PAGE 2 Introduction What El Hierro lacks in size this remote Canary Island makes up for with nature on a grand scale and offers one of the most unique landscapes in Europe for a walking holiday. The UNESCO World Biosphere is home to volcanic moonscapes, dramatic cliffs, timeless villages, flower meadows, sculpted lava, lush forests, fragrant groves of juniper and views across to neighbouring La Gomera and Tenerife. Aiming to being 100% sustainable, El Hierro is often overlooked in favour of the larger Canary Islands. However the phrase large treasures come in small packages is no truer than when used to describe this volcanic gem in the Atlantic Ocean. Known as Isla del Meridiano and a compact 280 square kilometres, up until 1492 Columbus described it as the end of the world and even today its remoteness teamed with a breath taking landscape, slow pace of life and simple lifestyle is captivating. We ll sail across from neighbouring Tenerife, where from our base in El Mocanal we explore Valverde, the only landlocked Canarian capital and hike to see the fascinating holy tree of Garoe. From Tigaday we ll walk to San Andres the highest village on the island before summiting Pico de Malpaso (1501m), El Hierro s crowning glory. As a grand finale we hike along El Hierro s spectacular lava coastline, relax in the natural pools at La Maceta, visit La Restinga, the most southern village in Spain and walk through the enchanting rainforest landscape of Sabinosa before flying back to Tenerife. If you re looking for a secret side to the Canary Islands with a wonderful variety of trails, lush vegetation, a dramatic coast and the opportunity to walk on one of the most exceptional islands in the world, then this is the perfect choice. Looking For A Two Week Holiday? For a complete Canary Islands experience, why not combine El Hierro - The Secret Canaries with KE's one week Undiscovered Tenerife and Pico Teide or La Gomera - Jewel of the Canaries holiday. A couple of our dates work back to back and with all holidays beginning and ending at Tenerife airport it couldn't be easier. Is this holiday for you? The walks on El Hierro are at a relaxed, easy pace combined with sightseeing alongside staying in three different villages on the island. The trails are undulating with a mix of rural tracks between villages, volcanic trails, small roads, footpaths through forests and coastal paths. The majority of the trails we use are well-maintained and good underfoot and occasionally we may encounter some loose rock. The walking days will be between 4 to 6 hours with regular breaks. This holiday is suitable for active walkers looking for a walking holiday that combines a rich variety of walks with active sightseeing. Please be aware that because of the ferry and internal flights, a copy of your passport is required after booking. We recommend early booking for this holiday due to the small group size plus limited accommodation and transport connections to and from El Hierro. SCI.1.18 will be run as a 9 day holiday due to limited availability on internal flights between the islands. Day 8 will be a day at leisure to relax in La Restinga and includes an extra night's accommodation in La Restinga plus lunch and dinner. After breakfast on the 5th February you'll take an early flight back to Tenerife North before transferring to Tenerife South for your return international flight. Please contact the KE office for any further information on this departure. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at Tenerife South Airport. Transfer to El Hierro by ferry.

PAGE 3 The group will meet at Tenerife South Airport and a single timed transfer to Los Cristianos Port is included. This transfer will leave the airport at 6pm and is timed to arrive at the port at 6.30pm in time for the 7.30pm ferry to El Hierro. The KE leader will meet the group at the port for the crossing. The ferry takes 2.45 hours and there are a range of services on board including a café serving drinks and snacks. Once everyone is settled on board the leader will brief you on the El Hierro adventure ahead and a picnic style dinner will be provided. After arriving on El Hierro there will be a short transfer (20mins) to El Mocanal for our first night on the island. HOTEL MEALS D Day 2: Explore the capital of Valverde before hiking to the sacred "Garoe" tree. After breakfast we start with a short transfer (10mins) to the capital of El Hierro, Valverde. Located between 600 to 700m this compact city is the only landlocked Canary Islands capital and on a clear day Tenerife's Mount Teide and La Gomera are visible. With streets rising steeply around an abundance of white washed houses and gardens, we'll explore its traditional simple architecture, including the city hall and the 18th Century church Santa María de la Concepción. From Valverde we join paved footpath which is good underfoot leading to the settlement of Tiñor. As we slowly ascend we'll be rewarded with views over El Hierro's north and the hydro wind farm which is working towards making this remarkable island 100% sustainable. Tiñor is the smallest village on El Hierro and famed for its tiny traditional houses with red tiled roofs and village church. Today we'll be walking along sections of the GR131 long distance footpath that links all the Canary Islands and the "water route" which explains the history of water on the island. After Tiñor we'll pass the ruins of La Albarrada, one of three settlements from the first Spanish on the island. Next we hike along a rocky trail which touches the volcanic sides of La Chamuscada before joining a wide trail which offers great views of Meseta de Nisdafe. Fondly referred to as "little Yorkshire," Meseta de Nisdafe is a region of grassy meadows, dry stone walling and grazing livestock. Finally we reach the famed holy tree "Garoé." After learning about El Hierro's most famous flora and its history, we'll gradually descend back to El Mocanal. After our arrival back there will be time to freshen up before we regroup for our first dinner on the island! HOTEL DESCENT 750M ASCENT 700M TIME 5 HRS WALKING HOURS DISTANCE 14KM MEALS BLD Day 3: Walk to San Andres (1050m) El Hierro's highest village with views over the Golfo Valley. Today we leave Mocanal and start with a short transfer (15mins) to the Mirador de la Peña viewpoint. Designed by Lanzarote's famous architect Cesar Manrique, this wonderful building was built to complement its surroundings and the fragile landscape. Manrique was an architectural pioneer who worked hand in hand with nature. Over the years he created a number of colourful cactus gardens and remarkable buildings using the volcanic landscape of the Canary Islands. After admiring the views we set off on a footpath that gradually ascends for approximately 6km up to the Nisdafe Plateau. Created around 160,000 years ago this green region is fondly known as "Little Yorkshire" due to its green meadows and grazing livestock! The plateau is also called "the singing land" because of the noise created when walking over hollow lava flows. Next we arrive in the village of San Andres (1050m), the highest settlement on the island and enjoy lunch in a local restaurant. After a relaxing lunch we continue ascending (3kms) to reach Mirador the Jinama (1200m). From here we are rewarded with a stunning view over the gulf of El Golfo. Here, approximately 50,000 year ago the northern flank of the island collapsed creating a spectacular landscape and the present day Golfo Valley. After admiring the breath-taking views we'll slowly start our descent to Tigaday. Our footpath takes us through more spectacular laurel our leader will tell us about the old nomadic tradition of the island, where the local herreños moved homes depending on the seasons. Before reaching our accommodation

PAGE 4 we'll visit the Church of Candelaria. Built in Baroque style the church has a separated bell tower built on the hill behind the church. Finally we reach our apartments in the village of Tigaday located in the rural region of La Frontera. After breakfast we leave La Frontera and transfer (40 min) up to El Morcillo (1000m). This lush forested area is popular on weekends with local families is home to some of the oldest and tallest pine trees on the island. Pinus canariensis or the Canary Island pine is a large evergreen tree native to the Canary Islands, mainly El Hierro, Tenerife, La Palma and Gran Canaria. The pine flourishes under subtropical conditions and variable amounts of rainfall, however it cannot tolerate hard frosts or extreme low temperatures. The trial we follow is soft underfoot and takes us through this wonderful region of forest up to to Cruz de Los Reyes. This famous landmark is the halfway point of the annual La Bajada de La Virgen pilgrimage. On the 24th September each year the Virgin of the Kings is carried 37km from her shrine to the capital of Valverde via Cruz de Los Reyes. This festival is celebrated occasion where the islanders come together and enjoy a picnic lunch together here, the half- way point. From here we follow a wide, open trail that takes us up to the highest point on the island, Pico de Malpaso (1501m). From the summit we are rewarded with spectacular views over El Golfo and after enjoying the stunning panorama, we'll descend on a wide footpath which is part of the GR 131. The trail takes us on end of El Golfo and finally through areas rich in laurel trees before finally arriving in Tagaday. Tonight we'll head out and enjoy dinner in a local restaurant. APARTMENT DESCENT 1450M ASCENT 750M TIME 6 HRS WALKING HOURS DISTANCE 15KM MEALS BLD Day 5: Walk in search of El Hierro's giant lizard and hike along a panoramic coastal path. Today is a day of walking and quirkiness from giant lizards to the world's smallest hotel, volcanic vineyards and open museums! This morning we start by walking directly from our apartments and through Tigaday. Along the initial part of the trail we'll see areas rich in banana, pineapple, tropical fruit and vineyards. As the smallest wine producer of the Canary Islands, El Hierro's wine have steadily grown in the popularity and the island is now producing some excellent wines with vines growing at an altitude of 125m to 700m on the slopes of extinct volcanoes. As we leave Tigaday and enter the Valley del Golfo we arrive at Poblado de Guinea, the oldest settlement on the island. The hamlet is now an outdoor museum and tells the story of Guinea originally inhabited by the bimbaches, the very first inhabitants on El Hierro. We'll get to explore the museum's houses as we follow a guided route through the village. After leaving Guinea next is Lagartario, home of the Giant Lizard of El Hierro. Endemic to El Hierro, the lizard with its broad head can grow up to 60cms in length. After keeping our eyes peeled for the giant lizard we head to the smallest hotel in the world the Hotel Punta Grande. Located on a rocky headland, the hotel has been listed in the Guiness Book of Records as the World's Smallest Hotel! After lunch in a local restaurant we'll enjoy a panoramic walk along footpaths of lava to the natural pools of La Maceta, the perfect place for an end of day dip. Finally we walk back to our apartments in Tigaday.

Today we begin with a short transfer (30 min) to "Mirador de Lomo Negro" or the Black Lomo Viewpoint. Located on the edge of the youngest lava beds on the island this volcanic landscape is less than 250 years old. This is also the location of the last known volcanic activity in After admiring the views we slowly ascend on an excellent footpath taking us to the area of Sabinar. A rich uninhabited area and open to the trade winds, this wonderful landscape is fondly known as the "enchanted forest" due to its captivating sabinas. A species of conifer that inhabit Mediterranean regions, the sabina is officially the national symbol of the island. Growing up to 8 metres in height, this specific area of El Hierro is a fairytale landscape of twisted junipers that have been shaped by the wind. This wonderful area is a highlight of El Hierro and a must see on the island. We'll walk along a trail through the area of La Dehesa which brings us to the pretty church which is the Sanctuary of The Virgen de Los Reyes, the patron of the island. After visiting the church we make our way along a lovely footpath which offers superb views of El Julan, the amazing desolate slope on the south of the island. This incredible area is a favourite grazing area for local shepherds. In the distance we'll have glimpses of the Orchilla Lighthouse which was home to the Prime Meridian until it was changed to Greenwich in 1885 and represented the "end of the world" before the discovery of America. We end today's walk in the Petroglyphs Interpretation Centre before transferring (40mins) to our apartments La Marina in La Restinga. APARTMENT DESCENT 450M ASCENT 1050M TIME 6 HRS WALKING HOURS DISTANCE 15KM MEALS BLD Day 7: Hike from Spain's most southern village to the ochre cliffs of El Tacoron. For our final walking day we walk directly from our accommodation in the fishing village of La Restinga. The hamlet which has grown in size is known for the clarity of the sea and has become a top spot for diving due to the underwater lava and caves that hug the coastline. The surrounding La Marine Reserve was created in 1996 and the surrounding waters are the warmest of the Canary Island archipelago. On leaving La Restinga we climb gradually through a wild landscape to reach the village of El Pinar which is famous for its figs and almonds alongside producing excellent wine. Today we'll enjoy a relaxed lunch and tapas in a small local tavern. In the afternoon we'll gradually descend to the natural bay of El Tacorón. This area of the ocean is fondly known as the Sea of Calm and as we walk we are likely to see small, local vineyards. We are surrounded by a wonderful kaleidoscope of nature as the colours of the ocean mix with the black volcanic sand and the bright red and ochre of the surrounding hills. The final part of our walk sees us pass vineyards and colouful private gardens whilst all the time we are surrounded by great views of the Mar de Las Calmas and El Julan. A short transfer (15mins) sees us back at our apartments in La Restinga. After freshening up we'll head out for our final dinner on the island. 6 PAGE 6 After an early breakfast we transfer to El Hierro Airport for a 9.10am flight to Tenerife North Airport. Here the KE leader will say goodbye to the group before the short flight to neighbouring Tenerife and we should have good views of La Palma before landing at Tenerife North. On arrival a representative will transfer the group to Tenerife South Airport to arrive at approximately noon. Food With influences from Europe, Africa and South America the cuisine of the Canary Islands is varied and colourful. Breakfast is traditionally continental in style with bread, cheese, cakes, biscuits, jams, honey, tea and coffee. Lunch will either be a picnic lunch (sandwich, juice, water, chocolate or snack bar, fruit etc) or taken in a local restaurant. Dinner is always a social affair on El Hierro and we ll get to enjoy a wide range of local restaurants. Enyesques (tapas) are very much part of Canarian life and include the famed wrinkly potatoes served with mojo sauce! Here oil, vinegar, garlic, salt, red pepper and herbs are blended together to create either rojo mojo (red) or verde mojo (green) a delicious accompaniment served alongside fish, meat or vegetables. Hearty soups are a delicious and filling with fish, chickpeas, chunky vegetables and potatoes all being popular choices. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean fish is popular and either baked or fried after being marinated. For desserts, ingredients are simple (honey, almonds, cane sugar). On El Hierro a speciality is a cake made from soft cheese and small ring shaped pastries. The island has a long wine making tradition with an excellent selection of red and white wines.

PAGE 7 Joining Arrangements & Transfers On day 1 a group transfer from Tenerife South Airport to the port of Los Cristianos is included. This transfer will leave the airport promptly at 5.30pm and will arrive at the port of Los Cristianos at 6.00pm. An English speaking driver will accompany the transfer from the airport to the port where the KE leader will meet the group. The group and the KE leader will take the ferry to El Hierro (2 hours 45mins). On day 8 the group will take an internal flight from El Hierro to Tenerife North. This flight is due to depart at 9.30am and land at Tenerife North Airport. From Tenerife North Airport a private transfer will be included back to Tenerife South. This transfer is due to arrive at Tenerife South at approximately noon. (Please note that the last ferry to El Hierro leaves at 7.30pm, therefore it is incredibly important that the group is at the port at 6.30pm at the latest). Accommodation During this holiday we stay 2 nights in El Mocenal, 3 nights in Tigaday and 2 nights in La Restinga. In El Mocenal we stay 2 nights in a family run traditional hotel with simply furnished en-suite rooms. For 3 nights in Tigaday and 2 nights in La Restinga we use simple apartments on a twin share which are en-suite. El Hierro has very little tourist infrastructure and apartment accommodation is simple, however the experience of staying on the island more than makes up for a lack of hotel facilities! Please be aware that during this holiday the group may be spread over various apartments in each location. Accommodation is on a twin-share and en-suite basis therefore if you are travelling by yourself you will be paired up with another traveller of the same sex. There are a limited number of single rooms available so please enquire at the time of booking on availability and single supplement costs. Group Leader & Support Staff The group will be accompanied throughout the holiday by a local English speaking leader. Spending Money Approximately Euros should be sufficient for miscellaneous expenses, including a reasonable amount of wine with meals. If you are intending to buy expensive souvenirs, you should budget accordingly. ATMs are available on arrival at Tenerife South Airport and on El Hierro. Free KE Gift We give you a free gift as a way to thank all our clients who book a KE holiday. Choose from KE T-shirts, buffs, KE trek bags* (where applicable) plus many more. You can however purchase a KE trek bag for Delivery outside of the UK will be charged. Baggage Allowance We ask you to restrict your baggage to one main bag and a small day pack. As you will have to carry your own bags from the vehicle to the hotels (including possibly upstairs), the KE trekbag is not necessarily appropriate for this trip. We recommend packing light in a bag with wheels or a rucksack for this holiday. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status

PAGE 8 for each departure in Dates and Prices table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements. General Information Passport & Visas A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required for visits to countries outside the EU. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. If you are travelling outside the EU you should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for each country that you visit. Visa Europe UK and USA passport holders do not require a visa. Health & Vaccinations You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations. UK residents should obtain a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This entitles you to state provided medical treatment, but is not a substitute for medical travel insurance which is still vital when travelling overseas. Currency The unit of currency in Europe is the Euro. Electricity Supply & Plug We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items at: Preparing For Your Holiday This is a relaxed paced walking holiday on undulating trails therefore it makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on any active holiday, getting plenty of fresh air and some additional exercise. The fitter you are, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. Regular walking is the best preparation so lace up your boots and try to get out on a variety of trails as often as possible. Travel Aware As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices' Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: for essential travel advice and tips.

PAGE 9 KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe. Should the FCO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. We receive regular updates direct from the FCO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground. If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office. Climate The islands of the Canaries are a year-round holiday destination with what is often described as eternal spring conditions. El Hierro has its own mini micro-climate characterised by the Canary Gulf Stream. There is a constant sea breeze which ensures the island has year round mild weather. El Hierro holds more cloud than the drier Canary Islands and with slightly higher rainfall, it is incredibly green. During the period from September to March, we can expect daytime temperatures ranging from 16 to 24 degrees Centigrade, becoming progressively cooler as we gain height in the mountains. When walking in the cloud forests areas temperatures can be even lower, so it is always good to pack some some warmer clothing than is traditionally required for the Canary Islands. Evenings can be chilly so you should remember to bring a few warmer items of clothing and the Atlantic Ocean is perfect for a bracing swim!
