It goes from the humidity of the Amazon Region, the dry heat of the Northeastern region and the permanently pleasant warm weather of most of the coastal area, to cool evening temperatures in many parts of the plateau and a temperate climate in the South. The seasons in Brazil, are the opposite way round to the Northern Hemisphere seasons of Europe and the United States. The medium annual temperature is 28 C in the North and 20 C in the South. During the months of May and June, in Rio de Janeiro, the average temperature is 25 C. VISAS & PASSPORTS: An entry visa is not required for holders of passports from European or South American countries. As a matter of reciprocity, a visa is required for those from North America. For further information about the necessary documentation and where visas can be obtained, please consult your local Brazilian embassy. Tourist visas can be renewed for a period of 180 days per year. Passports must be valid for at least six months after the planned date of arrival in Brazil. DAY ONE Inbound Rio De Janeiro You will be met on arrival in Rio de Janeiro and transfer with English speaking guide to your hotel. We will visit the Christ Statue elected as one of the seven modern wonders of the world. The statue sits 2,300 ft. above sea level atop Corcovado Hill. Following a scenic drive along the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon we will arrive at the foot of the hill, where we embark on a small train which climbs the beautiful mountainside. Upon reaching the top, visitors will experience a panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro and discover why it is known as the Marvelous City! Lunch on your own Late afternoon visit to Sugar Loaf to admire the sunset with stop for dinner. ABOUT FOZ DO IGUACU Iguaçu Falls, located on the border of the State of Parana, is one of the most famous attractions in all of Brazil. Within the surrounding city of Foz do Iguaçu, the main tourist attractions go hand-in-hand with the exuberant scenery provided by nature. You will learn about the construction and production process of more than 6000 costumes and 7 floats. This experience includes: a visit to Pimpolhos da Grande Rio s warehouse Samba School for Kids, Grande Rio Samba School (one of Rio s first group schools), exhibitions about the history of Samba and the Carnival Parade. This tour also provides a chance to dress up in carnival costumes experience the music and talk to people of the community who work and participates in carnival. Your can experience some fun time either at a samba lesson or a drums and percussion workshop to truly experience this exciting rhythm. If you choose to give back to this community, you will meet with the children of the Pimpolhos NGO and help them with their English studies. These kids receive lessons for free in a private language school and need help practicing their speaking skills and with homework. Only Rio can provide beaches almost completely unknown even by its natives which are only accessible by trail or by boat. In the region of Grumari and Prainha there are wild beaches surrounded by rolling hills covered in a lush tropical forest. Following the ocean drive through Barra da Tijuca tourists notice the contrast between the developed areas and the preserved nature, where the bright blue sea meets the white sand. Perigoso beach is located in the outskirts of Rio and possesses clear waters and perfect waves, which make this beach also frequented by surfers and boogie-boarders. To reach Perigoso you will hike for 40 min through the virgin Atlantic rain forest. Your reward is one of Rio s most isolated and unspoiled beaches, designated as an Environmental Protection Area. You will have time to relax and enjoy the beach and a delicious picnic. 3 ABOUT SALVADOR The first capital of Brazil Salvador was a major place for the slave trade and is now a thriving center of Afro-Brazilian life. Salvador is considered the country s soul and the birthplace of Brazilian culture. The local cuisine, music, dance and vibrant visual arts are all testaments to the pervasive African influence. As one of Brazil s great historical destinations, the city is filled with churches, homes and forts that reflect stunning Portuguese architecture from the Baroque period. Outside the city lie some of Northeastern Brazil s most pristine beaches, including the renowned Praia do Forte and Costa do Sauípe. Considered Brazil s most artistic city, Salvador has a lively art scene and its streets are filled with dance and music all year round. DAY FOUR Rio De Janeiro - Foz Do Iguacu Today, guided transfer to Rio s International Airport for a flight to Iguassu Falls. Afternoon Macuco boat ride with Brazilian side of Falls and arrival transfer We will board a glass elevator, which takes us to a platform were more exquisite views will be revealed. Along with its sister park in Argentina, The Iguassu National Park forms the most significant remaining rainforest in the southern cone of South America, which along with the waterfalls have been declared a National Heritage Site by UNESCO. For passengers staying at Hotel Das Cataratas, the tour departs from the hotel. We will end the tour with a visit to the artisans fair. The big adventure begins at the Macuco Safari entrance gates, located at kilometer 25 on the Cataratas Highway, inside the Iguassu National Park. We will embark in open jeep-towed wagons permitting a free view of the scenery along the trail. During the three kilometers stretch through the jungle, multi-lingual guides point out and explain the flora and fauna of the Park. The second stage of the tour is an optional hike of 600 meters, which leads us to the wate fall baptized Macuco Falls. The Macuco Falls, perfect for a refreshing dip on days of intense heat, spill down from a height of approximately 20 meters. Access is via a stairway carved into an ancient rock. The last stop is the Macuco Safari dock on the Brazilian side of the Iguassu River. In the water, the inflatable bi-motor boats are secure and efficient vessels, specially constructed to withstand the rigors of the excursion. The boat travels upriver, passing the canyon, facing the rapids, at a speed permitting the appreciation of the scenery. The time in Brasilia is the official time in Brazil, usually 3 hours behind GMT (London). This changes with the start of Summer Time (the clocks go forward an hour). Arte Consciente is a grassroots social project in Saramandaia which is a desperately poor community in the city of Salvador. Art Consciente Recreational and Cultural Group has returned hope and self esteem to many youth in the neighborhood gaining immense respect from the local community in the process. Today the group attends 250 local children and youth in a series of workshops focusing on the talents of each of the founders. We meet with the founders or managers, learn of the history and of challenges past, present, and future. They will introduce us to the community and to this element of what has become a uniquely self-sustainable and self-propagating grassroots social movement in Salvador. We will tour the community see examples of urban graffiti produced by the project, and be treated to exhibitions of one of the local activities like boxing, soccer, percussion, and circus arts. This will offer participants with a very rare opportunity to see first-hand the social need for and the positive benefits of grassroots social projects in a community rarely visited by the outside world. The students of Arte Consciente will likewise broaden their cultural experience with this opportunity to introduce their community, answer questions, and tell the story of their desires for and successes with this project. Bahia by night show at Miguel Santana Theatre The Bahia Folklore Company (Balé Folclórico da Bahia) is one of the most respected folklore dance troupes in the world. The company performs in the intimate Miguel Santana Theatre in the Pelourinho in a stunning presentation of the multiple African traditions that heavily influence the Bahian culture. We will see the sacred dances of the Candomblé; puxada de rede, a song by fishermen in honor of Yemanjá the goddess of the sea; maculelê, an acrobatic stick and sword dance with its origins in the cane fields; capoeira, a martial art/dance of Angolan origin and the samba de roda, a spinning, swirling version of this exuberant national dance. 5 LANGUAGE The national language of Brazil is Portuguese. DAY SEVEN Salvador ELECTRICITY: The electric current in most of Brazil is 110 V. Many hotels have adaptors if necessary, although it is recommended to bring your own travel adaptors. CUISINE: The Brazilian cuisine is rich and varied with Portuguese and African influences. The most typical Brazilian dish is the feijoada : served in big casseroles, it is a stew of black beans with beef and pork. Usually it is served with manioc flour, rice and slices of fresh orange. There is also the famous Brazilian barbecue, usually served in restaurant in a rodizio system, where several kinds of grilled meats are brought to the tables on a skewer and cut directly on the plates of the costumers. The food from Bahia has stronger flavors. There is the famous Vatapa : made with shrimps, fish oil, coconut milk, bread and oil. The national drink is the famous Caipirinha : made with sugar cane alcohol called cachaca, mixed with lime, sugar and ice. Capoeira (Angola) Workshop Upon arrival in Brazil, the Africans felt the need to develop ways to protect themselves against the violence and repression of Brazilian settlers. They were constant targets of bloody practices and punishments by the plantation owners. When fleeing from the farms, they were persecuted by the authorities, who had extremely barbarous capture techniques. The farmers forbade slaves to practice any kind of fight. Therefore, slaves used the rhythm and movements of African dances to create a martial art disguised as a dance, which was an important instrument of cultural and physical resistance. Music also plays a very important role in Capoeira, and it should not be performed without the full accompaniment of four berimbaus, (a bowed one-stringed instrument and the Capoeira backbone), one conga, tambourines and an assortment of other percussion instruments. Like all great martial arts, there is a very vital philosophy and a way of life associated with being a capoeirista (a capoeira fighter). To become a master demands years of dedication to the finer details of this art.
