Tour Itinerary Day 1 Rio de Janeiro Day 2 Christ the Redeemer Arrival On arrival in Rio de Janeiro, you will be met by a Travel The Unknown representative and transferred to your hotel. Overnight in Rio de Janeiro. --Rio de Janeiro is the second-largest city in Brazil by population, and the sixth-largest by this measure in the Americas. The city was given its name by Portuguese navigators in 1501, founded in 1565, and became the capital of the colony in Surrounded by lush forest and renowned for its cultural diversity, a section of the city has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO under the Cultural Landscape category. Rio de Janeiro N/A Spend the day touring the city of Rio de Janeiro. Key sights will include the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Aterro do Flamengo park. Continue to the neighbourhood of Urca, where you will take a cable-car up to Morro da Urca and onwards to Sugar Loaf Mountain to enjoy spectacular views over the city. Then, visit the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer, before stopping at Mário Filho Stadium, better known as the Maracanã, and the nearby Sambódromo. Overnight in Rio de Janeiro. --Metropolitan Cathedral is a church located in the centre of Rio de Janeiro. Modelled by Edgar Fonseca in a modern style influenced by Mayan pyramid architecture, the cathedral is dedicated to the patron saint of the city, Saint Sebastian. Built between 1964 and 1997, the building stands at a height of 75 metres and can contain roughly 25,000 people. BL Aterro de Flamingo is the largest public park in Rio de Janeiro, encompassing roughly 296 acres (120 hectares). Completed in 1965, it was designed by Lota de Macedo Soares and contains several recreational areas. ID P a g e 3
Sugar Loaf Mountain is a 395-metre conical peak overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro. The peak received its name from its shape, said to resemble a loaf of refined sugar, and is a widely recognized landmark for the city. The mountain, along with the Urca Hill site, forms a protected monument designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Christ the Redeemer is a large Art-Deco style statue of Jesus Christ situated atop the summit of Mount Corcovado. Commissioned by the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro in 1921, it was completed ten years later. The statue stands at 30 metres tall, with a wingspan of 28 metres where its arms are outstretched. It is the largest statue of its style in the world. Mario Filho Stadium, also known as the Maracanã, is a football stadium located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Opened in 1950 as the largest stadium by capacity in the world, the Maracanã was built to host the FIFA World Cup. Named after journalist Mário Filho, the stadium receives its popular name from the Maracanã River that runs nearby. Aside from football, the stadium has also hosted other sports and music events since its completion. The Sambódromo is a parade area built in the city of Rio de Janeiro for the Rio Carnival celebrations and ensuing samba school competitions that form part of the parade. Commissioned in 1983, it was designed by renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer. It has a capacity of 90,000 and consists of 700 metres of road with grandstands placed on either side of the street. Day 3 Botanical Gardens Rio de Janeiro Today, visit one of Brazil's most impressive botanical gardens, the Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro, which was created in the 19th century. Located in the heart of the buzzing metropolis, these lush, spacious gardens are an oasis of calm with an astonishing array of both native and foreign plant species (about 6,200 in all), some of which grow to gigantic proportions in this ecological paradise. Tamarins (small omnivores related to monkeys) and a myriad of colourful bird species thrive amongst the flamboyant vegetation. The tour proceeds on foot around the park, revealing a rich historical and cultural heritage, such as the old gunpowder factory and the Solar da Imperatriz, home to the National School of Tropical Botany, the first of its kind in Latin America. --The Botanical Gardens are located in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Commissioned by King John VI of Portugal in 1808 and opened to the public in 1822, the gardens are comprised of numerous greenhouses and contain some 8,000 species of plants, including 600 orchid species. The gardens are designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and also contain a research institute on botanical studies. B ID P a g e 4
Day 4 Manaus Rio de Janeiro - Manaus Transfer to the airport for your flight to Manaus. On arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. Then, embark on a city tour of Manaus, visiting the renowned Teatro Amazonas opera house, the bustling Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market and the historic city centre. Overnight in Manaus. --Often referred to as the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon, Manaus is the capital city of the Amazonas region in northern Brazil, located on the banks of the Negro River. In 1699, the first settlement was built in this area by Captain Francisco da Motta Falcão. It is the largest city in the state, and is enveloped by large swathes of rainforest. B Manaus' Teatro Amazonas, in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, is a beautiful opera house built in 1884 as an attempt to emulate the lavish theatres of Europe. This grand architectural treasure combined roofing from Alsace, furniture from Paris, marble from Italy and steel from England, as well as 198 chandeliers and a dome covered with 36,000 decorated ceramic tiles painted in the colours of the Brazillian flag, to provide a Reinaissance-inspired historical and cultural landmark. Today, Teatro Amazonas is the venue for the Amazonas Philharmonic, the annual Amazonas Opera Festival and the Amazonas Film Festival. It has endured a troubled history as a result of Manaus' previous poverty, but has now been resurrected to fulfill its duties of gracing Brazilians and international visitors with unforgettable performances. Day 5 Meeting of the Waters Manaus - Amazon Rainforest You have an early start today, as you embark on your Amazon adventure! The journey to your remote lodge takes approximately three hours by speed boat and mini-van. En route, you will stop to observe the magnificent Meeting of the Waters. On arrival at the lodge, you will be greeted with a welcome drink and exotic fruits, then lunch, comprising regional and international dishes. In the afternoon, you will embark on a canoe trip of the igarapés (Amazonian creeks) and igapós (flooded forest). You may swim in the Amazon River during this excursion, and may be lucky enough to spot the pink river dolphins who reside here. Return to the lodge for dinner then take a guided evening walk to observe frogs, birds and caymans. Overnight at the lodge. Please note: The lodge has a number of activities available to guests, which may change depending on the season. The activities listed are intended as a guideline only. --A rare and fascinating phenomenon, the Meeting of the Waters in the Amazon Rainforest refers to the point at which the dark Negro River meets the muddy brown Solimões River, however due to their distinct temperatures, speeds and water densities, the rivers do not mix. This creates a situation in which rivers of different colours flow parallel to each other, with a clearly defined line showing their separation. ID P a g e 5
The world's largest tropical rainforest, containing thousands of rivers and a large fraction of the world's wildlife species, the Amazon Rainforest covers much of South America, including 40% of Brazil total area, and large parts of Colombia and Peru. Its most notable river is the powerful Amazon River, regarded as the largest drainage system in the world based on volume of flow and area of basin. With high rainfall, humidity, and temperatures, the rainforest is home to a rich array of flora and fauna, many still unrecorded by science. This includes jaguar, manatee, tapir, various rodents and monkeys, as well as myrtle and rosewood trees. Since the rainforest is particularly sensitive to destruction, including human enroachment, exploitation and deforestation, there have recently been increased efforts by governments and international bodies to protect this highly valuable region. Day 6 Amazon Rainforest Day 7 Amazon Rainforest Amazon Rainforest Early in the morning, depart for a sunrise excursion to witness the transformation of the sky and listen to the sounds of the waking birds (guides will have binoculars for you to use). Enjoy a breakfast with typical fruits and regional food. Depart for a jungle hike, during which your expert guide will introduce you to the wildlife of the Amazon, pointing out plants and describing their uses, as many are edible or medicinal. Return to the lodge for lunch. Later in the afternoon, board a motorboat to fish and learn more about the infamous piranha, as well as other Amazonian fish native to the river. Return to the lodge while enjoying the sunset from the boat. Dinner will be provided from the fish you caught earlier in the afternoon. Following dinner, a guide will offer an informal lecture regarding everyday life in the Amazon, and the legends, traditions and culture of the region. Overnight at the lodge. Amazon Rainforest After breakfast, depart the lodge for a hike, followed by a stop in a scenic area of the forest for lunch (regional cuisine baked over a fire) and subsequently rest in hammocks, as the natives do. In the afternoon, visit a local native house and learn from the inhabitants about their fascinating culture. A native will share his knowledge of the traditional medicinal plants and demonstrate how to prepare manioc flour, one of the region's main economic resources. Return to the lodge and enjoy your final dinner in the Amazon. Overnight at the lodge. ID P a g e 6
Day 8 Cuiabá Day 9 Amazon Rainforest - Cuiabá After an early breakfast, transfer to Manaus Airport for a flight to Cuiabá (may include one connection). En route to the airport, stop at the Pirarucu Floating Dock to see the giant pirarucu fish (also known as arapaima), which reach up to 3 metres long and 200 kg. You will have a chance to feed the fish and observe their impressive strength. On arrival at Cuiabá Airport, you will be met by a local guide and transferred to your hotel. Overnight in Cuiabá. --Capital of the central Brazilian state Mato Grosso, Cuiabá is knowns as the gateway to the wetlands of the northern Pantanal. This bustling, rapidly-developing city was founded in 1719 by gold prospectors and pioneers from São Paolo, and today many of its colonial villas nestle amongst modern skyscrapers. At its heart is the tree-lined Republic Square and the stunning Catedral Basílica do Senhor Bom Jesus. Cuiabá - Porto Jofre Today, you will be transferred from your hotel in Cuiabá to the lodge in Porto Jofre. En route, there will opportunities to stop for photos. Porto Jofre Day 10 B Please note: The order of stays in Porto Jofre and the Pantanal may vary. --Located on the Cuiabá River, Porto Jofre is within the UNESCO-protected nature reserve of the Pantanal, which is home to thousands of animal and plant species. Most notable to Porto Jofre are the elusive jaguars, with up to 70 of these majestic big cats prowling the forests and river banks. In recent years, several conservation projects to preserve and increase the jaguar population have developed, making Porto Jofre an excellent place to see these animals in their natural environment, although sightings can never be guaranteed! Porto Jofre Your time in Porto Jofre is all about attempting to spot the elusive jaguar, so today, you will embark on two half-day river safaris to maximise your chances. Porto Jofre river safari ID P a g e 7
Day 11 Porto Jofre After breakfast, embark on a half-day river safari on the waterways of the Pantanal as your attempts to spot jaguars continue. After lunch, you have your final half-day river safari. --- Porto Jofre jaguar Day 12 Pantanal Day 13 Porto Jofre - northern Pantanal lodge After breakfast, transfer to Araras Eco Lodge and check in. There will be an introductory walking tour and a presentation on the surroundings, environmental concerns and conservation projects. After dinner, take a night walk to experience the sights and sounds of the Pantanal after darkness falls. --Regarded as the world's largest tropical wetlands, the Pantanal is home to hundreds of species of birds and mammals, including scarlet macaws, jaguars and caimans. Located in the Mato Grosso do Sul state in western Brazil, the Pantanal's open marshes enable easy sightings of its rich wildlife in their natural environment. Still considered a hidden gem in Brazil and with very few inhabitants outside the main gateway cities of Cuiabá and Campo Grande, the wildlife is able to live freely and safely, supported by sustainable conservation between ecotourism and landowners. Northern Pantanal After breakfast, take a photo safari and canoeing excursion on the waterways surrounding the lodge, keeping your eyes peeled at all times for wildlife including capybara, caiman, monkeys and iguanas. After lunch, hike to the 25 m / 82 ft high Howler Monkey Tower in time for a spectacular sunset. Enjoy dinner at the lodge then take a night drive, during which you may spot tapir, tarantula and giant anteater, to name a few. --- Pantanal capybara ID P a g e 8
Day 14 Northern Pantanal On your final full day in the Pantanal, after breakfast hike the Rondon trail to the 12 m / 40 ft high Tuiuiu Tower, where it is possible to see the nest of a jabiru (a large stork endemic to the area). After lunch, go horse riding (2-3 hours) through the grazing fields, woods and flood lands. Enjoy a final dinner at the lodge then sit by the fire to reflect on your experiences or attend a presentation about the Pantanal and lodge. Pantanal - horse Please note: Guests are asked to always be quiet and respectful of nature when wildlifespotting in the Pantanal, but particularly when viewing the jabiru's nest from Tuiuiu Tower. riding Day 15 Northern Pantanal - Rio de Janeiro Wake up before dawn for a sunrise walk and enjoy the early-morning sights and sounds of the Pantanal. Check out after breakfast then transfer back to Cuiabá and fly to Rio de Janeiro for your final night in Brazil. Overnight in Rio de Janeiro. B Pantanal sunrise Day 16 Return to Rio and departure Today you will be transferred back to Rio de Janeiro International Airport for your departure flight.
