Overnight in Rio De Janeiro. Rio de Janeiro is the second-largest city in razil by population, and the sixth-largest by this measure in the Americas. The city was given its name by Portuguese navigators in 1501, founded in 1565, and became the capital of the colony in Surrounded by lush forest and renowned for its cultural diversity, a section of the city has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO under the Cultural Landscape category. D Day 2 Rio De Janeiro Meals Christ the Redeemer Spend the day touring the city of Rio De Janeiro. Key sights will include the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Aterro do Flamengo. Continue to the neighbourhood of Urca, where you will take a cable-car up Morro da Urca to the peak of Corcovado, where you can enjoy views over the city. Later, visit the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer, before stopping at Mário Filho Stadium and Sambódromo. Overnight in Rio De Janeiro. Metropolitan Cathedral is a church located in the centre of Rio de Janeiro. Modelled by Edgar Fonseca in a modern style influenced by Mayan pyramid architecture, the cathedral is dedicated to the patron saint of the city, Saint Sebastian. uilt between 1964 and 1997, the building stands at a height of 75 metres and can contain roughly 25,000 people. Aterro de Flamingo is the largest public park in Rio de Janeiro, encompassing roughly 296 acres (120 hectares). Well-known for its traditional architecture and proximity to Sugar Loaf Mountain, the neighbourhood began in the 1920s as part of an urban development project. Morro da Urca is a hill located in Rio de Janeiro, close to Sugar Loaf Mountain. oth peaks together form the Sugarloaf Mountain and Urca Hill Monument, a protected monument designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Corcovado is a 704-metre high mountain located in the central part of Rio de Janeiro city. The mountain received its name, Portuguese for hunchback, from its curved slope. The mountain is considered one of the most recognisable landmarks of the city due to its shape and prominent statue of Christ the Redeemer. Christ the Redeemer is a large Art-Deco style statue of Jesus Christ situated atop the summit of Mount Corcovado. Commissioned by the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro in 1921, it was completed ten years later. The statue stands at 30 metres tall, with a wingspan of 28 metres where its arms are outstretched. It is the largest statue of its style in the world. Mario Filho Stadium, also known as the Maracanã, is a football stadium located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Opened in 1950 as the largest stadium by capacity in the world, the Maracanã was built to host the FIFA World Cup. Named after journalist Mário Filho, the stadium receives its popular name from the Maracanã River that runs nearby. Aside from football, the stadium has also hosted other sports and music events since its completion. The Sambódromo is a parade area built in the city of Rio de Janeiro for the Rio Carnival celebrations and ensuing samba school competitions that form part of the parade. Commissioned in 1983, it was designed by renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer. It has a capacity of 90,000 and consists of 700 metres of road with grandstands placed on either side of the street. Day 3 Rio De Janeiro Meals Rio de Janeiro Take a walking tour of Rio's Santa Teresa Neighbourhood, where you will visit the Morrinho Project. Travel to the Pereira da Silva, stopping on the way at the viewpoints of Guanabara ay and Sugar Loaf Mountain. Later, visit Grande Rio to learn more about the world-famous Rio Carnival. Overnight in Rio De Janeiro. Morrinho Project is a sociocultural project located in the Laranjeiras neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro, replicating a typical favela, a low-income neighbourhood, as would be found in the area. The project was started in 1998 by a group of young people living in the neighbourhood as a pastime to recreate their daily lives, and has grown to international renown. At only 450 metres squared, the project, whose name translates to Little Hill, is formed entirely out of bricks, and is populated by toy automobiles and LEGO figurines. Pereira da Silva is a favela, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is most well-known for the Morrinho Project, a sociocultural recreational project started by its younger residents. 5 CLASSIC RAZIL - RETIRED 03/07/18 Guanabara ay is a bay of the Atlantic Ocean in southeastern razil, on whose southwest shore the city of Rio de Janeiro is located. At 31 kilometres in length, the bay s entrance measures 1.6 kilometres. It was discovered in 1502, and originally named after Rio de Janeiro. Sugar Loaf Mountain is a 395 metre conical peak overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro. The peak received its name from its shape, said to resemble a loaf of refined sugar, and is a widely recognized landmark for the city. The mountain, along with the Urca Hill site, forms a protected monument designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Grande Rio is the second largest metropolitan area in razil and the third largest in South America. First defined in 1974, it contains the city of Rio de Janeiro, and is considered to be the centre of razil s cultural and economic elements. It is also the second-most important industrial area in razil, after Sao Paulo. Day 4 Rio De Janeiro - Iguaçu Meals Transfer to the airport for flight to Iguaçu. Following your arrival, the rest of the day will be spent touring the Iguaçu falls (from the razilian side). Travel by foot to a panoramic viewpoint over the falls, before taking a glass elevator up the cliff face for a vista over the upper falls. Overnight in Iguaçu. Day 5 Iguaçu Meals Venture across Tancredo Neves ridge into Argentina. Spend the day in Iguaçu National Park where you will venture to the cascades of Devil's Throat. Later, follow the Sendero Yacaratía trail through the rainforest to Puerto Macuco, where you will travel by boat along Iguaçu River. Highlights will include views of Tres Mosqueteros Waterfall and San Martin Waterfall. Spend the evening visiting the Guarani-Mbya community, where you will enjoy ceremonial dancing, local food and a tobacco ritual. Overnight in Iguaçu. Devil's Throat is one of 275 waterfalls found at Iguazú Falls, and is the tallest of the falls. The drop measures 80 metres, and contains 14 separate systems within it. Sendero Yacaratía is the portion of the Iguaçu site located on the Argentinian side of the border, within which two-thirds of the site s waterfalls are located. It contains a boardwalk on which visitors can walk close to the falls. Tres Mosqueteros Waterfall is a collection of three waterfalls located on the Argentinian side of the Iguaçu Falls. San Martin Waterfall is a waterfall located at the Iguazu Falls site, directly after the Devil s Throat Waterfall. ID P a g e 4

The area was only recently recovered in part by native locals after a long history of colonisation. The locals farm and raise animals on the land, and create and sell handicrafts to supplement their income. Day 6 Iguaçu - Jesuit Missions Meals Drive through picturesque countryside and tea plantations to the Jesuit Missions. Stop en route for a tour of an open-cast gemstone mine. Spend the rest of the day in the region of the Guarani Republic, where you will visit the ruins of Jesuit Mission, San Ignacio Mini. Overnight in Iguaçu. San Ignacio Miní is a 17th century Jesuit mission complex. The remains still display the unique mixture of Spanish baroque architecture and traditional Guarani influences. The Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos are made up of six separate towns. They were founded as reductions, meaning settlements of Christianised Indians, by the Jesuits in the 17th and 18th century. They combine Catholic architecture with local tradition and provide a living heritage of Chiquitos. The six missions are collectively recognised as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Guarni Republic referred to an area also known as the Jesuitic Republic of Paraguay, created from 1609 and lasting until the Jesuits expulsion from razil in It was comprised of 30 villages in razil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It remains an important cultural touchstone in razilian imagination. Day 7 Iguaçu - Manaus Meals Manaus Drive to the airport for your flight to Manaus. On arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. Overnight in Manaus. Often referred to as the gateway to the razilian Amazon, Manaus is the capital city of the Amazonas region in northern razil, located on the banks of the Negro River. In 1699, the first settlement was built in this area by Captain Francisco da Motta Falcão. It is the largest city in the state, and is enveloped by large swathes of rainforest. Day 8 Amazon Meals Today you will be transferred to your accommodation in the Amazon (100km south of Manaus). On arrival, you will check-in to the hotel. Overnight in the Amazon. Salvador is the fourth-largest city in razil, and the capital of the state of ahia. First founded in 1549 by Portuguese explorers as razil's first capital, it contains several significant historical sites from Portuguese colonisation, and as a result contains sections that have been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Ribeira is a city located in the Lower City area of the city of Salvador. It is well-known for its ice cream shop, as well as its excellent waterside views and bars. Day 13 Salvador Meals Salvador Spend the morning on an African Heritage tour, where you will learn more about local customs, religion and culture. Highlights will include Candomble Temple, San Joaquin and Pelourinho. Enjoy an folklore show in Pelourinho, which will feature many Afro-razilian traditions. Overnight in Salvador. Candomblé Temple is an Afro-razillian temple located in the city of Salvador. The temple is used for Candomblé worship, a specific religious practice formed in Salvador at the beginning of the 19th century, originating among slaves. The tradition is oral in nature, and is rich in vibrant ceremonies involving song and dance. San Joaquin is a municipality in the city of Salvador. It is known for its local market, featuring both food, clothing, and handicrafts. Pelourinho is the historic centre of the city of Salvador, and has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Located in the western area of the city it is renowned for its adherence to its original 16th-century building plan, with architecture and historical remnants from the 17th-19th centuries.
