3 History of the Willoughvale Inn The WilloughVale Farm Over a century ago, much of Vermont was farmland. At that time, the WilloughVale Inn was known as the WilloughVale Farm. Owned by Dr. Wells of Orleans, who made a specialty of furnishing farm products to cottage residents, the farm was run by George Conley and his wife. In 1909, before he would achieve poetic immortality, the road less traveled brought the American Poet Robert Frost and his family to a tent-site on the WilloughVale Farm. Like so many others over the years, locals and visitors alike, Frost was inspired by Lake Willoughby. His idyll, A Servant to Servants, from his published book, North of Boston, describes both Willoughby Lake and life on the WilloughVale Farm in his unforgettable union of pastoral and philosophical poetry. The main character in the poem is a composite of three women, one of which was the hard working Mrs. Conley. With a touch of understanding about the inherent uncertainty of the hospitality industry, and at the same time evidence of this long tradition here at the WilloughVale, Frost writes... WilloughVale Cabins and Restaurant In 1933, Charles A. ( Doc ) Harter and Lee E. Emerson acquired the property, which had by then become the WilloughVale Inn Cabins and Restaurant. The Harter family at the time owned much of the property at the north end of the lake, including what is today The North Beach and once what was known as the Songadeewin, a highly renowned girl s camp. The family owned and operated the Inn and Restaurant for the next few decades, expanding and upgrading the property. In the late 1970 s, the Safka family from New Jersey bought and operated the property for nearly a decade, until a couple from Connecticut, the Symcaks, purchased the property. The Symcaks demolished the remaining structure and built a replica of the former Inn mirroring the footprints left by previous owners. In addition to the ornate construction of the replica Inn, the Symcaks added a large basement, a gazebo, and rebuilt the four lakefront cottages. The Willough- Vale Inn boasted a 120-seat restaurant, eight country Inn rooms, and four lakeside cottages...your going and coming. And you like it here? I can see how you might. But I don t know! It would be different if more people came, for then there would be business. As it is, the cottages Len built, sometimes we rent them sometimes we don t. We ve a good piece of shore that ought to be worth something, and may yet. But I don t count on it as much as Len... 1

4 History of the Willoughvale Inn (continued) A New Era As a visitor to Lake Willoughby (with an appreciation for the area s pastoral qualities and exceptional outdoor recreational opportunities), David Gameroff fell in love with the property. The Gameroff Trust acquired the property in 1996, the very same owners who operate the largely successful Green Mountain Inn in Stowe, Vermont. The Trust renovated and upgraded the building, readying the WilloughVale for its reopening and return to its long tradition in hospitality. In the summer of 2001, the large dining room was downsized to accommodate the construction of two luxury suites, the Governor Aiken and Gazebo, offering the ultimate in elegance and luxury. In addition, all rooms, suites and cottages have satellite televisions, DVD players and telephones. An Inn dock was put in for summertime use, and amenities including kayaks, bicycles, canoes, and snowshoes are added every year. In the summer of 2007 the Willoughvale Inn added four new lakeview cottages, located on the hill behind the Main Inn. You will love the breathtaking waterscape and vistas of Mt. Pisgah and the Willoughby Gap. The names Songadeewin, Twilight, Conley and Peregrine, carefully chosen by David Gameroff, do homage to the rich local history of the Lake Willoughby area and capture the spirit of the lake s traditions and bygone days. In 2010 we enhanced the Waterfront Activity Area adding a 15 Wave Water Trampoline and a Floating Dock. A Game Room was built in the Main Inn offering Air Hockey, Pool Table, Wii Nintendo and Ping Pong. In 2011, the popular Robert Frost lakefront cottage underwent a major renovation with a new kitchen and dining area layout - complete with granite countertops, washer, dryer and dishwasher. Central air-conditioning and two flat screen televisions completed the renovation. The Robert Frost, Angler, Birches and Pisgah cottages, along with the Main Inn, were freshened up with new paint colors. 2 The Birches and Pisgah lakefront cottages underwent a major renovation with a new kitchen, living room and dining area layout created to provide the utmost in modern conveniences and relaxation while enjoying a beautiful lake view. New living room, kitchen and dining furnishings have been added, along with two flat screen televisions, central air-conditioning and an oversized Jacuzzi in the remodeled bathroom. With a respectful nod to one of Lake Willoughby s most renowned tavern owner from days gone by, the WilloughVale renamed its restaurant Gil s Bar and Grill in the spring of 2011 to honor Peter Gilman who established Lake Willoughby s first tavern aptly named Gilman s Tavern - in the mid 1800 s. Gilman was something of an institution in the Westmore area. Known for his willingness to always do a good turn for his town, Gilman taught school and held various town offices over the years. He was instrumental in getting what is now VT Rt. 5A built around the lake, ultimately going broke using his own money to get the job completed. Gilman s Tavern, open year round, provided hearty fare for teamsters, loggers, fishing parties and summer vacationers alike for well over 50 years. After his death in 1872, Gilman s wife, son Edward and grandson Harry continued to operate the tavern. Mrs. Gilman s fine 40 cent dinners were the stuff of local lore and the family was known for dispensing bountiful hospitality and being congenial hosts. With a reputation as one of the finest cooks in the state, Mrs. Gilman reportedly served a staggering 1518 meals during the month of June in 1893 alone. The tavern was sold in 1917 to Charles Foster who remodeled the tavern and renamed it the New Willoughby House. 7 Guest Services at the Inn Activities and Events See the Reception Desk for a copy of current Activities and Events. After Hours at the Inn If you are staying in the Main Inn, you have a key to access the front door of the Inn. If you have an emergency when the Reception Desk is closed, please call to reach our overnight attendant. If you get locked out of the Inn, go to the front door and there is a phone where you can call for assistance. Boats Canoes and kayaks are available seasonally and are located across from the Inn beside the lake. Paddles and flotation devices are located in the waterfront shed. There is a sign-out sheet at the shed. Check-out Time Check-out time is 11:00 am. Guests who check-out later than 11:00 am are subject to a charge equal to a full day room rate. Late check-outs may be granted by the Reception Desk on a discretionary basis. Continental Breakfast Buffet A continental breakfast buffet is served in Gil s Bar and Grill from 8:00 am until 10:00 am. The buffet is included in the room rate for Main Inn guests. For guests staying in cottages the buffet is available at an additional cost. Credit Cards For your convenience, we honor Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. Cribs The Inn currently has Pack & Plays and air mattresses that are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please dial 0 and the Reception Desk will assist you. DVDs DVDs are available for rent at the Reception Desk for $4.00 each (plus tax). Reception Desk The Reception Desk is staffed daily with seasonal hours. Check with staff for hours of coverage during your stay. 5

8 Guest Services at the Inn (continued) Fireplaces Angler, Frost and Pisgah Cottages - a Vermont casting fireplace is your heat source and is controlled only by the thermostat on the wall. Adjust the temperature accordingly. Gazebo Room - the switch for the gas fireplace is to the left of the bed. Governor Aiken Room - a log is provided for the wood-burning fireplace. The Reception Desk can provide additional logs. To open the flue, turn counter-clockwise; to close, turn clockwise. Lakeview Cottages - all Lakeview Cottages have a Vermont casting fireplace. Games Monopoly, backgammon, checkers, apples to apples, puzzles and other games can be found in the library. Playing cards are available for sale. Badminton is set-up on the lawn by the main dock. Gratuities A 6% service charge is added to your bill for your convenience. This is shared by those staff that provide services during your stay. Dinner tipping is left to your discretion. Customary tipping for good restaurant service is 15% - 20%. Gratuities may be charged to your room by indicating the amount on your restaurant check and signing the check to your room. Housekeeping Daily housekeeping service is provided in the Main Inn and Cottages. If you need an extra pillow, towels or a blanket, please contact the Reception Desk by dialing 0. Please place Service Please card on door for housekeeping service. Ice Should you need ice, contact the Reception Desk and our staff will assist you. Ice buckets are provided in your room or cottage. Justices of the Peace A list of local Justices of the Peace is available at the Reception Desk should you wish to contact them for a ceremony. Lost and Found Please contact the Reception Desk by dialing 0. Mail Outgoing mail may be left at the Reception Desk and is mailed by 11 am daily. Postcards and stamps are available for sale at the Reception Desk. A Post Office is located on Route 5 in the town of Barton. Newspapers The Orleans County Record is available daily, The Chronicle, a weekly local newspaper, and North Star, a monthly newspaper are also available in the library for guests to peruse. 6

9 Guest Services at the Inn (continued) Mountain Bikes Two mountain bikes and helmets are available seasonally to our guests free of charge. Please inquire at the Reception Desk. Snowshoes Two pairs of Tubb snowshoes are available seasonally to our guests free of charge. Please inquire at the Reception Desk. Pets The WilloughVale Inn welcomes dogs. We have designated rooms and cottages for you and your pet. There are rules regarding your pet s stay. We accept one dog per Room or Lake Front Cottage, subject to approval at time of reservation. A $ per night service fee applies. Dogs are not allowed in the Governor Aiken, Gazebo and Lakeview Cottages. Pets are not allowed in the restaurant (State Law). According to ADA service animals for people with disabilities are permitted in restaurants. Emotional support animales are not service animals. Please do not leave your dog unattended in your guest room or cottage for an extended period of time as they tend to get lonesome and bored, and tend to get into mischief. If we determine there is damage in your room caused by your pet, or if bedding or drapes need to be dry-cleaned due to pet odor or soilage, you will be notified and your credit card will be charged accordingly. The Inn is not responsible for any pet that escapes upon the entry of housekeeping or other Inn staff who may need access to your room. Please pick up pet waste on the grounds. Doggy waste bags available at Reception Desk. Suggested walks for your pet include the hiking trails of Willoughby State Forest and the VAST corridor extending from the parking lot up the hill into the woods. Be extra careful in the winter if you intend to use the VAST corridor, as snowmobilers move very fast and may endanger both yourself and your pet. If you have the time, you and your dog can take a trip to Stephen Huneck s Dog Chapel in St. Johnsbury for a unique experience. Retail We have a variety of WilloughVale Inn and Lake Willoughby memorabilia that make great gifts for yourself and for loved ones. For a complete list refer to the retail section of this guide. Items are available at the Reception Desk. Storage Contact the Reception Desk if you need storage for any large items, bicycles etc. The WilloughVale Inn is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Hor on the south-end of the lake offer spectacular views of the colorful foliage, while Mt. Wheeler to the west is a challenging, but rewarding ascent. A local favorite is Bald Hill to the east. The abandoned fire tower on the wooded top provides 360-degree views of Mt. Washington, Camels Hump, Jay Peak and on a clear day Lake Champlain. Scuba Diving and Swimming Take a dip in beautiful Lake Willoughby right from our shores across the street or head over to the North Beach (1/4 mile away) or the beach at the South end of the Lake (5 miles away).
