Ypres was a flourishing place of commerce during the Middle Ages, when the city was one of the leading cloth centres in Flanders, along with Bruges and Ghent. The impressive Cloth Hall is evidence of these years of glory. St. Martin s Cathedral and the superb fortresses also date back to this period. The charming city was reduced to a huge pile of rubble during the First World War. Ypres was almost completely destroyed by four years of senseless violence but the people of Ypres succeeded in rebuilding their city with an appreciation for the history of the place. The largest memorial to the First World War, the Menin Gate, is the spot where the Last Post is sounded every evening at 8 o clock, an unforgettable experience. Housed in the Cloth Hall, the In Flanders Fields Museum uses firsthand accounts and stateoftheart techniques to tell the story and preserve the memory of WWI. Ypres is a city with a smalltown feel that cannot fail to charm. The city of Ypres and other instances will remember and commemorate the historic events of The In Flanders Fields Museum presents two special exhibitions. Gone West (Province West Flanders) plans exceptional concerts in the region with the unique finale in Ypres, in addition to spectacular land art installation 600,000 sculptures 600,000 names (Coming World Remember Me) at the Palingbeek domain. These events are completed with more traditional remembrance moments, organised by the city of Ypres and other authorities/organisations. But there is more The 45th Cats Parade walks through the streets of Ypres on 13 May. And the Ypres Museum opens its doors in the Cloth Halls in summer an unusual museum about the extraordinary past of Ypres. You can expect this and much more in Ypres in YPRES

Ypres remembers CENTENARY FIRST WORLD WAR From October 1914 to October 1918 the First World War battlefield was just a few kilometres from Ypres city centre. No less than five bloody battles were fought in the famous Ypres Salient. Raging nearly 100 years ago, this war claimed 600,000 victims in this part of the world. Some 425,000 graves and the many names of missing people on monuments now bear witness to this painful history. The present Ypres Salient landscape is therefore the only last remaining witness. Many museums, WWI sites and relics tell today the history of 100 years ago in order to never forget the past. Ever since 2014, the year in which the events to mark the centenary of the First World War began, Ypres has taken pride in creating the best possible commemorative initiatives. After all, Ypres, the City of Peace, has many years of experience in this area. In the light of the Tourism + incentive, the focus has been placed on a number of principles, such as respect, harmony, good hospitality, consolidation, accessibility, internationalisation and a universal message of peace. A comprehensive overview of the planned events and exhibitions is available on and 4 YPRES 2018

COMING WORLD REMEMBER ME Coming World Remember Me is one of the projects of Gone West, the cultural remembrance programme of the province of West Flanders. This project invited visitors to participate in remembering and commemorating actively during the five remembrance years. This was done by making a clay figurine that symbolises one of the 600,000 victims of the First World War on Belgian soil. The Name List of the In Flanders Field Museum is the basis. The end is near. Until 25th of March you can still go to the permanent workshop of Coming World Remember Me at the visitors centre De Kazematten in Ypres to make a figurine. The workshop is open from Tuesday through to Saturday from 13:30 to 18:00 hrs. From 30 March all the 600,000 names and 600,000 sculptures are joined in a spectacular land art installation by artist Koen Van Mechelen. Visitors centre De Kazematten: Bollingstraat Ypres (100 m from the Menin Gate) Provincial domain De Palingbeek: Palingbeekstraat 8902 Zillebeke/Ieper LAST POST Every evening at 8 pm precisely, the Last Post has been sounded since 1928 under the imposing arches of the Menin Gate. After the First World War, various grateful citizens decided to create the Last Post Association. From January 1 to December 31 and in all weather conditions the buglers of the Last Post Association play the Last Post. On 11 November at 11 am a special Last Post ceremony takes place to commemorate Armistice. The Last Post Association has been organising two remembrance concerts around 11 November under the name The Great War Remembered for many years. The Last Post Association has developed a free app to help keep visitors uptodate with the latest news about the daily tribute. The app also offers an opportunity every day to read the story of a specific soldier who is referred to on the Menin Gate as missing. YPRES

ART INSTALLATION COMINGWORLDREMEMBERME AT DE PALINGBEEK DOMAIN From 30 March the 600,000 sculptures are joined in a land art installation at the provincial domain De Palingbeek, south of Ypres. These 600,000 sculptures linked to 600,000 names recall the futility of war: terday, today and tomorrow. Tens of thousands of people from Flanders and the rest of the world helped create ComingWorldRememberMe: together they made 600,000 sculptures. Every sculpture represents a victim who lost their life in Belgium during or because of the consequences of the Great War. Every sculpture has a dog tag, the universal identification system for front soldiers. The dog tags combine the name of a WWI casualty with the name of the person who made the figurine. Each dog tag thus literally links the past to the present. The dog tags are brought together by artist Koen Vanmechelen in a transparent work of art. The project is the initiative of Gone West, the cultural remembrance umbrella of the province of West Flanders. The names of the victims were brought together in he Names List, compiled by the In Flanders Field Museum in Ypres. From April 2018, the impressive installation at the Palingbeek domain stretches over no man s land and The Bluff: the stage of one of the fiercest battles in WWI. The installation covers 3 hectares. A large part of that surface is occupied by the clay figurines that are given a place among large art works by artist Koen Vanmechelen. You follow a walking route from the visitors pavilion along the sculptures, the WWI site The Bluff that ends at the vantage point over No man s land. A visit to the site is possible from the opening weekend of 31 March2 April! More info about the opening weekend can be found at the website of CWRM, Until 11 November 2018 the art installation can be visited with a guide or individually Danny Poissonnier YPRES

» The first floor of the Cloth Hall can be reached through the In Flanders Fields Museum. A visit to the Museum can be combined with a trip to the Belfry tower. The visitor centre for Ypres and Westhoek, the Museum Research Centre, the Museum café and the Museum entrance are located on the ground floor. See the Museums section for further details about the Museum. Ypres visits... CLOTH HALL, BELFRY, CARILLON As an example and certainly as a reflection of its power and wealth, the city decided in the 12th century to have its public buildings constructed in stone. This was done with a sense of ambition: the Ypres Cloth Hall and Belfry were recognised in the 13th century as being one of the most impressive civil buildings in Europe! The Cloth Hall was used as a place for selling and storing cloth on the (now covered) waterway, the River Ieperlee. Construction of the Cloth Hall was completed in During the First World War the building was completely destroyed except for a section of the tower and some walls. Reconstruction was supervised by architects J. Coomans and P.A. Pauwels. Some belfries are detached while others form part of a city hall or cloth hall. The Ypres Belfry forms the 70metre high Cloth Hall Tower, stressing the huge importance of the cloth trade, which was the basis of Ypres prosperity and power during the Middle Ages. The Belfry was the safest and bestprotected place in the city during the Middle Ages. It was also used to store laissezpassers and the treasury. The tower was also used as a place to keep weapons and as a lookout post. The base of the Ypres Belfry, the Donkerpoort, managed to survive over the centuries and through the First World War. It is the passage under the belfry. Dating back to about 1200, the sturdy vaults represent some of the very rare remnants of medieval Ypres that managed to survive the destruction during the war. The Donkerpoort is also a prime example of early Gothic architecture in Ypres. Above the Donkerpoort, under the coat of arms, is a statue of Our Lady of Thuyne, the city s patron saint. NIEUWERCK The Nieuwerck was built in 1619 against the east face of the Cloth Hall and City Hall. Resting on a row of pointed arches with large cross windows and a classical church window, this construction still has a fairly Gothic appearance. However, the decorations in the tympanums tend towards the Renaissance. The first plans date back to The building was restored in 1862 before being completely destroyed on 22 November 1914, except for the pillars. In 2018 the Yper Museum will open here, a state of the art museum about the rich history of Ypres YPRES 2018

CARILLON CLOTH HALL Starting in the 13th and 14th centuries, centres with city charters were allowed to own city bells, including Ypres. The bells in the belfry tower played a tune before striking the hour. The number of bells steadily increased over the centuries but the quality left something to be desired. After the First World War the bells became a full grown carillon with 49 bells. They were completely restored in Besides the live sounds of the Ypres carillon, you can also hear five other peace carillons from all over the world. Loughborough Carillon & War Memorial (Queen s Park, Loughborough, Leicestershire, UK) The War Memorial Carillon Cape Town (City Hall, Cape Town, South Africa) The Peace Tower Carillon (Parliament, Ottawa, Canada) The University of Sydney War Memorial Carillon (Sydney, Australia) Carillon of the central library Catholic University of Leuven (Mgr. People visiting the tower may even play a tune if they wish. 1» The numbers refer to their location on the city map. The red line on the map gives a suggestion for an individual city walk.» Be sure to download the free I Ieper app to your smartphone or tablet. OLD SEIGNORY BUILDING The facade of this 15th century building displays a series of medallions representing the seven deadly sins. It was temporarily used as a city hall after the First World War. Now it is used as a court house for the chamber of commerce. 6 YPRES

ST. MARTIN S CATHEDRAL The cathedral is a former Episcopal church in Gothic style reconstructed after the First World War. Bishop Jansenius and Count Robert of Bethune, the Lion of Flanders, lie buried here. Cornelius Jansenius is the most famous Bishop of Ypres. His main work, Augustinus remained unpublished until 1640, two years after his death. Jansenius wrote there that only God can have pity on our souls. Christians cannot save their souls themselves and may not purchase them by way of indulgences. The work by the Bishop of Ypres was condemned in 1642, mainly because of the influence of the Jesuits. The work was finally judged to be heretical and was prohibited by the Pope. Robrecht van Béthune passed away on 17 September He is the only Flemish count to be buried in Ypres, in deference to his express wish. He still enjoys the reputation of having been a popular and goodnatured count, who fought for the independence of the cities and of Flanders, his county. The cathedral has a beautiful side altar with an altarpiece and the miracle statue of Our Lady of Thuyne. The cathedral is open to the public but not during services. The 100metre tower is not open to the public. The Lapidarium next to the cathedral contains the older ruins of St. Martine s deanery. One of the few remaining ruins in the city centre, the lapidarium is a permanent reminder of the destruction caused by the First World War. The death in 1937 of the city architect Jules Coomans may be one of the reasons why this monastery has not been rebuilt. The beautifully restored and huge painting by Joris Liebaert hangs in an aisle of the cathedral. It illustrates the stormy period of the Soege of Ypres in 1383 when the population of Ghent and the English fought over Ypres. The population of Ypres then invoked H. Mary for mercy. Apparently their prayers were heard because the siege was stopped. That was the origin of the worship of Our Lady of Thuyne YPRES 2018

MENIN GATE This memorial in the form of a Roman triumphal arch displays the names of 54,896 soldiers of the then British Empire who went missing in action. This memorial lists the names from the beginning of the war until 15 August Soldiers reported missing after 16 August 1917 until the end of the war are mentioned on panels at Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passchendaele. There are 34,984 of them. The Menin Gate was inaugurated on 24 July 1927 by Herbert Plumer. The site of the Menin Gate was occupied for centuries by another gate that had different names throughout history. The gate was originally called the Hangwaertpoort and subsequently renamed Antwerp Gate. When Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban established the ramparts in the 17th century, the gate was transformed, assuming a classical appearance with distinct Doric qualities. Napoleon paid a visit to the city on 8 July 1803, whereupon the gate was called the Napoleon Gate. In1815 it was given its present name: Menin Gate. It was demolished in 1862 and this entrance was no more than 13 metres wide in the ramparts. During the First World War the British troops marched through this gate to defend the Ypres Salient. 8» Every evening at 8 o clock the Last Post is sounded under the Menin Gate by buglers from the Last Post Association. YPRES

LILLE GATE The Lille Gate forms part of the fortification lines around Ypres. It is the oldest still standing city gate from the 14th century. Connecting two parts of the Ypres ramparts, the Lille Gate is completed with Burgundian towers. It separates the Major Canal from the Castle Canal and is a combination of a water and land gate. On the lefthand side of the Lille Gate is the entrance to the vaulted room, while on the righthand side is the lock chamber with lock dates for the streams and moat waters. It is through this gate that the roughly 2.5 metre deep River Ieperlee enters the city. On the inside wall of the gate old signposts showing the way to British cemeteries can still be seen. During the war the gate was one of the key passages to the front line and was used more frequently than the Menin Gate as this path could be more effectively protected against enemy artillery fire. The Lille Gate is also located on the route of the ramparts, a walk amidst greenery around the centre of Ypres. SAINTGEORGE S MEMORIAL CHURCH This Anglican church was built in following the plans of London architect Sir Reginald Blomfield. This Memorial Church holds many reminders of the First World War. Everything down to the furniture was donated by British associations, regiments or individuals. After the Menin Gate, it is the most important monument for the fallen in Ypres centre. The church is open to the public daily. Next to the church is Eton School, which was built after WWI. For several years this has catered for the children of British workers seeing to the upkeep of the cemeteries. 4 Children can follow the treasure hunt, Speuren naar Ciper [Tracking Ciper] on this route. (ramparts route and treasure hunt can be obtained from the tourist information centre) YPRES 2018

FISHMARKET The Fish Market is a narrow cobbled square located between Boterstraat and Seminariestraat. You take Boterstraat to pass under the Fish Market gate. The Ypres Fish Market obviously used to be a place where fish was sold, but it is now better known as the goingout district. In the old tollhouse (1899), also called Minckhuisje, the fishmongers had to pay toll. A little further on are two covered stalls. The Fish Gate with Neptune, god of the sea, was originally built in 1714 but was also destroyed in WWI and had to be rebuilt. 18 COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is responsible for identifying and seeing to the upkeep of the graves of members of the Commonwealth forces who lost their lives during the two world wars. They are also in charge of establishing and maintaining monuments in memory of soldiers with no known graves. The headquarters located at 82 Elverdingestraat is open to visitors seeking information about these cemeteries. 21 RAMPARTS CEMETERY This originally French military cemetery was used by the British from February 1915 to April The cemetery still has 198 graves in which 163 Britons, 10 Canadians, 11 Australians and 14 New Zealanders (including 10 Maoris) are laid to rest. Another four bodies were buried there in Reservoir Cemetery is another Commonwealth cemetery, a walking distance away within the old Ypres city walls (19). Buried there are 2,614 war casualties, 1,035 of whom are unidentified. 19 tel. +32 (0) , YPRES

DE KAZEMATTEN INFORMATION CENTRE The difference between casemates and souterrains is that the latter do not have gun holes and are used as storage areas. Casemates were designed to accommodate artillery and thus had gun holes. Both were theoretically bombproof. The souterrains were known locally as Kazematten and are still called that today. Starting in roughly 1680 the souterrains were used as a military bakery for the garrisons of various armies. The rooms were so well protected that they even resisted the modern artillery systems used during the First World War. That is why, in October 1914, when the shelling of Ypres began, the souterrains were used for shelter. The British troops turned the old military bakery into an officers mess, command post, dressing post and restingplace. De Kazematten information centre in the Bollingstraat is located behind St. James Church, 100 metres from the Menin Gate. The centre comprises five large rooms that have been restored and adapted with due respect for the architectural past. Located there is an elegant pub operating under the SintBernardus (Watou) banner and offering local beers and snacks. The Ten decades of Ypres ramparts interpretation centre has been set up in room 4, offering visitors the opportunity to discover the Ypres rampart landscape with its unique historical and cultural references and the beautiful natural surroundings that have developed so close to the historical centre. Setting off from the souterrains you can easily reach the ramparts to discover the rampart routes (see Walking/cycling/touring ). You will also have an opportunity in the final room to get involved in the Coming World Remember Me workshop (untill 25th of March) YPRES 2018

KAZEMATTEN HOUTEN PAARD The Kazematten van het Houten Paard (the casemates of the wooden horse) were built around 1680 following the plans of Vauban, the great military engineer of Louis XIV. These 3 unique souterrains are part of the 17th century walls surrounding the city of Ypres. Over the centuries these souterrains were used to store ammunition and military equipment, and were used as sleeping quarters and shelter for the troops who defended Ypres during the many sieges. The British troops during the First World War used the souterrains as an officers mess. Their command headquarters and field hospital were also based in Hotel de Remparts, as the casemates were ironically called. It was also the home of the famous British trench gazette The Wipers Times. And now there is a micro brewery operating under the SintBernardus (Watou) banner in this unique location. 22» On Saturday afternoon the brewer will take you on a tour of the brewery and obviously top the visit off with a tasting session of Wipers Times 14, 16 and Grottenbeer. A visit is organised every 30 minutes between 3 pm and 5 pm (NL or EN). Houtenpaard 1, 8900 Ypres AMMUNITION DUMP The ammunition dump dates back to 1817 and was built on the foundations of a former French ammunition dump by the army of the Netherlands under William I. The building survived WWI, and was restored in The ammunition dump marks the end of the ramparts route. 34 YPRES

REMEMBRANCE TREES As many as 138 remembrance trees have been planted along the Ypres Salient in spots where the first front lines cross a (public) road or path. The trees are recognisable from the metalcoloured baskets surrounding them. Red baskets indicate the German front line and blue the Allied (French and/or British) front line. These colours reflect the colours featured on the frontline maps. Most of the baskets have an information board showing historical photographs of the spot where they stand and details about the location of the front lines. CANAL EMBANKMENT JOHN MCCRAE SITE The famous Essex Farm Cemetery, also on the YpresYser Canal, is where John McCrae wrote his worldfamous In Flanders Fields poem on 2 and 3 May 1915, in the infirmary to which he was assigned. Today, you can also visit the canal embankment itself besides the military cemetery and the fortified shelters in the canal banks. Information signs and a signposted walking path lead you through this important site. 15 yearold Joe Strudwick, one of the youngest British fallen, is also buried here. Permanently open, accessible via the Diksmuidseweg. YPRES SALIENT CEMETERIES No Belgian or German cemeteries are to be found within the Ypres area. The largest Belgian cemetery in this part of the world is located in Houthulst.
