PAGE 2 Introduction Lying off the coast of Africa, the colourful island of Fuerteventura is little known to walkers, which is what makes it so special. Covered by a wonderful kaleidoscope of landscapes and footpaths, Fuerteventura is an excellent destination for a Canary Islands walking holiday. The island is home to vibrant hiking trails, year round sunshine, a stunning coastline, national parks, endless sandy beaches, pretty white-washed towns and a stunning volcanic landscape. Declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2009 due to an abundance of endemic flora and fauna, on this centre-based walking holiday you ll stay in beautiful accommodation set around a pool surrounded by charming terraces and a relaxing Canarian garden. Each day we ll discover Fuerteventura on foot by following a rich variety of trails through the Betancuria Mountain Range, the Jandia Nature Reserve and the breath-taking sweeping dunes of Aguas Verdes. We ll take a boat trip to the tiny island of Lobos situated between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, stroll past the salt fields of Salinas del Carmen, hike along endless sandy beaches, discover a Saharan-style desert landscape and walk up to the spectacular volcanic knives of the island. Alongside staying in premium accommodation you'll discover a surprising side to Fuerteventura by walking the very best trails on the island. Looking For A Two Week Canary Islands Holiday? For a complete Canary Islands experience, why not combine our Hidden Trails of Fuerteventura holiday with our one week Lanzarote - The Island of Eternal Spring. Our dates work back to back and with frequent ferry crossings between Playa Blanca on Lanzarote and Corralejo on Fuerteventura it really couldn't be simpler! Is this holiday for you? This relaxing holiday is centre-based with a mixture of easy day walks and sightseeing. During the week we walk on a wide variety of terrain which includes well defined footpaths, tracks of gravel, volcanic scree (lapilli), volcanic ash and small roads. There are minor sections of the trail with stony slopes, but these are mainly when ascending and descending. Each walk will be from 3 4 hours allowing plenty of time for sightseeing and photography along the way. On top of this, each day is optional and you can choose to walk or have a day off hiking. Adding to the relaxation factor is our choice of accommodation. Whilst there is sufficient walking on each day to satisfy weekend hikers, it is intended that this should be a walking holiday led at a relaxing pace. Evenings will be spent enjoying dinner either at the hotel or in the town and of course, sampling local wines. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the group accommodation in La Oliva. After arriving at Feurtuventura Airport you'll take a taxi to the group accommodation which is a short 25min ride away and costs approximately 30 euros. Our relaxing hotel and villa style accommodation for the week with communal pool and relaxed surroundings, is the perfect place to unwind after a day of walking. It's a 15 min walk to the small town of La Oliva and depending on your arrival time you may wish to have a swim in the pool, relax on the terrace or have a stroll. La Oliva is a compact town and was once the political centre of Feurteventura. It houses a pretty little church with a square bell tower that is visible for miles around. The town's main attraction is the Casa de los Coroneles - the house of colonels (entrance 3 euro) which has been restored and houses photographs showing the house in its heyday. The town has an interesting art centre and quaint grain museum (Tuesday to Saturday ) which tells the story of the "cillas" or grains store and their history on the island. If you are arriving in the middle of the afternoon remember that Fuerteventura follows the 'siesta' hours of

PAGE 3 Spain so you may have the town all to yourself! After settling in, we'll meet up for dinner and our leader will brief about the week ahead. MEALS D Day 2: Discover the west coast whilst walking from Aguas Verdes to Los Molinos. This morning after breakfast we'll transfer (30mins) to Aguas Verdes on the dramatic west coast of the island. On arrival and before we start walking we'll keep an eye out for local squirrels that live in the nearby habitat! Today's walk is a great introduction to the contrasts of Fuerteventura and shows how easy it is to get away from the main towns and resorts. Our walk follows a sandy trail which is soft underfoot and runs almost parallel to the Atlantic Ocean. The trail takes us through a desert like landscape whilst all the time we have sweeping views of the ocean. The rich colours of the landscape (sandstone, limestone and black basaltic lava) are an amazing contrast to the Atlantic Ocean and we end our walk in the small settlement of Puertito de Los Molinos. This tiny fishing village feels like the end of the world and is home to a small number of fisherman's cottages, a few simple restaurants and some resident ducks due to the freshwater stream that flows into the Atlantic Ocean. There will be time for refreshments and a dip before we transfer (30mins) back to our accommodation. ASCENT 170M DISTANCE 10KM MEALS BLD DESCENT 160M TIME 4 HOURS WALKING HOURS Day 3: Explore Betancuria, the former capital and hike through the Betancuria Mountain Range. Today we start by transferring (40mins) to the former capital of Betancuria situated in a picturesque valley. Located inland, Betancuria was built in its present location to avoid pirate attacks and did so successfully until 1593, when the town and church were reduced to rubble. The church is now fully restored and we'll get the chance to visit the church before heading to the village of Vega de Río Palma where we start walking. The path we follow is good underfoot and we'll gradually make our way up into the Parque Rural de Betancuria. This lush area is known as the Betancuria Mountain Range and it does an excellent job of protecting the villages in central Fuerteventura. For approximately an hour we hike along a trail that follows the south-eastern crest of the island and are rewarded with beautiful views over the central part of Fuerteventura. The final part of our walk sees us descend towards through the Barranco (Valley) del Malpaso to the reservoir of Vega de Rio Palma. We end our descent at the hermitage of Virgen de la Peña, the patron saint of Mijas. The shrine was excavated into the surrounding rocks by monks during the 17th Century and we'll have the chance to explore before we finish the day in the village of Pajara. After a stop for refreshments in the village we'll transfer (60mins) back to our accommodation. ASCENT 350M DISTANCE 10KM MEALS BLD DESCENT 450M TIME 4 HOURS WALKING HOURS Day 4: Visit the remote and charming island of Lobos. This morning we pack our swimwear and take a short transfer (20 mins) to Corralejo located on the northern tip of the island. The town enjoys an excellent location with the the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east, dunes to the south and a desert landscape to the west. Once a tiny fishing village, Corralejo has grown in size over the years, but

PAGE 4 it is still home to fishermen's cottages and a bustling harbour. As we head down to the harbour we'll have views of Lobos, a brief 15 mins boat journey away. Described as a haven of peace and tranquillity, the tiny island (5 square kilometres) sits between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and alongside being a designated nature area, it's a protected area for birds due to the rare species that migrate or live there. Lobos del mar or Sea Wolves gained its name from resident seals that used to inhabit the island many years ago. After landing, we pick up a trail which follows the coast and takes us across lava fields and beautiful white sandy beaches. With an entire coastline at just under 14km, Lobos can be walked around in a few hours and during the hike we'll head up Caldera de Lobos (127m), the highest point on the island. The trail as we ascend is rockier underfoot due to the slopes of lava scree, however the views across to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are worth the extra effort! After descending there will be time today for a refreshing dip and we'll hopefully spot petrels, shrikes, bustards, ospreys and Caspian gulls. In the afternoon we make our way back to the mainland before transferring (20 mins) to our accommodation. ASCENT 150M DISTANCE 9KM MEALS BLD DESCENT 150M TIME 3-4 HOURS WALKING HOURS Day 5: Hike from Morro Jable to Cofete across the spine of the Jandía Peninsula. After breakfast we make our way to the south of the island and the peninsula of Jandia. Known for white sandy beaches, deep gorges, steep cliffs and a true feeling of remoteness, Jandia gives a feeling of being truly off the beaten track. We transfer (1.5 hrs) down to the south and although today's transfer is slightly longer, Jandia contains one of the largest natural reserves on the island so is well worth the longer drive. In the past, the wild area of Jandia was cut off from the rest of the island by the sea, however the two sections are now connected by sand which has created some of the best beaches in the world. We start walking near Morro Jable and follow footpaths which are excellent underfoot for the majority of the walk. Occasionally we'll encounter small sections which are slightly rockier underfoot, but not too difficult. After leaving the south coast we walk through a wide range of landscapes, including a footpath which cuts through the dramatic and wild central mountain range of the Jandia Peninsula. As we approach the north coast we'll start descending until we reach the beach at Cofete. On reaching Cofete we'll have time to explore the mysterious Winter House. Built in 1937 by Gustav Winter, the impressive villa with its arches and round tower now stands empty on a remote spot. Rumour has it that during WWII the villa was a clinic for plastic surgeons, with Hitler and Eva Braun being patients before fleeing to Argentina. Whatever the villa's story we'll end the day in Cofete before driving (2.5 hrs) back to our accommodation. ASCENT 300M DISTANCE 10KM MEALS BLD DESCENT 360M TIME 3-4 HOURS WALKING HOURS Day 6: Discover the east coast walking from Pozo Negro to the salt fields of Carmen. We start today by driving (45mins) to Pozo Negro located on the east coast and in the middle of an arid landscape. Pozo Negoro sits at the end of a small tarmaced road and is nothing more than a small cluster of houses facing the sea which gives a real feeling of remoteness. To our right we'll see dramatic high cliffs which fall directly into the Atlantic Ocean, however the main focus of today's walk are the impressive Los Cuchillos or "knives" which are our back drop to today's walk. An area of volcanic eruptions, this dramatic landscape in the central-east of the island may have changed slightly over the years due to erosion and climatic change but it still provides a remarkable region of sharp crests and lush steep slopes. The footpath today is good underfoot and will be dotted with plants,

PAGE 5 such as Euphorbias and Succulents which make the best out of these hard conditions. Euphorbias are more often known as spurge and sometimes mistaken for cacti, however their sap contains latex and is sticky whilst cacti do not. Succulents are water storage plants and survive in this arid landscape due to their amazing ability at surviving through extended periods of drought. We'll encounter both types today along the trail which finishes near Salinas del Carmen, the salt fields of Carmen. Apart from a few houses, the fishing town is more known for it's salt fields and museum. As our walk comes to an end, we'll have the opportunity to visit a salt farm and learn about the ancient tradition which remains unchanged and is still practised today. We end the day with a brief (40mins) transfer back to our accommodation. ASCENT 250M DISTANCE 9KM MEALS BLD DESCENT 250M TIME 3-4 HOURS WALKING HOURS Day 7: Follow the GR 131 via The Calderón of Hondo and Dunes of Corralejo. We end this walking week following sections of the GR 131, the long distance footpath that connects all seven Canary Islands and includes two of the islands' highlights, the crater of Hondo and the dunes of Corralejo. A brief transfer (15min) has us arrive in an area of volcanic cones and it was here 40,000 years ago that the last eruptions on Fuerteventura took place. Today's trail is good underfoot and mainly level with only one steep climb as we head up towards the crater. We start in the village of Lajares which has excellent examples of a molino and a molina. Fuerteventura has a lot of picturesque windmills in various states of repair and although both are windmills, molinos have their millstones on a different floor to which the flour is handled. We'll have time to photograph the windmills before we leave the village and start walking towards the caldron on a trail which snakes its way between various volcanoes. As we get closer to Vulcan Hondo our trail ascends steeply for a short time until we reach the crater. A small viewing platform means we can look down into the crater, which at 70 metres deep is one of the best examples on the island. It won't be long until curious squirrels that live amongst the crater come to say hello, hoping for a bit of our picnic! After enjoying the view we descend back down to the valley floor and continue along the GR 131 as far as Corralejo, where we sailed to Lobos from. After enjoying some refreshments we'll take a short 15min drive to the nearby magnificent dunes which we'll explore before enjoying a refreshing dip. After a great day of walking, it's a brief 30min drive back to our accommodation where after freshening up we'll meet for our final dinner and celebrate an excellent week. ASCENT 220M DISTANCE 5KM MEALS BLD DESCENT 210M TIME 2-3 HOURS WALKING HOURS Day 8: Departure day. Depending on your departure time there may be time to relax in the garden or enjoy a final swim. KE Land Only package ends after breakfast. You can arrange a taxi through the KE leader and combine with other members of the group if possible. Driving time is usually minutes and the cost is approximately Euros. MEALS B

Breakfast is generally continental in style with bread, pastries, honey, jam, cereal, tea, coffee and it's not unusual to enjoy cheese and ham. Lunches will be picnic style, meaning we can find the perfect spot during the day to enjoy lunch on the trail whilst enjoying the views. Dinner on the Canary Islands is a social affair alongside being fresh and colourful. Fish and seafood are popular dishes as well as braised goat and beef. The famed wrinkly potatoes are absolutely delicious, especially when combined with the rather addictive mojo picon sauce. Gofio is a combination of toasted corn/wheat meal and used to thicken stews or popped into desserts! However the island prides itself on queso majorero, a local cheese from goats milk which is excellent and famously known as the best goats cheese in the whole of Spain! Salads and fresh vegetables are in abundance alongside a fantastic range of fruit. Don't forget to sample the excellent open wines, which are enjoyed by the glass or in carafes. A must try are the wonderful after dinner liquors on the island. Fuerteventura has its own micro-climate with the north of the island being slightly sheltered from any weather extremes by neighbouring Lanzarote.
