2 Dear Yale Traveler, The world-famous Pushkar Camel Fair is a spectacular occasion for our journey to India. Traversing legendary Rajasthan in the comfort of the Palace on Wheels train is the best way to explore some of northern India's remote but fascinating places that are inaccessible by air. Immersing ourselves in the rich variety of cultural, natural, and historical jewels for which India is famous, we ll visit Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Agra, and the Taj Mahal. At Keoladeo Ghana National Park we ll discover thousands of native birds and at Rathambore National Park, we ll search for the elusive Bengal Tiger. Five nights aboard the Palace on Wheels, affords us accommodations appointed in a style worthy of India's royal maharajas, with spacious cabins, two restaurants, and a spa. Our program features five UNESCO World Heritage sites: Humayun's Tomb and Qutab Minar in Delhi, Keoladeo Ghana National Park, and Agra Fort and the incomparably beautiful Taj Mahal in Agra. We ll explore the princely city of Jaipur; enchanting Udaipur, known as the "Venice of the East"; and the "blue city" of Jodhpur, famed for its indigo-washed buildings. Depart U.S. / Delhi, India Friday & Saturday, November 1 & 2 Depart home on an overnight flight to Delhi. Arrive on November 2 and transfer to the hotel. Enjoy a welcome reception and dinner this evening. Taj Mahal Hotel (R,D Nov. 2) Delhi Sunday, November 3 Old Delhi, the capital of Muslim India for seven centuries, consists of eight different cities built by a succession of empires. New Delhi was created as the capital of India by the British in 1911, and is the epicenter of contemporary Indian political activity. In Old Delhi, see the Red Fort, the residence of Mughal emperors; and visit Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India, with its tapering minarets and marble domes. In New Delhi, see Humayun s Tomb, the architectural forerunner of the Taj Mahal and a World Heritage site. Taj Mahal Hotel (B,L,D) Delhi / Ajmer / Pushkar Monday, November 4 Early morning train ride to Ajmer. This afternoon, drive to the small town of Pushkar, surrounding a holy Hindu lake that has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries. It is the site of the only Bhrama temple in India, extremely important to Hindu devotees. Camel traders have long congregated in the desert outside of town for business around the full moon known as Karthik Purnima, and these meetings have evolved into a fair with camel races, demonstrations, a bazaar, music, and dance, attracting visitors from all of India and the rest of the world. The Gateway Hotel Pushkar (B,L,D) Jaisalmer India Pushkar / Jaipur Tuesday, November 5 Return to Pushkar this morning to witness more revelry, then drive to Jaipur to explore majestic Amber Fort, a 17th-century fortress-palace perched high on a mountain, and one of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan World Heritage sites. The honeycolored palace, reflected in Maota Lake, is a distinguished specimen of Rajput architecture. Trident Hotel Pushkar (B,L,D) Witness the Pushkar Camel Fair, a marvelous tradition which brings together traders, farmers, villagers, and travelers around the full moon known as Karthik Purnima. Jaipur Wednesday, November 6 Continue your exploration of Jaipur at the City Palace complex, which houses a museum featuring rare manuscripts, paintings, and an armory; and Jantar Mantar, an 18th-century royal observatory with large-scale astronomic instruments built by Maharajah Jai Singh. In the afternoon explore the city s bazaar and visit a textile and block-printing shop. During an afternoon game drive, keep an eye out for the elusive Bengal tiger as well as hyenas, jackals, spotted deer, sambar, foxes, and more than 300 species of birds. Sawai Madhopur Lodge (B,L,D) Sawai Madhopur / Chittaurgarh Friday, November 8 Embark the Palace on Wheels in Sawai Madhopur and depart for Chittaurgarh. Upon arrival, enjoy tea at the impressive Chittaurgarh Fort, once the center of Rajput resistance against Mughal rule and another of India s World Heritage forts. Explore the City Palace complex, built over a period of nearly 400 years in a flamboyant fusion of Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles. Perched atop a hill overlooking Lake Pichola, the complex is a labyrinth of courtyards richly decorated with inlaid mirror-work and frescoes. Also visit Saheliyonki-Bari (Courtyard of the Maidens),

Palace on Wheels (B,L,D) Jaisalmer Sunday, November 10 Today arrive in magical Jaisalmer, whose imposing turrets and bastions of golden sandstone surround and shelter a lively town. Discover the elaborately decorated facades of the havelis, once the mansions of wealthy merchants, and visit Jaisalmer Fort, also on the Hill Forts of Rajasthan World Heritage list. In the afternoon, venture into the Thar Desert on camels for tea among the sand dunes. Palace on Wheels (B,L,D) Jodhpur Monday, November 11 The blue city of Jodhpur is famed for its indigo-washed buildings (traditionally homes of the Brahmins) cascading over the hills, its sunny climate, and its beautiful architecture. Explore massive Mehrangarh Fort, built on a hilltop in 1459 and comprised of a variety of royal palaces with collections of priceless jewels and armor. Also visit Jaswant Thada, the mausoleum of the royal family of Marwar, which is constructed of thin, intricately carved sheets of marble that glow in the sunlight. Reboard the train and depart for Bharatpur. Palace on Wheels (B,L,D) Bharatpur / Agra Tuesday, November 12 Arrive in Bharatpur for a morning exploration of Keoladeo Ghana National Park, a World Heritage designated bird sanctuary renowned for massive flocks of egrets, Siberian cranes, migratory water fowl, and many other species of birds. Originally a private hunting reserve of the Maharajas of Bharatpur, the marshes were protected and developed in the late 19th Century to attract waterfowl, and now more than 360 species of birds make this park their home. Continue to Agra and visit Agra Fort, a World Heritage site that dates back to at least A.D This spectacular walled city contains a maze of courtyards, mosques, and private chambers built by Emperor Akbar.
