The area envelopes the banks of the 483km Dordogne River, along part of its course through the Midi-Pyrénées region from its source in the Massif Central. Woven into the landscape are dozens of art-filled grottoes and prehistoric sites, heritage-listed medieval hamlets and bastions, such as the Château de Belcastel, which stands high above the river. Flow of Times In a gorge lined with mountainous cliffs, the Dordogne River flows between the towns of Souillac and Sousceyrac, through the densely forested department of Lot. After winding its way past 62 towns and oak and chestnut-filled woodlands, the river basin is framed by craggy limestone plateaus and spectacular outcrops. Dozens of fortifications are perched high above the waterway, and some, such as the Château de la Treyne at Lacave, have been transformed into luxury hotels.

Primordial Geology Fear of the devil kept people away from this massive subterranean kingdom for centuries. From its gaping 99m wide opening, the Gouffre de Padirac plunges 103m into the depths of the earth. A sequence of three lifts take visitors to the bottom of the abyss, where they pilot canoes on an underground river tour through 2.5km of turquoise pools and ochre galleries. Startling formations line the way, including the 60m-high stalactite Grande Pendeloque, and the Grand Dome Room, with its 94m-high cathedral ceiling.

Croquembouche Village Perched around a 150m-tall rocky spur, the fortified village of Rocamadour has been dubbed the citadel of faith. The discovery of a saint s tomb and a miraculous healing statue in the 12 th century made it an important stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The 223 steps of the Via Sancta lead to the ecclesiastical cluster on Place St-Amadour. This is home to the crypt of Saint Amadour in the Basilica Saint-Sauveur, and the Chapelle de Notre-Dame, with its 9 th -century wooden effigy, dubbed the Black Madonna.

Monastic Beauty Folded in the verdant creases of the Dordogne Valley, the honey colored cottages with chocolate brown roofs of Carennac cling around a bridge on the Dordogne River. The medieval hamlet sprung up near a monastic community dependent on Burgundy s Cluny Abbey. The 11 th -century priory, Église Saint-Pierre, is renowned for its vaulted cloister, and the Gothic carvings carved into its Roman style tympanum, the semicircular area above its arched entrance.

Golden Stone Sarlat-la-Canéda is a hive of flaxen-stoned alleyways and squares. Surveying the Place de la Liberté, the 2002 bronze statue Le Badaud the onlooker is one of many modern cultural charms in the ancient town. Another statue of bronze geese graces the turreted Place du Marché aux Oies. The walled city of wooden slat houses developed around what was once a 9 th -century Benedictine Abbey, which has grown into a cathedral. A glass lift in the bell tower of the Église Sainte-Marie, designed by architect Jean Nouvel, takes visitors to a vantage point with 360-degree views of its slate rooftops.

Les Eyzies-de-Tayac- Sireuil Welcoming you to the so-called world capital of prehistory is a statue of the famous Cro-Magnon the name given to the earliest known European Homo sapiens whose fossilized 30,000-year-old skeleton was found in a rock shelter in Les Eyzies, as it is commonly known, has a cluster of UNESCO-listed prehistoric sites, rock dwellings and decorated caves including the multicolored animal drawings of the Font-de- Gaume cave. There is also an incredible display of stalactites and stalagmites in the Grand- Roc cave. Many artifacts, including tools, art and arrows, are housed in the National Museum of Prehistory, beneath the dramatic overhanging cliffs that shroud the village. Lascaux Discovered in 1940 by four teenage boys, the remarkably decorated Lascaux cave has been called the Sistine Chapel of Prehistory. About 25km northeast of Les Eyzies near Montignac, the 600 animal paintings and 1,500 engravings are nicknamed the Lascaux bestiary.
