2 Welcome While many people fall in the love with the cities of Croatia, it s the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Coast that first drew me to this marvellous country. Sharing many similarities with Greece and Italy, it is the variety of what s on offer that made me fall in love with this country over 10 years ago. There are kilometres of beautiful hiking paths and cycle routes as well as great summer festivals, not to mention a host of new art galleries and exhibitions to both compliment and contrast the country's Ancient Venetian and Roman roots. While many will know of the walled city of Dubrovnik or the Roman buildings and port of, it is the beautiful and peaceful islands that are starting to draw more travellers to the country. With over a thousand islands, islets and reefs, of which 66 are inhabited, the Croatian islands offer everything from windsurfing on Brac, the organic wines of Vis and the best bungalows and villas in Hvar. There close location to each other makes it easy to sample a number of islands with a variety of cruises and island hopping passes available for travellers. Not to be forgotten is the Croatian cuisine, which is filled with culinary delights. Like many countries in the region they truly believe in is showing love through filling the stomach. With influence from the Greeks and Romans, Italians, Turks and French I have found that the food varies from region to region. A dish I would recommend you try is the Ispod peke, which actually describes the method of food preparation and involves slow cooking in a stone oven the tender flavours of the meat are amazing. Hopefully you will get a chance to sample everything that Croatia has to offer. We take great pride in handling your travel arrangements and hope to have the chance to work with you to ensure that Croatia is a country that you too will fall in love with. 3 Introduction A country with a thousand jewels to discover. Discover the coastline admired and coveted by all. Listen to the turquoise sea lapping against the rocky coves. Nowhere else will you find such varied natural environment from the islands, bays, coves, beaches, cliffs and national parks. With its unspoilt villages, beaches, Roman and Mediaeval Ruins, Croatia is a traveler s paradise with something to indulge everyone. Explore the Dalmatian Coast with its UNESCO heritage listed buildings in Dubrovnik or, unearth the capital of Zagreb, a gem in its own right or uncover the natural beauty of any of the 900 islands, bays, coves, beaches and cliffs that Croatia has to offer. Indulge in leisure, entertainment and delight, just like the Roman s did! Official Language The official language spoken is Croatian, though German and Italian are also spoken widely in different parts. English is widely spoken in Tourist areas. Currency The currency of Croatia is the Kuna (HRK), and most major credit cards are accepted. Visas Australian and New Zealand travelers can travel into Croatia without a visa for a period of up to 90 days, provided they have a passport with at least 6 months validity. Time Zone Croatia is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and also has daylight saving which is adjusted during summer, the same as the rest of Europe. During Australian summer, Croatia is 10 hours behind, and 8 hours during winter. Population Croatia s population was estimated to be 4.5 million in Climate The climate of Croatia varies depending on location. Along the Adriatic coast, there is mainly a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild rainy winters. Inland, the climate tends to lean towards a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Average Monthly Temperatures (Degrees celcius): Electricity The electrical current in Croatia is 220V and the plugs have two prongs, therefore an adapter will be essential for any electrical appliances. Food Croatian food is the result of the differing cultures which have influenced the country over the years. Therefore there is no uniformity in the type of cuisine which is available, as each region has its own specialty. Some traditional dishes which are popular include the Burek, a layered pie made with meat or cheese, Piroska, a cheese doughnut from Zagreb, Brodet, mixed fish stewed with rice from the Dalmatian region, and Manistra Od Bibica, a bean and fresh maize soup from inland regions. Getting There By Air: There are no direct flights from Australia but Croatia s main cities of Zagreb, and Dubrovnik are linked by air to almost every point in Europe. By Sea: There is some ferry s from Italy, and from Bari there is usually an overnight service during high seasons. Frequency does vary between seasons. Getting Around Getting around Croatia can be difficult. Croatia Airlines is the only airline which services domestic routes with regular flights from Zagreb to Brac, Dubrovnik, Pula, and Zadar. Travel via the train network is increasing as the infrastructure is being improved, but there are some cities which are not yet linked via train. Another form of transportation is the bus system. This is relatively easy to use and is considered quite an excellent service as the bus network is far reaching and reasonably priced. Another option is to use a hire car. Driving is on the right side of the road and most signs are printed in English so navigation should not be too difficult. Accommodation There are three main types of accommodation in Croatia, small private hotels, two-three star hotel resorts and five star luxury hotels. Croatia caters for most tastes and budgets with many hotels especially those in Dubrovnik, along the Dalmatian coast catering for every kind of traveler. Pre-booking is very highly recommended, especially during high season as most areas with reputable accommodation fill quickly. There are many types of accommodation from camping to private apartment style, or holiday homes, but these are generally more expensive than most hotels. One item which is popular among discerning shoppers is the famous Pag Island Lace hand made by the women of Pag Island. These can be purchase from some souvenir shops in Zagreb and Dubrovnik but it is highly recommended to travel to the island if you have a chance to buy it personally from the women. Other must buy handicrafts include embroidered fabrics, scented sachets of lavender or other fragrant herbs, stonework s from Brač Island including ashtrays, vases, candlesticks and other items. Most recently there has also been a boom in the jewellery market where you can find gold and silver jewellery of astounding quality. Tipping Tipping in Croatia is fast becoming more like other European countries, however in most situations, it is still not expected. In higher class restaurants and hotels, a tip of 10-15% is considered polite. For excellent service, we recommend a tip of A$10 for tour guides and $5 for bus drivers per day. Things To Do Dubrovnik: See the old town (formerly Regosa), a UNESCO World Heritage Listed area, with the surrounding ancient ramparts and fortress walls. Also visit the enticing cafes with traditional Balkan cuisine and the fabulous architecture built right up to the edge of the water. Other sites here include the Rector s Palace, the Dominican Monastery, the Franciscan Monastery, the Cathedral and Europe s third oldest pharmacy or even one of the beaches outside the fortifications of Stari Grad. Zagreb: Go to see Medvedgrad, the medieval fortress, Other sites in Zagreb include castles such as Trakoscan, Marusevac and Veliki Tabor. The Gornji Grad, St Mark s Church and the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary are also very popular sights to see whilst staying in Zagreb. : Visit Diocletian s Palace, Treasury, Peristyle, Jupiter s Temple and Cathedral and Mestrovic Gallery. Other must do sites include walking through the small picturesque streets towards the Cathedral of St Dominus, which was originally the mausoleum of Diocletian. Other magnificent locations include the beautiful waterfront with delightful cafés. Islands: Stay at some of the fabulous Croatian islands including Hvar, Korcula, Vis, Krk, Rab and Losinj. On the Island of Rab there is a stark difference in the sides of the island with one side rocky and the other a pine forest. This environment is the setting for one of the most attractive towns in the region, with the stone buildings looking as if they climb out of the cliff side. On the island of Brac is one of the only sandy beaches in Croatia, near the town of Bol, and the Island of Hvar which is renowned for its rugged coastlines, wines and lavender fields. Dive of the island of Vis into the Blue Grotto, or explore one of the many shipwrecks or follow in the footsteps of Marco Polo on the Island of Korcula. Inland Istria: Visit one of the many fascinating and ornate hilltop towns and enjoy some of the local foods and wines. Often referred to as Croatia s version of Tuscany, this area is likely to be appreciated by anyone who values good food. National Parks: Take a day trip from and visit one of the eight National Parks including the most popular being. is a UNESCO World Heritage protected park featuring 16 crystal blue lakes all connected by 92 cascading waterfalls created out of limestone and chalk deposits. The other popular National Parks include Kornati, which covers five of the archipelago s 147 islands. Velebit, including the deepest cave in the world, Luka Cave, Paklenica, combining two very impressive and formidable canyons and a number of caves and vertical rock formations, Mljet, an island south-west of Dubrovnik with deep bays, antique monuments and a 13th Century monastery. Risnjak is a smaller park with a wealth of animal life, Brijuni Islands, home to the infamous Brijuni safari park, and Krka Falls, near Simenik. These falls are commonly referred to as a must-visit to see the spectacular cascading waterfalls. 3 GREECE AND MEDITERRANEAN TRAVEL CENTRE Croatia General Information

Dear Halina and team, Thank you so much to everyone at Greece and Mediterranean Travel Centre for organising our recent holiday to Croatia and Italy. We loved island hopping through the Croatian islands, it will be a trip we always remember. Everything ran like clockwork and we loved meeting the locals and talking to them about the country. We got invited in to a number of homes and enjoyed the warmth of the people. We were so happy to then be able to easily travel to Italy and once again explore the country. Kim and Steve, Collaroy

5 Brochure As a destination specialist we try to offer as wide as possible range of product taking into account limitation of space in the brochure as we are aware that most travellers struggle when it comes to selecting products or destinations when researching their trip. This brochure has been divided into sections showing a variety of options available to both first time as well as repeat travellers to Croatia. We also cater for those who wish to start their holiday in Croatia and finish in other destinations in the Mediterranean. We have a large selection of tours with many starting in the capital Zagreb or in Dubrovnik. Visit jus the mainland of Croatia or combine it with a number of islands. For those with limited time who wish to see many islands we offer Croatian island cruises or those wanting to take it at their own pace can book an island hopping pass. We deals with a large selection of hotels, tours and cruises to suit any taste or budget, ranging from basic to luxury. Whatever your taste, we can find the right choice for you regardless if it is or not in the brochure. Best ways to see Croatia Those looking to explore the mainland of Croatia will benefit from a coach tour or by booking a self-drive package. Driving is the best method for seeing the real Croatia and will allow you to cover a vast area of the country in order to take in the diverse landscapes and contrasting regional identities. With its 1770 kilometres miles of stunning mainland coastline and over 1,200 very nearby islands, there s really no better way to experience the best of Croatia than by sea. The options for exploring this Adriatic waterfront are varied. Travellers who want to take in as much as possible can choose between a myriad of cruises, which visit just a few islands or larger packages that take in the coast and a range of islands. Those who want to travel at their own pace may choose to book an island hopping pass to add extra nights or amend hotels. Latest Specials and Prices The prices displayed in this brochure are accurate at the time of printing. We do however continue to negotiate special deals and better rates throughout the year which Croatia WITH ITALY AND MONTENEGRO EXTENSIONS Hotels Tours Programs Wellbeing Luxury SAVE $$$ we will pass on to you at the time of booking. Some hotels offer instant purchase deals that we may be able to offer although they are not printed in the brochure. If you happen to find a special deal or better price on the internet but not in our brochure, please ensure that you contact us. Look for our latest specials throughout the brochure for excellent deals and savings. You can save by prepaying your trip in advance and take advantage of our Early Bird Discounts. Duration of Stay in Croatia To appreciate the best of Croatia s land based sites a week would be ideal. With the islands there is no limit to the time that you could spend visiting Croatia s islands and the Adriatic coast, but most cruises are a week long and Yacht charter is possible to be booked from Saturday to Saturday. Recomended Hotels Due to limited brochure space on following pages we present the selection of our recommended hotels in various categories, facilities and styles. Any internet search will reveal a large number of hotels in each city. The ones that are preferred by websites are usually the ones that pay most for advertising not necessarily those that are best value for money! Professionally designed websites are not always an indication of what will be delivered. Websites or even some brochures don t always give an accurate description of the hotels, nor will they necessarily provide information regarding distances and especially service. We do not work with every hotel as we select not to. We represent hotels that provide quality accommodation and professional service at a fair price. We know which hotels are centrally located, renovated, which are suitable for party people and which are best for people looking for a traditional experience. We are a destination specialist and recommend hotels that are suitable for Australian travellers. Halina s Hints When travelling through various countries there are things that the travel books and guides don t always tell you about. There are restaurants that the locals eat at, the shops that offer more than just tourist souvenirs, as well as the hidden gems and many places that are off the beaten track. When you book with Greece and Mediterranean Travel Centre you benefit from the personal experiences and you will have the opportunity to use some of the valuable tips and knowledge which we have acquired from various trips to Croatia over many years. At the time of booking our staff can incorporate tips and suggestions to ensure a truly memorable holiday experience such as the openair cultural festivals, the best known being the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, staged from mid-july until mid-august, which attracts wellknown international performers or the five-day Motovun Film Festival in July. There are also many contemporary music festivals including the Hideout Festival (July) or alternative rock festival, Terraneo (August) that many may wish to include in their holiday. 6 6 GREECE AND MEDITERRANEAN TRAVEL CENTRE Croatia When it comes to magnificent coastlines, stunning islands and unique towns, Croatia is unsurpassed. It has some wonderful towns such as the UNESCO listed Dubrovnik as well as crystal clear waters and varied natural environment with its multitude of islands, bays, coves, beaches and cliffs. Croatia's regions offer diversity in culture, food, history, and terrain. Istria takes pride in its Italian influences, while Dalmatia's islands and coastal cities attract sun-seeking travellers from all over. Inland regions have their own traditions and heritage, too, and it's worth knowing a little about what makes each region unique. Large Selection of Programs As people travel in different times, want to visit different places or have specific time restrictions we offer a large selection of programs described as: Coach tours There is no better way to see and discover the Croatian mainland than a leisurely tour in the comfort of a modern air-conditioned coach. Accompanied by a competent and knowledgeable English speaking guide, not only will you see and learn about the country with its rich cultural background, history and traditions but you ll also have a backdrop of strikingly beautiful scenery as a backdrop. These tours (pages 9-12) feature itineraries that are carefully planned for Australian travellers, which some tours combining Bosnia and Herzegovina. We have more tours available online at Self-Drive Croatia's coastal landscape, mountains and valleys, and national parks like the National Park imbed themselves in visitors' memories. Driving through Croatia - for example, along the Adriatic Highway - provides views of towns built on slopes, bays of blue water, and craggy cliffs. Explore Croatia via car, bus, or organized tour to most easily enjoy Croatia's natural beauty. Island Hopping Island-hopping is an easy and affordable way to explore some of the 400 islands scattered along Croatia s coastline. Most of the big ports are near airports, with catamarans and car ferries running daily between most islands. The short distances between the islands make it easy to visit a number of destinations. On page 19 are sample itineraries, but you can customise your itinerary by choosing the locations and length of stay and we ll organise the hotels and ferries for you. Cruises Boarding a cruise in Croatia is not like embarking on a typical cruise, but more like joining a floating hotel. It is a great alternative to island hopping where you ll have to negotiate the fiddly ferry system, plus there is no need to carry your baggage between hotel rooms. These cruises do not sail at night and instead dock in port so that you can spend the night exploring the destination to soak up the atmosphere or sample the local cuisine. Cruises also dock in a number of secluded bays and beaches during the day to allow you to swim and enjoy the beauty of the coast. View page for itineraries. Flexible itineraries We are very good at many things but we excel at flexibility. Our itineraries have been designed to suit needs of most Australian travellers, but we encourage you to stay longer if you can. Adding an extra night or an additional island could greatly enhance your trip. If you would like a different choice of islands or if you would you like more expensive, less expensive, more central, boutique or special category hotels on either one island or all of them we will arrange it. If you would like more time or less time in certain cities and/ or islands, that is not a problem. All this can be arranged at prices that will pleasantly surprise you. Frequent Departures As timetable of ferries is not available in advance and some hotels do not always open on fix date the starting and finishing date of some programs can change. Some itineraries operating on selected days are based on coach tour or cruise component departure date. If you choose a program and it does not operate on the day of your arrival please contact us as we may be able to offer an alternative itinerary or change order. The cost of programs starting in one season and finish in another are calculated based on number of nights in each season.
