2 WELCOME TO Lanzarote Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Islands, lying 80 miles off the coast of Africa and about 650 miles from mainland Spain. The island measures 40 miles from north to south and around 16 miles east to west with a warm and stable climate all year round. Situated in the northeast of Lanzarote, Costa Teguise is a popular resort and attracts many visitors. Here you will find an extensive promenade with several large sandy beaches and all of the amenities you require on your holiday. Our walking itinerary covers most parts of the island, encompassing dramatic views and landscapes. The volcanoes have created a chain of hills which stretch down the island s spine. From these hills the vistas change before your eyes as the sun and clouds pass overhead, eclipsing in a kaleidoscope of colours that sparkle on the volcanic craters. The northwest of the island is famous for its coastal scenery with breathtaking cliffs and powerful seas. We also visit Lanzarote s smaller neighbour, La Graciosa, which can be reached by 2 Call or visit hfholidays.co.uk a short ferry journey. As you step off the ferry in Caleta del Sebo you also step back in time on this tranquil island. There are no cars, only long golden beaches and marvellous views across the channel, El Rio, to the majestic cliffs of Lanzarote s northern coastline. Tradition has been embraced by the islanders, but so has the foresight of the artist César Manrique who, after studying art abroad, returned to Lanzarote and campaigned tirelessly for the island to remain unspoilt by the mass tourism of the 1970 s. As a consequence, tourism and tradition today sit hand in hand thanks to his ideas and stunning designs which have left his mark on the island. From modern holiday resorts, small villages, remote valleys, hilltop views and stunning landscapes, Lanzarote is a Canary Island with a lot to offer.

3 ACCOMMODATION SANDS BEACH RESORT Avenida Islas Canarias 18 Costa Teguise Lanzarote Tel: The 4-star Sands Beach Resort nestles at the quiet end of Costa Teguise, with a lovely beachfront location. Just a short walk along the promenade takes you to the bustling resort of Costa Teguise. BEDROOMS The resort complex has 346 en-suite apartments, in whitewashed villas of one or two storeys. The apartments are built around individual plazas around their own swimming pools; our guests will all be placed around the same plaza. All apartments have their own kitchenette including kettle, fridge and microwave, a patio, balcony or veranda, satellite TV, hairdryer, safe deposit box (small charge) and direct dial telephone. FACILITIES There are six swimming pools and a private lagoon with a sandy beach. The large pool at Plaza Verde and the Lagoon Pool are heated. Pool towels are available for a small refundable deposit. There s a beachfront bar, a cabaret club and an evening bar. There s a well stocked supermarket on site, a fully equipped games room, an all weather tennis court, gym, wellness centre (treatments are at an additional cost) and an internet area. MEALS All our holidays include breakfast and evening meal. All meals are taken in La Hacienda, a rusticstyle restaurant. Please note that there is a short open air walk to the restaurant. Breakfast Breakfast is served from 7am in La Hacienda. This is buffet style and you can choose from a variety of hot and cold items. The chef will also cook you fresh eggs on the spot. Evening meal This is a simple international buffet served in La Hacienda. There s a selection of different salads, hot dishes and vegetables (with a show chef cooking fresh meat or fish), fresh fruit, dessert and coffee. Lunch You may be able to purchase a picnic lunch from the hotel. 4 Guided Walking ITINERARY A unique feature of our Guided Walking holidays is the daily choice of walks. Each evening your leaders will give a short talk about the options for the next day and answer any questions that you may have. In Lanzarote you ll have a choice of two guided walks on each walking day. The cost of the transport to and from your walks each day is included in the cost of your holiday. Please note that the list of walks outlined Easier Walks: 5 to 7 miles (8-11km) sometimes on rough and stony paths. A finalised itinerary will be available at the resort and your leaders will talk every evening about the next day s walks. Harder Walks: 6 to 11 miles ( km) using steeper and rougher paths. Up to 1,800ft (540m) of ascent in a day.

5 Day 1: Arrival day Depending on your arrival time you may have the opportunity to see a little of Costa Teguise before your evening meal. On the first evening our leaders will explain more about our walks and there will be plenty of time to meet with your fellow guests. Day 2: Teguise Our first day s walks will take us to the centre of the island where we will visit the old capital, Teguise. Easier Walk: A short journey will take us to the Ermita de las Nieves, an old chapel from where there are magnificent views all around the island. We then follow a gentle ridge to another viewpoint at Pico de Maramajo, before continuing past another Ermita, this time a ruin, to Teguise. There is time to explore the winding streets of the fascinating old capital and visiting some of the artisan workshops. 5 miles (8km) with no ascent and 1,000ft (300m) of descent. Harder Walk: From Ermita de las Nieves, we too head south to Pico de Maramajo, crossing a valley and ridge to Teguise, enjoying views around the valley. After looking around the town, we pass the Castillo Santa Barbara, high on the crater of Guanapay and finish in the old hamlet of Teseguite. 8 miles (13km) with 800ft (240m) of ascent and 1,600ft (480m) of descent. Day 3: Timanfaya National Park to Yaiza Today we ll travel to the Timanfaya National Park where we ll pay a visit to the visitor centre to discover more about this volatile volcanic landscape with a guided tour. After a spot of lunch at the scenic El Golfo, both groups travel on to Femes to continue our walks. Easier Walk: Leaving Femes, we take a good track over a col into the neighbouring valley of Yaiza to meet our transport home. 4 miles (6.5km) with 300ft (90m) of ascent and 800ft (240m) of descent. Harder Walk: Our walk will take us up and to the second highest peak of the island, Atalaya de Femes for spectacular views over the area before descending into the village of Yaiza to join the easier group and our transport home. 5 miles (8km) with 1,000ft (300m) of ascent. Day 4: The peaceful island, La Graciosa Today we travel to Orzola in the northeast of the island, where we board the ferry which will take us to Caleta del Sebo on the island of La Graciosa. Easier Walk: From the port at Caleta de Sebo we will take a path towards the western coast with spectacular views of Chinijo archipelago. Heading south we pass Montana Amarillo as we return to meet our ferry. 7 miles (11km) with 600ft (180m) of ascent. Harder Walk: The harder group will walk around the northern headland along a coastal path for views of Montana Clara and Roque del Oeste before returning to the harbour of Caleta del Sero, and its long sandy beaches. 11 miles (17.5km) with 900ft (270m) of ascent Day 5: Free day Each week there is a free day when no guided walks are offered. This is an ideal opportunity to relax around the hotel, walk independently or visit local places of interest. Some options for your free day may include: César Manrique: A tour of César Manrique s astonishing contributions to Lanzarote: the César Manrique Foundation, the Cactus Gardens and the Jameos del Agua, a restaurant built in ancient lava bubbles and tunnels. Costa Teguise: Alternatively, a short stroll along the promenade will take you into the centre of Costa Teguise or to beaches either side of the old town. If you are feeling more energetic, then bike hire is available at the hotel, and there is an 18-hole golf course nearby. Sands Beach Resort: At the Sands Beach Resort itself, you could enjoy the wide range of facilities, including the outdoor pools, the Mai Tai bar on the island in the lagoon, mini- golf, tennis and a wide range of treatments in the spa. Local information website: For information on Lanzarote please visit turismolanzarote.com Day 6: From Pico Oveja to the Coast Today we will explore the south of this beautiful island. Easier Walk: We will contour the lower slopes of Pico Oveja offering extensive views to the Atlantic before descending to Playa del Pozo. From here we follow the coast passing a number of barrancos until we reach Puerto Calero with its attractive waterfront and many cafés for refreshments. 7 miles (11km) with 600ft (180m) of ascent and 1,400ft (420m) of descent. Harder Walk: Leaving the village of Femes we ll ascend onto the ridge to the south of the Femes Valley which will take us to today s summit on the Pico Oveja. After taking time to admire this excellent viewpoint across the Atlantic and to the dramatic volcanoes of the Timanfaya National Park, we descend to the coast to follow the coastal route to Puerto Calero to join the easier group. 9 miles (14.5km) with 900ft (270m) of ascent and 2,100ft (630m) of descent. 6 Day 7: Miradors of the North Today we venture to the northwest of the island, where the landscape is surprisingly greener with more vegetation than other areas of the island explored this week. Easier Walk: Our route will take us from the outskirts of Maguez along a cliff-top route offering superb views across to La Graciosa as we make our way through miradors to La Pescosa before descending back into Maguez and on to Haria for refreshments. 7 miles (11km) with 1,000ft (300m) of ascent. Harder Walk: Our route also takes advantage of the views across to La Graciosa as we ascend Los Helechos which affords us views into its caldera. From here we begin our descent to Maguez and 6 Call or visit hfholidays.co.uk on to Haria, with its stunning cliff top mirador with views of the Riscos de Famara, joining the easier group. 9 miles (14.5km) with 1,500ft (450m) of ascent. Day 8: Departure day In the evenings In Europe, our walking holidays continue into the evening. Enjoy a glass of wine or local beer whilst listening to your leaders outlining the next day's walk. After a relaxing evening meal you can chat with your fellow guests in the hotel bar sitting by the lagoon. Walk along the nearby beach or join your group walking into Costa Teguise or see the local craft market.

7 WALKING INFORMATION Your walking leaders: HF Holidays leaders are a pivotal feature of our Guided Walking holidays. During the day they will guide you on the walks in a caring and considerate way, showing you places of interest en route. All our leaders have been selected on an intensive residential course so you can relax and enjoy your holiday knowing that you are in safe hands. Our leaders welcome your comments on the holiday survey; constructive suggestions for things that they might do differently are very helpful. We take pride in the quality of our holidays and work closely with all our providers to ensure our holidays meet your expectations. If for any reason you are not satisfied with any element of your holiday, our leaders are the best people to help. Local interest guides: In some of our resorts we may employ the services of a local interest guide who will accompany you on a walk to enrich and enhance your enjoyment of the area by giving you an insight into its history and culture. Tips for local interest guides have not been included in the price of your holiday. This is at your own discretion and we invite you to do this directly with the local guide. 8 WALKING SAFETY We are committed to running our Guided Walking holidays in a safe manner and your co-operation with this is much appreciated. No outdoor activity can be 100% risk free; however, if you take sensible precautions and adhere to your leaders instructions, your holiday will be both safe and enjoyable. On the first evening of your holiday (dependent on arrival time), the leaders will give a short talk about safety on the walks we would ask everyone to attend. Walking as a group: Our leaders always consider the safety of the group as a whole, and will show more caution over potential risks (such as bad or exceptionally hot weather) than an individual or couple might make on a private outing. Walks may be modified or cancelled following the leaders assessment of the day-to-day situation. Your leaders will refuse to accept any guest whose clothing, equipment, behaviour or walking ability is considered unsuitable, and where it could affect the safety and enjoyment of other guests on the proposed walk. It is your responsibility to follow the leader s guidelines, for the benefit and safety of the group as a whole. If you leave the group, then your leader will no longer have responsibility for you. For safety reasons, we stipulate a minimum party size of two guests in addition to the leader. First aid: In line with current practice, each leader carries a group first aid kit but is not able to supply any medication, including aspirin, paracetamol, antihistamines and antiseptic cream. Hydration: In warm weather it is very important to keep hydrated. You will need to carry a minimum of two litres of water with you on walks, more during hot weather or on more demanding walks. One good way of hydrating is to use a two litre hydration pack which allows drinking without constant stopping. This can then be filled up from additional water sources as required. Your leader will inform you of the possibilities for replenishing your water during the walks. Your health: It is essential that you describe on your guest registration form any health condition or disability you may have. The leaders will treat this confidentially and may be able to take it into account on the walks; for example, by not delaying lunch if they know they have someone with diabetes in their party. EU citizens should ensure they have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) prior to their holiday. There can be problems with medical authorities and 8 Call or visit hfholidays.co.uk insurance companies if you cannot produce this when you require treatment details are available at dh.gov. uk/travellers EHIC cards have an expiry date please check yours is valid before you travel. Insurance: Insurance is a condition of booking. Therefore if you have not already arranged insurance, it is imperative that you do so, and advise us of the insurance company and policy number. We have negotiated special holiday insurance and full details of this cover can be found in our brochure or at hfholidays.co.uk. There is no extra charge for pre-existing illnesses. If you would like to purchase insurance from us please call us on or holidayservices@hfholidays.co.uk. Even with an EHIC card, medicines and out-patient treatment normally have to be paid for at the time and the costs reclaimed afterwards details are available at dh.gov.uk/travellers. Therefore insurance is extremely important, as is access to emergency money, preferably a credit card. In Montenegro, there are reciprocal healthcare agreements with the UK that allow free emergency treatment. In non urgent cases payment (normally in cash) may be required. Further details are available at dh.gov.uk/travellers. Turkey has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with the UK, and doctors generally expect payment in cash. Find out in advance if your insurance plan will make payments directly to providers or reimburse you later for overseas health expenditures. Money: Access to emergency money, preferably via a credit card, is very important as you never know when an emergency may arise. HOLIDAY TIPS Language: Spanish Currency: Euro Changing money: There are several ATM machines in Costa Teguise where you can obtain money. Electricity: 220 Volt AC with round two pin plugs; you will need an adaptor for any appliances brought from the UK. Tap water: Is considered safe to drink, but if you prefer, bottled mineral water can be purchased from the hotel or local supermarkets. 9 WHAT TO WEAR & BRING To enjoy your walking comfortably and safely, it is essential that your footwear, clothing and equipment are suitable for the conditions likely to be encountered. Please note that some of our Atlantic island and Mediterranean destinations are also in mountainous areas and at high (up to 4,000ft) the temperatures can be as low as 0 C. You will need: comfortable outdoor clothing ankle supporting footwear with non-slip soles water bottle (at least 2 litres, more for hot climates) and a thermos flask if you wish sunhat, sun cream and sunglasses small rucksack The following are also recommended to all walkers, and are essential for mountainous and hilly areas: walking boots spare pullover or fleece hat and gloves spare high-energy food e.g. chocolate bar or Kendal mint cake torch You may also wish to consider bringing: camera personal first aid kit walking pole(s) many guests find these useful, particularly for descents FOOTWEAR We recommend wearing walking boots on all our walks, as these provide the best ankle support and grip. Modern approach shoes offer appropriate levels of grip and may be worn on some low level walks, but users should be aware that they offer less ankle support. Lightweight trainers, denim jeans and waterproof capes are not recommended for any walks. TRANSFER INFORMATION If you have booked your holiday with flight you will arrive at Lanzarote Arrecife Airport. From the UK we offer flights from several airports which may arrive at different times.. Please note that meals are not provided on most European flights, although some airlines may offer a small snack. When you arrive, look for the First Minute representative who will be holding a First Minute board. As you exit the baggage reclaim hall the representative is usually standing straight ahead of you. You will then be directed to your transport - the journey to Costa Teguise takes about 20 minutes.
