poole asub U-Stuudio 22. Selliseid seltse on kõikjal maakonnas. artists of the family, but also cookery. The interior of the rooms is a piece of art in itself. The building of Haapsalu Art School 10 houses school s gallery, and the small and cosy Kuke Gallery with alternating exhibitions/ sales. Here you can buy gold and silver jewellery and high quality handicraft. In the winter you can rest and warm your feet by the fireplace. Handicraft shop Ehe ja Ehtne 9 offers a wide range of wooden handicraft. The Müüriääre Cafe 5 with art friendly hosts and atmosphere also serves as an art gallery. The Ehte Handicraft and Art Chamber 5 by the Old Town roundabout offers works by local artists and craftsmen. The gallery in Ilon s Wonderland s theme centre 3 displays the works of Ilon Wikland, an artist, who spent her childhood in Haapsalu. On the main street you also find handicraft shop Gift 22 and cosy cafe-bookshop Haapsalu Raamat 11. In Hingepesa 13 you can buy ceramics, forged items and many other things that are healthy and characteristic of Haapsalu. There are also Uba ja Humal 14, where European small producers beer and coffee are sold, Marion Undusk s sewing workshop called Hull Siil 15, and many other fascinating seasonal businesses on the main street. 20 km towards Tallinn from Haapsalu is Palivere, where you find the U-Stuudio 22. U and S are the initials of Urve Sikemäe, a glass artist. Inspired by simple shards of glass, she melts them into unique dishes, stained glass, lamps, bottles and figures. U-Stuudio also provides painted porcelain and silk items. Should fans of handicraft stay in Läänemaa for longer, they will definitely come to a local handicraft society to weave carpets on weaving loom, try glass painting or making felt, and to discuss the world matters at the same time. Such societies can be found everywhere in the county. Õ Õhkõrnad sallid, kirkad lilltikandid ning tillukesed tanud Pitsiliste Haapsalu sallide ja rätikute traditsioon sai alguse 19. sajandi II poolel. Erilise luksusasja kuulsuse saavutas see tänu rikastele supelsakstele. Peen seltskond vajas ka peeneid rätikuid, mistõttu vahetati lihtne maavillane sallilõng peenvillase vastu. Sõrmusest läbi mahtuva salli kudumise oskusi on edasi antud põlvest põlve, tänu hakkajatele õpetajatele on sellest saanud isegi kohalike koolide tütarlaste käsitöötundide osa. Igal suvel, Valge Daami ürituste raames toimuval Haapsalu Pitsipäeval toimub sallikudumise võistlus, millest võtavad osa mitte ainult kohalikud meistrid, vaid ka käsitöösõbrad üle Eesti ning aasta-aastalt kaugemaltki. Haapsalu sallid-rätid on reisinud näitustele paljudesse maadesse. Vanimad näited rikkalikust mustripärandist on saanud inspiratsiooni otse loodusest: karukella-, piibelehe- ning liblikakirjad. Paljude mustrite sisse on kirjutatud tükike maailma kultuurilugu: kui soovite, võite osta või ise kududa näitlejanna Greta Garbole, Rootsi ja Hispaania kroonitud peadele ja Eesti presidendiprouadele pühendatud mustritega salle. Lilltikandid kaunistavad Lihula ja Kirbla kihelkondade saanitekke ja vaipasid alates 19. saj lõpust. Lilltikandiga tekid olid jõukuse näitajaks ning uhkuseasjaks. Tikkimise kunst levis Lihulast ümbruskonna kihelkondadesse, jõudes Muhu saareni välja. 20. sajandi alguses tikkis käsitöömeister Marie Mustkivi esimese lilltikandiga punase seeliku, millest sai Lihula naiste moerõivas. Tekkide tikkimise traditsioon vaibus pärast II maailmasõda, kuid punaseid S Subtle Shawls, Bright Embroidered Flowers and Tiny Coifs The tradition of lacy shawls and scarfs of Haapsalu originates in the second half of the 19th century. The reputation of a special luxury item was gained due to aristocratic holiday makers. As the fancy people required fancy shawls, the simple homespun yarn was replaced with a refined one. The skills of knitting shawls that fit through a ring have been passed down the generations, and thanks to eager teachers the skills are even taught to girls in handicraft classes in local schools. The White Lady Days held each summer include Haapsalu Lace Day with shawl knitting competition, which is entered not only by local masters but also by knitting lovers from all over Estonia. Year by year competitors come from more and more distant places. The shawls and scarfs of Haapsalu have travelled to exhibitions to many countries. The oldest examples of rich pattern heritage were inspired by the nature itself: patterns of pasque flower, lily of the valley and butterfly. A piece of world s cultural history has been woven into many of the patterns: if desired, you can buy or knit yourself shawls with patterns devoted to actress Greta Garbo, the royalties of Sweden and Spain, and spouse of the president of Estonia. Embroidered flowers decorate the sleigh blankets and carpets of Lihula and Kirbla parish since late 19th century. Blankets with embroidered flowers indicated wealth and pride. The art of embroidery spread from Lihula to the surrounding parishes, reaching even the island of Muhu. In early 20th century Marie Mustkivi, a crafter, made the first red skirt with flower embroidery, which became the fashion item for women of Lihula. While the tradition of embroidered blankets subsided after World War II, the red folk costume skirts are proudly worn even today as unique among the national costumes of Estonia. Today the historical embroidery decorates also pillows, jumpers and handbags. The national costumes of women of Vormsi Island with their 13

Naiste riiete tagasihoidlikule värvivalikule peamiselt must, valge ja punane on kontrastiks tüdrukute kollased, punaste triipudega kleidid. Vormsi laste rõivaid kannavad nende omanäolisuse ja erksuse tõttu ka mitmete Eesti esinduskooride väikesed lauljad. L Legendaarsed mehed ja naised Venemaalt a külastas Haapsalut ja selle ümbrust Vene tsaar Peeter I, otsides kohta uue sõjasadama jaoks. Külaskäiku meenutab mälestustahvel tollase kohtufoogti Jenckeni majal 2, kus tsaar peatus. Peeter I külastas ka Ungru mõisa. L crinkly skirts, scanty sleeves and miniature coifs stand out amongst very colourful national costumes with their exceptional simplicity. The modest colours of women s outfit mainly black, white and red form a contrast with the girls yellow dresses with red stripes. The outfit of the Vormsi children is worn by little singers of several Estonian renowned choirs due to their individuality and brightness. Legendary Men and Women from Russia Russian tsar Peter I visited Haapsalu and its surroundings in 1715 to find a place for a new war port. A memorial plaque to remember the visit was placed on the house of Jencken, the local judge and administrator, in whose house the tsar stayed. Peter I visited the Ungru manor too. A legend tells that his carriage fell over near a big stone while on the road: thus the erratic boulder in Paralepa forest was named Peter s stone 25. The visit inspired several other legends that are turned into theatre performances for the traditional events of the town. One story tells the emperor saw a dark patch on the wall paper in Ungru manor and found the discarded portrait of his enemy, Charles XII, behind a cabinet. Peter hung the portrait back on the wall and said: Had you won, my portrait should have been hidden. Empress Catherine II is mentioned in even more astonishing legends in Läänemaa. She gave her lover Grigory Orlov the Koluvere castle 27 in It is not known whether the prince ever made it to Koluvere. After his death Catherine regained the castle and in 1786 deported the young Württemberg princess Augusta Caroline there (either because of pure jealousy or political intrigues). The woman died under mysterious circumstances and was buried to Kullamaa church 28. Haapsalu linna on viimased poolteist sajandit hinnatud eeskätt kuurortina. Esimene mudaravila avati a ning ravimeetod on tänini au sees. Tänu imelise ravimuda kuulsusele on Haapsalut külastanud veel mitmed Venemaa kroonitud pead a Aleksander I, Aleksander II koguni neljal korral (1852, 1856, 1857, a.), Aleksander III 1871 ja a ja viimasel korral ka tema poeg keiser Nikolai II. Kullamaa kiriku esisel platsil asub mälestuskivi siin sündinud Eesti arstile Gustav Reinhold Hirschile ( ), kes töötas Haapsalut külastanud Vene keisrite Aleksander III ja Nikolai II ihuarstina. Ühena vähestest eestlastest on talle omistatud Püha Andrease orden, Venemaa kõrgeim autasu a valiti Hirsch Haapsalu linna aukodanikuks tema teenete eest kuurorti edendamisel. Pole tähtis, et tegeliku sented to Friedrich Wilhelm von Buxhoeveden. Friedrich s wife Natalia Grigoryevna Alexeyeva is believed to have been the daughter of empress Catherine II and prince Orlov. For century and a half Haapsalu has been valued primarily as a resort. In addition to warm sea water and pure forest air of the idyllic town, rumours spread in early 19th century about a new miracle: healing curative mud. Also the famous Russian surgeon, anatomist and educator Nikolay Pirogov ( ) came to see it. The first mud treatment centre being opened in 1825, the treatment method is still appreciated. Stories about the magic curative mud inspired many other imperials of Russia to visit Haapsalu: Alexander I in 1804, Alexander II even four times (1852, 1856, 1857 and 1859), Alexander III in 1871 and 1880, the last visit being with his son, emperor Nicholas II. On the square in front of Kullamaa church stands the memorial stone for a native Estonian doctor, Gustav Reinhold Hirsch ( ), who served as the personal doctor of Russian emperors Alexander III and Nicholas II during their visit to Haapsalu. He is one of the few Estonian to have been awarded the highest award in Russia, the order of St Andrew. In 1904 Hirsch was nominated the honorary citizen of Haapsalu for his contribution in developing the resort. No other celebrity has inspired as many legends as Peter I and Catherine II, however, there is an interesting story related to Alexander III. In the 19th century the aristocrats used to have picnics on Pullapää peninsula. Alexander III is supposed to have been there too, baking potatoes in the fire and drinking a cocktail consisting of equal parts of vodka and sparkling wine. The cocktail was later named Imperatorskoje after him. There is a monument for Alexander III 14 in Pullapää

On põnev teada, et Bismarki sõber ja Puškini õpingukaaslane on end mitte ainult Haapsalu, vaid kogu Eesti ajalukku kirjutanud ka modellina: üks Eesti esimesi professionaalseid maalikunstnikke Johann Köler on maalinud a Gortšakovi. Gortšakovi arhiivist on ka leitud vanim Puškini autograaf. Alates a sai Haapsallu ka rongiga, kuid aurulaeva ühendus Peterburiga seati sisse juba 1845.a a juunis saabus siia aurik Konstantin, pardal 17-aastane juuratudeng Anatoli ja 27-aastane konservatooriumi õppejõud, hilisem maailmakuulus helilooja Pjotor Tšaikovski ( ). Haapsalus ootas neid ees viimase kaksikvend Modest. There is a memorial plaque for prince Alexander Gorchakov 12 ( ), a foreign minister of Russia, on the wall of present day Children s library on Wiedemanni Street in Haapsalu. Although historians still argue about his actual date and place of birth, the prince was well worth the legends. It is an interesting fact that the friend of Bismarck and university friend of Pushkin has been recorded in the history of Haapsalu and entire Estonia as a model: Johann Köler, one of the first professional painters in Estonia, painted Gorchakov in Gorchakov s archive contained the oldest autograph of Pushkin. From 1905 one could take a train to Haapsalu, but steam ships travelled to and from St Petersburg already since In June 1867 steamer Konstantin arrived with a 17 years old law student Anatoly and a 27 years old conservatoire tutor, later world famous composer, Pyotr Tchaikovsky ( ) on board. The latter had his twin brother Modest waiting for him in Haapsalu. In the small summer cottage on Suur-Mere Street Tchaikovsky completed the arrangement of first act and some scenes of the second act of his first opera, The Voyevoda, and cycle of piano pieces Memories from Haapsalu. The small seaside town inspired also Nicholas Roerich, an artist, who visited the town in 1880 and His sheets of diary only say good words about Haapsalu, and the same attitude can remotely be sensed in the paintings completed here: Vast Lands Lie behind the Seas and The Varyag Motive. Haapsalu shawls saw their bloom due to Russian aristocrats. A legend tells that the empress was once presented a fine shawl that fit into a nut shell but when folded out covered the lady s shoulders entirely. Haapsalu shawl does not fit into the hazelnut shells from Estonian forests but to verify its authenticity it can easily be pulled through a ring. Haapsalus asuvas Rannarootsi muuseumis 1 (Aibolands museum) avati a koos suurejoonelise Vormsi pulma lavastusega esimene näitus. Muuseum avati ametlikult a Rootsi kuningapaari poolt. Külastajate silme all on ehitatud mitu traditsioonilist rannarootsi laeva, millega korraldatakse lisaks väikestele lõbusõitudele ka tähtsaid kultuurireise. Pürksi mõisa pargis asub endises mõisa abihoones Noarootsi Loodusinfokeskus 11, mille O On Estonian Swedes Trails According to various sources the Estonian Swedes have lived on the North-West coast and western islands of Estonia for more than 1,000 years. It was probably in the interests of the seafarers in those days to have inhabited places on the coast as posts, but the Baltic German nobility preferred Christian peasants to settle the empty coastal areas. The Estonian Swedes remained a rather private community due to the isolated settlements, different privileges and language barrier. Origins and culture were highly valued. World War II forced most of them to abandon their homes and flee to Sweden. Today several institutions and societies strive to sustain the culture. The Museum of the Coastal Swedes 1 (Aibolands museum) opened the first exhibition in 1998 with a grand production of Vormsi wedding. The museum was officially opened in 2002 by the Swedish royal couple. In addition, Pakri and Vihterpalu weddings have been held. The most interesting item is definitely the 20 m hand-embroidered tapestry (Aibotapet) depicting the history and everyday life of Estonian Swedes. Besides usual museum work the art of old shipbuilders is honoured. Visitors have on several occasions seen a traditional Estonian Swedish boat being built. The boats are used for short cruises as well as important cultural trips. One can see the Noarootsi peninsula (Nyckö) across the bay Tagalaht from the museum. St Catherine s Church 8 and vicarage with original interior stand out among the Swedish red houses in the villages. Saare (Lyckholm) Manor 9 was restored from ruins by Gustav von Rosen in 1990s. The Lyckholm Museum in the stables introduces history and agricultural equipment of Noarootsi as well as cooperation between local Estonians and Swedes, Germans and Finns. In the parish centre Pürksi (Birkas) you find the manor house and park 10. The manor houses Noarootsi Upper Secondary School, where one can study the Swedish language and Scandinavian cultural history in depth. The former outhouse of the manor in the manor park is used as Noarootsi Nature Information Centre 11, which introduces the natural sights of the region. In the middle of shallow bays, relict lakes, reed beds and coastal meadows of Silma Nature Reserve stands a nature school 19

Tõenäoliselt juba viikingite ajal alanud asustusloole viitab ka saare rootsikeelne nimi. Skandinaavia legendi kohaselt on siia maetud peajumal Odin. The Swedish name of the island is a reference to first settlement, probably dating back to the Viking era. A Scandinavian legend tells that major god Odin is buried here. The viable Estonian Swedish community was replaced by military base during the Soviet era. When the Soviet forces left, nothing but a cowshed and a threshing barn had survived in Bien, a village of seven farms in the middle of the island. The descendants of islanders living in Sweden had the ruins of Chapel of Jesus (built in 1766) cleaned of brush and conserved, and grave stones placed in the cemetery. The bust of Martin Luther at the chapel gate was originally figurehead of a British ship that was shipwrecked in The treasures of the windy island are the alvar meadows and gneiss breccia boulders, shingle ridges, juniper areas and lighthouse. In the sea near the island lies ca 540 million Neugrund meteorite crater, the biggest meteorite crater in Estonia, offering exciting discoveries for divers. The sand sings because when you step on it, the rubbing grit sounds like violin. The Information Centre in Nõva Nature Centre in Peraküla provides information about natural sights in the region and displays two permanent exhibits: forest fires and migration of arctic birds. Peraküla 4 has preserved a century old cobblestone road. The St Olaf s Church in Nõva 5 dates from the 18th century representing the coastal chapel type with unique stained glass imitations and Meeste ja naiste istepingid on erineva kujundusega. Altari puunikerduste valmistajaks peetakse kohalikku mõisaprouat Josephine von Baggenhuffwudti. Romantilise Rumpo küla kadakate vahelt ulatub pikk kiviklibune nina kaugele merre. Pühendunud loodushuvilistele on maiuspalaks saare liigirohke loodus. V is one of the few preserved wooden churches in Estonia. Seats for men and women are of different design. The wood carvings of the altar are supposed to have been made by lady of the manor (Josephine von Baggenhuffwudt). They say the lady asked to be buried in the Nõva churchyard in such way that she can keep an eye on her property even from her last resting place. Vormsi a Unique Island in the Baltic Sea The coastline of the island, which is less than 100 km 2 in size and emerged from the sea 3,000 years ago, is highly jointed. Amongst rocky bottomed beaches and reed beds some sandy places for swimming can be found. In romantic Rumpo village a long shingly strip of land stretches from the junipers far into the sea. Dedicated nature enthusiasts are fond of biodiversity of the island. Here they find several plant and animal species that are extinct or threatened elsewhere in Estonia and entire Europe. While lichen species alone are counted 301, in total there are over 900 plant species and over 200 bird species. Corn crake is rather rare in Europe but very numerous in Vormsi. Between alvars with coastal pastures, wooded meadows and juniper bushes you find forests rich in berries and mushrooms. The Swedish name Ormsö stands for snake island. The name is supposed to originate from Orm (Snake), a Viking from Iceland, but there is a natural explanation too. Before World War II the island had ca 2,500 inhabitants, most of them being Estonian Swedes, who preserved their original dialect and culture over the centuries. The dense settlement is now only hinted at by lilac blossoms in the bushes in the spring and house foundations overgrown with grass. Today the island has ca 300 year-round inhabitants. The St Olav s Church 1 in Hullo, the biggest village on Vormsi, dates from the 14th century. It has a unique quadrate ground 1 No 1 on Vormsi map, p 22 Did You know that the Nõva wooden church is one of the smallest in Estonia by its dimensions (13.6 x 7.1 m). 21

Praegu on saarel aastaringselt ligi 300 elanikku. Vormsi suurimas külas Hullos asuv Püha Olavi kirik 1 on ehitatud 14. saj. ja on haruldase ruudukujulise põhiplaaniga, altariruumi laes on säilinud vanad laemaalinguid. Vanim rist selles on a-st, noorim kannab aastaarvu Kiriku lähedal asuv rootsikeelne Eesti Vabadussõja ausammas 2 on üks vähestest, mis jäeti nõukogude ajal puutumata. 1 nr 1 Vormsi kaardil, lk 22 plan and the pulpit ceiling has preserved some old ceiling paintings. The oldest cross dates from 1723, the youngest being dated at The Monument of Estonian War of Independence 2 near the church bears Swedish text and is one of the few that remained untouched during the Soviet era. Vormsi Farm Museum 3 displays restored Swedish Estonian farm complex: buildings and smoke sauna with thatched roof as well as various commodities and items of clothing. The untouched nature of Vormsi offers pleasant discoveries each season. A ferry travels to the island in the summer. Tegevust jätkub siin pikaks ajaks. Haapsalu lähedal Rohuküla tee ääres asuva Ungru lossi 15 kavandamisel on inspiratsiooni saadud Saksamaal asuva Merseburgi lossi fassaadidest. H Kiltsi lennuväli 16 asub ca 800 ha suurusel alal. Betoonkattega rajad on ca 2500 m pikad, samuti on säilinud mitmed angaarid. Külastused tuleb kooskõlastada Eesti Kaitseliiduga ning elamuste otsijatel tasub varisemisohtlikel ehitistel ettevaatlik olla. Ridala Maarja-Magdaleena kirik 32 on Lääne-Eesti üks kaunimaid ja rikkalikuma kunstiväärtusliku sisustusega kirikuid. Kiriku lääneportaali ehisviilu nišis asuv nimipühaku kujuke on Eesti üks vanemaid skulptuurifiguure. Osaliselt on säilinud keskaegsed maalingud, uudistamist väärib kiriku võidukaaregrupp ning väga omapärane laemaaling kooriruumis. Kirikaias leidub kaks 13. saj pärinevat päikeseratta ja elupuu motiiviga trapetsikujulist hauatähist. Saanika külas 31 asub Eesti muusikaajalukku hindamatu panuse jätnud Cyrillus Kreegi ( ) tähistatud sünnipaik. Vormsil ja Haapsalus lapse- ja koolipõlve veetnud Kreek õppis Peterburis trombooni ja kompositsiooni. Kirgliku rahvalaulukogujana moodustavad suure osa tema koorilauludest just rahvaviiside, sealhulgas koraalimeloodiate rahvapäraste versioonide seaded. Kreek on kirjutanud ka Eesti esimese reekviemi. Haapsalu kesklinnast paari km kaugusel põhja/kirde pool asuvat Uuemõisa mõisa 17 on esmamainitud 1539 piiskopimõisana. Hidden Treasures on Village Road The fascinating places of parishes in Läänemaa can be discovered by making a circle around Haapsalu and then moving to each compass point until meeting the sea. There are enough activities for a long time. Design of the Ungru castle 15 by Rohuküla road near Haapsalu was inspired by facades of Merseburg castle in Germany. Ungru castle is one of the most imposing Baroque Revival buildings in Estonia, but unfortunately time has not been very merciful for it. The beautiful building was never completed, the Soviet era taking the last toll by having almost a third of the building used as filling for airbase runway. Kiltsi airport 16 covers ca 800 ha. Concrete paved runways are ca 2,500 m long, several hangars have also been preserved. Visits are to be coordinated with Estonian Defence League. St Mary Magdalene s Church of Ridala 32 is one of the most beautiful and richest in valuable art in Western Estonia. The figure of Mary Magdalene in the niche of decorative gable of western portal is one of the oldest sculpture figures in Estonia. Medieval paintings have been partly preserved. You should also see the church s group of triumphal arch and the very idiosyncratic ceiling painting in the choir. In the church garden there are two trapezoid gravestones with motifs of sun wheel and thuja from the 13th century. In Saanika village 31 you find the marked birth place of Cyrillus Kreek ( ), whose contribution to Estonian music history is invaluable. Kreek spent his childhood and school years in Vormsi and Haapsalu, and learned trombone and composition in St Petersburg. Being passionate about folk songs, many of his choir songs are based on folk melodies, including arrangements of folkish hymn melodies. Kreek also composed Estonia s first requiem. Risti-Virtsu maantee kõrval laiub salapärane kaitsealune Marimetsa raba 26, üks Lääne-Eesti vanimaid Haapsalu town centre was first mentioned in 1539 as a bishop s manor. The manor belonged to the de la Gardie family in the 17th century. The house belonged to the military during the Soviet era and was later used as a production building. Now it houses a primary school and the White Hall is used to hold chamber concerts. Besides the Ants Laikmaa House Museum there is the Koela Farm Museum 13 in Lääne-Nigula parish. The barn-dwelling, granary and sauna with tools and household items introduce life and work in a farm in Läänemaa. The interior of Lääne-Nigula church 19 dating from the 13th century but reconstructed thoroughly after a fire is dominated by a magnificent Empire altar wall by Sigismund from St Petersburg. Altarpieces The Last Supper and Resurrection are copies of the same paintings by Leonardo da Vinci. In Võntküla on Ääsmäe-Haapsalu road you see the so-called ribbon pole 20. According to traditional belief, children are brought by storks and should you want a child, it helps to tie a white ribbon under a stork s nest. The highest point of the county is Pikajalamägi 23 (51 m) in Palivere. Ca 11,000 years ago this was the coast line. Building of a stronghold on the spot known as Vallidepealse in early 2nd millennium failed for unknown reasons. Now the region is developed by Palivere Tourism and Recreational Sports Centre, the Sport Centre providing the best sporting facilities during summer and winter season. In the ancient valley of the Taebla river across the Haapsalu road spreads the Kuliste meadow 21. On the banks of the picturesque river bend you find the song stairs and song oak, site for Midsummer bonfire and camping. On the forested border of Läänemaa you find Piirsalu. It stretches on the site of former Annamõisa village, which was emptied of people in 1957 and turned into Soviet Union s rocket base 24. Huge earth-covered hangars were used to keep top secret intermediate range missiles R-12 with nuclear warhead. There were only 8 such bases in Estonia. Today the area belongs to Estonian Defence League. Near Risti railway station stands a memorial for the people deported from Western Estonia 25 in 1941 and It is made of railroad rails and called The Rails Remember. Among the 3,000 people deported to Siberia during the massive deportations of the Soviet Union were people of neighbouring counties and Hiiumaa. By the Risti-Virtsu road stretches the mysterious protected Marimetsa raised bog 26, not only one of the oldest bogs in Western Estonia but also a typical open bog rich in bog hollows and bog pools. The open landscape with water bodies is a picturesque sight. The bog is lined by forested dune bars. Many rare plant and bird species can be seen here. ning tüüpilisi älve- ja laukarikkaid lagerabasid. Avar veesilmadega maastik pakub maalilist vaatepilti. Sood ääristavad metsaga kaetud luitevallid. Siin leidub palju haruldasi taimeja linnuliike. Kullamaa on pika kultuurilooga kant: justkui annaks eestikeelne kihelkonna nimi kulla + maa erilise pinnase haritud inimeste kasvamiseks, siin on sündinud või elanud mitmed eesti keelele ja kultuurile olulised inimesed. Kullamaa Vakuraamat on teadaolevalt vanim eestikeelseid tekste sisaldav kirjutis. Kullamaa kiriku 28 rikkalikus sisustuses leidub epitaaf pastor Heinrich Gösekenile ( ), esimesele eesti keele reeglite sõnastajale. Kirikuaias on arvatavasti Eesti vanima dateeringuga ratasrist kirjaga Sitta Kodt Matz. Sitakoti Mats, ristil oleks tema nimi justkui vanas kirjaviisis, olevat olnud jõukas eesti talupoeg, kes ostis end pärisorjusest vabaks ning kinkinud kirikule koguni kroonlühtri. Nimes on peidus aga irooniline konks: nimi võib pärineda Sitakoti talu järgi, kuid võib olla hoopis rannarootsikeelne Siin puhkab (jumalas) Matz. Vallakeskuses asub ühelööviliste kirikute kohta harvaesinevalt lai Püha Martini kirik saj ehitatud Gotlandi-pärase ristimiskivi Kullamaa is an area with long cultural history: as if the parish name kulla (gold) + maa (land) provides special grounds for growing educated people. Several people important for the Estonian language and culture were born or lived here. Kullamaa Vakuraamat (Kullamaa Bushel Book) is the oldest known writing containing texts in the Estonian language. The rich interior of Kullamaa church 28 includes epitaph for Heinrich Göseken ( ), a minister, who first formulated the rules of the Estonian language. In the churchyard you find the probably oldest dated round cross in Estonia, saying Sitta Kodt Matz (Shitbag Mats). The name on the cross seems to be written in old spelling system. Mats was supposedly a wealthy Estonian peasant, who paid to be freed of serfdom and even presented the church a lustre. Yet the name involves an ironic twist: it may derive from farm called Shitbag, but might as well be in local Swedish and mean Here rests (in God) Matz. Koluvere castle 27 carries several fascinating legends and has served as the residence of Bishop of Ösel-Wiek as well as a nursing home. Having been thoroughly renovated it is once again open to the public. R Rich Southern Läänemaa within Untouched Nature When travelling in Southern Läänemaa it is worthwhile to abandon the Risti-Virtsu road every now and then. A large share of Martna, Lihula and Hanila parishes is included in Matsalu National Park, which has many hiking trails and bird watch towers. Exceptional biodiversity of the nature lures bird watchers and botany enthusiasts from all over the Europe each year. History enthusiasts find a sufficient number of ancient stronghold hills and manor houses. The Early Classicist Suure-Lähtru manor 29 (1778) in Martna parish, built 25

Taanlaste, rootslaste, sakslaste ja venelaste käes olnud unikaalsest kaitserajatisest on kahjuks säilinud vaid varemetes müürid, mis on konserveeritud ja varustatud infotahvlitega. Lihula piiskopija ordumõisa ajalugu ulatub 13. sajandisse. Praegune härrastemaja on valminud a. Lihula linnusemäe lähedal asuvad ühe Eesti vanema Kloostri mõisa varemed. On the first floor of the magnificently arched manor house you find a museum and a brick-floored hunters hall. The fancy grand floor can be used for concerts and festive occasions. In the centre of the parish you find the St Martin s Church 30, which is unusually wide for a one-aisled church. The church was built in the 16th century with a Gotlandic babtismal stone and Empire chancel. Its collection of epitaphs with coats of arms is third in size in Estonia. The Rannajõe bird watch tower 33 in Martna parish can be accessed by wheelchair too. The old bridge 34 over the Kasari river was completed in The onetime longest ferroconcrete bridge in Europe 308 m long and 7 m wide is now opened for pedestrians only. The bridge offers a beautiful view of the river, which is third in Estonia in length and fourth in amount of water. On Lihula stronghold hill 36 stood an ancient Estonian stronghold. In 1211 Lihula was named the centre of Bishopric of Estonia and a stone stronghold replaced the ancient one in The stronghold has belonged to the Danes, Swedes, Germans and Russians. Today there is nothing to see but conserved wall ruins with information plates. The Teutonic bishop s manor of Lihula dates back to the 13th century. The current manor house dates from Near Lihula stronghold hill you see the ruins of Kloostri manor, one of the oldest manors in Estonia. The Cistercian convent was built in late 13th century. The last owner of the manor was Axel Nikolai von Fersen of Low German origin. He was one of the first car owners in Läänemaa and the manor supposedly even had a telephone. Penijõe manor 35 built in 1835 as ranch of Lihula manor houses the Museum and Nature Centre of Matsalu National Park showing slideshows and videos about nature. The permanent exhibition introduces history and nature of Matsalu. Eduard Bornhöhe (Brunberg), the later well-known prose writer and an initiator of the historical novel genre in Estonia, worked in Matsalu manor as a tutor for the Von Höyningen-Huene family. Near the ruins of Kõmsi Orthodox Church 39 lie the more than 2,500 years old tarand graves (cist graves with irregular small rectangular enclosures). Karuse church 37, one of the oldest sacral buildings in Läänemaa was built in 1260 as fortress church of the Livonian Order. The church hall is decorated by Baroque pulpit and altar. Karuse church is likely to be the burial place of Otto von Lutterberg, the Livonian Order provincial master, who supervised construction works and perished around 1270 in a battle with Lithuanians. Kalmistul on säilinud ilmselt varasest keskajast pärit hauatähised. 18 trapetsikujulist hauakivi kannavad paganausu sümboleid. Legendi järgi müürinud ehitusmeistrid kunagi kiriku seina sisse hane, sellest tulnud ka Hanila nimi (eesti k hani). Vatla mõisaansambli 46 hooned on ühed esinduslikumad Läänemaal. Peahoone saalis asub triumfiteemaline hallides toonides friis, omapärane on endisse mantelkorstnasse ehitatud, grotti meenutav mõisahärra magamistuba. Vatla maalinn oli saj muistse Karuse kihelkonna keskus. Vanas Hanila koolimajas asub August Tampärgi nimeline Hanila muuseum 41, kus näeb mitme põlve jooksul kogutud esemeid Porsiku talust. Karuse railway station 38, which was abandoned for a long time, has now been restored and used as private house but is open for tourists too. Hanila church 40 built in the 13th century is one of the most stylish examples of Early Gothic in Ösel-Wiek Bishopric. In the cemetery you see grave markers probably dating from the Early Middle Ages. The 18 trapezoid grave stones bear pagan symbols. A legends tells that master builders walled a goose in the church wall, hence the name Hanila (hani = goose in Estonian). The buildings forming the Vatla manor ensemble 46 are amongst the most representative in Läänemaa. A legend tells that the lord of the manor had bet the neighbour he can build a house where you cannot see the other corner when standing in a corner. And indeed, you cannot see another corner when standing in the arched coach house and storage building. The main building contains a grey-toned frieze depicting variations on triumph, and the unique bedroom of the lord of the manor, built into an old mantled fireplace and reminiscent of a grotto. Vatla stronghold was the centre of ancient Karuse parish from 11th to 13th century. The old Hanila School building houses the August Tampärg Museum of Hanila 41, displaying items collected from Porsiku farm over several generations. Kirss Oldsmobiles Museum 42 in farmhands house of Virtsu manor displays unique horse-drawn vehicles, bicycles and automobiles from private collection of Valeri Kirss. The fascinating Virtsu Amateur Museum 43 is situated in the building of Virtsu Development Society. Lady of the Virtsu manor, Dorothea Augusta von Helwig ( ), was fond of Friedrich Schiller and had a memorial erected on Puhtulaid peninsula in It was the second Schiller monument 45 by Carl Thure von Helwig and the only one preserved today. The monument was damaged during wars and was taken to the Läänemaa Museum in A copy was erected on Puhtulaid. During World War I Puhtulaid 44 was used as airbase of Russian seaplanes. In the lush park forest of Puhtu you see a ca 400 years old oak and a ca 430 years old pine. The peninsula has a dense population of grass snakes. From 1928 to 1940 Puhtulaid belonged to Jakob von Uexküll, who built a summer cottage on the southern end of the peninsula. Now there is an ornithology station. 27

NordEstNõva mittetulundusühingu eestvedamisel on valminud mitu viikingilaeva. Sea and Coast Läänemaa is a gate to islands providing ferry connection from the big harbours of Rohuküla and Virtsu to Muhumaa and Saaremaa as well as Hiiumaa and Vormsi. The local small harbours are gaining popularity, providing a safe landing for yachts. The Did You know that the 26.5 km ice road between Rohuküla on mainland and Heltermaa in Hiiumaa is the longest in Europe since small harbours include Sviby on Vormsi, Dirhami on North cape of county, Österby on Noarootsi peninsula, and Veskiviigi, Grand Holm Marina and Westmeri in Haapsalu. Amateur seafarers and local fishermen are served by small harbours and marinas. Wooden Boat Society Vikan has built several wooden boats following the Estonian Swedes traditions (small sailboat or jaala Vikan and sailboat or jahta Runbjarn, whose names might be translated as Ringed Seal and Ruhnu Bear). Also, Hoppet (Hope), a great galeas was restored and several traditional low bottomed rowboats, called ruup, have been built. Around Nõva several Viking boats have been built. If desired, you can hire an oarboat, try a sea kayak, canoe on still waters of Matsalu or feel like a real Viking on various archaic vessels. The northern beaches of the county offer excitement, winds and waves for surfers. The singing sandy beaches stretching to the horizon gave the golden beach allegory to Kuldrannake (Golden Beach), a book by Sven Danell on Estonian Swedes everyday life. Winter creates entirely new possibilities ice covers the shallow coastal water, making it possible to drive on ice roads to Noarootsi or in colder winters to Vormsi and even to Hiiumaa. Ice road is our winter wonder, being exotic enough to surprise visitors from Middle or Southern Europe. According to a folk tale a visitor from far was told how we drive across the sea in the winter upon which the visitor was sincerely alarmed: Aren t the waves getting on your way!?
