It's the East Coast's answer to Las Vegas, and home to many of the same names: Caesars, Bally's, Sands, the Tropicana. Tourists come by the millions (more than 35 million of them, to be exact) to try their luck at the city's 12 casinos, 9 of which line the world's first oceanfront boardwalk, opened in The city itself began life in 1854 and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2004 with a lot of fanfare. Distances Atlantic City is 100 kms from Philadelphia, 220 kms from New York, and 310 kms from Washington, DC. It is roughly a 10 hour drive from Montreal and 11 hours from Toronto. Ferries Cape May Lewes Ferry offers a 70-minute ferry ride between Cape May, New Jersey and Lewes, Delaware. Operates year round. Buses arrive at the safe and relatively new bus station adjacent to the Convention Center at Atlantic and Michigan avenues, 2 blocks from the Boardwalk. Public Transportation - Within the city everything is readily accessible to public transportation on New Jersey Transit buses. The ever popular 13 passenger jitneys move the entire length of Pacific Avenue, parallel to Atlantic City's world famous Boardwalk, to the Marina District and to the Convention Center. You can also catch a ride in an old-fashioned rolling chair. These shaded surreys are rolled up and down the length of the Boardwalk by experienced guides, who are out soliciting riders day and night. Monopoly was created in 1933 by Pennsylvanian Charles Darrow, who used the streets of Atlantic City as the basis for his game board. The early 1800s saw Atlantic City as a desolate island known then only as Absegami, the Native American word for "Little Sea Water." It was nothing but sand, marshes and wilderness. The earliest settlers were two "less than neighborly" hermits: Jeremiah Leeds, grandfather to the famed Jersey Devil, and an early entrepreneur from Philadelphia, civil engineer Dr. Jonathan Pitney. Dr. Pitney saw the potential of the area and started talking it up as an ideal spot to recuperate from the woes of the city, by taking in the healthful salt air. The route of a proposed railway from Camden to the yet unnamed resort in the 1850s fascinated investors, who stepped right up with their money in hand. Now over a hundred years old, Lucy The Elephant was originally built to lure real estate investors to South Atlantic City (now Margate). Since then she has served as a restaurant and even a house. She was restored in the 1970s and moved to her current location at Washington and Atlantic Avenues in Margate, where she has resided ever since as a museum. You can climb to the howdah on Lucy s back for a panoramic view of the ocean, beach and surrounding area. In 2008, Harrah s Entertainment hosted Giada Delaurentiis, Guy Fieri and more for a two day festival that showcased the regions finest wineries, restaurants, culinary personalities and entertainment. Now in 2009, Harrah s Entertainment is partnering with TD Bank and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central & South Jersey Affiliate to create the TD Bank Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival. ATTRACTIONS Beaches Wildlife The beach is where it all started: pristine sand with healthy salt air and a developer who saw the promise it held. Now Atlantic City is one of the world s favorite destinations and the beach differentiates it from any other gaming locale. During the summer, the beaches are guarded by the country s first lifeguard organization and the water is safe thanks to a stringent State water quality program. Millions of guests stroll, ride a bicycle or tour the Boardwalk on a distinctive rolling chair. The first permanent Boardwalk was built in 1870 as a way to keep sand off of hotel carpets. Today, the Boardwalk is more than four miles in length and 60 feet across at its widest points. The present structure is seated on concrete and steel pilings and constructed of thousands of two-by-fours. The boards are replaced approximately every 12 years due to the immense foot traffic. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine rehabilitates stranded sea animals including whales, dolphins, seals and turtles. It offers public visiting hours and features an animal husbandry museum and other educational exhibits. Open to the public on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In season: open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Mondays. Admission is free; donations are appreciated. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge, just across the bay from Atlantic City, features 40,000 acres of coastal salt marshes, upland fields, woodlands and tidal waters. 12 Parks Gardens Lighthouses the refuge is a stopover for more than 200 species of migratory birds. There are footpaths and a driving trail. Open from sunrise to sunset seven days a week. Admission is $4 per vehicle. (609) ; Estell Manor Park in Mays Landing has 1,714 acres of park with nature exhibits, animals, playgrounds, picnic areas, fishing, bike trails, hiking and cross-country skiing. If that weren t enough there are also ruins of Estellville Glassworks and the Bethlehem Loading Company. (609) ; John F. Kennedy Park, located in Somers Point, is a great picnic spot and bayfront beach area with an available boat launch. Located easily on Pacific Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Boulevard is the Civil Rights Garden. It's a one-of-a-kind tribute to the Civil Rights movement. Eleven black African granite columns are etched with quotes from famous Americans. The central column features an upraised hand and a large bronze bell over a reflecting pool. A peaceful spot for reflections The Absecon Lighthouse at Rhode Island and Pacific Avenues in Atlantic City is a historic structure designed by Civil War General George Meade and built in Visitors who climb the 228-step structure are rewarded with a bird s eye view of Atlantic City s dazzling skyline and the back bay area. A photographer s delight, the lighthouse re-opened to the public in early It is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey. The Lighthouse is open September to June: Thursday through Monday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from July to August: seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no charge for visiting the ground floor museum and gift shop. To climb the lighthouse, admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for children 4 to 12. (609) ; OTHER ACTIVITIES Shopping The Cape May Point Lighthouse goes back to 1859, with 199 steps to climb. At the top is a panoramic view in the Watch Room Gallery. (609) The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in North Wildwood was built in 1874 and showcases memorabilia, antiques and a functioning light.
