2 WELCOME TO Tegernsee Tegernsee is in the Miesbach district of Bavaria in Germany. It is located on the shores of Tegernsee Lake at an elevation of 726m (2,380ft) above sea level. The town has its origins in the abbey, founded in 746, and because of its naturally protected position, it has suffered less from war and hardship than other parts of Bavaria. The recorded history of the region and the town began with the arrival of the Bavarians in the 6th century AD. The influence of the Wittelsbach dynasty started in the 8th century and continues to the present day. The hotel is located in Bad Wiessee, one of the five townships surrounding the lake and has a wonderful vista of Tegernsee and its famous abbey from the opposite banks. Its history is much more recent and until the 20th century it was a small agricultural settlement. Some fascinating examples of the old farm buildings occupy the old quarter of the town and are visited on our walks. Bad Wiessee s fortunes changed in 1909, when a Dutchman, Adrian Stoop, who was looking for oil, hit upon a mineral spring instead! The town boasts the strongest iodine sulphur springs in Germany which have contributed to its growth as a spa area. Visitors are often surprised by the large number of medical practices, clinics and therapy centres. Today, its magical Alpine location and numerous opportunities for leisure activities make it a popular playground for visitors from nearby Munich who are very familiar with the high quality of its running trails, bike tracks, parks and sailing facilities. Located in the Pre-Alps, the walking here is more manageable than the higher Alpine areas. It offers varied walking across large Alpine meadows and high forestry tracks with spectacular views back to the lake and across to mountain peaks in Germany and Austria. 3 ACCOMMODATION HOTEL TERRASSENHOF Adrian-Stoop Str. 50 D Bad Wiessee am Tegernsee Tel: Located in a quiet position just on the edge of Bad Wiessee, this friendly 4-star hotel takes full advantage of its private lake frontage. There is a lake view terrace and gardens with a boat house and dock. The hotel is connected to a sailing centre and offers its guests access to many outdoor sports facilities. The traditional chaletstyle building sits well in its surroundings and offers delicious cuisine, including specialities from Bavaria and around the world. Bedrooms: All 72 bedrooms are en-suite with balcony or terrace, telephone, satellite TV, hairdryer, and mini-bar fridge. Tea and coffee making facilities are not available in the bedrooms; however, hot drinks can be bought from the bar. The single beds are Bavarian style with 3 sides. Facilities: There are two restaurants, a bar with lake view, an indoor heated swimming pool, and a spa which offers comprehensive treatments and beauty services. Meals: All our holidays include breakfast and evening meal. Vegetarians are well catered for. If you have special dietary requirements, we recommend that you spend a few minutes at the start of your holiday discussing your preferences with the restaurant manager. Breakfast: Buffet breakfast is served from 7.30am until 11am comprising a wide selection of hot and cold items. Evening meal: A 3-course dinner is served from 6.30pm until 8pm. The restaurant offers a variety of dishes which include some local Bavarian specialities. Lunch: You can purchase a picnic lunch from the hotel. Alternatively it is possible to buy ingredients from local shops or on some days to eat at one of the local cafés, beer halls or mountain huts; your leaders will advise you of the options. 4 Guided Walking Easier Walks: 4 to 7 miles (6.5-11km) on good paths, but with some steeper sections. Up to 1,500ft (450m) of ascent in a day Day 1: Arrival day You should arrive at the hotel with time to settle into your room and perhaps enjoy a stroll around the area. On the first evening your leaders will explain more about the walks and there will be plenty of time to meet with your fellow guests. Day 2: Bauer in der Au/Auer Alm Easier Walk: The easier walk ascends to Bauer in der Au and visits its large Alm (large area of meadow below the mountain). The descent crosses this meadowland through a pleasant forest to a lovely 4 Call or visit hfholidays.co.uk ITINERARY A unique feature of our Guided Walking holidays is the daily choice of walks. Each evening your leaders will give a short talk about the options for the next day and answer any questions that you may have. In Tegernsee you ll have a choice of two guided walks on each walking day. Harder Walks: 6 to 9 miles ( km) mainly on good paths, with some steep and rough ascent. Up to 2,100ft (630m) of ascent in a day. Please note that the itinerary outlined below is provisional and could be subject to change. For the most up to date information, please check our website. A finalised itinerary will be available at the resort and your leaders will talk every evening about the next day s walks. viewpoint where most of Tegernsee can be seen. The route we take visits the Aquadome and its aquaria and then follows the lakeside path back to the hotel. 6 miles (9.5km) with 700ft (210m) of ascent. Harder Walk: The harder walk starts and finishes at the hotel following a track along a river to a steep incline and over a ski road, and we can enjoy lunch at Auer Alm Gasthof. Later the descent follows a different route through forest via the lakeside and past some interesting old farm buildings, finally reaching the hotel. 9 miles (14.5km) with 1,900ft (570m) of ascent.

5 Day 3: Tegernsee balcony route Both groups take a boat to Rottach Egern, and then follow a riverside path. Easier Walk: The easier walk ascends to reach a balcony path offering viewpoints of the lake. Our lunch stop is at a former monastery, now a beer hall! Walking through the older part of Tegernsee, we ascend onto the same balcony path and then descend to the small township of Gmund, famous for its papermaking industries, to catch a bus back to Bad Wiessee. 7 miles (11km) with 900ft (270m) of ascent. Harder Walk: The harder route ascends through forest, glimpsing the lake before a stop for a drink at Galaun Gasthof. The ascent continues to the dramatically perched Riederstein Chapel with spectacular views of the mountain ranges and then continues to reach the pinnacle of the Baumgartenschneid. The steepdescent is through woodland, along paths and forestry tracks, making a final drink stop at the famous Bräustüberl. 7 miles (11km) with 2,100ft (630m) of ascent. Day 4: Wallberg Both groups travel to the Wallberg cable car, and ascend to the top station. Easier Walk: From the cable car station we can visit the tiny chapel or watch the paragliders. This is a good spot to photograph the views of the mountains and lake and relax in the station café. We then descend again on the cable car and begin our walk skirting the base of the Wallberg around to the small settlement of Enterrotach and a lunch stop. There follows a steady ascent, passing a waterfall to the beautiful mountain lake at Suttensee. 6 miles (9.5km) with 1,000ft (300m) of ascent. Harder Walk: Our walk climbs from the top station to the Wallberg summit. We then return, descending to Wallberg Haus and then climb Setzberg pinnacle. The views from here are along the ridge towards the impressive twin limestone towers of the Risserkogel and the Blankenstein. We continue and finish in the pleasant village of Kreuth. 6 miles (9.5km) with 1,100ft (330m) of ascent and 3,900ft (1,170m) of descent. Day 5: Free Day Each week there is a free day when no guided walks are offered. This is an ideal opportunity to relax around the hotel, walk independently or visit local places ofinterest. Some options for your free day may include: Munich This is a popular destination for an interesting day out. There are numerous museums, art galleries, buildings and exhibitions to visit, not to mention shops, markets and parks. One day is not enough to get to know this much visited city but gives an interesting taste of the centre of Bavarian culture and the economic driving force behind its wealth. A visit might include walking to the Marienplatz and the Glockenspiel, the Hofbräuhaus, the Food Market, the Royal Residence, the Opera House or Maximilian Strasse. Bike hire is readily available in Munich and would extend the range of a visit to the various parks and green spaces incorporated into the city environs. Staying in the lakeside area This offers many possibilities: cruises on the lake, sailing boat hire (subject to proof of competence), bike hire, museum visits plus numerous other activities. Alternatively you can have a relaxing day using the hotel s pool and spa facilities. Bad Tölz This can be easily reached by bus from the hotel. This is a chocolate-box pretty spa town with an old quarter, beautifully located near the River Isar and offering a quieter day out than Munich. Local information website: For information on Tegernsee visit Day 6: Spitzingsee Both groups travel to Spitzingsee, a popular lakeside village surrounded by high mountains, where we ascend by cable car to the summit of Taubenstein. Easier Walk: Our walk ascends Rotwand, our highest point of the week at 1,884m. This route has views, some of the best in the area, of Grossglockner and Zugspitze (highest mountains of Austria and Germany). We have lunch in Rotwandhaus and then take the cable car back to Spitzingsee. 4 miles (6.5km) with 1,300ft (390m) of ascent Harder Walk: The harder route climbs to the summits of both Taubenstein and Rotwand for lunch and then makes a lengthy descent over Alm through woodlands to reach a deep limestone gorge full of bubbling waterfalls. 6 miles (9.5km) with 1,100ft (330m) of ascent and 3,100ft (930m) of descen. Day 7: Kreuth/Klamm and Konigs Alm Both groups visit to the cheese dairy at Pförn. Easier Walk: We will set out from Kreuth following the river and climbing through woodland, visiting a memorial spring and passing the impressive buildings at Wildbad Kreuth, en route to Siebenhütte for a drink stop. We cross a large Alpine meadow and can stop for lunch with views to the Call or visit hfholidays.co.uk 5

6 Blue Mountains marking the Austrian border. From there we drop down to a secluded valley, the Wolf s Gorge, following its stream to a hidden waterfall. After lunch there is an easy stroll back to the bottom of the valley and transport back to the hotel. 7 miles (11km) with 800ft (240m) of ascent Harder Walk: Our walk leaves from a little further up the same valley climbing a forestry track, across a meadow and into a natural bowl hiding the charming Königs Alm. We reach a high point and follow a balcony path to the river by a trout farm. From here we pass the buildings of Wildbad Kreuth and a riverside walk back to Kreuth for the bus back to the hotel. 7 miles (11km) with 1,500ft (450m) of ascent. Day 8: Departure Day In the evenings: The friendly atmosphere of our holidays continues into the evening. We ll enjoy a leisurely meal and then you may also like to join your leader for an evening stroll, listen to local musicians, relax with a book in a quiet lounge or enjoy a drink at the bar with your fellow walkers talking about your day. TRANSFER INFORMATION If you have booked your holiday with flight you will arrive at Munich Airport. From the UK we offer flights from London Heathrow and Manchester airports which may arrive at different times. Please note that meals are not provided on most European flights, although some airlines may offer a small snack. Where possible you will be met as you enter the arrivals hall by an HF Holidays leader. Your leader may be on the same flight as you or may arrive on another flight. Occasionally we will ask our transfer coach company to meet you. The driver will be in the arrivals hall holding an HF Holidays sign. The onward journey to Tegernsee by coach takes approximately 1½ hours. If you have not already booked your transfer or taxi please call +44 (0) Please note that if you are travelling independently to the hotel, the Hotel Terrassenhof is located in the town of Bad Wiesee, on the banks of the lake named Tegernsee but confusedly, on the opposite banks from the town of Tegernsee. The closest railway station to the hotel is at Gmund am Tegernsee and a local bus connects you to the hotel and local shops. Airport parking and accommodation If you require airport parking or accommodation before your flight, we recommend our partner Holiday Extras. Tegernsee and Mayrhofen Our airport coach will call at the Hotel Terrassenhof on its way to Mayrhofen to collect you for your onward journey, which will take approximately 1½ hours. You will therefore have the morning and early afternoon as free time to finish exploring the local area or to relax in the hotel. Tegernsee and Weidach There is a direct transfer by taxi or small coach to Hotel Kristall, Weidach, which will take approximately 1½ hours. 7 WALKING INFORMATION Your walking leaders: HF Holidays leaders are a pivotal feature of our Guided Walking holidays. During the day they will guide you on the walks in a caring and considerate way, showing you places of interest en route. All our leaders have been selected on an intensive residential course so you can relax and enjoy your holiday knowing that you are in safe hands. Our leaders welcome your comments on the holiday survey; constructive suggestions for things that they might do differently are very helpful. Local interest guides: In some of our resorts we may employ the services of a local interest guides who will accompany you on a walk to enrich and enhance your enjoyment of the area by giving you an insight into its history and culture. Tips for local interest guides have not been included in the price of your holiday. This is at your own discretion and we invite you to do this directly with the local guide. Maps: Your leaders will of course carry all the maps and detailed walk instructions needed for the walks. The maps available for this area are Wander Traum hikers map of Tegernsee Schliersee which covers all walks on a 1:30,000 scale and also Kompass map 8, Tegernsee, Schliersee, Wendelstein at 1:50,000.Maps can be obtained by mail order from The Map Shop, Tel: or visit www. themapshop.co.uk Children: We welcome unaccompanied children of 14 or over on our walks on the basis that they can take full responsibility for themselves. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. WALKING SAFETY Hydration: In warm weather it is very important to keep hydrated. You will need to carry water with you on walks, more during hot weather or on more demanding walks. One good way of hydrating is to use a hydration pack which allows drinking without constant stopping. This can then be filled up from additional water sources as required. Insurance: Insurance is a condition of booking. Therefore if you have not already arranged insurance, it is imperative that you do so, and advise us of the insurance company and policy number. We have negotiated special holiday insurance and full details of this cover can be found in our brochure or at hfholidays.co.uk. There is no extra charge for pre-existing illnesses. If you would like to purchase insurance from us please call us on or holidayservices@hfholidays. co.uk. Even with an EHIC card, medicines and out-patient treatment normally have to be paid for at the time and the costs reclaimed afterwards details are available at dh.gov.uk/travellers. Therefore insurance is extremely important, as is access to emergency money, preferably a credit card. WHAT TO WEAR & BRING To enjoy your walking comfortably and safely, it is essential that your footwear, clothing and equipment are suitable for the conditions likely to be encountered. Changeable weather is possible throughout the year, so our advice is to come prepared for all eventualities: comfortable outdoor clothing waterproof jacket and overtrousers ankle supporting footwear with non-slip soles small rucksack water bottle (at least 2 litres, more for hot climates) and a thermos flask if you wish sunhat, sun cream and sunglasses In addition to the above, the following are recommended to all walkers, and are essential for mountainous and hilly areas: walking boots spare pullover or fleece hat and gloves spare high-energy food e.g. chocolate bar or Kendal mint cake torch You may also wish to consider bringing: walking pole(s) many guests find these useful, particularly for descents camera personal first aid kit Footwear: We recommend wearing walking boots Call or visit hfholidays.co.uk 7

8 on all our walks, as these provide the best ankle support and grip. Modern approach shoes offer appropriate levels of grip and may be worn on some low level walks, but users should be aware that they offer less ankle support. Lightweight trainers, denim jeans and waterproof capes are not recommended for any walks. HOLIDAY TIPS Language: German. Currency: Euro Changing money: There are several ATM machines in Bad Weissee where you can obtain money. Electricity: 220 Volt AC with round two pin plugs; you will need an adaptor for any appliances brought from the UK. Tap water: Is considered safe to drink, but if you prefer, bottled mineral water can be purchased from the hotel or local supermarkets.
