72 PREPARING MY TRIP You have chosen your region, your boat and your extras, and your reservation is now made. Less than one month before departure, your voucher and your logbook in hand, it s time to plan your journey! The following pages will provide you with valuable information to help you in this preparation, so please read them carefully before you go, and contact your travel agent for further information. What should I pack? Let s start with the case itself: ideally plan to use flexible bags such as sports bags: aboard a boat, space is limited and rigid suitcases may take up too much space during your stay. We recommend that you take light clothing (shorts, swimsuits) and some rain gear and warmer clothes depending on the season. Tennis shoes are required, dress shoes are not advisable as they are inappropriate for boats and so can be dangerous. FPP Travel boats are fully equipped, you ll find that you need to pack little in your bag! (see page 74) Essentials: your camera, a torch, binoculars, a deck of cards and something to read Reception at the departure base, times for boarding and returns Whether you arrive by car, train or plane, the bases are ready to welcome you. To help you reach your starting point, an access plan will be sent to your agency with your voucher. On arrival, the base manager and his team will offer you their warmest welcome. No need to arrive early as most boats leaving in the afternoon are returned to the base the same day. We must therefore allow the necessary time for our team to prepare your boat before departure. Why not plan to arrive an hour before the scheduled time? This will leave time to stock your boat from the local shops. The paperwork (licence, inventory, installation) and explanations about how the boat works, take time: approximately 2 hours. Departure and return times Week days Departure from Monday to Saturday depending on the base, and return from the following Monday to Saturday. Poland: Departure possible on Saturdays Arrival 3pm Boarding and explanation between 4pm and 7pm Poland Sundays at 12noon Return 9am Poland Saturday at 12noon Week-end Saturday morning (or Friday evening depending on availability, to be confirmed one week before departure) Arrival and boarding between 10am and 11am (Fridays between 4pm and 7pm) Italy Friday at 3pm (week-ends to be confirmed 30 days before departure) Retun Monday morning at 9am Mini week Departure on Monday Arrival at 3pm Boarding and explanation between 4pm and 6pm. Italy: mini weeks confirmed 30 days before departure Return on Friday at 2pm, Redon Belgium and Italy return at 9pm Ready to set sail! You do not have a sailing licence and are worried about driving the boat? Rest assured! The handling is quite simple and our teams on the bases will take the time to show you how the different equipment works and introduce you to the maneuvers and docking. The boat works with two commands: a throttle lever with two positions (front and rear) and a wheel to steer: you see, it s simple! Travelling at an average speed of 6kmph. enjoy your holidays with a peaceful soothing rhythm, gently travelling on the water. Enjoy the scenery from a new perspective and feel free to punctuate your cruise with a few stops, gourmet, historical or sports. There will be something for everyone! Don t forget your cameras: You won t want to miss herons, black kites, egrets, mallards, kingfishers! Important: during your cruise, you sometimes come across mariners for whom sailing is their livelihood. They always have priority, it s the rule! Tip: do not anger fishermen. When you come across them on the banks, remember to slow down in order not to create too much backwash, and move over a little so as not to break their lines. You will soon make friends! Manual locks! On some waterways (including the Charente, Lot and the Seille), locks are manual. It is you who maneuver through them, so allowing you greater freedom of navigation, without time constraints, from sunrise to sunset. These cruises are more physical, however, and are not recommended for a first timer, for persons who have difficulty moving, or who have young children with them. When you reach your first lock, don t panic! The lock is simple, and not dangerous, as long as the basic safety rules are followed. You will usually be assisted by the lock keeper, who will appreciate a helping hand if you can, for the operation of the doors and sluices, when they are not automatic. In France the locks are free. They are normally open daily from 9am to 7pm. Important: times may vary according to season. Some bank holidays are not worked by the lock keepers (Easter Sunday, 1 May, 14 July, 1 November) Check with your travel agent. 72

73 Frequently Asked Questions You can find, on the next two pages, the practical questions most frequently asked by our clients, and their answers: How many people can board? Our boats are designed for 2-12 people depending on the model. A minimum of one adult, with a person of at least 16 years, is required for all rentals. Babies and children, even toddlers, count as one person. What are the conditions for one way navigation? As conditions can be uncertain, one-way trips and their direction are confirmed 48 hours before boarding. A supplement will be charged for this option. One way trips are not possible with a fleet of more than 2 boats. Is it necessary to leave a deposit? Two deposits are required for boarding, one for the boat and one for the cleaning. The deposit for the boat is required in all cases, including when you purchase cruise insurance. The amount varies depending on the type of boat. It covers the franchise and is paid back upon return, if the boat and its equipment were not damaged. The cleaning deposit will be returned once the boat has been returned clean. It is not payable if you have taken the cleaning option. Do you offer cancellation insurance? Yes, with cancellation insurance, you can obtain a refund of amounts paid in certain cases of cancellation (see rental conditions) What is Cruise Plus insurance? This insurance covers the interruption of the cruise, damage to the propeller, personal injury, bicycle riding (for bikes hired from one of our bases), and damage caused to a third party. it guarantees the refund of the deposit only in the event of damage to the boat (it does not cover the equipment of the boat: table, parasol, chairs, appliances etc.). Subscription to Cruise Plus insurance does not exempt you from paying the deposit for boarding and is part of a collective contract (Copy of the terms and conditions on request). What supplement must I pay in addition to renting the boat? The only mandatory fee is the hourly navigation rate. Upon departure refuelling has been done. You will be charged on your return for the engine hours you have used. This package differs depending on the type of boat and the number of hours navigated. It covers oil consumption and fuel. You should allow for approximately 5-6 hours cruising per day. The price can vary with the price of fuel. Can we obtain assistance during our stay? Technical assistance is available seven days a week if needed. Despite careful maintenance of boats, the mechanics of them can sometimes be temperamental. In this case, refer to the documents that were given to you when boarding. Are the boats equipped with air conditioning and heating? All boats are equipped with pulsed air heating. This heating is for your comfort to warm up inside the boat. However, it does not maintain a constant temperature. Only Premium vessels in France (and some models in European fleets) are equipped with air conditioning. However, it is limited to the lounge and cools the atmosphere by a few degrees, 2 or 3 maximum, rather than maintaining a constant temperature. Can we get water during the cruise? The water tank of your boat is full before departure. With a capacity of 200 to 1400 litres depending on the model, it provides for about 1-2 days. It is then necessary to fill up with water at points indicated on the waterway map provided on board. Should we stock up on fuel while sailing? Fuel reserves are for an autonomy of 60 hours of sailing, about 2 weeks, for most trips, so you do not have to worry about refuelling. For longer stays, the instructions will be given at the start. The volume of refrigerators is given for guidance only and may vary by region. Is gas supplied? A 13kg gas bottle is provided for heating, cooking and the oven. On some models it also supplies refrigerators. These refrigerators are less efficient in very high outdoor heat and should not be overloaded, the door must be opened as little as possible. The volume of refrigerators is given for guidance only and may vary by region. Some Penichette barges and some Tarpon in Deutschland (see table page 44) are equipped with heating by oil instead of gas. The additional gas bottle is not supplied on board in this case. The fuel for this heating will be invoiced, the price can vary depending on the price of oil, please contact your agency. Is there electricity on board? Running the engine 4-5 hours per day, you will produce electricity for 24 hours of use. However, electricity aboard a boat must be used sparingly and cannot provide the same comfort as in a home. Often 12 volts, or 24 volts stored in batteries, which supply refrigerators, the electricity allows the use of light, ventilation, and sometimes on 220 volts, air conditioning, dishwashers, etc. Devices that use 220 volts must be used during navigation or while docked using shore power, and they cannot be used together (eg air conditioning + dishwasher). In some areas, the shore supply is scarce, or, in the ports, too weak to use the equipment aboard. 220 volt outlets, when they exist, can only be used when connected to the dock. The volume of refrigerators is given for guidance only and may vary by region. What is the size of the beds? There is no standard length and width of berths for boats. The average length is 1.90 m but may in some cases be limited to 1.83 m. Double berths: they are on average 1.40 m wide, but can be reduced to 1.15 m. Single berths: they are on average 0.80 m, but in some cases they can be reduced to 0.65 m. Coffin berths - «coffin» sleeper berths have low ceiling, with less than a meter between the mattress and the ceiling. Convertible seat in lounge or dinette. Contact your agency for the dimensions for your boat model. The measurements given in the boats descriptions are indicative and may vary according to models. 73

74 What is the bow thruster? Some boats on some bases are equipped with a bow thruster. It is a propeller placed in the bow of the boat enabling the boat to be steered sideways. This greatly facilitates maneuvers. However, its use is tricky on canals where there is more risk of sucking in mud and rocks along the banks. In case of breakdown during the cruise, it is often impossible to repair. In this case, the cruise will continue without the bow thruster. If the customer requires repair during the cruise, it will be billed. Because of the vagaries of navigation, it is possible that the boat with a bow thruster that you reserved is not available on the day of departure. In this case, it will be reimbursed on the basis of a flat fee: 10 per day without the propeller during the cruise. What is the temporary licence? For customers who do not have a licence, a temporary licence will be issued for the duration of the cruise, after the short training session. As for the handling of the boat, do not worry, it s quite simple and the teams on the bases will take the time to show you how the different equipment works and introduce you to steering maneuvers and docking. The temporary licence does not give access to certain large gauge waterways: Rhine, Rhone, Seine, Loire etc. It is strictly prohibited to use these waterways. Failure to comply will result in the immediate discharge of the client, with lno refund. In addition, the return of the boat will be borne by the customer. What are the instructions in case of strong winds? Navigation on the Thau lake in Camargue, but also on lakes in Germany, including the Müritzsee and Plauersee, is made more difficult by strong winds, and calls for the vigilance of the driver. With a wind force of over 4 on the Beaufort scale, we ask boaters to take shelter in a port and wait for the wind to drop. In the case of the Thau lake, one-way between the Canal du Rhône to Sète and the Canal du Midi can be upset or cancelled due to weather conditions. If not attributable to the rental company (net caught in the propeller, getting stuck etc.) and requiring the intervention and / or towing of the boat through the SNSM or any other company, costs due for this intervention will be billed directly to the customer. What happens in case of floods or drought? Some rivers and some canals are prone to flooding or water shortages, mainly in spring and autumn. These events may require us to change the departure base and your cruise to another waterway. In all cases, changing the departure base or replacement of the itinerary do not constitute grounds for cancellation or refund of your cruise.
