10 Welcome to Agrigento! Page 10 of 22 Agrigento is easily accessible by road from all of Sicily's main towns. The SS189 and SS121 connect with Palermo, while the SS115 runs along the coast to Sciacca and Licata. For Enna or Catania, take the SS640 via Caltanissetta. Located on the Southern coast of Sicily, in Italy, you can find a land of sun and agriculture called Agrigento. Its establishment took place around BC and it is attributed to Greek colonists who named it Akragas, their influence and architecture is noticeable through all the place. Well known for its magnificent Greek ruins, you will find the "Templo della Concordia", one of the best-preserved Greek temples in the word. There are two nearby rivers, the Hypsas and the Akragas. You will surely enjoy eating in a typical Italian restaurant, in a little cafe, or in a trendy enoteca in a pretty piazza. You can find some fashionable restaurants and pubs at "Viale della vittoria" or at Atenea street. The main walking street in Agento is called Via Tenea and you will find shops there; Agrigento is known for its trendy boutiques, antique shops. Moreover, every Friday there is a big market going on in the morning. You will admire and learn tomorrow with your guide the Greek contribution of the ancient colonists in the well known "The Valley of Temples" where you will find five Greek temples, divided into two zones: Eastern and Western zone and expand your knowledge in the "Museo Regionale Archeologico". You could also take a walk through the old center of Agrigento, you will find a range of small shops in Via Atena, the large cathedral in Via Duomo and also the Norman church "Chlesa dl Santa Maria del Grecl". Agrigento has a warm temperature climate throughout the year with hot dry summers. The average high and low temperatures are 26 C and 11 C respectively. In town, via Atenea, the main street in the historic center, is closed to traffic from 9am to 8pm, with a short break during lunchtime when cars can pass through the center (for loading luggage). Parking can be a nightmare in Agrigento. There's metered parking at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and on the streets around Piazzale Aldo Moro, although you'll have to arrive early to find a space. Enjoy! It is picturesquely situated on three hills in the south-western part of the province of Catania. The medieval old town was destroyed in 1693 by an earthquake and rebuilt in the Baroque style. In the city, there are still more than 80 ceramic workshops - some of them can be visited. The ceramic products can be purchased in countless souvenir shops of course. Attractions in Caltagirone In the main square, the Piazza Umberto I, you can see the cathedral from the 18th Century and the Palazzo Capitaniale Corte, which dates from the 16th Century. It was built by Gian Domenico Gagini and is a single-storey building with Doric pilasters. Along the Via Duoma you will reach the Piazza del Municipio with the Baroque City Hall and the modern Galleria L. Struzo, which is named after the founding father of the Christian Democracy party. About 300 metres west along the Corso Vittorio Emanuele there is the church of San Giacomo - originally a Norman temple, which was replaced by the three-nave church after the earthquake in In the Museo Civico, which is located in the old Bourbon prison, you can learn more about the local history of Caltagirone. Over a bridge, decorated with ceramics, you will reach the Church of San Francesco di Paola. It is located at the entrance to the city park where you will also find the interesting Museum of Ceramics. The Scala of Caltagirone Undoubtedly, the highlight of Caltagirone is the famous Scala, a ceramic staircase, leading from the Piazza del Municipio into the Upper Town. It was designed by Giuseppe Giacalone in ceramic tile steps decorated in the modern style lead up to the church Santa Maria del Monte, from where you have a magnificent view of Caltagirone. The church was also rebuilt after the earthquake in inside there is a picture of the Madonna di Conadomini from the 13th Century. The layout The focal point of the town is Piazza Roma, where the stately Church of Santa Venera towers over pastel-coloured buildings. Leading off the square is Via Vittorio Emmanuele, the main artery, where restaurants, small boutiques and an exquisite pastry shop can be found. There are several 18th-century churches of interest, like Chiesa Madre and Chiesa di Bongiardo. And shining a spotlight on traditional crafts is the Museo del Palmento, located in a renovated farmhouse. The beaches The closest beach is at Santa Tecla, 15 minutes drive away. It s a compact swathe of dark volcanic sand and gravel, framed by dramatic mountain peaks. The set-up is fairly basic, so you ll need to bring your own towels and parasol, though the promenade is lined with shops and restaurants. Slightly further away, in Fiumefreddo, is Blue Flag-winning Marina di Cottone Beach. This 9-kilometre pebble sweep has a steady supply of restaurants and bars, and is popular with families. Close to Catania Cosmopolitan Catania, Sicily s second-largest city, is 30 minutes away by car. It s knee-deep in history, with sights like the Catania Cathedral, the Aci Castle, and a roll call of Baroque palaces and churches.
