3 DETAILED ITINERARY: DAY 1: Arrival to Managua Granada. Arrival International Airport in Managua. Transfer to Granada. Lodging in Granada. Lodging Granada. Day 2: Islets Boat Tour - City Tour Granada (B, L). Granada Today we will begin with a relaxing boat ride around some of the enchanting islands of Lake Nicaragua. There are a total of about 360 islands which are a product of the eruption of Mombacho Volcano. Enjoy the beautiful landscape and the abundant wildlife that surrounds the area. Continue to the colonial city of Granada, founded by Captain Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in 1524, named after the city of Granada in Spain, and considered as one of the colonial jewels in America. It is located in a strategic position on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, but this also made her victim of many pirate attacks during the colonial times. Granada has many colonial churches, winding lanes, and grand colonial homes with traditional tiled roofs. Walk around the main plaza of the city and see "La Merced" church, the famous "Casa de Los Tres Mundos" and the San Francisco convent. Due to the historical and cultural value of the city, it is in the process of being declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Return to hotel. Rest of the afternoon at leisure. Lodging Granada. Mombacho Cloud Forest Granada

4 Day 3: Masaya Volcano and Market - León (B, L) Today we will start heading West towards Leon. On the way, we will stop at Masaya Volcano National Park. It is Nicaragua s first and largest National Park including two volcanoes and five craters in an area of 54 km². The indigenous people and the Spanish conquerors feared the constant eruptions of the volcano and therefore the Spanish baptized the active volcano "La Boca del Infierno" or "The Mouth of Hell". In order to exorcise the Devil, in the 16th century they established a cross on the crater lip, "La Cruz de Bobadilla" (named after Father Francisco Bobadilla). The nature of the Park is rough but at the same time provides a peaceful atmosphere. The eruptions have had a dramatic impact on the surroundings since rocks and volcanic ashes still cover the surrounding area. Different types of vegetation appeared after the eruptions. The park is also inhabited by many different kinds of animals including coyotes, skunks, raccoons, opossums, deer, iguanas, and monkeys. Leon Cathedral An amazing experience is that you will be able to peek over the edge at the Masaya Volcano, and look into the impressive crater, which is continuously emitting smoke and sulfur gases. Then continue to Leon for a brief city tour including the largest Cathedral in Central America which is also a World Heritage Site. Lodging in León. Crater Masaya Volcano Crater Masaya Volcano

5 Day 4: León - Gulf of Fonseca Crossing Boat - La Unión (B, L) In the morning we will start our trip from Leon towards the Port of Potosí where a boat will be waiting. El Cruce del Golfo (Boat Gulf crossing) is not only the fastest, but also the most scenic route between Nicaragua and El Salvador. Nonstop, the boat trip takes about 2 hours at most and allows us to witness the beautiful scenery of the Gulf of Fonseca, which includes wildlife, several islands and volcanoes in the background. All luggage will be packed away in waterproof bags as a precaution more than for the risk that water will enter the boat. However, do prepare for an eventual wave splashing! On the way to La Union it is possible to watch fishermen busy with their daily fishing routine. Upon arrival in La Unión, we will head to customs for the procedures of entering El Salvador. Continue to hotel. Lodging Eastern El Salvador. Day 5: Community Tour Suchitoto (B, L) Today will start our trip to Central El Salvador, but on the way we will stop for a meaningful experience in El Icacal beach. El Icacal is one of the best beaches in the country and yet you will find a pristine and authentic environment. A small community of about 40 families lives in El Icacal. It is an ideal place if you are looking for a rural, eco and meaningful experience. We will visit the rural schools sponsored by our nonprofit organization where you will be able to interact with the local children and perhaps play a little soccer with them. We will also learn about the sea turtle conservation program, since in El Icacal, four species of sea turtles nest: leatherback, green, Olive Ridley and Hawksbill. If in season, you will be able to release baby sea turtles into the Pacific Ocean. In the afternoon continue to Suchitoto. Lodging in Suchitoto. Boat that crosses Gulf of Fonseca Sea turtle release at El Icacal Beach Welcome activity, El Icacal School

6 Day 6: Suchitoto Town And Indigo Workshop (B, L) Today we will enjoy Suchitoto, one of El Salvador's colonial towns. The name Suchitoto means the place of the Flower Bird. Suchitoto is home to Santa Lucia Church, built in 1853, majestically situated in the town's central square. Today we will also enjoy an Indigo Workshop. Indigo is a natural blue colorant extracted from the Xiquilite plant. It was a very important element for the Mayans since they used it for magical/religious rituals, as a medical plant, for pottery, and for painting. When the Spanish Conquistadores arrived to El Salvador in 1524, Indigo became the new source of wealth in the region. Pedro de Alvarado noticed how the Indians used several shades of blue in their clothes. In 1558, the Habsburg King Charles I ordered the territories of Guatemala and Cuscatlán (El Salvador), to produce indigo for Spain. The commercial route was through Granada, then to Cartagena de Indias from where it travelled to Spain. In the XVII century, the ounce of indigo was as valuable as gold. Indigo production (oxygenation) El Salvador indigo, has always been recognized as top quality worldwide. We will learn art techniques used on clothing as we experiment in designing our own scarf or bag that you will be able to keep as a souvenir. Antigua Guatemala is located at the Panchoy Valley and is surrounded by three volcanoes and mountains with coffee plantations. With its cobblestone streets and ancestral edifications, it provides a marvelous setting for cultural and religious traditions. A gem of urban planning and colonial architecture, Antigua s features has been well preserved. Because of its immense historical and cultural value, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) named Antigua as a World Heritage site in We will enjoy a walking tour through the entire town. 21 Volcanoes National Park DAY 8: VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK JOYA DE CERÉN SUCHITOTO (B, L) This morning we will head to Volcanoes National Park, a UNESCO BIOSPHERE RESERVE where three amazing volcanoes (Izalco Volcano, Santa Ana Volcano and Cerro Verde) embrace beautiful Coatepeque Lake which fills a crater of another volcano. Izalco Volcano is one of the youngest volcanoes in America since it was born in the 1700 s, whereas Santa Ana Volcano is thousands of years old. Izalco Volcano was known as the Lighthouse of the Pacific since its lava guided the ships on the Pacific Ocean Coast. No lava is currently flowing, but both volcanoes are still active since constant fumaroles are present. Volcanoes National Park offers amazing hiking and trekking. For an easy trek, in the extinct volcano Cerro Verde you can enjoy the flora and fauna with a local guide. We will learn about volcanoes and the importance of this specific ecosystem. You can also choose to hike Santa Ana Volcano, from which you will enjoy amazing views of Coatepeque Lake, the Pacific Ocean, Izalco Volcano and of course the sulfur lagoon within the crater. Later, we will visit the archaeological site of Joya de Cerén, unique in all Mesoamerica since it shows how indigenous people lived before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors. The eruption of Volcano Caldera in 600AD interrupted the daily life of this community which was preserved by more than 10 layers of ash until its discovery in It is an important site since it now represents the remains of the best preserved Pre Hispanic Village of Mesoamerica. Then transfer to Suchitoto. Joya de Cerén Lodging in Suchitoto hotel. Hiking Santa Ana volcano

22 DAY 9: INDIGO BLUE AND SUCHITOTO COLONIAL TOWN (B, L) Today we will learn about indigo, a natural colorant extracted from the Xiquilite plant. In the XVII century the ounce of indigo was as valuable as gold. El Salvador indigo, has always been recognized as top quality worldwide. We will learn the process of indigo as well as art techniques used on clothing as you design your own scarf that you will take back as a souvenir. In the afternoon we will tour the city. The founding of San Salvador's ''Ciudad Vieja''- Old City-back in happened in the surroundings of Suchitoto, which is perhaps the Salvadorian town with the oldest edifications. Fortunately, even though most of its inhabitants left the town during the 1980 s conflict, it didn t suffer significant infrastructure damage. Suchitoto is The cultural capital of El Salvador, an amazing colonial town with cobblestones streets, large balconies, tile roofs, doorways, porches and windows that will take you to colonial past. In Nahuatl language, its name means the place of the Flower Bird, and it is considered a national historic jewel for its wealth of tourist attractions and its constants artistic activities. Suchitoto is home to Santa Lucia Church, built in 1853, majestically situated in the town s Central Square. Indigo production (oxygenation) Lodging in Suchitoto hotel. 26 DETAILED ITINERARY: DAY 1: ARRIVAL - TRANSFER TO SAN SALVADOR Arrival to El Salvador International Airport. Transfer to hotel. Lodging at San Salvador City. National Palace DAY 2: JIQUILISCO BAY - CACAO TOUR MONKEY TOUR (B, L) Today we will travel East towards Jiquilisco Bay, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It has a total area of 637 square km and 50 km of coastline. It includes mangrove forests, estuaries, sand bars, beaches, 27 islands of varying size, fresh water lagoons and seasonally flooded forests. It represents a transit point to at least 87 species of migratory birds. The coastal mangroves and estuaries help reduce the vulnerability of coastal communities and agricultural lands to natural disasters such as floods, helps stabilize the local climate, and serves as a nursery and refuge for a high diversity of ecological species of economical and aesthetic importance. Jiquilisco Bay also offers something that we all love: Chocolate! In Jiquilisco, the criollo type of Cacao is produced. Criollo is considered to be of the highest quality in the world. Travelers will visit the plantations, see, touch and taste the fruits on the trees and also participate in hands on activities such as opening the cacao fruit, moving the seeds in the patio, etc. For the monkey s tour, we will walk through a forest until we reach their home. After calling their names, the monkeys come down the trees and interact with the visitors. Lodging at Puerto Barillas Marina, Jiquilisco Bay. Monkey Tour Cacao fruit

27 DAY 3: HAWKSBILL SEA TURTLE TOUR (B, L) Today we will enjoy a Sea Turtle tour. Four species of sea turtles nest in El Salvador: Baule (leatherback turtle), Carey (hawksbill turtle), Golfina (olive ridley turtle) and Prieta (green turtle); all of them considered endangered species. The tour in Jiquilisco Bay will focus on the Hawksbill, one of the most endangered species in the world. For the Hawksbill, Jiquilisco Bay is the main nesting point on all the Eastern Pacific. We will enjoy a boat tour in Jiquilisco Bay, to learn about the Hawksbill Sea Turtle. Hawksbill turtles have helped keep our oceans healthy for millions of years. Today, the hawksbill is near extinction. They are captured and killed in fishing activities entangled in coastal gillnets (especially lobster gillnets) and shrimp trawls, and are victims of illegal blast fishing practices that also destroy the local ecosystem. Hawksbill eggs are collected for consumption and sale by poachers who live in regions of extreme poverty where the eggs are an important source of protein and income. Hawksbills also are the only sea turtle species collected for the shell (tortoise shell or bekko) by craftspeople, which turn them into combs, pennants, sunglasses and other trinkets. Other threats add to the problem, including pollution, large-scale oceanic nutrient shifts and global warming. This tour consist of capturing a turtle, observe how the biologist studies and measures it while the visitors are given an explanation, and then release the turtle back into the water. Sea Turtle tour Lodging at Puerto Barillas Marina, Jiquilisco Bay. DAY 4: AIRPORT ROATÁN (B, D) This morning our private transfer will take us to the airport for our flight to Roatán. Located between the islands of Útila and Guanaja, is the largest of Honduras' Bay Islands. The Island was formerly known as Ruatan and Rattan. Roatán is the largest of the Bay Islands, which are a part of Honduras, lying just over 30 miles from the northern coast of the Honduran mainland. Roatán is known around the world for its scuba diving. The reef surrounding the island attracts beautiful tropical fish and snorkelers alike. Dive attractions include sea walls, shipwrecks, a submerged airplane, and night diving. Sea turtles, dolphins, and whales swim in the waters of Roatán. Upon arrival, a shared transfer will take us to our hotel. Lodging at Roatán. Jiquilisco Bay Roatán

28 DAY 5: DOLPHIN ENCOUNTER ROATÁN (B, L, D) Today we will enjoy an amazing experience with dolphins learning about their behaviors.. The total actual tour is between 45 minutes to 1 hour. The first 8 minutes consists of a platform session where we will interact with the dolphins before entering the water (during this time you will also have a chance to take pictures with your camera). Then, we will place our cameras away. During the remaining time, we will be in the water getting foot push, dorsal fin rides, handshake, kiss, practice vocals and do other water behaviors with the dolphins. During this time, the photographer from the hotel will be taking pictures that will be optional to purchase once the activity is finished. Immediately following the 30 minute Dolphin Encounter, this activity allows you to swim and snorkel with our resident pod of dolphins on their terms, with no trained behaviors. You'll be captivated by their natural curiosity, intrigued by their whistles and clicks as they communicate with each other, and delighted to see mothers and their calves swimming side by side. After tour return to hotel. Lodging at Roatán. Dolphin encounter DAY 6: ROATÁN (B, L, D) Today we will enjoy a free day to have some fun at the beach.
