Accommodations: Hotel Clio Court Hakata Day 3 November 13 th, 2018 Tuesday Fukuoka-Hakata After breakfast, please meet your guide in the lobby by 9:00am as we are off on a full day of touring. The morning begins with a visit to Ohori Park, formerly the outer moat for Fukuoka Castle which was built over an inlet on Hakata Bay, situated in the center of Fukuoka City. It was established as a prefectural park in 1927, modeled after the garden style of China s West Lake, for the citizens of Fukuoka to use as a place of rest. Ohori is the Japanese word for moat; certainly, a fitting name for the park given its pond s history as an integral part of the Fukuoka Castle s moat system. Kuroda Nagamasa, once the presiding feudal lord over the prefecture, chose to integrate the pond into the system after reclaiming the northern half of a cove facing Hakata Bay. The nearby Japanese Garden at Ohori Park, constructed in 1984 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the park. Surrounded by white plaster walls mixed with wood, the garden area stretches out to 12,000 square meters. It is an elegant place with a large, wide pond complete with flowing streams and small hills and a traditional dry landscape garden. A traditional tea room complete with its own garden can also be found here, which is the perfect spot for viewing autumn leaves. From here we are off to the Hakata Doll Hall Shogetsudo, with over 600 items on display, ranging from works by young artists to master craftsmen. Hakata Doll is one of most beautiful and famous arts and crafts in Japan, well-known throughout the world. If you are looking for a unique souvenir from Fukuoka, look no further than the daintiness of a Hakata Doll. Nothing can beat the beauty and fine tenderness formed from techniques that have been handed down for over 500 years. While here at the very famous very famous Hakata Doll shop, Hakata Shogetsudo you will have the opportunity for a hands-on doll-coloring experience. Along with the memory, your Hakata Doll will be beautiful and unique, making it one of the coolest souvenirs ever. Now, off to Canal City, a large shopping and entertainment complex, known as the city within the city due to its numerous attractions including shops; cafes; restaurants; a theater; game center; cinemas; two hotels; and a canal, which runs through the complex. Enjoy some time here to shop and have lunch on your own.

From here, we return to our hotel, arrival by 2:30pm and the remainder of the afternoon and evening are. Here as well, our location by the Hakata Station offers many shopping and dining choice. The popular 108-yen Daiso and Tokyu Department Store are just a few steps away. Accommodations: Hotel Clio Court Hakata Day 4 November 14 th, 2018 Wednesday Hakata-Yanagawa-Hakata (B/L) After breakfast, please meet your guide by 9:00am as are off to Yamagata City, surrounded by hundreds of canals navigable in gondolas, is commonly known as the Venice of Kyushu. It flourished as a castle town under the Tachibana clan and is also famous as the home town of renowned tanka poet Kitahara Hakushu. He lived during the periods of Meiji, Taisho, and Showa, leaving his great footmarks on Japan s modern literature as a port. We are here today to enjoy one of the town s famous river boat rides on a gondola-like Donko boat manned by a boatman using a pole to guide it down the Yanagawa River. Sit back and enjoy the breathtaking scenic views of this riverside town in its autumn colors. From here, lunch, Japanese set menu at Restaurant Taigetsukan, overlooking the scenic views of the beautiful Tachibana Family Gardens. After lunch, a visit to Yanagawa Tachibana-Tei Ohana, which was the residence of Tachibana Family, the feudal lord of Yanagawa clan dating back to the Edo Period. In 1738, the 5 th feudal lord of Yanagawa, built a villa in this region which was once called Ohanabatake. Since then locals have come to admire the area which came to be called Ohana. In 1909, Kanji Tachibana, the 14th lord, completed the residence which includes Western and Japanese buildings as a guest house for VIPs. Following the war, the Tachibana family made use of the former residence to operate the restaurant inn of Ohana. The garden, Shoto-en, which is faced by the 100-tatami mat Japanese-style Ohiroma great hall and the living room, is a Japanese-style garden that was built to resemble Matsushima, one of the Three Views of Japan, and is currently nationally designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty, elegantly established with 280 black pines, 1500 garden stones and 14 stone lanterns centering around a pond. Enjoy this fall foliage viewing site. We now make our way back to Hakata, but first stopping at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Fukuoka, where more than 2 million people visit during the first three days of New Year. In this shrine, Sugawara-no Michizane, an excellent poet, particularly in Chinese poetry in the late 9th century, is enshrined as the god of academic achievements. During the entrance exam season, young people from all parts of Japan preparing for these examinations and their parents come to the shrine to pray for success and academic achievement. Michizane passed away in Dazaifu in 903, just a few years after being sent into exile. Shortly after his death the country was ravaged by natural disasters, and people came to believe that the calamities were caused by the wrathful spirit of Michizane, still angered by his unjust treatment. Offerings were made to the spirit of Michizane and the tradition of Tenmangu Shrines was begun. The Tenmangu Shrine in Dazaifu was built on the site of his grave. The entire length of the approach is lined with shops that cater to the shrine's visitors. Many of the shops sell umegae mochi, a specialty of this area. The shrine is rather large, stretching about 250 meters from one end to the other. After passing through the torii gate at the entrance, visitors will come across a pond that was built in the shape of the Japanese character for "heart". A path leads across two arched bridges and islands which represent the past, present, and future. Enjoy walking around as this is another perfect spot of fall foliage viewing.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and approached lined with shops on both sides Once back at our hotel, arrival by 5:30pm, the remainder of the evening is. Accommodations: Hotel Clio Court Hakata Day 5 November 15 th, 2018 Thursday Hakata-Suo-Oshima Island (B/L/D) After breakfast, please meet your guide in the lobby by 8:30am, a full day of touring ahead of us, visiting Moji and Suo Island. The morning drive to Moji is approximately 1.5 hours and once there we will be visiting the Mojiko Port area. Moji was one of five cities that merged to form Kitakyushu City in The area boasts many interesting historic buildings. For instance, the former Moji Mitsui Club once hosted Dr. Albert Einstein and his wife when they visited in the 1920s. We will be visiting Mojiko, Moji Port, once a prominent international trading port alongside its counterparts in Kobe and Yokyohama; however, today it serves more of a tourist destination to see several of the well-preserved Western style buildings from the Meiji and Taishi Periods. Enjoy our morning stroll along this historic waterfront, viewing the many red-brick buildings harking back to its golden days. From here, lunch at a local restaurant followed by a visit to Chofu Garden, a kaiyu-style Japanese garden, featuring a pond, study building, tea-house, bower (rustic dwelling) and a river. The garden s beauty changes with the season. Enjoy the fall foliage viewing of the beautiful maple trees. We are now off to Suo- Oshimia Island, the third largest island in the Seto Inland Sea and slightly smaller than our island of Lanai. As you cross over from the mainland on the Seto Ohashi bridge, at first it doesn t feel like you re on an island, but as we leisurely drive along, the glassy water always in view, you ll catch glimpses of the island lifestyle settlements and mandarin orchards dotted around the mountainous hinterland and small coastal fishing villages. The drive time is approximately three hours which includes a stop along the way. One of the most fascinating facts about Suo-Oshima is its historical links with Hawaii. In 1885, many islanders immigrated to Hawaii, as part of the government-contracted migration program. About 3900 residents moved to Hawaii in that decade. Now the Hawaiian island of Kauai is Suo-Oshima s sister island and a variety of exchange activities occur. For example, in the summer, the local government officials and post office workers wear Hawaiian shirts, and a hula dance event is also held on Suo-Oshima. This is just one way of celebrating the island s history. There is this indescribable something about the sun dipping behind a misty Japanese mountain view, reflecting off the water, quite an inspirational sight. Accommodations for the evening are at the Hotel and Resort Sunshine Sazanseto, a true southern European type bayside resort hotel that blends Japan with a feeling of Hawaii. This beach front resorts offers an all-season swimming pool and hot spring bath with sauna. Our arrival will be by 5:00pm followed by dinner at 6:00pm. After dinner, enjoy a relaxed evening at the onsen or have fun at the bar or try your hand in one of the karaoke rooms.

Accommodations: Hotel and Resort Sunshine Sazanseto Day 6 November 16 th, 2018 Friday Suo-Oshima Island-Miyajima-Hiroshima (B) After breakfast, please meet your guide by 8:30am as we have a full and fun filled day ahead of us, making our way to Hiroshina later this afternoon. The morning begins with a visit to the Museum of Japanese Immigration to Hawaii, opened on February 8 th, 1999 to coincide with the arrival on February 8 th,1885, the first boat load of Japanese government contracted emigrants to Hawaii. This small but impactful museum, housed in the once former Fukumoto home has been completely restored. The museum displays the hardships faced by emigrants in Hawaii, a glimpse of what every day was like working in the sugar fields, their contributions and sometimes fortunes that contributed to the growth of culture and the economy. Also displayed are a variety of Hawaiian artifact and everyday items from that era as well as a database of names and dates of when Japanese locals emigrated to Hawaii to inform present and future generations of their ancestor s past. If you do have family members who may have emigrated during this period, we suggest you gather as much information on them as possible and see if it matches with the museum s files. From here, we are off to Miyajimaguchi and once at the port, board the ferry for a quick 10-minute ride to Miyajima Island, one of the most scenic spots in Japan. It has long been regarded as an Island of Gods on the beautiful Seto Inland Sea. It is a romantic and historical island where Itsukushima Shrine, a World Heritage site, is located, along with the Virgin Forest of Mt. Misen, and numerous preserved shrines, temples, and historical monuments. Its star attraction is the oft-photographed vermilion torii (shrine gate) of Itsukushima-jinja, which seems to float on the waves at high tide a scene that has traditionally been ranked as one of the three best views in Japan. From the ferry station, we will walk along Omote-Sando, the main street from the port to Itsukushima Shrine. There are many souvenir shops on both sides of the street. You will have time to enjoy souvenir shopping for a Shamoji (a rice scoop) or the well-known Momiji manju, a bun with a bean-jam filling made from maple leaves as well and other crafts. We will now visit the cultural heritage site, called the "Itsukushima Shinto Shrine" that is dedicated to the God protecting people from sea disasters and wars. It is said that this shrine was constructed around 593; however, after the warlord Taira no Kiyomori ( ) rebuilt it in 1168, it became the magnificent vermilion-lacquered building it is today. The most interesting feature of this shrine is the Torii (a kind of gate symbolizing a shrine) and the Shaden (shrine pavilion) in the sea, which are both submerged at full tide, but at low tide the sea water recedes completely, and it is possible to walk out to the gate. Fall time here is a beautiful season, enjoy viewing the fall foliage. Floating torii and Itsukushima Shinto Shrine plenty to choose for lunch & shopping We now journey to Hiroshima via aqua-liner ferry and what a beautiful way, just sit back and enjoy the beautiful landscape of Hiroshima.

With six beautiful rivers flowing through it, Hiroshima is called the City of Water. The origins of the city date back to 1589 when Mori Terumoto, a feudal lord, built Hiroshima Castle at the large delta of the Ota-gawa River. Because the delta resembled a large island, the area was called "Hiroshima", or 'wide island' in Japanese. Although many only know it for the horrific split second on August 6, 1945, when it became the site of the world's first atomic bomb attack, it is now a modern, cosmopolitan city with excellent cuisine and a bustling nightlife. Once here, off to our hotel for the evening, Hotel Granvia Hiroshima. Not only a wonderful hotel, but ideally located at the Hiroshima Station. You will find many shops and dining options just steps away. After check-in, the remainder of the evening is. Accommodations: Hotel Granvia Hiroshima Day 7 November 17 th, 2018 Saturday Hiroshima-Kurashiki-Okayama (B/L) After breakfast, please meet your guide in the lobby by 8:00am as off on another full day of touring. The morning begins at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, located in the center of Hiroshima City. It is difficult to imagine that this triangle shaped piece of land bordered by two rivers was once a busy commercial and residential downtown area. The atomic bomb eliminated everything in the town. After World War II, a group led by a Japanese architect Kenzo Tange designed the park to turn the land into the Peace Memorial Park It was completed in There are many buildings and monuments which commemorate people who lost their lives at that time and also represent the people's prayers for peace, such as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, the Memorial Cenotaph and the Statue of the A- Bomb Children, etc. By imagining the contrast between the misery of the atomic bomb attack and the beauty and tranquility in the park while visiting spots in the park, you will be moved to appreciate how precious peace is. Our next stop is at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, located in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. By standing on the Peace Boulevard side, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, the Memorial Cenotaph, the Peace Flame, and the A-Bomb Dome can be seen along a straight line. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, which opened in 1955, gives people an opportunity to learn of the outcome of the bomb attack and consider what peace really means through many reference materials. The East Wing exhibits photographs, panels, videos, and panorama models showing the actual history of Hiroshima before and after the bomb attack. The main building exhibits victims' belongings and references which show the misery of the bomb attack. You will see a burnt lunch box, a tricycle which a 3-year-old boy was riding, etc., which reflects the instantaneous destruction and strike right at the heart of visitors. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum was designed by a group headed by Kenzo Tange, who also designed the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The strength of humanity rising up from the ruins is expressed in the piloti-style space under the main building. The last stop is at the A-Bomb Dome, a symbol of peace which most people have at least seen at one time in a picture. The building, which was designed by a Czech architect in 1915, had been used as the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. Hiroshima citizens back then loved so much European modern-style buildings of the time. In 1912, the National Confectionery Exposition was held in this place. From that exposition, Baumkuchen, which represented German cake, was manufactured, and sold in Japan for the first time. Since the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall was located only around 160 meters from the hypocenter, the building was blown up, and all those inside the building died. However, the building was not destroyed completely because the blast of the atomic bomb, which was vaporized in the air, prevented it from totally collapsing. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and has been representing people's prayers for a lasting peace.

A-Bomb Dome Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park For lunch, we will enjoy one of the region s most popular dishes, okonomiyaki, and a type of Japanese style pancake. Okonomiyaki is a popular pan-fried food consisting of batter and cabbage. Selected toppings and ingredients are added which can vary (anything from meat and seafood to wasabi and cheese). This variability is reflected in the dish s name; okonomi literally means to one s likes. okonomiyaki, and a type of Japanese style pancake From here, off to Okayama, approximately three hours which includes a rest stop along the way. Okayama is a city proud of its connection to Momotarō, the demon-quelling boy hero of one of Japan's best-known folk tales. You'll spot his face beaming out at you all over town. The most many travelers see of Okayama is the blur of color as they fly through on the shinkansen to Hiroshima. But it's worth the stop, if only to spend a few hours strolling around Kōraku-en, one of Japan s top three gardens, which is overlooked by the city's crow-black castle. Once here, a visit to Korajuen Garden, which incorporates the typical features of a Japanese landscape garden, including a large pond, streams, walking paths and a hill that serves as a lookout point. Rather unique for a Japanese garden, however, are its spacious lawns. Also, found in the garden are groves of plum, cherry and maple trees, tea and rice fields, an archery range and a crane aviary. Korakuen Garden From here we are off to our hotel for the evening, Hotel Granvia Okayama, with direct access to the JR Okayama Station. The hotel offers an indoor pool and sauna. There is a wide variety of dining and shopping options just steps away.

Accommodations: Hotel Granvia Okayama Day 8 November 18 th, 2018 Sunday Okayama-Kurashiki-Himeji-Kobe (B) After breakfast, please meet your guide in the lobby by 9:00am as off on another full day of touring. The morning begins with a stop at the Ohara Museum of Art, Japan s first museum of Western art. This private museum consists of four buildings. The Main Gallery features most of the museum s highlights. On display are masterpieces of Western art by Picasso, El Greco, Gauguin, Modigliani, Rodin, Klee, Pollock, and Kandinsky among others. The artists in the collection span a wide variety of periods and nationalities. The Annex features several works by Japanese artists, and includes both oil paintings and sculptures. The Craft Art Gallery displays ceramics, woodblock prints, stencil dyeing, and other crafts. The Asiatic Art Gallery includes artefacts from Egypt and antiques from China. The final building, the Kojima Museum is a gallery for Kojima Torajiro, a Japanese artist who painted in the Western style. Kojima purchased much of the art on display at the Main Gallery on behalf of Ohara Magosaburo, the owner of the Kurabo textile company and founder of the Ohara Museum. From here we are off to the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter to stroll her backstreets, a tiny but immaculately preserved section of its old rice-merchant quarter, which prospered in the Edo period. There are about 300 old houses and granaries. The oldest is about 300 years old. Old Kurashiki today consists of dozens of characteristic whitewashed, black-tiled kura, or rice granaries, centered around a willow-lined transport canal. Many have been converted into museums, shops, teahouses, and inns, injecting contemporary vitality into these relics of traditional Japan. It is considered one of the picturesque merchants quarter in Japan. The quaint charm of those times has been retained with white wooden houses with traditional black tiles & no electrical poles on the roads! Some families who have lived here for generations are still there! It is a must see traditional neighborhood where you will have time to enjoy the atmosphere, have lunch on your own and do some small kine shopping. Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter We are now off to Himeji, a city located in Hyōgo Prefecture in the Kansai region of Japan most famous for its magnificent castle, Himeji which we will be visiting. Himeji Castle, also known as White Heron Castle (Shirasagijo) due to its elegant, white appearance, is widely considered as Japan's most spectacular castle for its imposing size and beauty and its well preserved, complex castle grounds. The castle is both a national treasure and a world heritage site. Unlike many other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire and survives to this day as one of the country's twelve original castles. The castle recently underwent extensive renovation over several years and was fully re-opened to the public in March 2015.

Himeji Castle lies at a strategic point along the western approach to the former capital city of Kyoto. The first fortifications built on the site were completed in the 1400s, and were gradually enlarged over the centuries by the various clans who ruled over the region. The castle complex as it survives today is over 400 years old and was completed in It is made up of over eighty buildings spread across multiple baileys, which are connected by a series of gates and winding paths. From here off to our hotel for the final two nights on tour, Hotel Monte Hermana Kobe Amalie, just about a 10-minute walk to the JR Sannomiya Station, near Ikuta Shrine and Nanjing Chinatown. After checking in the remainder of the evening is. Accommodations: Hotel Monte Hermana Kobe Amalie Day 9 November 19 th, 2018 Monday Kobe (B) After breakfast, please meet your guide in the lobby by 9:00am as we are off on a half day of touring. The morning begins with a visit to Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden and a ride on the Ropeway. Surrounded by flowers, the Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden is ensconced in the mountain above the picturesque port city of Kobe. They are Japan s largest herb gardens with about 75,000 herbs and flowers of about 200 kinds blooming throughout the year. There are 14 garden areas where visitors are welcomed by seasonal herbs and flowers arranged according to different themes. Fall foliage time is beautiful on the ropeway, each car has glass around all sides, providing a panoramic view for you to enjoy. Here you will find a large selection of shops, restaurants, cafes, and other amusements We are stopping at the most prominent shopping complex in Kobe Harborland is Umie which consists of three parts: Mosaic, South Mall, and North Mall. Enjoy time here to shop and have lunch on your own. From here, back to our hotel by 2:00pm and the remainder of the afternoon and evening is. Accommodations: Hotel Monte Hermana Kobe Amalie Day 10 November 20 th, 2018 Tuesday Kobe-Osaka-Kansai (B) After breakfast, please meet your guide in the lobby by 9:00am. It may be our farewell, but we plan to make the most of this last day on tour. The morning begins with an always fun sake brewery visit, the Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum. Enjoy a brief tour to better understand of the tradition of "sake" making that has been carried down through the ages. Afterwards, time to do some sake tasting and even purchase some to bring back home.

From here we are off to Osaka for the afternoon, stopping first at Osaka Castle, the symbol of Osaka with it s over 400 years of history. Built as a display of power by Toyotomi Hideyoshi after he achieved his goal of unifying Japan. One hundred thousand workers toiled for three years to construct an 'impregnable' granite castle, finishing the job in It was destroyed 32 years later by the armies of Tokugawa Ieyasu, rebuilt within 10 years, and then suffered a further calamity when another generation of the Tokugawa clan razed it rather than let it fall to the forces of the Meiji Restoration in The present structure is a 1931 concrete reconstruction of the original, which was refurbished in The interior houses an excellent collection of displays relating to the castle, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the city of Osaka. On the 8th floor is an observation deck with 360-degree views. The castle and park are at their colorful best in the cherry-blossom and autumnfoliage seasons. Enjoy viewing the fall colors along the castle ground. On today s tour we will only be visiting the castle grounds and not entering. Osaka Castle & Moat around the castle Viewing area from the castle steeple Now, off to the Dotonbori section of the city. Osaka is known as the gastronomists' town, and thus the entire area of Dotonbori is thronged with an unbelievable number of restaurants and amusement facilities, and is dearly loved by the Osakaites. We have allowed for two hours here so that you can enjoy a leisurely lunch and maybe get in some shopping at the nearby Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade. Please meet back by 4:00pm at the designated meeting spot as we now make our way to the Kansai Airport, but just before, a last-minute shopping stop at the AEON Mall close by to the airport.
