1 Malta, Sardinia, Sicily dd& Pantelleria A wonderful Mediterranean treat! Four islands, each different in their own way. This trip is not just for those who like to cross off the must sees. On each island, you ll gain a thorough understanding of how the locals live. The trip includes 7 nights in Sardinia, 3 nights in Pantelleria, 8 nights in Sicily and 4 nights in Malta. An extended stopover in Rome or Hong Kong on the way home is easily arranged. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean, presenting a rather rugged mountainscape, balanced by placid bays. In rural parts, stone-walled neolithic fortresses can still be seen in the fields. Sardinian towns and cities, especially those along the coast, have a rich tradition of shellfish and seafood while inland towns and cities are known for game and farm produce, most notably its capers, olives and Pecorino sardo. The sea around this large Mediterranean Island is among the most beautiful and transparent in all the world. The colour of the water on the Costa Smerelda has to be seen to believed! Between Sicily and Tunisia lies the tiny volcanic island of Pantelleria. While Italian, the Arabic influence in architecture and culture is undeniable. Its pre-history of dwellings and artifacts takes you back 35,000 years, and bronze-age defensive ramparts are still found here. It played a strategic part in World War II due to its coveted trans-continental location in the Straits of Sicily. Much of the black-rock island is covered in vineyards, and those who love sweeter wines might develop a taste for the regional tipple Passita. Sicily is billed as perhaps the world s first true cosmopolitan, multi-racial society. Asians, Africans and Europeans have all ruled this place at various stages. Forget your impression left by The Godfather Sicily is a friendly, vibrant, bustling island fringed with golden orchards, lush forests and unforgettable soaring Mount Etna. If year-round sunshine and 7,000 years worth of living history is your thing, Malta should be on your itinerary. This tiny island is a travellers dream, because you can take in everything within a small radius, sampling the architecture (both grand and quaint), a stunning fortified harbour, the rocky landscape, traditional hilltop towns, fishing villages, and an upbeat lively capital city, all against the languid backdrop of the magnificent Mediterranean.

4 Importantly, Pantelleria is not a traditional tourist destination and operates on what the locals call Panta time. It is rustic, slow moving and you will not find the usual shops, tourist buses and cafes. The hotel is comfortable, but please, bring your patience, positive attitude and do not expect things like they are in other tourist destinations. These characteristics are its main charm! It has not changed for many years (think Pacific Islands attitude, in the Mediterranean). Sicily 8 nights Day 13, Oct 8th We depart Pantelleria for Palermo, Sicily (flight to be advised). Noto is one of the finest expressions of Baroque architecture in Southeast Sicily. The old town laid in the same place of Noto Vecchia, that was destroyed in 1693 and then rebuilt in the present site only 8km eastwards. Situated in one of the loveliest maritime places of the Mediterranean Sea, Siracusa is marked by its clean white buildings and the beauty of its medieval and baroque architecture. Our tour includes visits to the cathedral at the very heart of the Ortygia Island, the fountain Arethusa and the famous archeological site. Dating from Roman times is the large elliptical amphitheatre, visible in the area carved out of living rock; the upper section of the cavea, formed of square-hewn blocks, has disappeared, destroyed by the elements and by plunder. The size of this structure is outdone only by the Colosseum of Rome and the Area of Verona. The cavea is subdivided into quadrants by little staircases and is crossed by two corridors. It is still possible to make out the inscriptions on the stone, which served to identify seating. Under the nearby little church of S. Nicolò, you can still see the piscina (pool) used in the clearing of the arena and which allowed flooding of the arena for the stating of naval battles. This afternoon we continue to Taormina, the world famous resort town of Sicily. We will check into the Excelsior Palace where we will have dinner.
