8 Narrative. Organization. SOCCOM float deployments on Japan s MR16-09 cruise on the RV Mirai, occupying GO- SHIP P17E, were organized through communication with Drs. H. Uchida and K. Katsumata. Station positions were provided by K. Katsumata to SOCCOM well prior to the cruise (Jan. 5, ), including those with carbon sampling that were ideal for SOCCOM float deployments. SOCCOM shipboard sampling includes ph, HPLC, and POC, which were in addition to the GO- SHIP sampling; K. Sasaoka worked with SOCCOM prior to the cruise with respect to the protocols for these samples, and collected the samples for SOCCOM at sea. Figure 2. RV Mirai cruise plan. Float deployment locations. 6 floats were planned for GO- SHIP P17E. 6 nominal float locations were selected prior to the cruise. In Punta Arenas prior to the cruise, the floats were tested by Greg Brusseau (U. Washington). One was determined to be faulty and was returned to U. Washington, leaving 5 floats for deployment. The track exactly repeated WHP/GO- SHIP section P17S: a meridional section along 126 W from 67 S to S. 8
9 Guidance for float deployment locations: Map with existing SOCCOM trajectories and planned deployments from other cruises in early, Orsi fronts, topography, summer and winter ice edge. WHP section P17 (Talley, 2007): potential temperature, salinity, density, oxygen, nitrate, TCO2. SOCAT surface carbon flux climatology for July and February SOSE particle trajectories using all projected P17E stations. Regimes chosen for the 5 floats 12371: Southernmost station at 67 S (Southern Zone) 12379: Southern Zone close to SACCF at 65 S 12366: Antarctic Zone at S 12386: Polar Frontal Zone at 57 S, staying south of the East Pacific Rise and 55 S (previous grounding of SOCCOM float) 12542: Northernmost station at 52 S (Subantarctic Zone). This was altered to 54 S when the last 3 stations were cancelled due to lost weather time. Pre- cruise preparations. Greg Brusseau tested and prepped the 6 SOCCOM floats in Punta Arenas before the cruise and loaded them on the ship. 1 malfunctioned and was returned to U. Washington. Floats. All floats were ice enabled. All had all SOCCOM sensors. Float deployment initial issues: All floats were deployed without incident close to the chosen locations and within the range of lats/longs that were provided. During the cruise, K. Katsumata communicated that the last 3 stations would be dropped due to lost time, and so the final float was deployed at the last actual station, which was the northernmost. This was still within the Subantarctic Zone north of the Subantarctic Front. Shipboard measurements: The cruise report for MR16-09 (, ) contains all details of the GO- SHIP shipboard sampling programs and instrumentation. Shipboard sampling at SOCCOM float stations in addition to the GO- SHIP sampling included ph/alkalinity samples (shipped to Andrew Dickson, SIO, for analysis) HPLC samples (shipped to Susan Becker, SIO, and forwarded to NASA GFSC for analysis) POC samples (shipped to Susan Becker, SIO, and forwarded to UCSB for analysis) 9
10 Sampling protocols for each of these followed the SOCCOM shipboard sampling manual (SOCCOM, ) ( References:,. MR16-09 Trans South Pacific Project, December 27, 2016 March 28,. SOCCOM,.
