3 1892 Born on 7/19 June in Veliko Gradište as the fourth child of Milana Beljanski, née Kostić ( ) and Svetozar Beljanski ( ) Graduated on 3 June from the First Belgrade High School; enrolled in the Law School at the University of Belgrade Completed his lectures at the Law School at the University of Belgrade; on 15 July, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia; World War I begins; on 1 September he joined the Student Battalion; on 1 November, he was promoted to corporal and as early as 3 November, he was promoted to sergeant and transferred to the 1 st company of the 2 nd battalion, the 5 th infantry regiment, 2 nd brigade of the Drina division On 1 January, Pavle Beljanski was promoted to staff sergeant and then retreated with the army through Albania; on 19 August, he was pronounced unfit to serve by the High Command Medical panel in Skadar and as a non-combatant in Corfu, he was assigned to the Liaison unit of the Danube division On 16 July, by the Decree of the Minister of War, he was relieved of military duty; he resumed his law studies in Paris On 17 July, he graduated from the Sorbonne as a lawyer specializing in the diplomatic-consular field On 15 June, he received his master s degree at the Sorbonne and registered his doctoral thesis in the diplomatic-consular field His doctoral studies were interrupted due to his new position; on 3 March he began his diplomatic career as a 1 st class clerk in the Royal Embassy in Stockholm and on 1 May he was already promoted to secretary; he started taking an interest in collecting art; on 16 July, Pavle Beljanski was awarded with the Order of Isabella the Catholic of the 5 th class On 1 September, he becam secretary in the Berlin Embassy; on 14 February, he was appointed secretary, 4 th class, in the Warsaw Embassy, on 29 July he was transferred back to Berlin He received a Diploma from Pope Benedict XV On 1 February, he was relieved of duty in Berlin and assigned to the Royal Embassy in Warsaw; on 13 February, he was promoted to secretary, 2 nd class On 14 March, he was appointed secretary of the Royal Embassy in Vienna; In Vienna he met painter Marino Tartaglia and posed for the painting Young Diplomat; he

4 decided to abandon collecting paintings by old masters ( Luckily, I ceased with this futile business in 1923 and decided to dedicate myself exclusively to collecting works by artists coming from my native soil ); on 2 August, he was awarded with the Order of Polonia Restituta, 5 th class On 9 August, he was promoted to secretary in the 6 th group of the 1 st category; from 25 December, he worked in the Political Directory in Belgrade On 13 December, Pavle Beljanski received the French Order of the Legion of Honour of the 5 th class He received the Order of the White Eagle, 4 th class and the Order of Polonia Restituta, 3 rd class; on 10 April, he was promoted to 5 th group secretary, 1 st category; on 14 May he was appointed general manager of the Political Directory in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Belgrade; on 28 December, he was appointed Section-manager of the Royal delegation with the Committee of Reparations in Paris. Pavle Beljanski (Warsaw, 1923) 1929 On 8 February, he was appointed chief secretary of the Embassy in Paris; on 18 March, at an auction held in the Hôtel Druot in Paris he bought the painting La Toilette de l Odalisque by Vlaho Bukovac, better known today as La Grande Iza (1882); he received the Czech Order of the White Lion 4 th class On 12 June, he was appointed Commissioner of Goods Delivery in Paris; he stayed in Paris until the end of the year, where he met the painter Milan Konjović On 12 November, he was transferred to the Administrative Department in Belgrade; he was awarded the Belgian Order of Leopold 4 th class On 21 January, he was promoted to the rank of counsellor of the 4 th group, 2 nd class; on 17 September, he was transferred to work on special affairs in the Administrative Department; he travelled to Egypt; he was the best man at Milo Milunović s and Olga Bogdanović s wedding in Belgrade; from 3 to 17 November, M. Čelebonović, M. Konjović, M. Milunović and J. Perić participated in the Exhibition of Yugoslav Artists in Paris On 13 March, Beljanski became head of the 4 th section of the Legal Department; on 3 July, he was best man at the wedding of Petar Lubarda and Jelena Jovanović in Belgrade; at the insistence of Milan Kašanin, he donated the painting Laundress (1932) by M. Konjović, which had been dedicated to him by the painter, to the National Museum in Belgrade. Order of the Legion of Honour (1927) Wedding of Milo Milunović and Olga Bogdanović (Belgrade, Fall 1932) 1935 On 26 September, Pavle Beljanski was appointed counsellor of the Royal Embassy in Rome, on 20 October, he assumed his duties; he authorized painter Jefto Perić to choose and purchase pieces for his collection On 31 March, he was promoted to counsellor of the 4 th group, 1 st class at the Royal Embassy in Rome; he was awarded the Royal Order of Saint Sava, 3 rd class.

5 1937 From 10 to 24 June, the Exhibition of Contemporary Yugoslav Art was held in Rome, Pavle Beljanski took part in the organization (the exhibition was opened by minister Galeazzo Ciano, the foreword in the catalogue was written by Veljko Petrović); from 25 September to 11 October, Beljanski was Chargé d Affaires in the Royal Embassy in Rome; in Rome he was awarded the Order of the Saints Maurice and Lazarus, 3 rd class From 1 August to 11 September, he assumed the post of the Chargé d Affaires in Rome again On 23 October, he was awarded the Order of Saint Sava, 2 nd class; he was awarded the Order of the Crown of Italy On 8 May, Pavle Beljanski was promoted to counsellor of the 3 rd group, 2 nd class in the Royal Embassy in Rome; on 25 August, he was appointed manager of the Political Department; on 7 October, he was transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Belgrade as counsellor of the 3 group, 2 nd class; on 5 December, he was appointed assistant manager of the Legal Department On 15 November, he retired as a result of the Decision of the Council of Ministers and the representative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs On 24 September seven members of Pavle Beljanski family were killed during an air raid in Svilajnac: his brother Nikola with wife Stefánia Gorgonyi, his two sisters Ana Anka Isaković and Aleksandra Sanda Joksimović, Aleksandra s children Dragomir and Nada with Nino Ristić, Nada s husband On 1 March, he returned to diplomacy he was appointed counsellor of the 3 rd group, 2 nd class and organized the protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; his art collection was on display to the public for the first time on 27 October; the City Museum and Library in Sombor were opened with The Exhibition of 67 Works of Art From the Collection of Pavle Beljanski; the writer Veljko Petrović gave a speech at the opening; the exhibition in Sombor was on display until March Pavle Beljanski gave lectures on protocol at the Diplomatic School; September October: The National Museum in Belgrade organized an exhibition entitled Painting and Sculpture of the Peoples of Yugoslavia in the 19 th and 20 th Century, where eight pieces from Beljanski s collection by P. Lubarda, M. Konjović, M. Čelebonović, M. Milunović and S. Aralica were exhibited; from 1946 to 1948, the exhibition appeared in Zagreb, Ljubljana, Moscow, Leningrad, Prague, Warsaw, Bratislava and Budapest; he was awarded the Polish Golden Cross of Merit and the Order of the Star of Honour of Ethiopia On 31 March, he was promoted to Chief of Protocol of the 3 rd group, 1 st class in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; on 30 May, the decision was made to found the Museum of Vojvodina and the Gallery of Matica Srpska; on 15 September, he was appointed

6 deputy head of the protocol of the 3 rd group, 1 st class; on 3 November, he became a diplomatic-consular counsellor On 26 December, the Gallery of Matica Srpska was opened to the public On 14 March, Pavle Beljanski was promoted to the rank of counsellor, 1 st class of the diplomatic-consular field by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs September: a solo exhibition of works by Mića Popović at the Art Pavilion in Belgrade. Pavle Beljanski in Rome (27 March 1937) 1951 February March: nine art pieces from the Collection of Pavle Beljanski were exhibited at the exhibition entitled Seventy Paintings and Sculptures From in the ULUS Gallery; Pavle Beljanski negotiated the exhibition of the collection in Switzerland; from 18 March to 1 April: an exhibition of works by Milan Konjović entitled People, Art Pavilion, Belgrade; from 1 May to 1 June: Petar Lubarda s solo exhibition, the ULUS Gallery, Belgrade On 26 March an exhibition of 68 works of art from Beljanski s Collection was opened in the Belgrade City Museum, accompanied by a speech by Zora Simić Milovanović; due to insufficient space, only a part of the collection was exhibited, and the display was changed several times until the end of the exhibition in 1957 so that the public could see the collection as a whole; the Caryatid by Risto Stijović from Pavle Beljanski s Collection was exhibited at the 26 th Biennale in Venice From November 1953 to January 1954, artworks from Pavle Beljanski s Collection were on display at an exhibition entitled Half a Century of Yugoslav Painting at the National Museum in Belgrade. Pavle Beljanski and Predrag Isaković ( ) 1954 On 31 May, Pavle Beljanski was awarded the Order of the Yugoslav Flag, 2 nd class, by the Decree of the president of FPRY, Josip Broz Tito; he was awarded the Order of the Honour of Athens and the Order of the Phoenix; on 1 August, he was promoted to the minister plenipotentiary of the 3 rd group On 20 June, he was appointed member of the Council of the Belgrade City Museum. The welcome committee of Hla Maung (left), the first ambassador of Burma in Yugoslavia (Belgrade, 23 April 1955) 1956 The Yugoslav theater festival Sterijino pozorje was founded; the permanent display of The Gallery of Matica Srpska was opened in a building of the former Commodities Market On 16 April, Pavle Beljanski was promoted to the minister plenipotentiary of the 2 nd group; in September, La Grande Iza was exhibited at a retrospective exhibition of Vlaho Bukovac, organized by JAZU in Zagreb; on 5 September, the location for the future gallery was determined in the Cara Lazara Street, next to the newly opened Gallery of Matica Srpska; on 18 November, the Donation Contract was signed, whereby Pavle

7 Beljanski donated his collection of artworks from the first half of the 20 th century to the Serbian people, through the mediation of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina; it was signed by Geza Tikvicki on behalf of the Assembly of the APV; the artistic fund comprised 151 works of art (136 paintings and 15 sculptures); an important clause in the contract required the construction of a separate building to house and exhibit the collection; Pavle Beljanski was elected member of the Council of the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade On 6 May, the National Committee of the municipality of Novi Sad released an open competition all over Yugoslavia for the design of the building of the Memorial Collection; on 8 June, the members of the panel Pavle Beljanski, Todor Jovanović, Vojislav Midić, Oliver Minić, Aleksandar Đorđević, Milivoj Nikolajević and Sava Popović revealed that three designs had been submitted (by architects Bogdan Bogdanović, Milorad Macura and Ratomir Bogojević) and that all three have approached the problem at hand in an original and studious manner ; the design by architect Bogojević won first prize, but none of the designs were proposed for the actual realization; Ivo Kurtović s request for postponement was accepted; on 15 June, Ivo Kurtović submitted the design for the building of The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection to the panel; in August, the construction of The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection building began; on 2 September, Beljanski was appointed member of the Serbian Council of Culture committee for the purchase of artworks; on 1 November, he retired holding the rank of senior counsellor and the minister plenipotentiary July August: works by Milica Zorić and Peđa Milosavljević from Beljanski s Collection were on display at the Exhibition of Yugoslav Artists (Sculptures, Paintings, Tapestries) in the Grimaldi Museum at the Antibes, Côte d Azur; Pavle Beljanski concieved a thematic cycle for Zora Petrović related to Kosovo but the project was never completed; on 17 October, Pavle Beljanski was a member of the panel of the October Salon; on 24 October, he was appointed member of the Purchase Committee of the State Secretariat of Foreign Affairs; from December to January 1961, tapestries by Milica Zorić from Pavle Beljanski s collection were exhibited in the Paris City Museum of Modern Art On 1 August, Vera Jovanović was employed as the first curator of The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection; on 11 October, the Executive Council of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina reached a Decision on the founding of The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection as an independent institution and appointed the members of the council: the public attorney of the APV Žarko Matijašević (as president), Secretary in the Council of Culture of APV Katarina Sokolović, retired minister plenipotentiary of the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs, Pavle Beljanski, manager of the Gallery of Matica srpska, Milivoj Nikolajević, manager of the Matica Srpska Publishing Company, Sava Josić, writer Boško Petrović, painter Peđa Milosavljević; on 17/18 October, Pavle Beljanski stayed in Novi Sad to participate in the organization of the display of his art collection; on 22 October, The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection was opened to the public; guests were greeted at a gala opening in the reception hall of the Gallery of Matica Srpska by Radomir Raša Radujkov, president of the Council of Culture at the Executive Council of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina; the guests made a tour of the exhibition in the newly built building of the Memorial Collection; 600 guests were present at the opening; the first catalogue of The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection was published with a preface by Momčilo Stevanović and Pavle Beljanski; the drawing on the front page was done by Đorđe Tabaković; by 21 December, in the first three months, the exhibition was seen by 3,852 visitors, among others by Wil-

8 liam Douglas, judge of the US Supreme Court who visited The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection immediately after the opening (on 29 October); work was started on cataloguing, compiling an inventory and photographing the artworks; the paintings and the frames were restored (which marked the beginning of cooperation with the painter Rista Ćinkulov), the depot was equipped; the administration was organized; nine full-time workers were hired; the collection was made up of 173 exhibits The first inventory of exhibits was made; photos of the artworks were done by Dragoljub Kažić, as well as by Dušan Tasić, Tošo Dabac, Dušan Stanimirović, Aleksandar Aca Simić and Jugoreklam ; with the establishment of the Documentary Fund a systematic gathering of archival and documentary materials on the artists from the collection began; the second edition of the catalogue of The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection was published along with an information leaflet on the Memorial Collection with a preface by Vera Jovanović; on 8 June, the first statute was passed; paintings from the collection were exhibited at the Sava Šumanović Memorial. The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection, drawing by Đorđe Tabaković (1961) 1963 The artworks were photographed by Silvester More and Ljubiša Savić; the exhibition of the Memorial Collection was seen by 11,385 visitors; on 16 February, the French art critic and writer Jean Cassou visited the exhibition and wrote the following into the guest book: I was enchanted by this stroll through the Yugoslav art of an era, so emotional and unique in the way it is presented to us by this collection which is proof of the taste and spirit of its creator. There is a sense of spirituality; here is an entire clearly-formed world, and one of rare quality, with a refined and authentic poetry. The Swedish ambassador Sven Backlund, Swedish Minister of Culture Ragnar Edenman with his wife and the members of the French Parliament were among the visitors; on 31 March, the Memorial Collection was visited by the Mexican president Adolfo López Mateos and his wife Eva Samano de López Mateos, during an official visit to Yugoslavia, accompanied by the president of the FPRY, Josip Broz Tito, and his wife Jovanka Broz. The guests were met by Pavle Beljanski himself, as well as by the president of the National Assembly of the APV, Stevan Doronjski, with his wife, the president of the Executive Council of the APV, Đurica Jojkić and his wife, rector of the university, Laza Stojković, Mayor Tima Vrbaški and others. We must pay tribute to a man who collected and donated such beautiful paintings to his people, Josip Broz Tito wrote in the guest book on that occasion; the permanent exhibition was altered by the replacement of 20 art works; among others, works by Sreten Stojanović: A Portrait of Nataša Bošković and the relief entitled Necklace were included; on 8 August, the Memorial Collection was included in the register of institutions with independent funding, as a special type of art gallery; on 3 April, at the request of Prof. Gyetvai Károly, head of the Civil Law Department of the Faculty of Law in Novi Sad, the students were given a lecture on Pavle Beljanski s Donation Contract in which mutual obligations were exceptionally well justified; a proposal was made for the first monograph of the Memorial collection entitled Modern Serbian Art and Pavle Beljanski s Collection ; the following authors were suggested: Pavle Vasić, Momčilo Stevanović, Peđa Milosavljević, Katarina Ambrozić, Lazar Trifunović, Miodrag B. Protić, Siniša Vuković and Vera Jovanović (unpublished). The grand opening of The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection in The Gallery of Matica Srpska (22 October1961) William O. Douglas visits The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection (1961) The exhibition was seen by 14,385 visitors, among whom were the writer Archibald Cronin, US Senator William Fulbright, the manager of the Soviet press agency TASS, Dmitry Petrovich Goriunov, the CIA officer Basil Davidson, distinguished revolutionary Elisaveta Berkovich Matveyevna, participants in the Slavist conference on Vuk Karadžić, the president of the State Committee of Art And Culture of the Peoples Republic of Romania, Constąnca Crăciun, with members of her delegation, and others; the

9 number of visitors grew while important events took place in Belgrade and Novi Sad; on 12 August, Pavle Beljanski donated the painting Flowers by Zora Petrović, as well as 14 documents and original photographs to the Documentary Fund; the collection had a total of 173 works of art, of which 127 were on display and the remaining 46 were occasionally included in the display; Beljanski donated a significant number of books on art from his private library, along with the period glass bookshelf to the Department of Art History at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade; a seven-year plan of the town authorities involved the placing of information boards next to the bridge at the entrance to the town, in front of the Serbian National Theater, by the entrance to the Novi Sad Fair, on the central town square (the boards have not been put up to this day) On 24 April, bas-reliefs by Nebojša Mitrić entitled The Great Hunt and The Ancient Hunt were added to the collection of sculptures; on 27 May a Donation Contract was signed, whereby Pavle Beljanski donated the painting La Grande Iza by Vlaho Bukovac to the Memorial Collection and introduced the award for the best graduation and seminar papers by students from the Art History Department of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. Vera Jovanović signed the contract on behalf of the Memorial Collection; Pavle Beljanski was awarded the Egyptian Order of the Republic, 2 nd class; Beljanski donated the family icon The Stoning of Saint Stephen to the parish church in Gospođinci; on 14 July Pavle Beljanski died in Belgrade; friends and dignitaries bade him farewell on 15 June in a chapel at the New Cemetery in Belgrade; on the 16 July, he was buried in the family tomb in the Gospođinci parish churchyard; among those who bade Beljanski farewell were the minister plenipotentiary in the State Secretariat of Foreign Affairs, Zvonko Perišić, and member of the Executive Council of the Province Radomir Radujkov; the funeral was attended by the president of the Assembly of Vojvodina Radovan Vlajković, Assistant state secretary for Foreign Affairs Ivo Sarajčić, president of the Cultural and Educational Council of the Assembly Miladin Gvozdenov, secretary of the Novi Sad Municipality Committee of the Communist Party Dušan Alimpić, president of the Municipal Assembly Tima Vrbaški, president of the Municipal Board of the Socialist Alliance Jovan Dejanović, acting chief of protocol France Žugelj, as well as representatives of many cultural establishments from Novi Sad; moved by the funeral, Milan Konjović dedicated the painting Sun Over Bačka to the memory of his late friend and donated it to the Memorial Collection; the art fund of the Memorial Collection had a total of 185 artworks by 37 artists On 8 July, the Milan Konjović Gallery was founded, as a result of the donation by this painter; on 18 September, the Memorial Collection was opened to public for the second time (after a pause to construct an annex to the building and a ventilation system for air-conditioning); Pavle Beljanski s dedication was placed on a wall in the lobby; on 6 October, Predrag Isaković on behalf of the family and Vera Jovanović on behalf of the Memorial Collection, signed the contract which fulfilled Pavle Beljanski s wish to set aside from his legacy pieces of furniture, paintings, books and personal items as future exhibits in the Pavle Beljanski Memorial; Pavle Beljanski s legacy was transferred from Belgrade: 14 paintings, 4 sculptures, 2 tapestries, 17 pieces of period furniture, 4 objects of applied art, the painting Young Diplomat by Marino Tartaglia, a total of 43 objects, as well as 354 books on art for the future Pavle Beljanski Memorial; Tinka Pivnički photographed the art works for the purpose of documentation and reproduction On 3 March, part of the office space was temporarily given to the newly-established Gallery of Contemporary Visual Art; the Memorial Collection was visited by a group of Soviet pioneers, guests of the Jo Pajtás children s magazine, as well as by the vicechancellor of Austria and minister of industry and commerce, Fritz Bock, accompa-

10 nied by the Austrian ambassador in Belgrade, Karl Hartl with his wife and Yugoslav dignitaries; on 28 September, the first Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection Award Regulations Manual was presented; the Award was given for the best graduation paper in Yugoslav Art History; on 29 September, the first jury panel for the Award was appointed, consisting of: Žarko Matijašević (president), Momčilo Stevanović and Vera Jovanović (members) from the Memorial Collection, and Prof. Svetozar Radojčić, and Prof. Dejan Medaković, from the Department of Art History; in the academic year 1966/67 there were no defended student entries and thus the Award was not given The Memorial Collection was visited by the representatives of Romania and the SFRY: Nicolae Ceauşescu with his wife Elena, Josip Broz Tito with his wife Jovanka and the president of the Romanian government, Georgi Maurer, with his wife, and the former president of the Dominican Republic, Juan Bosch with his wife, a delegation from the twin city of Modena, the hero of the Soviet Union Marina Checheneva, the French ambassador with the embassy officials and others; the third, extended edition of the catalogue of The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection was published with texts by Momčilo Stevanović, Pavle Beljanski and Vera Jovanović; on 24 November, the Pavle Beljanski Memorial opening ceremony was held. During the ceremony, The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection Award was given for the first time to Marica Šuput from Belgrade for her paper entitled The Banjska Monastery. The Diploma was produced by the graphic artist Dušan Janković according to the design of Nebojša Mitrić. Stevan Doronjski, Pavle Beljanski, Josip Broz Tito and Adolfo López Mateos (31 March 1963) 1969 The Memorial Collection was visited by Dolores de la Mora, the manager of the Museum of Fine Arts from Mexico, the president of the Assembly of Serbia, Dragoljub Marković, the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Willy Spühler, with his wife, the deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, Gamal Mohamed Ahmet, the secretary of the Costa Rica Union, Juan Alvarez Morales, the British Minister of Foreign Affairs, Goronwy-Roberts and others; The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection Award was given to Vesna Jovanović Todorović In honour of the memory of Pavle Beljanski, painter, art historian and academician Ljubo Babić donated a portrait of Agnes Antonija Babić from his family legacy to the Memorial Collection (1825); greeting cards with 18 motifs from Pavle Beljanski s Collection from slides taken by Sekula Medenica were printed for the first time; Sava Šumanović s painting Luncheon on the Grass was restored; the Memorial Collection was visited by the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, the Cypriot minister of Foreign Affairs Spiros Cyprianu with his wife, the American ambassador William Lenhart with his wife, a Swiss parliamentary delegation headed by Georges André Chevallaz, sailors from the USSR Black Sea Fleet, the president of the Federal Executive Council Mitja Ribičič, managers of Serbian gas stations, female basketball players from the USSR, the writer Branko Ćopić, Russian and Yugoslav pioneers, professor of the Zagreb University, Antun Bauer, actors from a puppet theater in Romania, an English Aviation Marshall, Claude Lee with his wife, prime minister of Ghana Kofi Abrefa Busia with his entourage, students from Leningrad University, president of the Bavarian government Alfons Goppel, with his wife (they had sailed to Novi Sad on the ship Theodor Kärner ), elementary school students from all over the country and others; The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection Award was given to Vasilije Sujić.
