3 & the wine regions Eclectic, exciting, energetic Okay, it s cheesy, but Tony Bennett left his heart there for a reason! Possibly it is the easy acceptance of all people coupled with the energy this city radiates. The Gold Rush put on the map with the likes of Levi Strauss and Domingo Ghiradelli establishing their first trading outlets here. The invention of the cable car in the late 1800 s, by interestingly enough a Londoner, enabled the wealthy to escape the hoi polloi and build their mansions high in the hills. 7 Shasta Cascade & wilderness country Spectacular, Scenic, Serene Almost unfathomable in size, this 2.1 million acre forest in the north-east corner of California represents more than 20% of the state and is roughly the size of Belgium! The jewel of the region is Mt. Shasta. Visible from more than 100 miles and over 14,000 feet high, it is technically a live volcano. With amazing and numerous scenic by-ways, the driving experience will thrill and humble you. Redding to the south, is the largest city in the area and the gateway to Shasta Trinity National Recreation Area, a mecca for outdoor activities from camping to backpacking; horseback riding to mountain biking. This is also the home to Shasta Lake, the largest in California, formed by Shasta dam which has a spillway three times as high as Niagara Falls. 8 The North Coast Quiet coves, historic towns Stretching North from Bay to the Oregon border, the North Coast offers 389 miles of spectacular coastline. The landscape is defined by the Pacific Ocean, but instead of boardwalks and bikinis there are dramatic cliffs and pounding waves - the sunbathers are mostly sea lions! There are no strip malls here, just small sleepy towns tucked along the ragged shoreline. This stretch of Highway 1 is made up of numerous little worlds. Bodega Bay will be familiar as the setting for Hitchcock s The Birds, while you can explore the Russian River Valley en route to more than 70 wineries, including the Korbel Champagne Cellars at Guerneville. You ll adore the picturesque hill-top town of Mendocino with its New England-style houses. Stop here for lunch and explore its art and craft shops. Cruise further up the coast to Fort Bragg, a great place for whale watching or take the Skunk Train trip through the California redwood groves on the 4-hour round trip. Further north stroll the quaint streets of Ferndale with its Victorian Main Street or enjoy a harbour cruise from the old town waterfront at Eureka. Between here and the Oregon border the highway heads inland to the Redwood, where you can picnic amongst some of the oldest and tallest trees in the world. 9 Yosemite, Kings Canyon & Sequoia s Majestic mountains, awesome scenery The western Sierra Nevada Mountains in central California are dominated by the most famous National Park in the USA, Yosemite. Natural unspoilt beauty with innumerable lakes, meadows, forests and granite summits make for an almost surreal experience. At the centre is Yosemite Valley, a half-mile deep depression carved by glaciers during the last ice age, which now soar to 3,000 feet high domes and many powerful waterfalls, including three of the worlds highest. Open 365 days a year, there are activities across all four seasons, although some roads will be closed in the winter months. Steam train rides and Model T rentals offer a unique way to enjoy the view, while rustic cabins, resorts and landmark hotels offer every level of accommodation. The other national parks of the Sierras are King Canyon and Sequoia with their vast areas of unspoilt and sometimes inaccessible scenic wilderness.
