2 The Story Since her launch in 1929, Haida has sailed through a succession of adventures to a position today where, after a notable refit, she is now the foremost and finest clipper-bow classic available to charter. HAIDA s early life reads like a great novel. Sailing the west coast of America from Mexico to Alaska with her first Owner, the arrival of the Second World War saw HAIDA in active service with the US Navy in the Pacific, saving many lives and protecting key installations. In the late 1940s she moved to Alexandria, Egypt before heading to the western Mediterranean, where she resides today. This fascinating history mixes with her new concourse condition to create a yacht of immeasurable allure and elegance. HAIDA is a talking point wherever she drops anchor. 7 The Yacht At 71m, Haida 1929 is not only the largest classic available to charter, but also the most spectacular. Haida s most recent refit lovingly restored her original grace and beauty, with her seven staterooms, library, salon and dining room delivering a harmonious mixture of crisp 1930s style, incredible detail and the luxury of space. From artworks to furniture, period pieces from the 20s and 30s have been sought, found and included. 27 The Crew Led by Captain Daan de Witt, Haida s crew were hand-picked to ensure guests enjoy this yacht to the uppermost, whilst also bringing specialist skills including diving, wellness, fine cuisine and watersports. Many of the crew you will meet have served on for several years and have a strong affinity with this special yacht. Captain Daan has been with HAIDA for many years and served on her sistership Talitha before. His knowledge of both these classic yachts and the best destinations to enjoy them in is unmatched. 27

28 Cuisine Chef Phil Brady has some 25 years experience, including the kitchen brigades of some of London's busiest restaurants. He enjoys creating diverse menus for guests, celebrating local as well as international cuisines. Phil will happily create special daily or weekly menus to suit your tastes or dietary requirements. 32 The History of Haida 1929 A true classic with real historic significance and soul, was designed by Cox and Stevens of New York and built by Friedrich Krupp Germaniawerft of Kiel, Germany. She is one of seven yachts designed and built by this revered team during the inter-war period. Haida 1929

33 It was 1929 when HAIDA was commissioned for Max Fleischmann who named her after an indigenous tribe in Alaska. Painted completely black, she must cut quite a dash at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club in California where she was based. In 1940 the US Navy acquired HAIDA and converted her into a patrol vessel named USS Argus (PY-14). She was used to patrol the Bay of San Francisco and part of the Californian coast. During her service she was responsible for the rescue of some 60 survivors from the Liberty ship John A, sunk by the Japanese submarine. In 1947 Fernand Adda, a banker based in Egypt bought USS Argus and put her through a refit to return her to a private yacht, renaming her SARINA. After a short spell of ownership with an American industrialist, the British Member of Parliament Loel Guinness, the son of banker Benjamin Guinness, bought SARINA in 1968 and immediately put her into refit. The story goes that he was planning to replace the engines but was so impressed with them during sea trials that he decided to keep them. Let us take this opportunity to thank Mr Guinness for his foresight. He went on to enjoy SARINA and her Krupp engines for the next 10 years, cruising the western Mediterranean. Between 1979 and 2011 SARINA s ownership changed several times, as did her name. First came ROSENKAVALIER, then HAIDA G and finally DONA AMELIA. In 2016 this venerable vessel was saved from obscurity by her current owner, investing in the restoration project that deiivered the yacht we see today, the incomparable HAIDA
