About Us Mann Yadanarpon Airlines (MYP) was incorporated as a Myanmar private limited liability company on 23 July 2013, and granted a permit on 27 January 2014 by the Myanmar Investment Commission to operate air transportation services on both domestic and international routes. Our Network Our destinations for the current winter season are Yangon, Mandalay, Nyaung-U (Bagan), Heho (Inle Lake), Tachileik, Kengtung, Myitkyina, Lashio, Thandwe (Ngapali), Sittwe, Loikaw, Khamti, Mawlamyine, Dawei, Myeik, Kawthaung and Chiang Mai. All of our destinations are of tourism and/or commercial significance. We will expand our network to more domestic destinations after acquiring additional aircraft. We plan to commence regional operations after we have consolidated our domestic operations. Our Fleet Our current fleet consists of two new ATR aircraft which were delivered on 31 January and 1 April 2014 respectively. We plan to acquire additional ATR aircraft in the near future in order to expand our network. An Airbus A-320 aircraft will be leased for our future planned regional operations. 6 Yadanarpon

7 Our Flight Crew Our pilots are all qualified on ATR aircraft type. All our pilots training are carried out at the ATR Training Centers in Toulouse, France and Singapore, with recurrent and type rating simulator training at ATR approved facilities in Bangkok, Thailand Our Cabin Crew Our cabin crew training and administration managers and supervisors hold cabin crew instructor certificates from the ATR Training Center in Toulouse, France. All of our cabin crew have attended the Airline Cabin Crew Training Course approved by the Department of Civil Aviation. Our Engineering Crew Our licensed aircraft maintenance engineers have type ratings on ATR from the ATR Training Centers in Touluse, France and Singapore. Maintenance of our aircraft is carried out by our own Approved Maintenance Organization approved by the Department of Civil Aviation, Base maintenance is outsourced to approved maintenance, repair and overhaul organizations (MROS). 14 MYANMAR FESTIVAL GUIDE: NOVEMBER-FEBRUARY As Myanmar enjoys its best weather of the year, it also reaches peak celebration season. Toward the tail end of the monsoon, Thadingyut ushers in a flurry of festivals, both secular and religious, that run right through to the Thingyan water festival in April. Don t know your Kahtein from your Kachin Manaw, or your Tazaungdaing from your Tabodwe? Read on for our handy guide to the biggest festivals over the next four months. Most of the festivals are based around Myanmar s lunar calendar, so the date in the Western calendar shifts each year the following dates are for only. THADINGYUT (OCTOBER 16) While not in November this year, the full moon of Thadingyut is still worth noting because it kick-starts the festival season. The full moon marks the end of war-dwin often referred to as Buddhist Lent during which Buddhists refrain from getting married or moving house. Thadingyut is also known as the festival of lights, and is often marked with lanterns and fireworks. A number of pagoda festivals are held in the days and weeks leading up to the full moon, including the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda festival, which sees four of the pagoda's five Buddha images placed on a barge and towed around the lake s many villages. 14 Yadanarpon

15 TAZAUNGDAING (NOVEMBER 11) In case one festival of lights wasn t enough, Myanmar backs it up with a second on the full moon of Tazaungmone. The festival is referred to as Tazaungdaing, and like Thadingyut is marked around the country. Taunggyi in Shan State attracts tens of thousands for its annual balloon festival, during which decorated hot air balloons take off from a site on the edge of town. NATIONAL DAY (NOVEMBER 24) While it never lost gazetted holiday status, for many years National Day was downplayed due to its association with student protests. Since Myanmar s transition, however, it has once again been marked in a meaningful manner. The day recognises the 1920 student strike in Yangon, which was launched by students angry at a new University Act. It quickly expanded and drew in many non-students, becoming a focal point for anger at colonial rule. CHRISTMAS DAY (DECEMBER 25) In many countries, Christmas has become as much a secular as religious holiday. Not so in Myanmar, where you ll find little evidence of Christmas sales or gift-giving from Santa s sack. Instead, expect Christmas carolers and night-long ceremonies at the country s churches. In Chin, Kachin and Kayin states, where Christians are a majority or near-majority, the festival is celebrated with particular fervor. Yadanarpon 15

16 NEW YEAR FESTIVALS Many ethnic minority groups have New Year festivals around the same time as the secular New Year. These include Kayin New Year on December 29, Kachin Manaw on January 10 and the Naga New Year in mid-january. Naga New Year Festival Kachin Manaw Festival INDEPENDENCE DAY (JANUARY 4) Marking the moment that Myanmar (then known as Burma) regained its sovereignty after decades of British colonial rule, Independence Day is celebrated with both reverence and sadness. The sadness derives from the fact that the widely held dream for a peaceful and prosperous nation have only rarely been realised, due to a combination of ethnic conflict, dictatorship and economic stagnation. UNION DAY (FEBRUARY 12) In recent months you might have heard about something called the 21 st Century Panglong. Confused? Well, it derives from the Panglong Agreement, an understanding between independence hero Bogyoke Aung San and leaders of several (but not all) key ethnic minority groups, that was signed on February 12, This paved the way for independence, as the British had stipulated that minorities needed to give their assent to join the new nation of Burma. Sadly, many of the promises that Panglong embodied were never realised. Shortly after taking office in March 2016, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi revived the Panglong name for the peace process, perhaps hoping to recapture some of the optimism of Yadanarpon

20 LEGENDS OF INDAWGYI LAKE RJ Vogt Kachin State is renowned for its drastic landscapes and stunning people. Many Myanmar movie stars and singers hail from the region, which is also rich in jade and gold. A lesser-known attraction is the sprawling expanse of Indawgyi Lake, one of Southeast Asia s largest natural lakes. Nearly 100 square miles of water make it an ideal landing strip for the thousands of migratory birds that head south from northern Asia every year. 20 Yadanarpon

22 Despite all its riches, travellers have long kept clear of the region due to ethnic-based conflict in the surrounding hills. Decades of jungle warfare between the Kachin Independence Army and the Myanmar Tatmadaw continue to the present day, with the Kachin group boycotting the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement signed in A few areas are approved for visits, but large swaths of the lake and surrounding wildlife protected area are out of bounds for foreigners. As a result, travelling to Indawgyi and staying at the rustic Lonton village near its southwestern shore is an adventure known only to a small, enterprising group of tourists. The trip offers one of those rare Myanmar experiences that combine authenticity and challenge. GETTING THERE Upon checking in to my hotel in Myitkyina, the state capital, I was promptly handed a list of townships I was allowed to visit, as well as areas to avoid. Fortunately, the global environmental group Flora and Fauna International have developed a local eco-tourism group known as Inn Chit Thu, or Lovers of the Lake, that has established a network of activities for the intrepid adventurer. Lonton village has thumbs-up status from the government. Before I could start kayaking the dark waters or cycling along the lakeshore, however, my companion and I had to manage the trip from Myitkyina to the reserve, a journey of roughly 170 kilometres through the verdant forests of Kachin State. Stunning vistas appear at seemingly every turn, and once you accept the hazardous road conditions as part of the fun, the trip begins to feel less ominous and more exhilarating. 22 Yadanarpon

23 Most travellers opt for the old railroad line that runs from the capital to Hopin. An upper-class ticket should cost less than K2000, offering passengers a cheap ride but slow ride that takes between six and eight hours. From Hopin s train station, truck lorries labour over the nearby mountains and into the reserve. It s a bumpy journey, lasting between one and three hours, and the experience of bouncing along in a truckbed through roadside villages and past soaring drop-offs is no doubt memorable (as well as cost effective, at less than K4000 one way). But if, like us, you prefer easy route, you can hire a car from Myitkyina to Lonton. Expect to pay about K250,000 for a big car and you ll want a big car with additional charges for each extra day you stay in the village. Although pricey, it s worth it if you re strapped for time: the driver can get you from city to village in less than five hours, around half the time of the traintruck combo. Along the way you ll probably encounter errant water buffalo, resolute in their determination to move as slowly as possible when in front of motor vehicles. Kachin children playing football in the dense grass will blur past the windows, interspersed with the cows, pigs and occasional oxen that reflect the region s agrarian lifestyle. The last leg of the route is the most precarious, as the road to Indawgyi winds into the mountains surrounding the lake. Stunning vistas appear at seemingly every turn, and once you accept the hazardous road conditions as part of the fun, the trip begins to feel less ominous and more exhilarating (just don t look down). The road levels out as you drive through Maing Naung, a small gold-mining village at the bottom corner of the lake. Kaung Tong Yadanarpon 23

24 Indaw Mahar Guesthouse Creek, once a roaring tributary of clear water, is a muddy reminder of the very dangers that groups such as Inn Chit Thu are trying to stop the mining is causing sedimentation in the lake, and already scores of lake acres have been compromised by the silt. Those acres are out of sight when you reach Lonton, just a few minutes north of Maing Naung, which harbours a much different feel than its gold-minded counterpart. Lonton has the only guesthouse in the area: Indaw Mahar. A quaint white building set just a few hundred feet from the edge of the lake, its price (K10,000 per bed) reflects its level of amenities expect thin mattresses and bare rooms. No matter we didn t come here for the Wi-Fi. We came, as most do, for the scenery, and Indaw Mahar delivers on all fronts. The back deck, where backpackers mingle with bird watchers and kayaking enthusiasts, offers a shockingly beautiful panaroma of the lake s immensity. Young fishermen drift slowly across your vision as rare birds swoop in and out of the clouds strung like cobwebs across the mountains. Standing on the deck after arriving, an acute sensation of otherworldliness spread across my skin. To get out on the water, hop over to Inn Chit Thu to rent kayaks. The building is a short walk from Indaw Mahar, and volunteers inside can set you up with a map and equipment. When we visited, they only had one two-person kayak, 24 Yadanarpon

27 which had already been rented out (K15,000), as well as a fleet of oneperson kayaks. One volunteer outlined the best routes around the lake. Because of its immense size, all the routes remain in the narrow southern tip. They vary in length from 30 to 90 minutes, and he advised taking binoculars or a camera to spot the rare birds flying overhead. SHWE MYITZU PAGODA I m not the only one who feels something mystical about this place: Each year, thousands of Buddhist pilgrims make a similar trek to the lake in order to visit the Shwe Myitzu Pagoda Festival, held in the lead up to the full moon of Tabaung (normally March). The story goes like this: A long, long time ago, the Buddha visited the jungle in what is now the heart of Myanmar s northernmost state, Kachin. There he met a hermit who refused to welcome him. As a result, the Buddha predicted that, generations later, a great city known as See Khan would sprawl across the valley. The rude hermit would be reincarnated as the king of the Shwe Myitzu Pagoda Yadanarpon 27

28 Sanctuary Signage Inn Chit Thu class Shwe Myitzu Pagoda city, and it would be a sinful and hedonistic land, displeasing to the universe. The Enlightened One s prediction then came true, and the kingdom s poor behaviour so enraged the nats, or animist spirits, that they flooded the city. Believers hold that a widow named Daw Ei Moon listened to the spirits and rescued her family and many animals by leaving before the Great Flood. A small shrine, the Mote Soma Pagoda, or Widow Pagoda, still stands as testament to her actions today. It s strikingly similar to the Judeo- Christian narrative of Noah s Ark. But the Indawgyi area remains resolutely Buddhist, unlike much of the rest of state, where the Kachin were converted by Christian missionaries in the 18 th and 19 th centuries. Shwe Myitzu is the holiest Buddhist site in the state. The gleaming floating pagoda didn t come into existence until many generations after the Great Flood, in 1858, when a monk named Ashin U Nyi Thu had a vision that a pagoda should be built in the lake. He gathered donations, even travelling to Yangon s storied Shwedagon Pagoda to collect a Buddha hair for the pagoda s base. It is this pagoda, which seems to float in the middle of the lake and is only reachable by boat for much of the year, that attracts so many Buddhists. On its festival day during dry season the waters are low enough for the magical path to reappear from beneath the depths, allowing scores of faithful to cross on dry land. When I visited, in the depths of monsoon season, an affable boatman ferried us across the lake. Only a handful of other visitors explored the pagoda, posing for selfies on the edge of the platform and what feels like the edge of the world. 28 Yadanarpon

32 Panoramic view of the Malikha River from Malikha Lodge Among the earliest Western visitors to this area was British botanist Frank Kingdon-Ward, whose long expeditions into the mountains from the 1930s to 1950s resulted in the documentation of dozens of plant species hitherto unknown to science. More recently, American biologist Alan Rabinowitz detailed his encounters with the region s dwindling population of Tarong pygmies in the book Beyond the Last Village (2001). And then there is the legendary Mount Hkakaborazi, long deemed the highest peak in Southeast Asia but whose elevation somewhere above 19,000 feet has never been precisely measured. It was first climbed in 1996 by Japanese mountaineer Takashi Ozaki and Tibetan-born Nyima Gyaltsen. During an all-myanmar expedition in August 2014, two team members transmitted a GPS signal from near the summit but failed to survive the descent. A National Geographic expedition set out in late 2014 with the aim of measuring the elevation but were forced to turn back just short of their goal. Of course not everyone who visits northern Kachin State s gateway town of Putao is a hardcore explorer intent on summiting a dangerous peak or discovering new orchids. In fact, there are adventures available to match the abilities of just about every kind of active traveller, from easy hikes on the flat terrain to mountain expeditions that can take up to three weeks. Putao is located on a sprawling plain about 50 miles (80 kilometres) south of where the high mountains begin, and the flatlands offer plenty of great options for modest adventures in the form of four- or five-day soft adventure treks through villages that are home to ethnic Yadanarpon

These hikes pass through settlements of wooden houses, bamboo fences, stone walls, verdant gardens and agricultural land: One village merges into the next, sometimes separated by streams or rivers, sometimes blending across invisible borders. Other parts of the valley feature wide-open rice fields where horses roam free; forestland where birds sing in the trees; and clear streams where ice-cold mountain water trickles over rocks and through meadows. 34 The Malikha River, a tributary of the Ayeyarwady River Among the more picturesque settlements in the area is the Khamti Shan village of Kaung Mu Lon, home to one of the most revered Buddhist pagodas in far northern Myanmar and the site of an annual festival each February that brings together area villagers for boat races in the river and horse races along the banks. The nearby peak of Noi Zaw Hill offers a commanding view of Kaung Mu Lon, as well as the crystal-clear Malikha River, which flows south from here to meet the Namkha River near 34 Yadanarpon Lisu ladies in their traditional dress

Lowland treks often begin or end in Machanbaw, home to Rawang, Kachin and Khamti Shan residents, as well as to Bamar civil servants from around the country. The town was also the site of northern Myanmar s original British colonial administration starting in 1913, before Fort Hertz was established in Putao in The remote north was considered a punishment station by the British, a place to send officers who had been banished from Yangon for disciplinary reasons. Remnants of the colonial era are still visible around Machanbaw. Many of the old houses for officers still stand in the middle of town, as does the moldering British Club. This sprawling building is now abandoned, and daylight streams through broken windows and cracked walls. In better condition is the two-storey British Commission House, which is now the Guba Guesthouse. 39 For a relatively small town, Mogok has a big reputation. And it s pretty much down to one thing: precious stones, particularly pigeon-blood rubies. It s often referred to as the Valley of Rubies. About four miles long and two miles wide, the town is flanked by mountain ranges. Although it s on the Shan plateau, it s administratively part of Mandalay Region not surprising when you consider its economic importance. Yadanarpon 39

40 Mogok s rubies are widely considered the world s best, but it s also renowned for its sapphires and other precious and semi-precious stones, such as spinel, aquamarine, onyx, zircon and moonstone. It s a reputation that has built up over centuries. Residents say that Mogok began as a village named Thaphanpin (Fig Tree village) in the year 579 in the Myanmar calendar (1217CE). During the reign of the Momeik Sawbwa (hereditary chief) named Thohanphas, three Shan men got lost while returning home from hunting. They passed the night under a fig tree near the foot of a hill. When dawn arrived, the hunters noticed crows and eagles flying nearby; they checked the spot, and found several red stones. They took the stones and presented them to the Momeik Sawbwa. Recognising that they were precious, he dispatched some people to guard the site. The guards created a village near the fig tree. Over time, the area prospered and became the town of Mogok. Modern Mogok retains a link with the original village; one of its wards is named Thaphanpin. Along with Yepu, Kyauksaung and Kyaukpout, it is traditionally considered one of the richest spots for mining precious stones. Gems have been mined here since the reign of Shan Sawbwas. Later the area came under the control of Myanmar s Konbaung dynasty, and then the British after they deposed King Thibaw. The industry has left a physical mark on the town; the great lake at its centre is not natural, but created during the colonial era by flooding a ruby mine operated by the Burma Ruby Mines Company Limited. 40 Yadanarpon

41 Over the years the mining industry has brought great wealth to the town. There s a saying that if you want to find a rich person, you should come to Mogok. However, some residents doubt whether that is any longer the case. When we were young, Mogok s gem industry was good from the 1960s until 1988 even though it wasn t legal to mine at that time because gems were reserved for the government, said resident U Phone Myint. 42 are rarely found. It s also hard for residents to compete now. You have to invest big money, so only the largest companies and investors can afford to do it. Because of that, most of the young people have left and are doing other jobs. It s only the elders and younger children who are still here, he said. revolves around the gem trade, even if it is diminishing. Previously there were at least four daily markets known as htar pwe, after the small tray on which stones are presented where local and outsiders would come to buy and sell stones: Pankyan (garden) Htar Pwe; Yokeshin Yone (cinema) Htar Pwe; Le Oo Htar Pwe; and West Htar Pwe. Prior to that, mining was done in very small, hand-dug mines known as lay bin kyin (four-sided pits measuring nine square feet). Since the early 1990s, mining has taken place in open cut mines using large machinery. But the sense is that the best stones have already been taken. Young adults leave to find work in Yangon, Mandalay and Myitkyina, as well as Thailand and Malaysia. Few work in mining-related industries, although some have gone to the amber mines in Tanai in Kachin State. In the past, everyone here worked in the gem industry. You could give your gems to anyone to sell everyone was a broker. But it s not like that now, U Phone Myint said. The town s economy still largely Today, though, only the Pankyan and Yokeshin Yone markets still operate; the Yokeshin Yone Htar Pwe runs from 7am to 11am, while the Pankyan Htar Pwe opens from 2pm to 5pm. One big change came after the 1988 uprising, when the new military government opened up the mining industry to investment. In 1990 it began conducting auctions for mining blocks, after which the area began attracting investors and workers from around the country. Gems production is low now, said gem dealer U Tun. If a gem dealer waits in town, he won t get any good gems; the prices will be too high. Dealers need to go out to the villages to find suitable stones. These gems are dug under a system that allows locals to run smaller, privately operated mines. Larger enterprises are joint ventures with the government, and the production goes on sale at gem emporiums in Nay Pyi Taw Yadanarpon Gem traders at the Yoke Shin Yone Htar Pwe

43 A typical open-cut mine at Mogok U Tun said the industry has been in decline for about the past 15 years. As a result, some dealers have given up on rubies and sapphires and instead trade in amber. One new industry in Mogok is tourism. In the past, the government mostly banned visits by foreigners. Since 2013 they have been allowed to come on a permit, which can be arranged by travel companies and hotels. The process takes about a week and costs US$50. For now there are only a few hotels in town that accept foreigners. The best are the long-established Golden Butterfly and newer King Bridge Hotel. Both are a 15-minute drive from downtown. Golden Butterfly is set on hundreds of acres of forest and features bungalows, a swimming pool and stunning mountain views. Rooms are priced from US$70 to $130 a night. The 200-kilometre journey from Mandalay to Mogok takes about six hours. There are two routes the old road, which heads north out of Mandalay through Thabeikkyin Township, and the new road, which goes via Pyin Oo Lwin. Both are in good condition, and offer a journey of similar length. Visitors can see the gem markets and to some extent the mining process, but Mogok has quite a bit more to offer. Its population of about 150,000 is diverse, including large Shan, Lisu, Palaung, Indian and Nepali (Gurkha) communities. Because it's at an elevation of 1170 metres (3840 feet), the weather is cool year round, and very cold at night from December to February. A night market in the centre of town is a focal point for locals and visitors alike, and is a good opportunity to taste traditional Shan food. 44 One attraction outside Mogok is the historic British war cemetery at Ywar Thar Yar, a village formally known as Bernard Town that is about 16 kilometres (10 miles) north of downtown. The cemetery features more than 20 headstones from the late 19 th century, shortly after the British captured upper Today the cemetery is overgrown and many of the headstones are damaged. The winding mountain road to Ywar Thar Yar offers stunning views over Mogok. One spot, known as Lay Pauk (wind hole), affords the best sightseeing, according to residents, although at many times of the year particularly in the morning it is thick with mist. Shortly before the Ywar Thar Yar cemetery is a market, named Bernard market, held once every five days, drawing residents from across the area. There is also a range of festivals celebrated throughout the year, Bungalows at Golden Butterfly Hotel including, of course, the Thingyan New Year festival in April. We still celebrate Kahtain in November and famous pagoda festivals, said U Phone Myint. Chan Thar Gyi Pagoda festival is celebrated every February and Maha Muni Pagoda festival every March. These pagodas are famous sites. While the gem mining industry is considered to be on the decline, Mogok s potential as a tourism destination means the town could still have a bright future. 46 TASTING THE FOUR CORNERS By Richard Richardson Once upon a time actually not so very long ago ethnic cuisine wasn t that common in Yangon: Shan noodles and Rakhine mone ti weren t dishes that the city s resident s chowed down every day. Well, things have changed. Yangon is fast becoming a foodie centre, and it s undoubtedly the best place to try the broad range of dishes that emanate from the different corners of the country. 47 Shan Yoe Yar SHAN YOE YAR As it s name suggests, Shan Yoe Yar is ground zero for dishes from Shan State. Its extensive menu somehow manages to do justice to the state's epic scale, from Inle Lake and Taunggyi in the south to Lashio in the north and Kengtung in the east. The hardest part here is knowing where to start. While you re pondering what to order, admire the amazing renovated teak mansion that you re dining in, with its immaculate decorations. Such a building was not unusual in Yangon a few decades ago, but most teak mansions in the downtown area have long ago been demolished and replaced by apartments, making Shan Yoe Yar a wonder to behold. Once you ve got over that wonder, get stuck into the menu. Of course, there are the noodles the Kengtung noodles are particularly delicious but make sure you try the wide range of salads, curries and stir-fries on offer. 48 RTH RANGOON TEA HOUSE RTH RTH But it s Burmese, not ethnic food, I hear you say. Well, guess what? The Burmese are an ethnic group too. And if you want to taste some great Burmese food, then head to Rangoon Tea House, on the first floor of a renovated colonial-era building on atmospheric Pansodan Street. No, it s not like mum made it, and it s not like aunty on the street corner makes it, but it tastes damn good. Everyone has their own favourite on the menu, but for me its the deliciously sweet and spicy pork bao and the mango pickle pork curry. Oh, and the duck empenadas. 49 TAING YIN THAR Rather than presenting the cuisine of one ethnic group, Taing Yin Thar takes on the ambitious task of offering up the best dishes from right across the country. It seems like mission impossible, but the restaurant does an admirable job. Taing Yin Thar has evidently found a loyal following, as the owners have now opened a second outlet to go with the original on Parami Road. There are plenty of highlights on the menu, including the Shan-style chicken salad, Rakhine spicy prawn curry and Burmese-style sweet pork curry. No 5/A, corner of May Kha Road and Parami Road, Mayangone Township No 2/A, Kanbe Road, Yankin Township And a few more for the adventurous: ROOT Most of us are not likely to visit the Wa region of Shan State, so we might as well do the next best thing, which is eat at root. Established by two sisters, Root s dishes pack a spicy but tasty punch. 50 Yandabo: NOT YOUR AVERAGE VILLAGE Lann Say Thaw Few villages with barely 1000 residents can claim a place in the national psyche, but Yandabo is not your average riverside settlement. Located on the banks of the Ayeyarwady River in Myingyan township, Yandabo is more than a picturesque village. Here, in February 1826, the British and Burmese empires signed an historic agreement known as the Yandabo Treaty ending their first war, which had raged for two years. The agreement led to the ceding of much territory to the British, including Rakhine State and Tanintharyi Region, and marked the start of the long decline of the independent Burmese state under the royal family Yadanarpon Yandabo Home

52 Yandabo Home Yandabo Home Yandabo Home Yadanarpon But the village has cultural significance today, as a centre for a pot-making industry that exports its wares to much of the country. Getting there is not necessarily easy, with a boat being the most comfortable option. Expect a half-day journey downriver from Mandalay, after which you can sleep in the village or on the boat. Alternatively, the village is about four hours upriver from Bagan. Those coming by road should brace themselves for a rough, five-hour trip. At first the going is smooth, travelling south through Mandalay to Tada-U and west through the Myothar Industrial Zone to Semikhon port. From here, you pass through a succession of villages, before travelling along a field embankment and arriving at Yandabo. The route can be treacherous, and a guide is advised if you come by road. Alternatively, you can drive directly to Myingyan, and then head off the main road toward Yandabo, but this way is equally if not more gruelling. Shortly before arriving at the village gates, the dust is punctuated by a whitewashed memorial stone marking the signing of the treaty. The entrance to the village marks a period of cool and calm. The affability and honesty can see be seen clearly on the faces of residents. The 250 households in Yandabo are split between northern and southern sections. The north occupies about 80 homes, and all households earn their living from pottery. The south relies on agriculture, including cultivation of peanuts, onions and beans.

Labourers can expect to take home K5000 a day, and even children and the elderly are engaged in work at peak times of the year. This helps stem the outward migration of workers that plagues many rural areas in I am a high school graduate, and so are my younger sister and niece. We are just happy making pots here for our living. This is our traditional work and earns enough to cover our living costs," says Ma Mar Mar Htwe, 30. The main ingredient in pottery is clay and this is ordered from a site about 3.2 kilometres (2 miles) from the village. The workshops store it for a year before it is used; normally during winter or summer, with work scaled back or stopped during rainy season. "We re working nearly every day, every month and every year. We even get orders directly from hotels, Ma Mar Mar Htwe says. Residents believe the village has been making pots for more than 200 years, with the skills handed down from one generation to the next. They are unsure as to why they are the only village in the area Yadanarpon 73 53

54 Yandabo Home with this industry, but say it could be a combination of proximity to both a good source of clay, and the river for transport. An estimated 800,000 pots are made in Yandabo each year and exported by boat to towns in Mandalay, Sagaing and Magwe regions, as well as Yangon and the Ayeyarwady delta. The industry ensures the village is always a hive of activity, with finished pots laid out to dry in the sun. In the workshops, the workers operate in teams of two, with one running a treadle and another shaping the pot as it spins. But the village is also picturesque in its own right. It features large, shady trees, and a century-old monastery and school. There s also the riverside life to observe, and the life of the farmers. "Our village is just a small place, says villager U Ba Chit, 86. But it s definitely a famous one. A boutique hotel called "Yandabo Home" has recently opened at the Yandabo village on the Ayeyarwady riverside for those who want to stay over and explore more of the village and its surroundings. 54 Yadanarpon

The city s downtown area contains wondrous reminders of the colonial era but is modernising fast. New bars, restaurants and fascinating galleries are thriving in the post-military rule era. What slight charm Yangon has lost in the country s recent and sharp progress is more than made up for in the explosion of places to eat and drink. MANDALAY Often and fairly described as the cultural capital of Myanmar, Mandalay is a vastly different city to either bustling Yangon or the national capital Nay Pyi Taw. For many tourists Mandalay is the stepping off point for a tour of the country s peak tourist attractions the stupa-dotted plains of Bagan and the idyllic Inle Lake. But the city offers so many of its own attractions that it s easy enough to spend a couple of days there, although it s best to plan ahead and do sightseeing outside of the hottest hours in the afternoon because the weather can be intense. Mandalay has many fascinating religious sites such as the Mahamuni Pagoda and Mandalay Hill, but there is also the Royal Palace and cultural attractions such as handweaving of silk and cotton, stone carving, goldworking shops and bronze casting. Further afield are the ancient capitals of Amarapura, Sagaing, Ava and Mingun. Of these, Mingun is considered unmissable, with its incredible brick pagoda and giant bronze bell sure to catch the eye of visitors. 64 Yadanarpon

65 BAGAN (Nyaung U) Bagan is arguably the country s peak tourist destination, and for good reason it s one of the richest archeological sites in the region and contains more than 2000 pagodas, temples and religious sites. The zone also has some of the best hotels in Myanmar, while one company offers balloon flights that provide stunning bird s eye views of the plain. Other attractions include a golf course and horse riding tours. One of the best aspects of Bagan is the ease of getting there: visitors can fly into the Nyaung U airport, catch a bus from Mandalay or Yangon, hire a car to drive or hop on one of a number of boats and cruise there from Mandalay. INLE LAKE (Heho) While almost as popular with visitors as Bagan, Inle Lake is a very different kind of attraction one where tourists are obliged to kick up their heels, relax and enjoy the scenery. The lake, which is nestled into the Shan plateau, is the second largest natural water body in Myanmar and more than 1000 metres above sea level. Best known for its floating gardens and iconic ethnic Intha boatmen, Inle Lake offers visitors boating tours of the villages out on the water, as well as the silver and goldsmiths, and weavers who live and work there. Visitors can choose to stay in hotels on the water, in the township of Nyaung Shwe or around the edges of the lake. Yadanarpon 65

66 Mann Yadanarpon Airlines Destinations KYAING TONG (Kengtung) Kyaing Tong is the heart of the Golden Triangle a hilly region where Laos, Thailand and Myanmar meet. It is a trekking oasis for travellers, both from Myanmar and abroad. The hard-to-reach hills are home to an extremely diverse mix of ethnic groups including the Akha, Lahu, Eng and Shan. Similarly diverse are the religions practiced by the different groups it s easy to see small villages of one ethnic group in close proximity but separated by religion, be it Buddhism, Christianity or Animism. And within the town are the usual religious sites Buddha images in different positions, churches and pagodas that you can find in nearly every town in Further afield is the former casino town of Mong-La, which is notable today for its museum dedicated to the government s efforts to halt opium production. TACHILEIK A famous border town between Myanmar and Thailand, Tachileik is popular with tourists in Thailand who need to visit another country to get their visas renewed. A small replica of Yangon s Shwedagon Pagoda sits on a small hill overlooking the town. 67 MYEIK The Tanintharyi Region town of Myeik was a busy seaport during the colonial era and remains an important commerce town today. As well as hosting a large fishing fleet that trawls the Myeik Archipelago, Myeik is famous for the bird s nests harvested from shore-front buildings and the caves on its islands, as well as the pearling industry. However, there is plenty more to like about Myeik, including its incredible collection of colonial-era houses and buildings, many of which remain family homes or businesses today. DAWEI A formerly sleepy town in southern Tanintharyi Region, Dawei has lately become famous as the hub of a massive special economic zone and deepsea port proposed by Thailand. As well as its delicious fruits pineapples, mangoes, mangosteens and durian Dawei is also a major hub for other agricultural produce such as rubber, palm oil and cashew. Iconic Maungmakan Beach, where fishermen cast their nets only metres offshore is also close to the town, while the untouched wonder of the Myeik Archipelago is only a boatride away. KAWTHAUNG Kawthaung is Myanmar s southernmost main town and sits at the mouth of Kyan River on the Malay Peninsula with the Thai border town or Ranong to its near east. Like Tachileik, Kawthaung is popular with foreigners living in Thailand who need to exit the country to renew their visa. But Kawthaung is so much more than that it s the most common destination to embark on one of the liveaboard boats that explore the wonders of the Myeik Archipelago, including its nearly untapped diving spots and deserted islands. 68 Mann Yadanarpon Airlines Destinations THANDWE (Ngapali Beach) Ngapali beach, in Rakhine State s Thandwe township, offers white sand beaches, delicious seafood and perfect relaxation. While other beach getaways such as Ngwe Saung are catching up, Ngapali has an ace up its sleeve it s less than 45 minutes by plane from Yangon, compared with five hours by car to Ngwe Saung. Most of Ngapali s hotels are located inside a wide and protected cove, making for smooth, calm and safe swimming. On the downside, once you re in Ngapali it is difficult to get around. However, small beachfront or roadside restaurants serving the area s fresh seafood and cheap cocktails have sprung up around all of the hotels, so travelling far won t be on the minds of too many visitors. SITTWE (Mrauk Oo) The Rakhine State capital Sittwe is the gateway to the ancient city of Mrauk Oo, the former centre of a flourishing Rakhine empire. Mrauk Oo reached its peak in the 15 th century and today has a completely different atmosphere to Myanmar s other ancient sites. It is an interesting alternative site to Bagan. Be one of the first to discover these ancient temples, which are accessible from Sittwe by a picturesque boat ride up the surging Kaladan River. Chine villages, home to women with tattooed faces, can be visited by continuing further up the Lemro river from Mrauk Oo. 68 Yadanarpon

69 KHAMTI Located high in the upper reaches of the Chindwin River, Khamti is an emerging destination that so far sees few visitors. That could change now that travel restrictions on foreign visitors have been largely lifted (some restrictions apply outside the town). While accommodation and other amenities are still basic, the beauty of the surrounding area more than compensates, with the Naga towns of Lahe and Layshi the main attractions. Many visitors choose to fly to Khamti and then take a slow boat back down the river, passing through Homalin, Mawlaik and Kalewa. LASHIO Another attraction within Shan State, Lashio is the largest town in northern Shan State and a key stop on the road that links Myanmar with China. For visitors Lashio offers motorcycle treks and hiking tours into the nearby mountains. MYITKYINA Myitkyina is the capital of northernmost Kachin State, nearly 1500 kilometres from Yangon and even 785 to the north of Mandalay. The city is in a flat valley that is scorching hot during the summer months and sees intense rains during the monsoon. The city sits at the western bank of the mighty Ayeyarwady River, about 40 kilometres downstream from where the river begins. Myitkyina is the terminus of the railway line and a crucial trading and administrative town within Kachin State. The city is also an important location for other touristic ventures in Kachin State. It can be reached by rail, boat or air but while the railway might sound a romantic idea be warned that a one-way trip from Mandalay will take at least 24 hours. Yadanarpon 69

72 Myanmar Travel Tips With Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities and dozens of different ethnicities, Myanmar offers travellers a rich tapestry of peoples and cultures to explore. It's possible to plan a one-day intinerary that exposes you to food and traditions with origins in China 'and India and Rakhine and Shan states. While many local practices feature in other societies elsewhere in South and Southeast Asia, however, there are numerous ways in which daily life here is unique and a few business practices that may surprise even the welltravelled visitor. You'll be in good shape if you plan ahead and respect and embrace Myanmar ways. Here are a few things you should keep in mind: Always carry cash. A combination of crisp, new American bills in addition to a good supply of Myanmar notes is a necessity. Shopkeepers will sometimes demand payment in American bills but refuse to accept ones that are dogeared or torn. The same goes for money changers. If you're travelling outside the major centres, there may be limited or no access to ATM machines. Try the local transport options. In Yangon, riding in a trishaw, also known as a side car, might rightly be perceived as a dangerous proposition. But in smaller centres they're often an effective and fun mode of transport. They're also much more comfortable than they first appear. You can also try pony carts in places like Bagan and Pyin Oo Lwin, and boat rides at Inle Lake. In Yangon, consider riding the circle train. A complete threehour loop for a foreigner costs about US$1 and gives you a slow, scenic view of various townships. It's okay to bargain, but don't be a cheapskate. In informal transactions, such as at a wet market or negotiating a taxi fare, it's acceptable to bargain for a lower price. The best strategy is to be friendly and consider whether the price you expect will cause your driver or shopkeeper to lose money. Keep in mind that guidebooks go out of date quickly, so a price listed in a guide from just two years ago may not represent today's fair prices. Buses are a great way to travel, but go prepared. While there are an increasing number of short-haul budget flights available inside Myanmar, some places are still most easily and comfortably accessible by buses. For a few extra dollars, a V1P bus will be equipped with airconditioning and extra-wide seating. The food available on board and at rest stops, however, leaves something to be desired. If you want to avoid oily or overpriced fare, stock up before you go on bottled water and snacks. Take a taxi. Standard practice in places like Yangon is to negotiate the fare in advance, since most cars are not equipped with meters and those with meters do not use them. If you don't know what the fare to your destination should be, inquire beforehand with a local or staff at your hotel. Short trips may be as little as K1500, while K4000 should cover a significant distance, depending on traffic and time of day. Expect to pay more after 10pm, but it's reasonable to bargain if you suspect the first-named price is too much. Forage for your breakfast. Many hotels will provide a complimentary breakfast. It might be convenient, but you're missing out. At street stalls, you can find local breakfast specialties such as mohinga, a fish and noodle curry, and an array of fresh fruits and juices. Tea shops, offer strong cups of milky laphet yey (literally, tea water) and various pastries such as samoosas or Chinese steamed pork buns, depending on the ethnicity of the owners. Be in control of your sugar and monosodium glutimate (MSG) intake. First-time visitors to Myanmar are somerimes shocked by the amount of sugar mat locals consume in the form of beverages like tea with condensed milk and fruit juice. Expect that your fresh banana or watermelon smoothie will have a heaping tablespoon of sweetener in it, unless you request otherwise. The way to ask for less sugar is tha jar shob htet par. Similarly, some restaurants add MSG to their food. The way to ask for no MSG is ar cho mhote rna htet ne. Book hotels and guest houses in advance. This is especially wise if you're travelling in peak season. The number of expected tourists to Myanmar has gone up tremendously in me past couple of years, to 3 million in Almough investors are pouring money into the tourism industry, for the moment the supply of hotel rooms is modest. You might consider booking through a travel agent, of which there are many in Yangon and Mandalay. A travel agent can help you save time and stress. Pack a few basic essentials everywhere: Sunscreen, insect repellant, ear plugs and a headlamp or fashlight. As in other parts of Asia, you can find sunscreen and insect spray in local shops and supermarkets but not many of the brands that you would find in Western countries. Bring your own if you want quality assurance. Earplugs are a necessity if you plan to be travelling by bus - most play hours of pop music videos or soap operas, sometimes until wee hours of the morning. A headlamp will save you trouble on days of unexpected power outages, on treks and, in small towns, the hours just before and after dark when electricity may not be available. 72 Yadanarpon

73 Off the beaten path really is remote. Be aware that some towns and villages may not have any services geared toward tourists, except for a couple small snack shops. If you're going into areas less accustomed to tourists, plan ahead and be prepared to rough it. Hsipaw, Namshan and Putao, for example, are great places to go trekking. But if you're looking for hot showers and a choice of dinner plans, these places may not be for you. Plan for the season. For most activities, the best time to visit Myanmar is the cool season between November and February. But if you're visiting during the rainy season, June to September, try Upper Myanmar - the plains region of Bagan and Mandalay - which stays relatively dry. If you are visiting in the cool season, also be aware that Bagan and northern regions like Shan State will be chilly enough that you'll want to pack pants, layers and a jacket. How you dress is how you will be judged. Dress across Myanmar tends to the conservative side. You won't see local ladies wearing sleeveless tops, even at me beach, and only in big cities will some girls sport mini skirts or leggings. Expect some extra attention, or reluctant service in small shops, if you do. When visiting a temple or monastery, opt for long pants or the traditional longyi, covered shoulders and no cleavage. Otherwise you may be denied entry or, if you're lucky, you can loan a longyi. A kissing sound will get a waiter's attention. It might seem like a rude thing to do, but whether you're at a tea shop or a beer station, you'll hear locals pucker their lips and make a sound like a catcall to order a beverage or get the bill. By using portable electronic devices in aircraft both in flight and on the ground, the radio signals transmitted from these devices can interfere with the navigational and communication equipment that may jeopardize aircraft safety. Therefore, as Myanmar is a Contracting State of ICAO, the Department of Civil Aviation has decided to follow the international convention and prohibit the use of portable electronic devices in public transport aircraft during the entire flight.
