Today, we can enjoy the same majestic Alpine nature as we travel along the old routes through the Engadine and its tributary valleys in the south. Lush and colorful Alpine meadows, idyllic mountain lakes, fascinating glaciers in the Bernina mountain range and light-flooded larch woods, bathed in the golden colors of autumn. 3 SARATZ HISTORY From north to south C rossing boundaries in both senses of the word, with illegal imports and exports to neighboring Italy, the border to which runs through the southern valleys of the Engadine. During the two World Wars and in the years following 1945, illegal trade with the southern neighbors flourished and became established practice. Coffee, salt and cigarettes were smuggled out of the Engadine in return for rice, butter, chestnuts, wine, and rubber. Sometimes even horses were brought over the border illegally! In the southern tributary valleys of the Engadine, smuggling played a major role in the economy well into the 1970s in Val Poschiavo, Val Malenco, and Val Bregaglia, for example. The Bernina Pass was the classic route. Most smugglers traveled by night. They used various tricks to avoid the border guards. And they even joined forces to ensure the success of their trips: with Alpine farmers, for example, who would hang out white sheets to signal that the coast was clear risky smuggling and no customs officers were nearby. The surest way to avoid unpleasant encounters with the guardians of the law, however, was to take the challenging routes over the passes. Such journeys were equivalent to high Alpine mountaineering tours with bad weather, sudden cold spells, rockfall, lightning, and avalanches regularly resulting in tragic and sometimes even fatal accidents. Not least due to the fact that the smugglers were often poorly equipped with bad shoes and unsuitable clothing, and were carrying loads of thirty or more kilograms on their backs! T oday, the smuggling of days gone by is sur- rounded by an aura of romance. In the Engadine, visitors can follow in the footsteps of the Contrabbandieri as they wander along numerous stunningly beautiful and signposted trails. 5 DAY OUT FOR ALL THE FAMILY THE SECRET OF MORTERATSCH: GLACIERS AND FINE CHEESE an experience for all would-be adventurers! The nature trail to Morteratsch Glacier the third longest glacier in the eastern Alps offers a wonderful day out for all the family. Here you can discover interesting facts about the retreat of the glacier and the mysteries of life in the surrounding area. And not only can you feast your eyes on the eternal ice you even have the unique opportunity to touch it and walk on it! The trail, which is suitable for pushchairs, begins at Morteratsch Station. It takes roughly 50 minutes to walk up to the milky glacial lake and the gigantic ice tongue. En route you can listen to highly interesting audio texts, peppered with historical anecdotes, available via the free Bernina Glacier app or by scanning the QR codes on the 16 information boards along the Morteratsch Glacier Trail. There is even a Morteratsch children s book, Sabis grosser Traum (Sabi s Big Dream), containing stories from the unique and exciting world of the glacier. At each of the information points along the trail, there are fun tasks for families to solve together and a free booklet to write your answers in. At the end of your trip, you ll receive a little surprise if you show your answers at the Pontresina Tourist Information desk. The booklets are available from Pontresina Tourist Information, the reception desk at Hotel Saratz, the Morteratsch campsite and the exhibition cheese dairy in Pontresina. Really cheesy? You bet! Alp Nova, the Alpine exhibition cheese dairy in Morteratsch, is open to visitors from the beginning of July through to the beginning of October. Here you can watch traditional cheese-making processes close-up. Watch the master cheesemaker at work as he makes Heutaler, Gletschermutschli, and Alpziger cheeses on an open fire. In front of the dairy is a welcoming rest area with a rabbit enclosure and a children s play area. From Pontresina, the Alpine exhibition cheese dairy is a 20-minute cycle ride or a 70-minute walk. Morteratsch Alpine exhibition cheese dairy is a five-minute walk from Morteratsch Station. Which is why we pay such special attention to our most challenging guests and their many needs because we believe this, and to go that extra mile: in the Saratz play paradise, in the restaurants, in the rooms, and outside on daily discovery tours through the Engadine. Your next adventure, for example, could be: PONTRESINA HIGH ROPE COURSE The Pontresina high rope course will keep you on your toes: balancing, rolling, rocking, climbing, crawling! Rope bridges, zip lines, balance beams and numerous obstacles offer playful challenges for adventurers aged four and above. Children up to the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Before embarking on the course, all participants will receive instruction and safety equipment from an expert and must complete a test run. cool kids ENGADINE VACATION FUN On your marks, get set, have fun! Between July 9 and August 19, the Engadine Vacation Fun Pass offers access to roughly 100 fun and entertaining activities including pizza baking, climbing, discovery tours, sailing, and painting. IBEX PARADISE 1,800 ibex live on Piz Albris, right next to Pontresina! Sometimes these kings of the Alps venture down to the edges of the village to munch the fresh grass. You can experience these fascinating creatures in numerous places in and around Pontresina. On the Ibex promenade at the upper end of the village, for example, the ibex gallery next to the mountain station of the Languard chairlift, or on the ibex playground right next to Alp Languard where the challenge is to climb faster than an ibex! KIDS WORLD AT THE SARATZ The play paradise at the Saratz is open 7 days a week. For our youngest guests (1-3 yrs) we offer a nanny service on 2 half days per week, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Children aged 3 and above will love spending their vacation in the children s play paradise, where different special activities are on offer every day. Once or twice a week, there are also organized activities outside the hotel: an excursion to Val Roseg, a visit to the pump track next to the train station, a tour to Alp Morteratsch and more. For older children who don t require supervision, we provide a Teen Corner with digital games. Teenagers can also play tennis, enjoy the high rope course, hire our mountain bikes or even join their parents on a day trip! 16 SARATZ TERMS & CONDITIONS SARATZ INFORMATION SEASONAL OPENING HOURS At the Saratz, SUMMER begins on June 1, The hotel then remains open through to March 31, SARATZ TERMS & CONDITIONS PRICES All prices are listed in Swiss Francs and include service and VAT. The tourist tax (CHF 3.10 per person per night) is not included. Use of the infrastructure during official opening hours is included. ROOM CANCELLATIONS We handle cancellations of confirmed reservations in accordance with article 160 of the Swiss Code of Obligations: Room reservations may be canceled free of charge up to 15 days before arrival. If you cancel your reservation 14 to 6 days before arrival, we will charge 1 night for each room. Cancellations in the 5 days before arrival are treated as no-show. We will charge for the number of days booked, up to a maximum of 3 days (100% base rate for room/breakfast and additional beds). If you leave earlier and/or arrive later than as per the reservation, this will be treated as no-show and included in the charge unless you inform us in writing of your altered plans at least 15 days before your arrival. Cancellations and/or changes to reservations must be made in writing. We recommend that you take out cancellation cover with Allianz. We will be happy to send you detailed documents. 17 STAFF INTERVIEW FOR ALL EVENTUALITIES SANDRO GRAZIOLI, HEAD OF MAINTENANCE > What brought you to the Saratz? Originally I worked in plumbing, but before coming to the Saratz, I worked in maintenance in a different hotel for 5 years. As soon as I saw the vacancy here, I applied for the job. Sandro Grazioli was born in Italy. He has been head of the four-person Saratz maintenance team since 2002, taking care of the entire infrastructure of Hotel Saratz including the 114,829 ft 2 park grounds of the hotel and two staff houses. > Parts of the building are 145 years old and parts are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Given such contrasts, what are the biggest challenges for you and your team? You never know what s coming next! Each day we begin by looking at the maintenance plan. Then we ll suddenly get a phone call and all our plans get jumbled. The more a guest is affected by the problem, the higher it rises on our priority list. Heating, ventilation, water and steam in the spa area, the park, the Bagnera (the outdoor pool), the sports area, rooms, electric installations or shoveling snow in winter. The unpredictability involved in monitoring and maintaining these areas is the greatest challenge, and affects the old and new parts of the building in equal measure. Light bulbs are the absolute classic we re always changing them. > Where do you get spare parts for the old parts of the building? I ve become quite proficient in using Google. Here I find the bits and pieces I need, spread right across Europe although finding them takes up a lot of time! > What does working at the Saratz mean to you? No sooner have you mixed the paint to touch up a wall, but you get a call to come and open up a room safe where a guest has forgotten their code. You get back, put your apron back on, pick up the brush and the paint bucket, and then the phone rings again... On the other hand, the atmosphere here in the hotel is very friendly and informal, which makes up for a great deal of stress and hectic! 32

19 ART AT THE SARATZ CONTEMPORARY SWISS ART AT HOTEL SARATZ Summer 2018 From the start of June to the end of October, 9 artists exhibit their work in the buildings and park: Silvia Michel Kathrin Severin SUSA Tom Bauer Susan Kopp Elisabeth Schneller Donat Fritschy Peter Gygax Thomas Lüscher In 2018, the summer exhibition will include artwork from 9 artists from across Switzerland. Inside the hotel buildings, four artists exhibit paintings, ink drawings, sketches, and photography. With exhibits large and small, the artwork is thoughtfully grouped to harmonize beautifully, giving each of the rooms an exciting new look. The paintings are complemented by small indoor sculptures. In the hotel park grounds, larger sculptures and objects made of materials such as wood, stone, bronze, iron, glass, plastic, and pottery beautify the landscape and await discovery. The different materials of the sculptures create fascinating contrasts to the nature surrounding them, transforming the park into a walk-through picture book. In different weathers and at different times of day, the sculptures take on a completely new appearance, with shifting light and shadow adding an extra level of vitality. HE NOW MANAGES THE PONTRESINA KÄSLIN BEVERAGES COMPANY FOUNDED BY HIS FATHER, AND HAS BEEN BREWING ENGADINE BEER SINCE 2008 THE LATEST BABY IN THE OLD-ESTABLISHED FAMILY COMPANY. SELLING BEVERAGES AND BREWING BEER DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW THIS WAS WHAT YOU WOULD END UP DOING? Although I completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter, I always knew I would one day take over the company from my parents. But when you finish a day s work in retail, it s not like carpentry you don t actually have anything in your hands that you ve made. Brewing beer allows me to have that experience. FROM CARPENTER TO A SUCCESSFUL BEER BREWER HOW DID YOU DO IT? It all began in 2006, in our kitchen at home, and it was all a bit of fun. Then suddenly the demand from friends and acquaintances started growing, and I began to think more closely about production and the final product. Suddenly I realized and believed I could go one step further and brew beer professionally. Today, our master brewers brew five different sorts of beer, and we produce around 70,000 liters each year on premises rented from the company Conrad Storz. But it s still great fun! REGIONALITY AND COLLABORATION HOW IMPORTANT ARE THEY TO YOU AS A YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR IN PONTRESINA? Very! We work and produce in the region, and for the region. With our products and services, we aim to strengthen hotels and the catering trade in the region by providing distinctive products. Nowadays, tourists often come to us just before they travel back home to stock up on beer and they bring their empties back with them next time they come! We re currently busy planning our own infrastructure to combine our beverage store and brewery under one roof. That s the next step towards our goal: a regionally anchored brewery here in Pontresina. FACTS & FIGURES A few figures from the Saratz kitchens simply amazing! 11,204 bottles of mineral water are consumed each year. The pâtissier uses 1,214 kg butter per year in his pastries. Every year, our guests consume 2,931 kg of beef. 10,900 bottles of wine are enjoyed each year. 39
