It may even be more visually stunning than the cherry blossoms of spring, maybe. The leaves of the maple trees and ginkgo trees turning red and yellow in concert presents you with beautiful scenery at every turn. Come, join us as we explore the ultramodern and traditional sides of Southern Japan on this unique and unforgettable nine-day experience. Our tour begins in the port city of Kobe, opened to the world as an international port in 1868, following the lifting of Japan's nearly 230-year-long policy of seclusion. From here, the World Heritage site of Himeji Castle and Kurashiki s historic canal area dating back to the Edo Period. It s only the beginning as we journey on to the picturesque port town of Tomonoura, with its endearing oldfashioned fishing townscape. nestled in its half-moon bay overlooking the Seto Inland Sea National Park, Tomonoura has been inspiring poets and artists for centuries. From here, off to Hiroshima, a city whose tragic history is brightened by its present-day vitality and not far away, the island of Miyajima, home to Japan s most iconic sight: the floating torii of Itsukushima Shrine. Two World Heritage sites, the A-Bomb Dome of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Itsukushima Shrine are must visits on our tour. If experiencing traditional Japanese culture is on your list, Kyoto and Nara are unmissable and lastly Osaka, Japan's third-largest city, where things move a bit faster and people are a bit brasher. It packs more color than most with its dazzling neon, vivid storefronts, and its unofficial slogan, kuidaore ('eat until you drop'). 2 Day 2 November 13 th, 2018 Tuesday Kansai-Kobe (D) On arrival in Osaka, please make your way to the baggage claim area and then proceed to customs clearing. On exiting customs, we will be met by our local English speaking guide. A short walk to our charter bus and then off to Kobe. The travel time will be approximately 1.5 hours. A dinner bento box will be provided for you to enjoy along the drive. Accommodations for the next 2 nights are at the Kobe Plaza Hotel, ideally located right s right next to JR Motomachi Station. Accommodations: Kobe Plaza Hotel Day 3 November 14 th, 2018 Wednesday Kobe (B/L) After breakfast, please meet your guide by 9:00am as we are off on a full day of touring Kobe. The morning begins with a ride on the Rokko-Arima Ropeway to enjoy the nature s bounty from the sky. It allows you to travel between the Mt. Rokko mountaintop area and the Arima Onsen hot springs via a 12- minute ride. Sit back, take out your camera and enjoy the dynamic natural sights, the beautiful fall foliage colors. From here a visit to the Rokko Garden Terrace, a modern art space. This complex has several observation spots, allowing for sweeping views of Kobe City, the Akashi Strait, and Osaka Bay. Enjoy time to walk around and take in what is one of the most panoramic spots in Japan in any season, but especially during the fall foliage period. Now, lunch time and when in Kobe, the infamous Kobe beef is a must do. Enjoy a Japanese Kobe beef lunch at Steakland, a popular eatery among locals and tourists. This afternoon we are off to visit Kobe Port Tower, completed in 1963 and one of the city s landmarks. It was the world s first building to feature a pipe structure, nicknamed the Steel Tower Beauty because of its unique structure and shape, reminiscent of an elongated Japanese drum. Once at the observation platform, enjoy a magnificent 360-degree panorama. From here, you can see the peaks of Mount Rokko, the streets of Kobe, and the Port of Kobe, as well as Awaji Island, Osaka Bay, and the Senshu region in the distance. When here do not miss the section of floor made from a special glass that becomes transparent as you approach it. It offers a spectacular view straight down from 75 meters above the ground, and a ceiling that uses optical fibers to create the effect of a nebulous starry sky. Now off to Sannomiya Center Gai Shopping Street, a large shopping arcade offering a wide variety of retail and food outlets. Enjoy time here to explore and shop. Kobe s Chinatown is just steps away and always a treat to explore. From here, back to our hotel, arrival by 5:30pm and the remainder of the evening is.

3 Accommodations: Kobe Plaza Hotel Day 4 November 15 th, 2018 Thursday Kobe-Himeji-Kurashiki-Okayama (B/L) After breakfast, please meet your guide by 8:30am as we bid Kobe good-bye and journey on. Our first stop of the day is in Himeji, most famous for its magnificent castle, Himeji Castle, widely considered to be Japan's most beautiful surviving feudal castle. The castle is designated both a national treasure and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Himeji Castle, also known as White Heron Castle due to its elegant, white appearance, is widely considered Japan's most spectacular castle for its imposing size and beauty and its well preserved, complex castle grounds. Unlike other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire and survives to this day as one of the country s twelve original castles. After extensive renovations, it was fully re-opened to the pubic in early Koko-en Garden, adjacent to Himeji Castle is a famous fall foliage viewing spot. The scenery is simply lovely with the beautiful colors of fall all around. Enjoy time here to view the foliage. Now, off to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. From here we are off to the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter to stroll her backstreets, a tiny but immaculately preserved section of its old rice-merchant quarter, which prospered in the Edo period. There are about 300 old houses and granaries. The oldest is about 300 years old. The drive time is approximately 2 hours. Old Kurashiki today consists of dozens of characteristic whitewashed, black-tiled kura, or rice granaries, centered around a willow-lined transport canal. Many have been converted into museums, shops, teahouses, and inns, injecting contemporary vitality into these relics of traditional Japan. It is considered one of the picturesque merchants quarter in Japan. The quaint charm of those times has been retained with white wooden houses with traditional black tiles & no electrical poles on the roads! Some families who have lived here for generations are still there! It is a must see traditional neighborhood where you will have time to enjoy the atmosphere, have lunch on your own and do some small kine shopping. Once again, another beautiful area to take in these incredible fall colors and autumn scenery. Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter

4 Now, on to Okayama and our hotel for the evening, Hotel Granvia Okayama, with direct access to the JR Okayama Station. The hotel offers an indoor pool and sauna. Accommodations: Hotel Granvia Okayama Day 5 November 16 th, 2018 Friday Okayama-Tomonoura-Hiroshima (B/L) After breakfast, please meet your guide by as we are off on a full day of touring. The morning begins with a visit to Okayama s main attraction, Korakuen, a beautiful landscaped garden. It is ranked as one of Japan's three best landscape gardens. It is located just beside Okayama Castle. We will be visiting Korakuen, which incorporates the typical features of a Japanese landscape garden, including a large pond, streams, walking paths and a hill that serves as a lookout point. Rather unique for a Japanese garden, however, are its spacious lawns. Also, found in the garden are groves of plum, cherry and maple trees, tea and rice fields, an archery range, and a crane aviary. This is truly one of the best places to visit for autumn foliage. The maple trees are beautiful in spring, when they are in bud, but in autumn, when their vivid tapestry of auburn hues is like a Japanese brocade, a sight that cannot be missed. Walk around a enjoy viewing the colors of fall. Korakuen Garden From here, we bid Okayama good-bye and journey on to Tomonoura, a picturesque port town situated at a bay facing the Seto Inland Sea. It offers an endearing old-fashioned fishing townscape, with a calm and laidback atmosphere. The drive time is approximately 2 hours and once here, time for lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, time to enjoy the old town center of Tomonoura. It has many photogenic alleys lined by rustic old houses with wooden facades. There are a few shops selling homeishu, the local medicinal liquor. The bayfront area is littered with small boats, demonstrating the port's continuing relevancy. Below are a few of the attractions around the town center you can visit: Joyato Lighthouse- Built during the Edo Period and is a symbol of Tomonoura. The eleven-meter-tall structure stands prominently at the waterfront directly south of the town center. Ota Residence- This residence belonged to a family who started brewing homeishu in the late 17th century. From 1710 to the onset of the Meiji Period, the family flourished as it was granted the monopoly over

5 homeishu production. The residence was later sold when business took a downturn, but its new owner preserved many features of the buildings. Today, visitors can view the residence's multiple Tatami mat rooms, tea rooms and homeishu storehouses. Pier- A stroll along the bay is refreshing with good views of the town and the sea. At the eastern corner of the bay there is a long pier that offer nice views of the town and coastal scenery. Irohamaru Museum- Irohamaru was the name of a merchant ship that sank in 1867, prominent because the important historical figure Sakamoto Ryoma was on board at the time. More than a hundred years later, residents from Tomonoura discovered the wreckage and retrieved artifacts and parts of the ship, which are exhibited here. From here we are off to Hiroshima, the drive time approximately 2 hours. Once here, time to check-in to our hotel for the evening, Hotel Granvia Hiroshima, ideally located, directly connected to the JR Hiroshima Shinkansen (Bullet Train) Station. A wide variety of dining and shopping options are available to you. Accommodations: Hotel Granvia Hiroshima Day 6 November 17 th, 2018 Saturday Hiroshima-Miyashima-Kyoto (B) After breakfast, please meet your guide in the lobby by 8:00am. Our bags will be sent on to Kyoto and meet up with us later this afternoon when we check in. The morning begins with a drive to the Miyashima Ferry Dock, approximately 45 minutes. Once here we will take a short 10-minute ferry over to Miyajima Island. Miyajima Island is one of the most scenic spots in Japan. It has long been regarded as an Island of Gods on the beautiful Seto Inland Sea. It is a romantic and historical island where Itsukushima Shrine, a World Heritage site, is located, along with the Virgin Forest of Mt. Misen, and numerous preserved shrines, temples, and historical monuments. Its star attraction is the oft-photographed vermilion torii (shrine gate) of Itsukushima-jinja, which seems to float on the waves at high tide a scene that has traditionally been ranked as one of the three best views in Japan. From the ferry station, we will walk along Omote-Sando, the main street from the port to Itsukushima Shrine. There are many souvenir shops on both sides of the street. You will have time to enjoy souvenir shopping for a Shamoji (a rice scoop) or the well-known Momiji manju, a bun with a bean-jam filling made from maple leaves as well and other crafts. We will now visit the cultural heritage site, called the "Itsukushima Shinto Shrine" that is dedicated to the God protecting people from sea disasters and wars. It is said that this shrine was constructed around 593; however, after the warlord Taira no Kiyomori ( ) rebuilt it in 1168, it became the magnificent vermilion-lacquered building it is today. The most interesting feature of this shrine is the Torii (a kind of gate symbolizing a shrine) and the Shaden (shrine pavilion) in the sea, which are both submerged at full tide, but at low tide the sea water recedes completely, and it is possible to walk out to the gate. Fall time here is a beautiful season, enjoy viewing the fall foliage.

6 Floating torii and Itsukushima Shinto Shrine plenty to choose for lunch & shopping After lunch on your own here on Miyajima, we return by ferry to the mainland and our bus will take us back to Hiroshima where we have a full afternoon of touring ahead of us. With six beautiful rivers flowing through it, Hiroshima is called the City of Water. The origins of the city date back to 1589 when Mori Terumoto, a feudal lord, built Hiroshima Castle at the large delta of the Otagawa River. Because the delta resembled a large island, the area was called "Hiroshima", or 'wide island' in Japanese. Although many only know it for the horrific split second on August 6, 1945, when it became the site of the world's first atomic bomb attack, it is now a modern, cosmopolitan city with excellent cuisine and a bustling nightlife. Our first stop will be at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, located in the center of Hiroshima City. It is difficult to imagine that this triangle shaped piece of land bordered by two rivers was once a busy commercial and residential downtown area. The atomic bomb eliminated everything in the town. After World War II, a group led by a Japanese architect Kenzo Tange designed the park to turn the land into the Peace Memorial Park It was completed in There are many buildings and monuments which commemorate people who lost their lives at that time and also represent the people's prayers for peace, such as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, the Memorial Cenotaph and the Statue of the A-Bomb Children, etc. By imagining the contrast between the misery of the atomic bomb attack and the beauty and tranquility in the park while visiting spots in the park, you will be moved to appreciate how precious peace is. Our next stop is at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, located in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. By standing on the Peace Boulevard side, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, the Memorial Cenotaph, the Peace Flame, and the A-Bomb Dome can be seen along a straight line. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, which opened in 1955, gives people an opportunity to learn of the outcome of the bomb attack and consider what peace really means through many reference materials. The East Wing exhibits photographs, panels, videos, and panorama models showing the actual history of Hiroshima before and after the bomb attack. The main building exhibits victims' belongings and references which show the misery of the bomb attack. You will see a burnt lunch box, a tricycle which a 3-year-old boy was riding, etc., which reflects the instantaneous destruction and strike right at the heart of visitors. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum was designed by a group headed by Kenzo Tange, who also designed the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The strength of humanity rising from the ruins is expressed in the piloti-style space under the main building. The last stop today will be at A-Bomb Dome, a symbol of peace which most people have at least seen at one time in a picture. The building, which was designed by a Czech architect in 1915, had been used as the

7 Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. Hiroshima citizens back then loved so much European modern-style buildings of the time. In 1912, the National Confectionery Exposition was held in this place. From that exposition, Baumkuchen, which represented German cake, was manufactured, and sold in Japan for the first time. Since the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall was located only around 160 meters from the hypocenter, the building was blown up, and all those inside the building died. However, the building was not destroyed completely because the blast of the atomic bomb, which was vaporized in the air, prevented it from totally collapsing. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and has been representing people's prayers for a lasting peace. A-Bomb Dome Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park We now make our way to the Hiroshima JR Station for the bullet train ride to Kyoto. The departure is on the Nozomi 50, at 4:31pm and arrival in Kyoto at 6:10pm. On arrival in Kyoto, our hotel, New Miyako Hotel is just across the street and we will walk over. Our luggage will be waiting on us. The remainder of the evening is. Again, we are ideally situated, right across the street from the Kyoto JR Station and just around the corner from the AEOM Mall. There are many choices for shopping and dining available to you this evening. Accommodations: New Miyako Hotel Day 7 November 18 th, 2018 Sunday Kyoto (B) After breakfast, please meet your guide by 8:30am as we are off on a full day of touring. Kyoto is old Japan, made up of quiet temples, grand gardens, and colorful shrines. While the rest of Japan has adopted modernity with abandon, the old ways remain in Kyoto. In a city as full of historical wonders as Kyoto, you can rest assured that the fall foliage is breathtaking too! The fall colors here are just as magnificent. people come from all over the world to Kyoto in the fall just to appreciate the sight of vivid red Japanese maple trees against a backdrop of traditional Japanese architecture. The morning begins with a visit to Kyoto s famed Golden Pavilion. Be it capped by snow in winter or set against a lush green background in summer, nothing is as symbolic of Kyoto as Kinkaku-ji's golden reflection shimmering across the rippled surface of the pond before it. Kinkaku-ji is one of Japan's best-known sights. The original building was built in 1397 as a retirement villa for Shōgun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. His son converted it into a temple.

8 In 1950, a young monk consummated his obsession with the temple by burning it to the ground. The monk's story was fictionalized in Mishima Yukio's The Golden Pavilion. In 1955, a full reconstruction was completed that exactly followed the original design, but the gold-foil covering was extended to the lower floors. The temple is set in three stories. The 1st floor is Shinden-zukuri, the palace style. It is named Ho-sui-in. The 2nd floor is Buke-zukuri, the style of the samurai house and is called Cho-on-do. The 3rd floor is Karayo style or Zen temple style. It is called Kukkyo-cho. Both the 2nd and 3rd floors are covered with gold-leaf on Japanese lacquer. The roof, upon which the Chinese phoenix settles, is thatched with shingles. The entire temple is surrounded by a beautiful garden with a pond in the front called the Mirror Pond. The stones in the pond give a representation of the Buddhist era. Enjoy walking around and viewing the fall colors. Golden Pavilion From here we will be visiting Nijo Castle, built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period. His grandson completed the castle's palace buildings 23 years later and further expanded the castle by adding a five-story castle keep. The wide moat, massive stone walls, and heavy yet elaborate gates are still impressive, and were the only fortifications the inhabitants felt necessary, so firm was their grip on power. The grounds are large and contain several lovely gardens as well as groves of plum and cherry trees. The palace building itself is imposing, yet upon closer examination, is rich in decorative detail. Inside the palace are several masterpieces of Japanese art, most notably the painted screens of the main chamber. In this room, the shoguns met the daimyo (high-ranking warlord-administrators) who sought an audience. The screens were painted by artists of the Kano school and employ rich colors and large amounts of gilt to depict flowers, trees, birds, and tigers. They were meant to impress. Also in the palace are the famous "nightingale floors," which were designed to squeak when stepped on and thus alert guards to any intruders. Now, off to two of Kyoto s most attractive streets are Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka, a pair of gently sloping lanes that lead down from Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Lined with beautifully restored traditional shophouses and blissfully of the overhead power lines that mar the rest of Kyoto, Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka are a pair of pedestrian-only lanes that make for some of the most atmospheric strolling in the whole city. In fact, it s here that you are most likely to be able to imagine what Kyoto looked like before modernity descended in full force. You ll find plenty of restaurants and teahouses to refresh yourself as you explore. Enjoy time here to browse, shop and lunch on your own.

9 Our afternoon ends with a visit to to Kodai Yuzen and Gallery for a hands-on handkerchief painting experience. You can really enjoy yourself here in Kodai Yuzen-en touching the heart of traditional beauty of Yuzen-Zome. Yuzen-Zome, a magnificent work of dyeing art with marvelous colors and patterns spread over Kimono, the Japanese national costume, is no doubt one of the best traditional arts Japan is proud of. Established about 330 years ago and named after the founder, Yuzen-sai Miyazaki. Yuzen-sai, first established himself as a famous painter of the pictures for beautiful Japanese fans, and the admirers praised his works. One day a kimono tailor encouraged him to expand his skill to paint beautiful pictures on Kimono and, after a tremendous effort, he established his unique style of hand-painting the figures on Kimono, and soon his art became very popular all over in Japan. The gallery was founded by the long-established kimono store "Kodai Yuzen Co., Ltd.", to display the beauty and tradition of Kyoto Yuzen dyed garments, and thus exhibits an array of kimonos to suit each of the four seasons. We now make our way back to our hotel, arrival by 4:30pm and the remainder of the afternoon and evening is. Accommodations: New Miyako Hotel Day 8 November 19 th, 2018 Monday Kyoto-Nara-Osaka (B/L) After breakfast at our hotel we will head out for a full day of touring. Please be ready in the lobby area by 7:30am. Our luggage will be transported by truck to our Osaka hotel and meet up with us later this afternoon. The morning begins with a drive to Nara for a visit to the Nara Deer Park and Todaiji Temple. The drive time is approximately 1.5 hours and between the visits, lunch is included, Japanese at a local restaurant. Nara, the ancient capital city in the Kansai region of Japan. Throughout 2010 the city celebrated its 1300th anniversary. Centuries before anyone had heard of Delhi or Shanghai or London or Paris and long before anywhere called Kyoto (let alone Tokyo) existed Nara was the first permanent capital of Japan, and the place where the country began to establish itself as a Buddhist kingdom. If you think of Japan as a land of bullet trains and J-pop in Shinjuku storefronts, come to Nara a city filled with rolling hills, ancient temples, and 1,200 entitled deer roaming its old streets. Our first stop will be at the Nara Deer Park, home to hundreds of ly roaming deer. Considered in Shinto to be messengers of the gods, Nara's nearly 1200 deer have become a symbol of the city and have been designated a natural treasure. You can purchase deer biscuits to feed them. The deer bow immediately when they see you have food. Autumn time here is breathtaking, enjoy walking around the park with the deer as they take cover under the maple and ginkgo trees. The leaves begin to transform and take on a new life, making the park an ideal place for spending some time. From here we are off to visit Nara's premier attraction, Todaiji Temple, and its Great Buddha (Daibutsu), Japan's largest bronze Buddha. When Emperor Shomu ordered construction of both the temple and Daibutsu in the mid-700s, he intended to make Todaiji the headquarters of all Buddhist temples in the land. As part of his plans for a Buddhist utopia, he commissioned work for this huge bronze statue of Buddha. It took eight

10 castings to complete this remarkable work of art. At a height of more than 15m (50 ft.), the Daibutsu is made of 437 tons of bronze, 286 pounds of pure gold, 165 pounds of mercury, and 7 tons of vegetable wax. However, thanks to Japan's frequent natural calamities, the Buddha of today isn't quite what it used to be. In 855, in what must have been a whopper of an earthquake, the statue lost its head. It was repaired in 861, but alas, the huge wooden building housing the Buddha was burned twice during wars, melting the Buddha's head. The present head dates from Be sure to walk in a circle around the Great Buddha to see it from all angles. Behind the statue is a model of how the Daibutsuden used to look, flanked by two massive pagodas. Behind the Great Buddha to the right is a huge wooden column with a small hole in it near the ground. According to popular belief, if you can manage to crawl through this opening, you'll be sure to reach enlightenment. You can also get your Englishlanguage fortune for 200 by shaking a bamboo canister until a wooden stick with a number comes out; the number corresponds to a piece of paper. The wooden structure housing the Great Buddha, called Daibutsuden, was also destroyed several times through the centuries; the present structure dates from It is the largest wooden structure in the world, but only two-thirds its original size. Now time to enjoy a Japanese style lunch at a local restaurant. Nara Deer Park Todaiji Temple The Great Buddha We now make our way to Osaka; the drive time is approximately 1.5 hours. Once here we will be visiting Osaka Castle-the symbol of Osaka with it s over 400 years of history. Built as a display of power by Toyotomi Hideyoshi after he achieved his goal of unifying Japan. One hundred thousand workers toiled for three years to construct an 'impregnable' granite castle, finishing the job in It was destroyed 32 years later by the armies of Tokugawa Ieyasu, rebuilt within 10 years, and then suffered a further calamity when another generation of the Tokugawa clan razed it rather than let it fall to the forces of the Meiji Restoration in The present structure is a 1931 concrete reconstruction of the original, which was refurbished in The interior houses an excellent collection of displays relating to the castle, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the city of Osaka. On the 8th floor is an observation deck with 360-degree views. The castle and park are at their colorful best in the cherry-blossom and autumn-foliage seasons. When it comes to places for admiring the autumn leaves, Osaka boasts just as many wonderful spots as Kyoto. Here in Osaka, enjoy the landscape created by the autumn leaves of the gingko trees against the background of the castle. It is truly a beautiful foliage viewing spot.

11 Osaka Castle & Moat around the castle Viewing area from the castle steeple From here we are off to our hotel for the evening, Cross Hotel, ideally located, less than one block to the Dotonbori and right around the corner from the Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade Street. Our arrival will be by 4:30pm. Welcome to Osaka, Japan s 3rd most populous city and the working heart of Kansai. Famous for its down-toearth citizens and the colorful Kansai-ben (Kansai dialect) they speak, it's a good counterpart to the refined atmosphere of Kyoto. Primarily, Osaka is famous for good eating: the phrase kuidaore (eat 'til you drop) was coined to describe Osakans' love for good food. Osaka is also a good place to experience a modern Japanese city. It's only surpassed by Tokyo as a showcase of the Japanese urban phenomenon. After checking in and having some time to freshen up, we are off to explore the Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade. This covered arcade shopping street has a very long history, site of some of Osaka's historical bridges. It has been around in some form for hundreds of years, and is still one of the city's most popular and famous spots. Shinsaibashi is the perfect spot for window-shopping and strolling. There's no shortage of places to shop, especially flanked by Amerika-mura and the Dotonbori, and Crysta Naghori underground, but this shopping arcade has charm. Not only does it have a wide selection of stores sure to please anyone, but the southern end of the arcade is at the Dotonbori River, a great sightseeing spot and home to that famous 'eat-til-you-burst' Osakan cuisine. There are many choices for dinner as well as the endless streets for shopping. Consider a nice stroll along the river after dinner. It is a Sunday night and the area will be buzzing with activity. Most of the shops open at 10:00am, but one of Hawaii s favorite shops, Don Quijote is open 24 hours a day. There are two stores, one right across the street from our hotel and the other just a few steps behind, along the canal. Please remember that you must check-out of your room by 12:00pm. Our bags will be stored until our scheduled meet time of 3:00pm. Our luggage will be sent separately to the airport and meet up with us on arrival at curb side.
