4 General Information Location and Geography The Lao People s Democratic Republic (Lao P.D.R), more commonly referred to as Laos, is located at the center of the Indochinese Peninsula, stretching 1,700 km from north to south. At its broadest point, the country spans some 500 km east to west while its narrowest point located just south of Vientiane, there are only 140 km separating Thailand from Vietnam. Laos has a total land area of 236,800 square kilometers characterized by three distinct regions : North, Central and South of Laos. The country s main geological features include low calciferous mountains, limestone karsts formations, the Xieng Khouang, Bolaven plateaus and the Mekong River Valley. The mountains and plateaus make up three-quarters of the total land area. Lao P.D.R. shares a 505 km border with China to the north to the border with Vietnam (to the east), a 1,835 km border with Thailand to the west, and a 236 km border with Myanmar to the northwest. The highest peak is Phou Bia reaching over 2,820 meter. History The first Lao kingdom, Lane Xang was founded in the 14 th century by King Fa Ngum after he conquered and unified the northern lands of Vientiane, including Luang Prabang, Xieng khouang and the Khorat Plateau on the northeasthern province in Thailand. Luang Prabang remained the capital of Lane Xang until King Phothisarat moved the Kingdom s administrative seat to Vientiane in Even after the capital moved to Vientiane, Luang Prabang remained the country s spiritual and religious center. The country s 4 The Central Provinces

5 first contact with western emissaries occurred in the mid 17 th century during the reign of King Surigna Vongsa. After the death of Surigna Vongsa in 1694 Lane Xang broke up into three separate Kingdoms: Vientiane, Champasak and Luang Prabang. Part of French Indochina during the 19 th - early 20 th century colonial period Laos achieved complete independence in 1975 with the founding of the Lao People s Democratic Republic. General Information Today Laos is comprises of 18 provinces. It is the least populated country in Southeast Asia, with nearly 6.7 milion inhabitants in 2014 or about 26 people per km 2. In comparison, Vietnam has a population density of 230 people per km 2, and Thailand 120. Roughly 85% of the population lives in rural areas. Despite a minimal number of population Laos has a tremendous ethnic diversity with 49 officially recognized ethnic groups speaking over 48 languages. The largest contributor to the gross domestic product (GDP) is agriculture which provides a living for 80% of the population. The principal crop is sticky rice but corn, tobacco, cotton and coffee are also grown. Raising livestock for domestic and regional consumption is also an important economic activity. Harvest of non-timber forest products such as resins, herbal medicine and forest foods for commercial and home use is also a very important contributor to the Lao economy and rural people s livelihoods. The primary national industries include hydropower, garment manufacture, agro-forestry, tourism, mining and production of some common consumer goods. The Central Provinces 5

Districts: Phonhong, Thoulakhom, Keo-Oudom, Kasi, Vang vieng, Feuang, Xanakham, Met, Hinheup Meun and Viengkham. Capital: Viengkham District. Vientiane Province The landscape in Vientiane Province varies from the flat, fertile alluvial plains of the Mekong River Valley to rugged limestone mountains in the eastern northern and western part of the province. Vientiane Province is well-known for its highest mountain peak in Laos (2,819m high Phou Bia). Outside of the main provincial towns, the countryside is a beautiful, lush green mosaic of rice paddies, tropical fruit trees, and jungle vegetation dotted with quaint villages where traditional architecture and lifestyles can be seen. Close to Vientiane Capital is the Ang Nam Ngum (Nam Ngum Reservoir) a picturesque inland lake formed by one of the country s major hydropower schemes (the Nam Ngum Dam) Boat trips on the reservoir are a popular daytrip from Vientiane Capital but for visitors with more time, an overnight stay at Ban Na Kheaun or Tha Heua is possible. On a southern corner of the reservoir is the large Dansavan Resort where you can gamble and play golf. Visit the Thoulakhom Zoo at Ban Keun to see a well-kept collection of local species. At Ban Bo in Thoulakhom District are large natural salt deposits that are processed and packaged into the common table condiment using traditional technologies. The small town of Vang Vieng (150 km north of the capital) is set in a dream like landscape of bizarre limestone mountain peaks and sheer cliffs with the Nam Song The Central Provinces 19

Because there are so many water bodies brimming with aquatic life, various types of prepared and preserved fish have become legendary in Vientiane Province. First is the heavily-salted, fermented fish known as pa daek that can be purchased along route No.13 near Hin Heup. The other are koy paa (sour and spicy minced fish salad), kaeng paa (fish soup) and neung paa (a delicious dish of steamed fish and fresh herbs) served at floating restaurants on the arteries of the Nam Ngum Reservoir near Thalad Village and Vang Vieng. At the organic farms in Vang Vieng you can also try mulberry shakes and purchase mulberry leaf tea, mulberry wine, jellies and jams. With so many water bodies and pleasant warm weather, Vientiane Province is a great place to get soaked during the Lao New Year or Pi Mai Lao celebrations in mid-april. The 2 km wide cliff looks down on the forests, rice fields, and villages below as well as across the valley to Pha Boua Mountain, but it takes a bit of a climb to reach the peak. The cliff s name is clouded in confusion. Local villagers had always called it Noi (Small) Cliff, while the national map labeled it Kang Cliff. In 1995, villagers moved closer to Pha Ngeun and started to more thoroughly explore it. They fell in love with the beauty offered by the monolith, and all agreed it should take on the name, Silver Cliff. Location: Cross the Nam song in the southern end of town at the Paradise Island Bridge to Ban Houay Nyae. Follow the dirt road for around 4 km until getting to Phone Ngeun Village. From here, hike up the trail to the top of Pha Ngeun. The Central Provinces 31

32 Bee Cliff Cave Complex The Bee Cliff cave Compex is located on the northern face of Pha Khongkhao Mountain southwest of town, the Bee Cliff Cave Complex consists of several caverns clustered together. The most popular is Tham Pha Pheung (Bee Cliff Cave), which is often called Tham Phou Thong. Others include Tiger Cave, Diamond Cave, and the Gold Mine Cave. The 70 meter long Bee Cliff/ Phou Thong Cave deceives its visitors with a small entrance leading to a 5 squire meter room with a 4 meter high ceiling and elephant head with a golden tint reflected from the dangling bee hives. The view looking back outside the cave reveals a scene of rice fields, green trees, and the Ka River snaking past the entrance. Inside, a water basin offers a fresh and clean bathing pool. Location: Cross the Nam song in the southern end of town at the Paradise Island Bridge to Ban Houay Nyae. Follow the dirt road for around a kilometer until you see the sign for the Bee Cliff Cave, and the trail leading south to the cliff. 32 The Central Provinces

33 Tham Khan Adventure and history await at Tham Khan (Silver Bowl Cave) just 3 km west of town. A hedgehog hunter discovered the cave with its 1.9 meter high sitting Buddha at the entrance. Archaeologists examined the cavern and turned up prehistoric knives, small spades, and axes as well as a khan or silver bowl for which the cave was named. Vientiane Province The 3 meter wide, 200 meter long cave sits at the foot of Oua Mountain and offers good access throughout. The daring can try to find the secret passage out it s adventurous but quite safe. Location: Cross the Nam song in the southern end of town at the Paradise Island Bridge to the Long Kouang Route past Ban Houay Nyae. At electric pole 18, look for a sign to Tham Khan, turn north, and follow the rugged road along Laeng Stream to the cave s entrance. The Central Provinces 33

34 Caves South of Vang Vieng Tham Chang Considered by many as Vang Vieng s most important cave, Tham Chang (or Jang) became the home for migrating people, who settled near the town s southern Meuang song Village to raise vegetables. The locals stumbled into the cavern during a civil war, while seeking refuge deep in the forest. Because its high location offered perfect views of Vang Vieng, the entire village moved there to sit out the war, and named their haven, Tham Chang (Hang Around Cave). Years later during the colonial era, the locals returned to cultivating the nearby fields and would bathe in the cave s basin, where the water was so cold they said it could freeze your legs to a firm stiffness. They then adjusted the cave s name to Tham Chang, which means unable to move, leaving locals no choice but to hang around. Location: Follow the river road south of Meuang song Village, pay the entrance fee at the gate of Vang Vieng Resort and cross the bridge over the Nam song to the steps leading up the cliff to Tham Chang. 34 The Central Provinces

35 Caves North of Vang Vieng Vientiane Province Ban Tham Xang Group Journey north of Vang Vieng to explore the Ban Tham Xang Group, a cluster of four caves just across the Nam song, with Tham Xang (Elephant Cave) at its gateway. A trail to the north winds to Tham Hoy (Shell Cave), named for Hoysang (Conch Shell), who protected his aunt from giants in this tunnel with no known end. Moving south along the canal, Tham Loup (Hole Cave) appears as a huge cleft created by Laos massive mythological elephant, Siho, to hide from his enemies. Further along, the 500 meter long Tham Nam (Water Cave) was once the source of an intricate wooden irrigation system. Location: Travel north of Vang Vieng on Route No.13 for about 14 km, and turn left (west) between KM 169 and KM 170. Follow the road and cross the river to reach the entrance. The Central Provinces 35

36 Ban Pha Thao Group Legend and history meet at this pair of caves just north of town. Tham Pha Thao (Thao Cliff Cave) once served as the home for locals, and remnants of their underground residences still exist amidst the silver and golden-color rock walls and formations. Legend has said that those who visit Tham Pha Thao will have good luck, which turns first-time visitors into annual returnees. Legend also shrouds nearby Tham Keo (Glass Cave) named after a beautiful young woman named Miss Keo, who looked like sparkling glass and once lived in the cave. Location: Travel north of Vang Vieng on Route No.13 for about 11 km, and turn west between KM 166 and KM 167. Signs to Tham Pha Thao and Tham Keo indicate the turnoff to a rough dirt road leading to a bridge crossing the Nam song and the entrance to Pha Thao Village and its cave group. 36 The Central Provinces

The park is predominantly limestone mountains clad with dense forest protecting the source of the Houay San stream. On the righthand stream (Houay Saphai), there are two notable waterfalls known as 38 The Central Provinces

39 Tad Houay Saphai 1 & 2. Drops of about 9m and 12m funnel and tumble through the steep rocky Saphai gorge. A larger multi-tiered waterfall can be seen up the Houay San stream. Villagers have constructed paths and offer a guide service to take you to these sites, as well as cave visits along the way. Half-day treks going to the waterfalls can be arranged from the visitor center. Vientiane Province Khoun Lang Cave This cave, decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone consists of a narrow entrance, widening to single large passageway of about 250m long, extending to four levels. Moisture percolating from the ceiling maintains an awesome array of shapes and patterns. Villagers have interpreted some of the features as evidence that this cave is the ancient abode of Khoun Lang; Nang Oua s suitor in the legend of Nang Oua - Thao Khou Lou; a romantic tragedy famous throughout both Laos and Thailand. At Ban Houay San, a 2.3km road ends at a car park about 350m from Khoun Lang Cave. From here, walking paths, including steps and footbridges, take you along the Houay San stream through rich jungle to the cave. Access is relatively easy, but some sections are quite steep. The cave floor is usually moist and can be extremely slippery, so stick to the constructed pathways. Please note that it is always dangerous to walk in any cave without a flashlight. Instead of walking straight up to the cave, you can also opt for an organized trekking program led by a village guide, which includes a visit to Khoun Lang Cave along with other Nature Park attractions including waterfalls and other caves. 40 The Story of Khoun Lang Nang Oua and Khoun Lou loved each other since childhood, and planned to get married when they were old enough. However, various situations arose to make it impossible for them to marry to one another. Thao Khoun Lang, who was of advanced age, and an ethnic chief of utmost social standing and influence, conspired with Nang Oua s mother to marry the young girl without her consent. The story progresses with Nang Oua, so revolted at the prospect of a forced marriage to Khoun Lang, and so distressed about not being able to be with her beloved Khoun Lou, and there fore that she ran away and hanged herself from a tree while Koun Lang was approaching her home, accompanied by his wedding procession. Koun Lang s procession was accompanied by a dowry of one hundred each of elephants, horses, buffaloes, and oxen as part of his payment to his bride s mother. This procession was carrying the supplies and all cultural accoutrements required for the wedding celebration. When Khoun Lang heard that Nang Oua had hanged herself, his wedding parade dispersed. Part of the parade continued with various offerings for her funeral, while others left the parade, leaving some of the animals in the dowry to escape or die along the road. The tragedy was completed with Thao Koun Lou, so distressed at the news of his beloved Nang Oua s death that he could not bear to continue his life without her, and joined her in death; cutting his own throat with his dagger. Meanwhile, Khoun Lang, a man of high prestige was so ashamed at being the cause of this tragedy that he could no longer face anyone at all, and was never seen again. It is not known what happened to him, but the people say that the earth had opened up and swallowed him in revenge of standing between two lovers. It is believed this cave now known as Khoun Lang Cave was where Khoun Lang prepared for his wedding, making the giant makbeng (ceremonial centerpiece for the soukhouan ceremony), as well as the large pile of rice to be used for his wedding feast. These are some of the items abandoned by him when he disappeared, and are said to have turned into stone features inside the cave, giving rise to the cave s name. 40 The Central Provinces

43 Vientiane Province Kaeng Nyui Waterfall Kaeng Nyui is a 30 meter waterfall situated on the eastern side of Vang Vieng town. Reaching the waterfall involves a walk along the Houay Nyui and Nam Lao streams past a number of cascades and a smaller waterfall called Kenlon falls. Kenlon has a drop of about 5 meters, into a lovely swimming pool about 9 meters in diameter. Villagers from Ban Naduang Village are the traditional owners of the site, and have constructed the paths following the stream to both waterfalls, small bridges and other facilities, as well as maintaining swimming holes, and a picnic area along the stream and in the surrounding nature reserve. They also manage the car park and own the foodstalls. Pick up some local delicacies here for a picnic alongside the stream. 45 Naduang Village Fleeing from the Ho (Haw) invasions of Xam Neua in northern Laos, Tai Maen and Tai Pua ethnic groups settled in Ban Meuang Song and Ban Viengkeo in what is now known as Vang Vieng town. From hunting trips up the Nam Lao stream, Pho Phaxai, a descendant of the people who had settled in the Vang Vieng area, found the Nam Lao valley (a bountiful hunting ground) and then moved in 1873 to establish a village of 18 households. Disease forced them to move in 1906, and then again in 1910, when the village divided into three villages. These three villages then amalgamated into one village in 1937, and was named Na Luang ( Na meaning field and Luang meaning large; indicating the size of the combined villages, as well as it being the gateway village for others further up the valley). This was then renamed to the similar sounding Naduang as villagers thought that the new name sounded more pleasant. Ban Naduang is currently a village of about 750 people, comprising a mix of about 60% Khmu (who moved into the area from Luang Prabang), and 40% Tai. The village economy is overwhelmingly based on ricefarming, and some families practice textile weaving. Villagers are working together to use the Kaeng Nyui waterfall as an additional source of income through community-based tourism as a means of providing incentive to conserve the environment, as well as raising funds to develop irrigation and other initiatives for their village. 46 Vang Vieng Temples Immerse yourself in Vang Vieng s culture by visiting the town s four Buddhist temples, each with its own distinct history and architecture, on a short walking or cycling tour of town. Begin your cultural adventure at Vat Mahathat in Ban Vang Vieng located in the town s north. Originally built in 1880 as Vat Siviengxong, the temple was moved to its present location shortly after and renamed Vat Don Hor before today s title of Vat Mahathat or simply called Vat That. Constructed with money donated by Lord Isan Outhaidesanasongkham, Vat That s original plans called for a three-room temple with a small stupa inside. However, as the building began, a man named Duangsi suggested to Lord Isan that the temple s 18 pillars be made of rock. Though Vat Mahathat, with its brick floor and crocodile and dog statues at the stair s base, suffered damage over the years, the temple was restored in the 1990s with roof ornaments added around the turn of the century. Just south of Vat Mahathat sits the 5,272 sqm, cobble stone Vat Kang in Savang Village. Constructed in 1900 under the patronage of Xieng Tii, Phiaphommaline, Meuan Souvanh, Mr Phoma and Mr Chanphenxay, Vat Kang today has 4 monks, 21 novices, and three nuns. Vat Sisoumang, in the southern end of Vang Vieng in Ban Viengkeo, was built in 1944 by a local named Chanthao. Upon his death, the temple was renamed Vat Thao Sao, before it was changed to Sisoumang Temple. Vat Meuang song (Vat Mixay) in Van Vieng s southernmost Ban Meuang song was built in 1889 by Ta Saeng Koum Mane, and was originally named Vat Khoua Phane. However, once the French colonialists left, the name was changed to its present Vat Meuang song. Note: Please dress appropriately when entering the vats. For more information on individual temples, please contact the Visitor Information Center staff. 46 The Central Provinces

Vientiane Capital In 1563, King Setthathilath made Vientiane (in Lao language Vieng Chan) the capital of the Kingdom of Lane Xang. The two most important temples of Vientiane Capital, Vat That Luang and Hor Phra Keo date back to that time. In 1827, Vientiane had been conquered and sacked by a Siamese army. For decades the town lay in ruins, until the French, at the beginning of their colonial reign rebuilt it. However, Vientiane Capital today does not feature Frenchinfluenced architecture to the same extent as Phnom Penh and Saigon. Instead there is a strong Thai influence. With just over half a million inhabitants, Vientiane is the smallest Capital in Southeast Asia (except for Bandar Seri Begawan of Brunei ). The Central Provinces 53

54 Tourist Sites That Luang Stupa (Great Sacred Stupa) The site of That Luang has been in use since the year 236 of the Buddhist Calendar (307BC). When the first governor of Vientiane, Phaya Chanthabouri Pasitthisack or Bourichan built a structure that looked like a kiln of about 9 meters high and 10 meters wide. The original stupa was built on the site in 1566 by King Saysetthathirath, and was restored in The golden stupa is 45 meters tall and is believed to contain a relic of the Lord Buddha. The gold centerpiece of this stupa echoes the curve of an elongated Lotus bud. Today it is the most important national cultural monument. 54 The Central Provinces

55 Patouxay (Victory Arch) The memorial monument, Patuxay, was built in 1957 and is perhaps the most prominent landmark in the city. It is situated on Lanexang Avenue. 121 National Protected Areas The Lao system of 20 National Protected Areas covers nearly 14% of the country and is recognized as one of the best designed protected areas systems in the world. With large tracts of tropical monsoon forest, diverse wildlife populations and bizarre karst limestone formations riddled with caves, Lao protected areas have an abundance of extraordinary things to see. Although most Lao protected areas are remote and difficult to reach, there are many existing opportunities for ecotourism activities such as trekking, rafting, bird watching and camping that allow you to experience first-hand the country s magnificent natural and cultural diversity. National Protected Areas From Vientiane Capital, the most accessible protected area offering a variety of ecotourism activities is Phou Khao Khouay, where you can trek, visit spectacular waterfalls and spend the night in an elephant observation tower on the edge of the park. In the provinces, visit Nam Ha in Luang Namtha for trekking, watch birds at the Pha Pho wetland in Champasak s Xe Pian NPA, trek Dong Phou Vieng in Savannakhet for a chance to see the beautiful Douc Langur. If you are interested in caves, don t miss the Phou Hin Poun NPA in central Khammouane Province. More activities are being developed in a number of other NPA s; be sure to check with the information staff for news on new ecotourism programs around the country. The Central Provinces 121
