The landscape of Eastern Norway is fields, low mountains, rocky shores, and islands. You can find quiet harbors and sandy beaches along the coast. Locals come here for calm and unhasting rest. Historic walled cities - Fredrikstad and Halden - are located on the shores of Oslofjord next to each other. Each of them is unique in its own way. Fredrikstad is famous for its Old Town surrounded by bastions in the shape of a star. Stone towers of the fortress rise above the town of Halden. During the tour, we will visit both cities and the islands of Hvaler archipelago, which are included in the National Natural Park area. Here you can see skerries and islands of all shapes and sizes. If you wish, you can swim in Oslofjord (in summer). 31 Excursions FREDRIKSTAD AND HVALER ISLANDS (6 hours) Coastal Nature - the Old Town of Fredrikstad - Hvaler Islands - Skerries - Mini-Cruise of Oslofjord Fredrikstad is situated 90 km away from Oslo. The city is located on the shores of Oslofjord in the estuary of Glomma River (the longest river in Norway, 604 km). The fortified city, which was founded by the order of the Danish King Frederick II in 1567, is preserved better than any other fortress in Scandinavia. Defensive structures, drawbridges and moats refer to the 17th century. The excursion to Fredrikstad includes a visit to the old town (Gamlebyen) and bastion fortifications. The old town is attractive because of its authentic atmosphere and provincial coziness. Bastion fortifications in the shape of a star remind of the military history of the city and former battles. In summertime, you can take a river cruise (15 min.) from the Old Town to the New Town. Exploring the city even further, we will move through the islands of Hvaler archipelago scattered along the coast of Fredrikstad. Here you can see skerries and islands of all shapes and sizes. If you wish, you can swim in Oslofjord (in summer). A cruise to the islands by a pleasure boat lasts for 40 minutes and allows you to enjoy sea views (from May 1 to October 1). At the end of the tour we will visit the town of Drøbak, which is located in the narrowest part of Oslofjord. The distance between the two sides is only 500 meters. The famous Christmas house and the office of Julenissen (Norwegian Christmas gnome) are located in Drøbak. The tour lasts for 5-6 hours. 31

The name "workshop" hides an entire village where you can get acquainted with the art of making glass products, look into the old wooden houses, the glass and porcelain museum, visit the factory shop, where you will be pleasantly surprised by offers. In the house of honey and sweets you can find the local heather honey and Norwegian tea. Most of all you will be impressed by a range of candles and candlesticks in the House of Light. And, of course, the unique Christmas shop creates cozy Christmas and New Year's Eve mood. Here you can get ideas for a festive evening and New Year gifts. 34 Excursions OSCARSBORG FORTRESS AND THE TOWN OF DRØBAK (5 hours) The Fortress - Oslofjord - Museum - Christmas House Oscarsborg Fortress is located on two islands in the narrowest part of Oslofjord just 40 km away from Oslo. The fortress was built in the mid-19th century for defensive purposes. On the 9th of April, 1940, Oscarsborg Fortress played a key role in the sinking of the German cruiser Blücher and detention of the German fleet in the early days of the German attack on Norway. It is said that there are about 500,000 to 700,000 seabirds inhabiting the island about 230 species in total, most of them are to be found in the cliffs. One of the most famous National Tourist Routes is Trollstigen also known as the Trolls Path. The road is a part of the RV63 highway. The stretch of road named Trollstigen is not particularly long, but it takes you through powerful nature, breathtaking views, steep mountain slopes and high waterfalls. What attracts tourists in this short section of the road? Trollstigen is a mix of beautiful nature and unique modern engineering technologies. The curvy route from Geiranger to the bottom of Romsdal valley is 106 kilometres long. Framing the experience are lofty mountains with names like Kongen ( the King ), Dronningen ( the Queen ), Bispen ( the Bishop ), Trollveggen ( The Trolls Wall ), Romsdalshorn, and Alnestind. 56 Excursions Ålesund Tour to Briksdal Glacier, Duration: approx hours Tour starts in Ålesund by car. We pass Norwegian villages Hellesylt, Stranda, and Stryn in the Nordfjord region on our way to Briksdalsbre Fjellstove, a small village at the very end of Oldedalen valley, at the foot of the Briksdal Glacier. We stay for two hours at Briksdalsbre Fjellstove. Climbing the Briksdal Glacier is not a part of this tour as it requires training, equipment and a professional guide. However, you will have a chance to come closer to the glacier and enjoy the view. There is a café and a souvenir shop in the village. A special mode of transport troll-cars will get you closer to the glacier. Briksdal Glacier is an arm of Jostedal Glacier the biggest European continental glacier. 57 Excursions Ålesund The Bird Island of Runde, Duration: approx. 6 hours Runde Island, famous for bird colonies, is 2-hour drive away to the south-west from Ålesund. The route often goes above the waters and via numerous bridges and includes ferry Hareid-Sulasund. You will pass gorgeous mountains and colorful traditional Norwegian villages on your way to Herøy Municipality, where the bird island of Runde lies. One of such villages Remøya has a 428-metre long bridge to Runde built in Before the bridge was built, the only way to get to the island was by sea. The sea way is still available, but must by individually booked in advance. Runde is the third largest and the southernmost bird national park in Norway, and has the widest variety of sea birds species in Scandinavia 230 in total. During the nesting season from February to August every year, more than 500,000 sea birds take over the island. Around 100,000 pairs of puffins nest here, but large colonies of great skuas, gannets and shags also establish themselves here during the nesting season. Guests can try their hand at real science by floating off a small self-named boat to study oceanic streams. The nature areas on Runde are vulnerable, important and interesting for research. Runde has also been called "a treasure Island" because of the finds of gold coins from the wrecked Dutch ship Akerendam from Some divers are still trying their luck hoping to find the treasure.
