MONTECITO The tiny seaside village of Montecito was discovered in the early 1900s by some of the most influential families in the United States. Soon, the wooded hills were dotted with magnificent estates such as marble palaces, consisting of picture-book Normandy castles, Italian palazzos, Cape Cod colonials, and regal English manors. 3 Santa Barbara Neighborhoods THE WATERFRONT The Spaniards who founded Santa Barbara in 1782 were soldiers and priests, not seafaring men. Perhaps that is why no provision was made for a harbor. The waterfront, extending 3.6 miles from Shoreline Park to the Bird Refuge, offered no natural, safe anchorage. Early-day mariners used to drop anchor a mile offshore, ready to slip their cables and head for the open sea if foul weather threatened. The ocean used to cover what today is the City College football field, known as La Playa Stadium. Today the Santa Barbara Waterfront stretches from the Harbor across from Santa Barbara City College along Cabrillo Boulevard past Stearn s Wharf to East Beach, which is near the Santa Barbara Zoo and Bird Refuge. There are Hotels and Motels located along the Waterfront, behind which are charming homes, duplexes, triplexes and apartment buildings. THE MESA The Mesa, a Spanish word meaning table, is located on the bluffs just beyond the harbor and extends from the ocean up to the top of the hill. It features both tract and custom homes, as well as luxury homes many with ocean and/or city views. City weather records show that the Mesa s winter temperatures are 10 to 12 degrees warmer than downtown, and 10 to 12 degrees cooler in the summer. 5

4 Santa Barbara Neighborhoods HOPE RANCH As you pass through the gate and under the handsome, filigreed sign suspended across Las Palmas Drive, you enter another world - Hope Ranch. Towering palms, planted in the early 1900s, line the main boulevard. It s common to see the locals jogging or riding along private trails, or golfing on a manicured green at the La Cumbre Country Club. Incorporated in 1924, the Hope Ranch Park Homes Association watches over this elite residential area with luxury estates, charming ranch and contemporary style homes. Membership in the association is automatic upon purchasing a home and brings many privileges: private beach, bridle paths, tennis courts, and the use of the Hope Ranch Riding Trails Association. THE RIVIERA Bridging a two-mile span which separates Mission and Sycamore Canyons, the Riviera, named for its resemblance to slopes along the Mediterranean coasts of France and Italy, rises above the city. 5 Santa Barbara Neighborhoods UPPER EAST Some of the city s earliest and finest homes were built here and it is still one of the lowest density zoned areas in the downtown/city area that has preserved the fine estate and single family home nature of the area. The neighborhood encompasses generally larger lots than most city centric locations, and has sizeable custom homes and wide streets. The architecture is varied, and includes: Craftsman, Spanish Colonia Revival, Victorian, and Mission Revival style homes. Some Classic California Ranch, along with more contemporary interpretations of Mediterranean style and a few Modernistic homes create this unique environment. THE WESTSIDE The Westside was originally an open grazing range and farmland. Today this area is a solidly populated neighborhood with a diversity of home sizes and styles all of which have easy access to downtown Santa Barbara. 7

6 Santa Barbara Neighborhoods SAN ROQUE Few residential neighborhoods of Santa Barbara can boast the rich historical background of the San Roque and Rutherford Park areas. Originally an open expanse of treeless grassland, sloping up to the foothills it is a built-up suburb admired for its sweeping curved streets, luxuriant landscaping, and harmonious blend of many architectural themes - Spanish Colonial, English Tudor, French Normandy, California Redwood, Italian and American Colonial. Most of the homes were built after San Roque features older, custom homes with charm. SAMARKAND Samarkand means the land of heart s desire in Persian. The name was first applied in 1920 to a deluxe Persian style hotel, formerly a boy s school. As the dominating landmark of a hilly, elevated neighborhood, The Samarkand gave its name to this neighborhood of delightful homes that range from small cottages to larger almost estate-style residences. It is a delightful area of charming homes. GOLETA Goleta is a well-established residential area with an abundance of condominiums and housing developments offering a variety of affordable living. It is home to the University of California at Santa Barbara (U.C.S.B), and many technology companies. Some residences have beach access and others in the foothills enjoy views of the oceans and mountains. There are also several citrus and avocado ranches, two excellent golf courses, one of which is on the ocean bluffs, and Dos Pueblos high school that features an engineering academy. SAN MARCOS PASS/PAINTED CAVE San Marcos Pass is at the top of the pass (Hwy 154) just 15 minutes from town, away from the hustle and bustle of the town. Several small communities offer views, seclusion, and a chance for a rural lifestyle. Second homes in this area, on National Forest leased land, can also be purchased. 8

10 SHOPPING Santa Barbara Shopping PASEO NUEVO In the Paseo Nuevo mall you ll discover a picturesque world of Spanish-style courtyards, winding paseos, gently flowing fountains and lush tropical flowers. Located next to the historic Arlington Theater, the Public Market is a popular spot to eat dinner or grab ice cream before or after a show. This LEED certified building opened in COAST VILLAGE ROAD Also known as Lower Village, Coast Village Road is located just South of Santa Barbara in Montecito. In close proximity to Butterfly Beach, Coast Village Road is a bustling community with hotels, restaurants, boutiques and businesses. UPPER VILLAGE Montecito s Upper Village is located at the intersection of East Valley Road and San Ysidro Road. 12 Arts & Entertainment The Music Academy of the West is a music conservatory located in Montecito, California, United States, near Santa Barbara. Every year, it hosts an eight-week summer music festival for the community highlighted by concerts and workshops directed by famous composers, conductors, and artists. Its vocal program has been directed by Marilyn Horne since The festival hosts 140 pre-professional musicians annually, all of whom receive merit-based full scholarships. Programs of study include Vocal Piano, Voice, Collaborative Piano, Solo Piano, and Instrumental. In 2014, the Music Academy of the West began an educational partnership with the New York Philharmonic. Under the collaboration, Music Director Alan Gilbert and orchestra members maintain residencies in Santa Barbara during parts of the festival, and selected Music Academy fellows train with orchestra members in Santa Barbara and New York City. The Music Academy of the West was founded in 1947 by Southern California arts patrons and musicians, including soprano Lotte Lehmann and conductor Otto Klemperer. 13 Arts & Entertainment UCSB ARTS & LECTURES Founded in 1959, UCSB Arts & Lectures is the largest and most influential arts and lectures organization between Los Angeles and San Francisco. This nationally recognized, award-winning program brings exceptional cultural and artistic experiences to Santa Barbara with lively and varied programming featuring world-class performing artists and big thinkers. A&L annually presents more than a hundred events, ranging from concerts, dance and theater performances to talks by groundbreaking authors, comedy shows and film series at UC Santa Barbara and area venues. Past A&L luminaries have included cellist Yo-Yo Ma, author/historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, graphic novelist Neil Gaiman, filmmaker Ken Burns, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, poet Mary Oliver and many more. With a mission to educate, entertain and inspire, Arts & Lectures also offers an exciting array of educational outreach programs for local students and the greater community. The theater was originally built as an opera house, in a refurbished adobe school building, by Italian immigrant José Lobero in Located downtown at the corner of Anacapa and Canon Perdido streets, the Lobero Theatre is registered as a California Historical Landmark The Lobero was founded in By the early 1920s, the old opera house was becoming dilapidated and was rebuilt as a theater, to Spanish Colonial Revival style designs by architects George Washington Smith and Lutah Maria Riggs. The client was the Drama Branch of the Community Arts Association. The Lobero Theater opened in August 1924, during a period in which civic groups in Santa Barbara were beginning to unify the town s architectural look around a Spanish Colonial style. The theatre continues to host arts and cultural events on 250 or more days per year. Because of its live acoustics and relatively small size it is particularly suited to chamber music. 14 Arts & Entertainment THE SANTA BARBARA MUSEUM OF ART (SBMA) is an art museum located in downtown Santa Barbara. Founded in 1941, it is home to both permanent and special collections, the former of which includes Asian, American, and European art that spans 4,000 years from ancient to modern. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art opened to the public on June 5, 1941, in a building that was at one time the Santa Barbara Post Office ( ). Chicago architect David Adler simplified the building s façade and created the Museum s galleries. The newly renovated Park Wing Entrance and Luria Activities Center opened in June Over its history the Museum has expanded with the addition of the Stanley R. McCormick Gallery in 1942 and the Sterling and Preston Morton Galleries in Significant expansions came when the Alice Keck Park Wing opened to the public in 1985 and the Jean and Austin H. WEBSITE: sbma.net THE SANTA BARBARA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY Founded in 1916, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History reconnects more than 150,000 people each year (including their 5,700 members) to nature indoors and outdoors. Uniquely nestled in nature, the Museum is located along Mission Creek in the Mission Canyon area. The Museum has ten indoor exhibit halls focusing on regional natural history including astronomy, birds, insects, geology, mammals, marine life, paleontology, plant life, and the Chumash Indians. 15 The Santa Ynez Valley The serene Santa Ynez Valley is in northern Santa Barbara County, a two-hour drive from Los Angeles and only 30 minutes northwest of Santa Barbara. The rare eastwest California valley is bordered by the Santa Ynez Mountain Range to the south and the San Rafael Mountain Range to the north. Either of two routes from Santa Barbara take you to the valley: a coastal trip up Highway 101 through the historical Gaviota Pass, or the San Marcos Pass and Cachuma Lake route via scenic Highway 154. Five distinctive communities encompass the 100 square mile valley of less than 25,000 residents: the highly noted Danish heritage city of Solvang, home to Old Mission Santa Ines and the Alisal Guest Ranch, the western township of Santa Ynez, Victorian influenced communities of Los Olivos and Ballard and the famed Pea Soup Andersen s road stop city of Buellton. Santa Ynez is an area of majestic beauty and tranquility with rolling hills profoundly populated with ancient oaks. Once primarily recognized as the Arabian horse capital of the United States the valley now houses a myriad of equine breeds, sprawling horse ranches, cattle ranches, Alpaca farms, numerous vineyards and wineries, row crop farming, Lavender farms, olive orchards and other agriculture activities. The mild winters and warm summers with cool evenings are affected by coastal air currents. On a typical winter day the temperature is in the 50 s and about 30 degrees at night, with summer days in the 90 s and 60 s at night. 16 Santa Ynez Shopping SOLVANG Located 35 miles from Santa Barbara is the Danish Village of Solvang, or Little Denmark. Sunset Magazine placed Solvang among their 10 Most Beautiful Small Towns in the Western United States. This town that was founded in 1911 by Danish Immigrants is now a popular, vibrant area for shopping, dining and wine tasting. SANTA YNEZ In the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley is the township of Santa Ynez, where the street is lined with building facades remenicient of an old Western town. Inside the buildings are modern and sophisticated shops and restaurants offering a variety of cuisine. Adjacent to the township is the Chumash Casino Resort which offers a hotel, live entertainment and gaming. LOS OLIVOS The historic town of Los Olivos is located in the Santa Ynez Valley, close to Highway 101. Los Olivos is a hub for wine tasting, and boasts excellent retaurants along with unique shops and art galleries. 18

17 Ojai A magnet for artists, musicians, and health enthusiasts, Ojai is an idyllic town with oakshaded paths, beautiful parks, art galleries, golf courses, and spas. It gained notoriety when the area was filmed to represent Shangri-La in the classic movie, The Last Horizon. Surrounded by mountains that create an evening glow that locals refer to as the pink moment, Ojai is the place to gear down and relax, to peruse art galleries, shop and dine, and head to what the locals call The Arcade, a section of Ojai Avenue in the core of the town. A visit to Libbey Park in downtown Ojai is a must. Majestic oaks surround a children s playground and there are paths for hiking and picnic areas. The Ojai Valley Trail is a great place to meet the locals and bicycle, walk or jog. It has a parallel path for horses and runs more than nine miles. Make sure you check the Ojai events calendar before you plan your visit because the town has some exceptional events throughout the year. The line-up includes the Ojai Music Festival at the Libbey Bowl Amphitheater and the Ojai Wine Festival at nearby Lake Casitas in June, and the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament in late April. Golfers can tee up at exceptional courses at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa and Soule Park, an affordable public course on the outskirts of town. 19
