3 Welcome letter by the President of the Organising Committee of 22nd S.C.H.M.S. Honorable Professors, Dear fellow students, We are delighted and honoured to welcome you at the 22nd Scientific Congress of Hellenic Medical Students (S.C.H.M.S.) & 10th International Forum of Hellenic Medical Students and Junior Doctors, which will take place on May 13th-15th, 2016 at the Conference and Cultural Centre of the University of Patras. After 21 consecutive years of outstanding presence in science, the S.C.H.M.S. has unquestionably grown into a big celebration, for which, all medical students are proud of. Adapted to the new reality of knowledge eruption and the increasing needs for education and information about current scientific developments, the S.C.H.M.S. can now be described as a national institution that attracts the admiration and applause of the scientific community. The Chapter of Patras of the Scientific Society of Hellenic Medical Students (S.C.H.M.S.), for the second time in the history of the institution, after 2013 and the organisation of the 19th S.C.H.M.S. and the 7th International Forum, undertakes to keep the bar high by conducting another innovative and well organised according to international standards, Congress. Our primary goal is to mark out a generation, who is building the future by laying hope, dreams, ambition, knowledge and love for humanity as foundation. We hope to exceed all your expectations and we look forward to seeing you at the Conference and Cultural Center of the University of Patras, on the 13-15th of May, 2016 in our beautiful Patras! 4 Welcome letter by the President of the Organising Committee of the 10th International FORUM Dear friends and colleagues, We are pleased to present you the 10th International Forum of Hellenic Medical Students and Junior Doctors which takes place in the context of the 22 nd Scientific Congress of Hellenic Medical Students, on May 13 th -15 th, 2016 at the Conference and Cultural Centre of the University of Patras. About a year before, after great work, fondness and collective effort, we undertook the organisation of the 22nd S.C.H.M.S. and 10th International Forum. The responsibility was enormous as the flag of S.C.H.M.S. has been waving for 21 consecutive years with success and results worthy of other conferences international standards. Collaboration between S.S.H.M.S. - Chapter of Patras and Congress World is crucial for the viability of our congress, since with their experience, full support and assistance, they bear great responsibility for the final result. I deeply thank Ellie Andrikogiannopoulou for all these hours she devoted to this effort, and I hope and wish World Congress to remain by the Chapter of Patras side for the next years as well. Through my involvement with S.S.H.M.S. for the past six years, I gained experience for which I feel lucky, I made friends whom I hope to have always beside me, I met scientists who became and remain to this day an exemplar for me. Instead of conclusion, I would like to thank some people who helped not only the Chapter of Patras but also me over these years. First of all, I would like to thank our professors, the Deanery of the University of Patras and Mr. Apostolos Papalois, Director of the Experimental - Research Center ELPEN, for their assistance to all of our events and great trust they have shown us for all this time. I wish to express special thanks from my heart to Theodoros Marantos and Michael Sideris, who greatly contributed to the Chapter of Patras evolution up until now and for being my motivation to become a member of the large family of S.S.H.M.S. Finally, I would like to congratulate the whole Chapter of Patras, Fay Kosmopoulou and all members, for their vast effort along a year now for the implementation of the conference during these difficult conditions. I thank them for offering me the opportunity to be the President of the Forum and I reassure them that I was, am and will continue to be always by their side for the good of my beloved Chapter of Patras which accompanied my student years and offered me the most beautiful memories. 5 Welcome letter by the Honorary President of the Chapter of Patras Dear friends and colleagues, In a very difficult economic period for all of us and with the signs of the economic crisis visible in our society, S.S.H.M.S. still raises the flag of S.C.H.M.S., the oldest and most historic student institution in our country, spurring the interest of distinguished scientists from Greece and abroad, and making this institution a worldwide novelty. Equipped with passion and creativity, the Chapter of Patras was assigned the implementation of the 22 nd S.C.H.M.S. and the 10 th International Forum for the second time in its history. Our aim is another quality conference driven by the European standards, which will be accompanied by the Greek students enthusiasm, and a brand new International FORUM, which will introduce useful and smart innovations. The New Generation of S.S.H.M.S. will effect and leave its personal stamp on this great celebration, marking another bright circle in its rich and perennial history. Having been lucky to be present at the reestablishment of the Chapter of Patras 7 years ago, I have another reason to be glad and deeply moved by this conference. A beautiful and adventurous journey, which began by a group of students in Patras a few years ago, with tentative steps back then, continues, justifying the efforts of our hard work through all these years. I would like to thank Fay, Alexandros and the rest of the students of the Chapter of Patras, who despite the difficulties encountered, make us proud with their work, character and personality, as well as the University of Patras and our teachers for their factual support concerning the activities of our association. Through my journey in S.S.H.M.S. I gained valuable experiences and memories that marked my student years and will remain forever in my memory, as well as precious friends, who I hope to be always beside me. It was a great pleasure and a great honor to represent responsibly and enthusiastically this big family of S.S.H.M.S. for 6 years both through the Panhellenic Board of the association, but also through the chapter of Patras council; and despite the sacrifices and personal energy I spent, if I could turn back time I would do it again with the same and more fondness. I remain faithful follower and admirer of S.S.H.M.S. s Panhellenic Idea which I have been supporting all these years. Good luck to your beautiful work, I will always be there for our big family. 6 Welcome letter by the Organising Committee of the Course for Medical Research Dear friends and colleagues, We have the pleasure to welcome you to a newfound course of international scope and recognition for medical research, entitled Course for Medical Research - Applied Translational Research and Clinical Research, which will take place on May 14th, 2016, in Rio, Patras. The course is principally designed for the needs of medical students and junior doctors, without unnecessary information and theoretical analysis, with a total duration of over 10 hours, as its goal is to help young scientists to acquire adequate knowledge in designing, attending, writing and presenting a clinical and experimental study. Assistants in our effort will be speakers with great experience, acknowledgment and international recognition. The course has the full support of the Experimental-Research Center ELPEN and is organised within the framework of the 10th International Forum of Hellenic Medical Students and Junior Doctors, which is the official Forum of the 22nd Scientific Congress of Hellenic Medical Students. Our aim is to cover important subjects such as: 1) Introduction and basic speculation: From a general idea to implement a research idea, 2) Introduction to biostatistics (definitions and g-power analysis), 3) Experimental research: Defining its goals and how it is constructed, 4) Clinical research: Defining its goals and what types of clinical studies exist, 5) Authorship and presentation of an experimental or clinical study, and many more other issues. We hope that you will embrace with interest our effort for continuing education of medical students and junior doctors and we are waiting for you in Rio on May 14th 2016, for the Course for Medical Research. It primarily helps you realise that every science and especially Medicine, requires constant updating of knowledge and enables your teachers dynamic presence. Now, that so many years passed, we can speak about institution. I have a clear picture of the effort and effect. I am absolutely sure that this year will be a success as always. I congratulate you for your initiative, I wish you best of luck and do not forget that medicine requires passion, patience, dedication, perseverance, sacrifice, love for people, teamwork and courage. 8 Welcome Letter by the President of the Panhellenic Board of the S.S.H.M.S. In less than a month hundreds of medical students will be on their way to Patras. An also great number of medical students from Patras and all over Greece have dedicated themselves, spending lots of hours in organizing, creating ideas and discussing, for one particular purpose: The 22nd Scientific Congress of Hellenic Medical Students. For all of us the long-standing, loyal attendants it will be more than five words. It will be more than 5,000 memories and experiences! 22 years ago the Scientific Society of Hellenic Medical Students (S.S.H.M.S.) came up with the idea of creating a remarkable event, a feast for all medical students, which would include a breakthrough feature: Our Congress purely originates from medical students and it is also destined for them. Today, after 22 years of its active presence, it preserves these values and remains a traditional meeting point for hundreds of medical students (sometimes even more than a thousand!), who prepare themselves for months in order to participate in. There, we find the opportunity to take our first step in creating and presenting a scientific project, we meet and collaborate with our professors, we explore our scientific possibilities in a safe, friendly and creative framework, we participate in the workshops of the FORUM, meet each other again after months, we build strong relationships and friendships and finally end up with the unforgettable memories of those 3 full days. The Chapter of Patras has already demonstrated its ability. Within the last years it has been reconstructed and it has thrived. One Congress in 2013, 2 repetitions of the new panhellenic event of Patras named Clinical Course of Internal Medicine and a series of other events are included in the recent history of the Chapter. This year, our fellows from Patras take the risk and make one bold step forward: In these harsh times, they organize our Congress again, and credits go to every member of the Organizing Committee, as well as to the former members of the Chapter who offer their invaluable guidance. Every active and extended structure of people -especially when it comes to a team of young students- has its misfortunes and bad times, and S.S.H.M.S. has sporadically experienced such situations over the time. However, the 22 years of our history indicate something important: We know how to overcome obstacles and pay attention to really valuable things: To the vivid, creative journey we are offered, and this is our... homeostasis! We enjoy, not only the destination, but the journey itself and every event, every new friend, every memory it offers that keeps some of us on this ship for over 5 years... 36 Chapter of Patras A brief story The Department of Patras of the Scientific Society of Hellenic Medical Students (S.S.H.M.S.), ( owns a very particular and at the same time fascinating part in the history of the S.S.H.M.S.. Since its re-establishment on May 17th, 2010, it maintains an indispensable part of the Medical School of Patras with its enormous range of activities and the partnerships that has formed with numerous medical scientific events. In these last five years, the department enumerates 350 active members. The wide acceptance and recognition gained the cooperation and support from the Deanery of the University of Patras and the School of Medicine of the University of Patras. In the quiver of our activities are included numerous scientific, social, and humanitarian events and activities.
