1 Dear Traveller, WELCOME Welcome to the March edition of the Maltings Leisure newsletter. IN THIS EDITION Northern Lights await you. Hopefully you ve had a good winter but aren t you getting a bit tired of it? If so we ve got some great trips in the next couple of months to warm you up. But first, we offer to send you somewhere even colder, up close to the arctic circle. It might sound crazy, but winter is the only time to have a good chance to see the Northern Lights due to the long nights. We ve selected three of the best locations Iceland, Norway and Sweden and found you some great places to stay whilst you re there. Those who ve seen them say it s a magical experience, and this year is one of the peaks in the solar cycle that cause the lights to glow. For those of you who like it warmer, we can offer you a couple great places to go. One is in Crete, which will also give you another Easter to celebrate with all the fun that comes with it: Easter eggs for the kids and raki for the grownups. The Northern Lights: peak viewing Seeing the Northern Lights is for many a must do trip at some point in their lives and right now is one of the best chances you have.

2013 is the peak of the 11-year sunspot cycle that causes the auroras to glow in the night skies and winter and spring are the best times to see them due to the longer nights.

The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres. They are known as 'Aurora borealis' in the north and 'Aurora australis' in the south.

The lights appear in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that light up the sky with an eerie glow.

Auroral displays appear in many colours although pale green and pink are the most common. Shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet have been reported.
